TASK 1_ Design iterations

INDEX

TASK 1_ Design iterations “… To create a design, in an environment (where the designer operates)”

Content

TASK 2_Urban massing

The Design Cycle is often described as the reflective and repetitive structure of design processes.

TASK 3_Site analysis

The Design Cycle is understood as a circular time structure, which may start with the thinking of an idea, then expressing it by the use of visual and/or verbal means of communication (design tools), the sharing and perceiving of the expressed idea, and finally starting a new cycle with the critical rethinking of the perceived idea.

•Folding+Distortion REFLECTION

Form can form a lot of forms, many times do not need to be a white box or a plane, but the essence of form formation still depends on logic or technology, the form can be used as a whole building or a certain building Structure or component. When I did iteration, I paid too much attention to the final form of this thing. Can I use it in the design behind, and forget that the ultimate goal of this exercise is to familiarize us with these techniques and make a bigger volume for the next task2. Massing is the foundation, the correct way to do this exercise should be to focus on the technology itself, to understand the true meaning of the technology, and then consider how you want to achieve the meaning of the technology, not limited to the formation of iteration can become a building, This way the mind will be more open and can make a form more interesting than before.

TASK 3_Site analysis

REFLECTION This task from various aspects to analysis the site. • WIND & SUN & NOISE • BICYCLE & PEDESTRIANS PATHWAY

When I was doing urban massing at the beginning of the class, I made a mistake and wanted to build the massing into a final building. I just thought about what I wanted to build the gallery, not the one that tutor gave. In the next step, I found that my way of thinking was problematic, so I corrected it immediately, and the best thing about this task is that we need to find a reference or use a theory of architecture as a starting point to do mass ing, let us check Is there any logic in my own massing, and let us read a lot of architectural articles and books through this exercise, and let me understand the purpose and meaning of the previous iteration exercise when doing this exercise, familiar with the technique of form formation, slow Slow from small to large, the final step can evolve into our final gallery scheme.

REFLECTION

Site analysis can help me to further develop the urban massing of the previous task. After analyzing the streamlines of pedestrians and public transportation, the location of the gallery entrance can be clearly defined. When the location of the green space is analyzed, it can be clear how the promanade will connect the gallery and its surrounding garden. Light analysis and noise analysis allow me to identify the location of the functional partition that the gallery needs to open the window. Also identify the proper location of the interior and exterior exhibition area.

TASK 4_Design Statement People live in cities every day, and the development of the city also expresses the developing process of art from traditional to modern to the future. When we change the perspective to look at actual objects, these objects can also be considered as artworks. So, I micronize the entire city and cover this miniature city with a veil, the entire city can also be considered as a work of art. What NGV contemporary needs to carry is the development process of human culture from tradition to contemporary to the future. Applying the concept of micro cities to the entire site can also achieve the entire design as a link between public, art and the city. As a contemporary art gallery, I expect its experimental design forges a powerful link between public, art and the city. Meanwhile, Southbank presents as a cultural and arts precinct in the heart of Melbourne’s parkland and riverfront. It is important that the gallery plays to artistic and natural strengths of Southbank. I approach this gallery as an art, a sculptural object, which brings strong emotion response with the public. I would like to explore an environment which is more humanized through composing scale, materials, light and atmosphere as in a film to activate the senses and incite a poetic dimension. And providing an intersection between past, present, and future to help communities thrive. I want to open the gallery to the city through pedestrian access and focus, which will create participatory experiences for visitors to the NGV_C including the traditional gallery experience and new opportunities within the immediate urban spaces surrounding the gallery. The significance of architecture is not to be new in the natural environment, but to retreat to the back end, highlighting the beauty of the natural environment and the terrain.

Made from glass, steel, wood and concrete, the structure’s reflection of its surroundings are its strongest factor, which is a main skill of SANNA. “It is a media for a person to communicate with the city.” This is a sentence repeatedly mentioned by SANNA in the interview, and it is also the core of “SANNA’s Philosophy”. Whether it is the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa or the Lens branch of the Louvre in France, SANNA has always performed “her duty to create public event venues”. Open space and the use of a large number of transparent materials make the less barrier between people. “Either a museum or a gallery, these public places should be like a street park,” SANNA said in an interview. “These venues are not for some specific groups of people. On the contrary, they should be able to accommodate different races. Citizens of different classes let them rest and talk freely, talking directly to the city instead of facing the cold computer screen and handset. “

Main features: city block of the same volume and laneway with Melbourne characteristics.

But the open and transparent design of SANNA is not naked, but an Asian-style, subtle and ambiguous. According to her own description, her design is like a hazy translucent evening dress. The use of some translucent materials and ingenious space separation make the venue not have the danger of losing privacy and gaining the power of nature——sunlight and air.

