Course Fees and Fee Assistance FEES CIT is the largest provider of technical and further education (TAFE) in the ACT and charges TAFE fees. TAFE fees are complex and change often so it is important that you take a moment to familiarise yourself with the options you have in your chosen course of study. TAFE fees are complex because they include tuition fees, amenities fees and some (not all) resources and other materials. Different courses require different periods of study so tuition fees will differ by course. Some tuition fees are fully-subsidised by government, some are partially government funded, and some have no subsidy at all. To find out more about the different types of fees, visit cit.edu.au/fees.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Student fee assistance is available in a variety of formats, including: – concessions and financial assistance – scholarships – payment plans and fee payment options – VET FEE-HELP – FEE-HELP. You may also be eligible for tax deductions for course fees and associated study expenses. To find out more about financial assistance and to check your eligibility, visit cit.edu.au/fees.
GST GST of 10% applies to some fees. Examples are the CITSA Services Fee and course materials fee where the item acquired becomes your property and is useable after the course completion. Basic tuition fees are GST free.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
(An alternative to the Year 10 Certificate)
CIT English as a Second Language courses will improve your skills in speaking, listening, reading or writing English, from a beginner to advanced level. Our qualified, experienced teachers will build your confidence to use English for work, study or in the community in a friendly learning environment. Choose to study full-time or part-time, in a class based on your language level and learning needs. Programs include the Adult Migrant English Program*, the Skills for Education and Employment Program**, and English for Employment, Study and Life.
Did you leave school before completing Year 10? Do you need Year 10 subjects for employment or further study? CIT’s Access10 course is an alternative Year 10 program for both mature age and young adults. It is an accredited, flexible, self-paced program, providing a solid base in key subject areas including English, mathematics, computing, environment, life in Australia, personal development and preparing for the future. A number of elective options are also available. There are no course fees for this program, however CIT Student Association fees are applicable and there is a materials fee for each subject.
* The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is funded by the Australian Government. ** The Skills for Education and Employment Program (SEE) is funded by the Australian Government.
ACT YEAR 12 CERTIFICATE Are you one of those people who forever regrets not completing their formal schooling? Once you start your Year 12 Certificate with CIT, the sky is the limit. Move into your career of choice or continue onto further study at university or CIT. The Year 12 program is designed so you can study just the subjects you need, or complete a full ACT Year 12 Certificate. You learn in an adult environment with skilled educators and professional tradespeople, and have access to career advice, counselling and academic support. Mature students can complete an abridged Year 12 package in just one year. To study Year 12 at CIT in 2014 you will need to complete a skills evaluation and attend an enrolment session.
FOUNDATION SKILLS CIT’s Foundation Skills courses teach reading, writing and maths for work or study, computing skills, job-seeking strategies, preparation for work, communication skills, problem solving and study skills. They provide a focus on the needs of the learner in a relaxed learning environment, and can be adapted to different learning contexts.

Surveying – Spatial Information Stay ahead of the game with a qualification in surveying or spatial information. Everything happens somewhere. Spatial information and surveying is about location, and understanding, measuring and modelling. Location is fundamental to government, development, the environment and business. There are people who work every day collecting, analysing and presenting spatial information, which may be outdoors, using sophisticated instruments to find out where features are located. They call on satellite constellations and use lasers to measure location. Others use these measurements to model and map their relationship to one another, and how location may impact on people. A CIT course in spatial information or surveying will give you the skills you need to work in this dynamic industry. Work with the latest in technology including GPS, Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) equipment and specialist Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer software, and gain valuable hands-on experience with industry-based placements.

CIT COUNSELLING AND YOUTH SUPPORT
CIT MIGRANT SUPPORT
CIT students have access to a free and confidential counselling service. Our counsellors specialise in helping you enhance your study skills, reduce your exam anxiety, set goals and deal with any personal problems that may be affecting your study.
CIT provides specialist support to mainstream migrant and refugee students to design pathways into CIT courses, provide support for study and exams, deal with issues or complaints about discrimination and referrals to community services and agencies. These services are free and confidential to students studying at CIT. Phone (02) 6207 3335.
Our counsellors are either registered psychologists or social workers. Counselling sessions and client files are confidential, so no information about you, including the fact you have visited a counsellor, will be released without your permission. While our counsellors will try to assist students in distress, this is not a crisis service and counsellors are not always immediately available. Bookings are usually required (for urgent assistance phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the Mental Health ACT Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team on 1800 629 354). The CIT Student Support team includes a specialist youth advisor who provides advice, support and referrals for students under 25 years. If you are experiencing difficulties – whether they are personal or related to your studies – our youth advisor may be able to help. This service is free and confidential for students studying at CIT. Phone (02) 6207 3290.
