Welcome
Thank you On behalf of the Cancer Council NSW and POSH Committee, I wish to give a special thank you to I have 8 million good reasons to
everyone here tonight – whether
welcome you to POSH 2012 –
you are long time supporters or
and 8 million good reasons to say
“first timers” – it is all of you
“thank you” on behalf of the people
who make possible the work of the
of NSW.
Cancer Council in NSW.
T
he first POSH was held in 1999. In the years since then POSH has contributed $8 million to support the work of Cancer Council NSW – a spectacular outcome for an annual gala event. It is an outcome that reflects the ongoing commitment of the people who make POSH possible – the corporate partners, sponsors, individuals, the dedicated POSH Committee, and above all tonight, you, the guests at POSH 2012. Your generosity will help fund our work in cancer research and support services. That work, during the past year, has involved funding $15.9 million to world-leading research projects, $6.9 million to support and information and a further $4.6 million to prevention and advocacy. In that regard we are privileged to be joined tonight by Professor Murray Norris, one of the 180 independent researchers funded by Cancer Council. Professor Norris is a leading researcher who is internationally recognised for his achievements during 25 years investigating childhood cancers. Professor Norris’s work, and that of the other researchers we support, has made extraordinary progress in the fight against all cancers. Tonight your contributions will help maintain – and indeed accelerate – this progress. “Together we speak for those who are vulnerable, overlooked or who cannot speak for themselves. And together, through nights like this, we strive towards a better future, where lives will not be cut short nor diminished by cancer.”
dr andrew G penman ao Chief Executive Officer, Cancer Council NSW

A
ll of us have, in some way or other, been touched by cancer. For that reason, we can’t do other than share whole heartedly in the Cancer Council’s mission to control and defeat cancer. The continuing success of POSH shows how deeply and generously the POSH family – guests, supporters, corporate partners, sponsors, and the POSH Committee – is committed to joining the Cancer Council on its journey to those goals. The journey is highly dependent on funding of research, the provision of support services and education on prevention. Cancer Council is the biggest non government financial supporter of cancer research in NSW. Some of our researchers are here with us tonight and we are proud to support and celebrate their work. By supporting us, you are playing an active role. Our research funding relies on the generosity of you – our supporters. But it is also about much more! It’s about an excellent evening of conviviality, wonderful auction items and unique experiences all of which are 100% donated. As Chairman of the POSH Committee I speak with first hand experience of the hard work and “behind the scenes” organisation that goes into this event – and I guarantee that you will enjoy the night. “The fight against cancer can only be won by communities sharing their knowledge and supporting each other. We thank you for being here tonight and hope you thoroughly enjoy POSH 2012.”
Stephen Roberts Chairman, POSH Committee Board member of Cancer Council NSW and Cancer Council Australia

Together We Can Achieve...
Professor Murray Norris F
or the past 25 years I have worked extensively in researching genetic technologies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of children’s cancer. Great strides have been made over this time including the establishment of a multimillion-dollar drug-screening facility at our Institute, to develop new targeted therapies for childhood malignancies.
56 years, over half a century, is just a breath in the lifetime of our planet. Yet as Cancer Council NSW looks back since first being established in 1955, we can acknowledge some outstanding achievements that have contributed towards our mission to defeat cancer through engaging the community. Our ongoing achievements give us hope, spurring us towards realising our vision of cancer defeated.

As recently as the 1950s, childhood cancer was practically a death sentence. Since then, research has led to treatments to improve current childhood cancer survival rates to over 75%. Despite this success, more than 600 Australian children will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and this week alone, three will die of the disease.
Now more than 60% of cancer patients will survive more than five years after diagnosis. To a cancer patient, it means more time with their family and loved ones, more time doing the things they love and perhaps more peace of mind. It means a lot. Cancer Council’s ongoing research has contributed towards a 30% improvement in the survival of many common cancers in the past two decades. Thanks to research, we have a greater understanding of what causes cancer. Hormones, alcohol, papilloma virus, and obesity now join tobacco and asbestos as recognised causes of cancer.

This insidious disease killed both of my parents and causes immeasurable distress throughout the world. The work of Cancer Council provides hope and support to the thousands of Australians affected by cancer, and I am pleased to be able to support their research, prevention and support services. Each of us involved in POSH understand that cancer is about people, and this is why we are here, to champion the work of Cancer Council and to contribute in our own small way to beating cancer."