Characteristic place in Melbourne Central Therefore, the interior atrium design of the gallery can use the spiral sense of the central tower and glass roof of the Melbourne central to realize a center, and all other functional spaces and criculation spaces are surrounding this center. 46 Journal 2020— MSD NGV_C

idea of interior need achieve: 1. architectural voids 2. physical lightness(Atrium and circulation space) 3. expansive views of the interior(But pay attention to the area) 4. The difference with sanna is that the program is a cultural center, but the gallery’s exbihition space still needs some light protection.

SANAA’s proposal, is an abstracted arrangement of white cubic volumes. the façade is not composed of strict vertical walls, but rather a draped and curved transparent mesh exterior, which expresses movement and openness from both inside and outside. programs include permanent exhibition spaces, administration offices, multimedia and internet resource center, special collections area, and several reading zones and rooftop terraces, which are linked by floating walkways. these circulation belts are defined by architectural voids, continuing this feeling of physical lightness, as well as offering expansive views of the interior.

For the gallery, we can learn from Sanna ’s circular circulation space, which is more reasonable for the exhibition route. 48 Journal 2020— MSD NGV_C

research_STRUCTURE

research_MATERIAL

Structural components such as pillars, beams, brackets, rafters, Purlin and so on are all exposed, all comply with the natural mechanics of the law, so it will appear without affectation, especially the roof of the arc. The overhangs of the eaves forms the gray space and it creates a vague zone.

Mesh Historically, chainmail mesh was used as armor, tightly wrapping curvilinear bodies. Originating in Central Asia – and migrating to East Asia via Europe - chainmail has been globally used because of its unique characteristics. It is rigid, as it is made out of metal, and it has a fabric-like flexibility, due to the way the rings interlink. These combined qualities offer the possibility to create a strong skin that can adapt itself to the contour of any individual body and shape. For Kukje we developed a strategy to transpose this material into an architectural façade system. The effect here is creating a ‘fuzzy’, approximate boundary of the building mass. The hard-edged box of the art gallery blends into the irregular shape of the site and its context. Through extensive research, conducted together with Front Inc – a façade engineering firm– we created this one-off façade. It is a seamless, custom-made tight fitting ‘dress’ consisting of 510.000 hand welded and grinded stainless steel rings. The mesh was produced with local craftsmen in Anping, China, under tight supervision and quality control by Front / Via LLC and SO – IL. The technical innovations include Front’s development of a highly flexible perimeter attachment system that allows the mesh to find form for itself and develop an equilibrated pre-stress, eliminating wrinkling and stress concentrations. Equally significant was the development of a computational process for modelling the way the mesh would drape over the building. This allowed Front to predict the number of needed rings at each location and create precise finite element engineering models. From a material and façade engineering standpoint this is a ground-breaking project which will enable an unprecedented exploration of ‘atmospheric’ surfaces.

Try to apply the logic of the city to the site, use the hoddle gird logic of CBD to generate themass, and use the surrounding roads of southbank as the control curve of the mass.

Trying to apply the height logic of the surrounding city mass to the entire mass, because the site height is controlled at 24M, according to the functional space of the museum, it is divided into 3 levels with eight meters as a level, and the height of blocks fluctuates in each level does not exceed two meters above and below.

Looking at the whole city from a different microscopic perspective, trying to use a layer of veil to cover the mass as a form of expressing contemporary art. And contact the open space of the surrounding cities, create some artistic spaces in the ground part. Fit these spaces with the mass and veil

REFLECTION warm air

sun light

cool air

The whole process of developed design is a process of checking for missing traps. Through the analysis of other famous gallery planes in the whole developed process, we analyze the shortcomings of our own planes and think about the relationship between different floors and staggered layers. Go to the 80th floor of rmit, specifically to experience the design of the stairs on the 80th floor, and then apply it to my gallery. As much as possible, the geometric elements of the external form are applied internally. It is necessary to reflect on the internal atrium. A collage of different geometric shapes is displayed on the plane, but it is not desirable to emphasize the space of the atrium with a solid wall, so the feeling of the atrium cannot be seen on the plan.

SUMMARY

Throughout the semester, I feel that I have learned a complete process of thinking about design, the development process of small to large form, the basic principle of its practicality is the 16 technologies in iteration. The development of form depends on architectural theory. Support, through research on architectural theory, I read a lot of architectural articles, accumulated a lot of theoretical knowledge. And by modifying the plane over and over again, analyzing the plan of the famous building, testing the perspective view of the foyer I learned the plane thinking logic. Tutor gives us a lot of references to improve my drawing level for the diagram.