CIT STUDENT EQUITY At CIT we believe that discrimination is not acceptable and that everyone should be treated fairly, regardless of their sexuality, age, race, religious or political beliefs, gender, marital or parental status, if they have a disability or are pregnant. The student equity officer works across CIT on issues that may arise relating to harassment, bullying, discrimination or perceived discrimination. The student equity officer can provide you with free and confidential advice, information and assistance. This service is free and confidential for students studying at CIT.
CIT CAREER ADVISORS CIT students have access to dedicated career advisors. One-on-one appointments are available for students interested in career information, study options or pathways to employment. Career advisors can provide you with information about the variety of different courses available at CIT and help you identify your best avenue of study.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SUPPORT International students have access to many of the services in student support. CIT provides additional support to international students through a manager of international pastoral care and pastoral care officers. For more information visit cit.edu.au/internationalsupport.
CIT YURAUNA CENTRE CIT Yurauna Centre is CIT’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student support centre, which provides support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at CIT. CIT COURSE GUIDE SEMESTER 1, 2014
Apprenticeships and Traineeships
33
Get straight into the workforce and gain skills on the job with an apprenticeship or traineeship. WHAT ARE AUSTRALIAN APPRENTICESHIPS? Apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid work and structured training, and allow you to learn a trade or workplace skills and receive a nationally-accredited qualification. – Apprenticeships: Usually last three or four years and cover ‘traditional’ trades such as carpentry, electrical, hairdressing and plumbing. – Traineeships: Usually last one or two years and provide training in vocational areas not usually covered by apprenticeships. Traineeships are available across a diverse range of emerging careers in most sectors of business and industry. – Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA): If you are a secondary student aged 15 years or over, a CIT ASBA means you can start an apprenticeship and get paid while you train. You then finish college with both a Year 12 Certificate and a great qualification. For information on how to get started, contact CIT or your school’s career adviser. – Pre-apprenticeship Courses: CIT offers a range of pre-apprenticeship courses in skill shortage areas such as carpentry and plumbing trades to help you fast-track your way into an apprenticeship. You’ll also finish your certificate III apprenticeship qualification in less time. Apprenticeships and traineeships can be undertaken either full-time, part-time or as an Australian School-Based Apprenticeship (ASBA). If you’re a CIT apprentice, trainee or ASBA you will receive high-quality training from teachers who have extensive industry experience. Once you have completed your apprenticeship or traineeship CIT will issue you with a nationally-recognised qualification.
WHICH AREAS DOES CIT TRAIN APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES IN? Australian Apprenticeships (this includes traineeships/ASBAs) are available in many more industries than ever before. CIT manages off-the-job training in a wide range of areas. CIT courses that are available to study as an apprenticeship, traineeship or ASBA are indicated in the tables in this course guide.
HOW MUCH WILL MY APPRENTICESHIP COST? Apprenticeships and traineeships are generally divided into stages, and each stage has different costs which reflect the more complex skills you learn as well as the equipment and materials you use. You may also be required to purchase other things such as a uniform, tools or equipment to use on the job. CIT can also give you the basic skills to get you the edge in gaining a traineeship. We offer, for example, a range of computer and business courses which give you the basic skills that employers are now looking for. Skills Recognition WHAT IS SKILLS RECOGNITION? Have your existing skills and knowledge recognised through CIT’s Skills Recognition process, making your work and life experiences count toward your qualification. Skills Recognition is an efficient way of helping you to achieve your career or study goals, as you do not have to study something you have already learnt.
RECOGNISING YOUR WORK AND LIFE EXPERIENCE As you travel through life, you gather a variety of skills and a vast amount of knowledge which can be recognised formally against a qualification. You can gather experience through: – your career or work history – hobbies – community work – volunteering – raising a family – social, recreational and educational activities.
RECOGNISING YOUR PREVIOUS FORMAL STUDY We recognise subjects or competencies you have successfully obtained through another accredited vocational educational institution.
DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR SKILLS RECOGNITION? Fees may apply. If fees are charged they are usually charged at the same rate as the subject tuition fee. For more information phone (02) 6207 3188 or email infoline@cit.edu.au.
