A Welcome Message

From Andrew Kane and the Thunder Bay CEDC

Welcome everyone to the Central Canada (Cen-Can) Resource Expo 2023 – and a warm welcome to the mining hub of Northwestern Ontario!

At the outset, I want to acknowledge that Thunder Bay rests on the Traditional Territory of Fort William First Nation, signatories to the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850, and we also recognize the shared lands of the Métis peoples. This out of respect and acknowledgment for the Indigenous Peoples of Canada.

We are currently witnessing a remarkable era in mining for Northwestern Ontario, as it enters its most significant boom period ever. Critical minerals, such as lithium, and future prospects like graphite, are leading the charge as Ontario moves toward establishing a complete supply chain for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and auto production. The Ring of Fire project continues to hold immense promise, and with the arrival of Ring of Fire Metals, we are now closer than ever to unlocking the potential of this vast, mineral-rich area. Furthermore, gold, platinum, and other precious metals remain essential pillars, with ongoing and new projects significantly contributing to the region’s economic growth.

Thunder Bay, being the hub of Northwestern Ontario’s mining and exploration sector, plays a pivotal role in driving these developments. As the largest Canadian port on Lake Superior, we are home to engineers, contractors, builders, suppliers, and branch offices for many of these ventures. On the horizon, we can glimpse the emergence of other mining-related industries, such as lithium refining and shipping.

The CEDC is committed to being there every step of the way, supporting local and external companies coming to Thunder Bay and the region. Our role is multifaceted, including bridging the gap between industry, business, government, and Indigenous communities, providing assistance in accessing government funding, and connecting companies with talented employees. We are genuinely excited about the opportunities that the impending mining boom will bring to Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario.

With that, let’s all join in a celebration of a fantastic Expo and seize the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with Canada’s next mining boom region. Together, we can forge a prosperous and sustainable future for our communities and industries. Thank you all for being part of this remarkable journey.