"I've been involved in the POSH Auction for the past thirteen years and can say without hesitation that it is the best organised event of its kind and generates some of the highest returns. Cancer is an affliction that rarely attracts the publicity commensurate with its impact on the community.
“Having been out in the sun a lot with my profession and having lost my father to melanoma, sun protection has always been on my radar. It’s essential to cover up. The statistics say it all – from 1993 - 2003 melanoma incidence among men increased by 19% and among women by 7%. Fortunately the dangers of skin cancer can be significantly reduced no matter how old you are. You can help us reach more Australians with important sunsmart messages by giving generously to POSH tonight.”
It is my pleasure to continue to be involved in the POSH Auction and wish Cancer Council every success in their fundraising and research. I hope one day to look back nostalgically on a time when there was no easy cure for cancer." These Top Dog positions had long seemed the likely destiny for Pup (his nickname), since his debut for NSW as a brilliant 18 year old. The right hand bat is the only Australian to have scored a century in both home and away debuts, and in the Second Test against India in January this year he declared Australia’s innings closed when he was unbeaten on 329, bettering the previous highest score at the SCG, set 109 years ago. Michael was Test Player of the Year in 2009 and Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2010.
“Cancer Council NSW has recognised that there is a great need to work closely with the Aboriginal community in the mission to defeat cancer through engaging the community. Aboriginal people are three times more likely to die from some types of cancer and 60% more likely to die from all cancer types combined than non-Aboriginal people. The work that Cancer Council NSW is doing to bridge gaps in support services and information across communities is groundbreaking in the mission to defeat cancer.”
john coates ac President, Australian Olympic Committee & IOC Executive Board Member “Like so many Australians I have long been impressed by the outstanding work of Cancer Council and the dedication and determination of its staff and supporters. Unfortunately, many of us have been touched by cancer by way of a family member or friend and I am therefore delighted to support the POSH Auction where monies raised are used for research and support of cancer patients and their families. 12. David Williamson Theatre Experience Join David Williamson and his wife, Kristin, at a performance of the World Premiere production of When Dad Married Fury at Sydney’s historic Ensemble Theatre. Before the performance indulge in a sumptuous three course dinner, prepared by Head Chef Dan Brukarz at Bayly’s Restaurant at the Ensemble whilst enjoying the idyllic view of Sydney Harbour and private conversation with Australia’s greatest living playwright and social commentator. Alan is rich. Very rich. How he made his money is the subject of some debate, but as the main beneficiaries of his will, Ian and Ben aren’t going to question their father’s ethics too closely. Ben’s wife Laura, however, is a lefty with scruples, so Alan’s seventy-fifth birthday celebrations were never going to be conflict free. When Alan introduces his new wife to the family, Fury proves to be a force to be reckoned with… after all she’s beautiful, American and – young… A searing black comedy from David Williamson set right on the religious and political fault lines of contemporary Australia. “David Williamson’s done it again - I don’t know how he keeps writing these plays that are so timely, so about us. If you read his plays over the last 40-odd years you would get a history of Australia right there in the most entertaining way. When Dad Married Fury is hilarious, but it’s got a lot to say as well. It’s simply David at his best.” Director Sandra Bates. David Williamson, Ensemble Theatre and Bayly’s Restaurant are proud to once again support the Cancer Council NSW’s POSH Auction. Must be taken on Saturday 9 June 2012. - This unique experience is for 8 people. - Sumptuous 3 course dinner at Bayly’s restaurant with dinner and theatre tickets for 8 and join David Williamson in the theatre.

70. ‘The Empty Box’ By Regina Noakes
71. ‘After the Bushfires’ By Peter Fennell
72. 'Lillies & Fruit' By Nada Herman
73. 'Reef Drifting' By Dallas Bromley
Regina Noakes is a full-time artist who now lives and works in Perth after studying in the USA, Singapore and Italy.
Drawing and painting have been a part of Peter Fennell’s life since childhood. His work depicts versatility - his subjects ranging from cities and beaches to the bush. Peter exhibits in galleries around Australia and is represented in many private collections in the USA, England, Germany and Saudi Arabia.
Nada Herman creates work that seems to have grown from the natural joy of creation. The artist grew up in the beach community of northern Sydney, and her body of work reflects this influence, featuring brightly coloured seaside vistas and the wonderful life that is possible in these idyllic surroundings. Her style is painterly and lush. Brushstrokes are swathes of verdant hues, rich with texture. For more information visit www.nada-art.com.au
In “Reef Drifting”, Dallas Bromley focuses on capturing the essence of immersion and the saturated hues of the underwater realm. Exploring sumptuous sapphire canyons in the reflected light from the world above, she captures the filtered light through the water and the sense of drifting weightlessly amidst the myriad colours of the rocks and reef.
She artistically explores the character and essence of particular locations or memories and then expresses them in visual language in her own inventive and very distinctive manner. The lovable figures in her paintings stare out upon the world and they seem to reach beyond the viewer into some other, much greater space. They are hypnotic and portray a sense of reverie, mystery, drama and fun. Several works are held in celebrities' private collections.

"This particular subject I have tried to capture the energy force within a still life. A humble piece of fruit or a mere flower is alive with movement and each have character of their own. The deep blue background creates a contrast to the white lilies."
Dallas has been a winner and selected finalist in several judged exhibitions, including The Sulman Prize at the AGNSW, and paintings from the Immersion Series have been exhibited around Australia and in New York, China, Fiji and Hong Kong. Visit www.dallasbromley.com for more on Dallas’ paintings and on the “Immersion” Series.
