It takes one small step to include CGS in your will, but your generosity can help our students take giant steps in the future. With your ongoing generosity, we can continue offering our unique scholarships programme to recognise, encourage and enhance the capacity of talented students to realise their educational aspirations. We can also realise our own aspirations in the years ahead to support a broader range of students in accessing the School’s extraordinary opportunities.

BECOME A MEMBER OF THE CGS EDWARDS SOCIETY The CGS Edwards Society honours the School’s first Headmaster, Dr W J Edwards, who had the faith and vision (or what his daughter Jill described as ‘bulldog tenacity of purpose’) to establish our School in the national capital. All who make a bequest to CGS become valued members of the Edwards Society, sharing with Edwards a vision for the successful future of CGS. They also take a powerful step towards ensuring that the extraordinary heritage of this School is passed intact to future generations. Canberra Grammar School would like to thank the members of the Edwards Society for their support of our students and for the impact that their generosity has on their education and the creation of our outstanding School. Two such benefactors were Old Boy, Mr Irwin Prowse and past Staff Member, Ms Ann Jory, whose stories are highlighted here.

THE ANN JORY MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

IRWIN PROWSE OBE 1914 – 2015

Ann Jory was Registrar of Canberra Grammar School 1995 – 2010 and was passionate about music and song. Ann loved Canberra Grammar School and the Ann Jory Music Scholarship is dedicated to her passion and admiration of music.

Proud Vintage Club Member (Class of 33) and member of the Edwards Society.

“If everyone sang the world would be a different place” Ann Jory 2010. A $20,000 gift to the School was made by the Jory family in memory of Ann who died on 31 August 2010. The Ann Jory Music Scholarship is provided to nurture and nourish a student’s talent in the musical tradition of worship, particularly through vocal and choral music and the organ. The Scholarship currently supports the services of Philip Swanton, Organ Teacher from the NSW Conservatorium, to provide lessons to talented recipients of the Ann Jory Music Scholarship. This gift is just one example of how a passion from a life well lived can live on through the next generation.

A foundation student at Canberra Grammar School, Irwin played a personal and vital role in the history of CGS, helping to build this place from an empty paddock into the exceptional centre of learning it has become today. He was present at the opening of Old Parliament House, played in the first game of rugby staged in Canberra, was president of the ACT Gymnastic Society and was awarded the OBE in June 1979. He also served with the armed forces during WWII. Irwin lived to 100. His recommendations for a long life: “Porridge in the morning, whisky at night and don’t overdo exercise”. Irwin became a Member of the Edwards Society when he chose to leave a bequest to the School in his will. For this, we will be eternally grateful.
