Pendulum History & Facts Parapsychology is a discipline that seeks to investigate the existence and causes of psychic abilities and life after death using the scientific method. Laboratory and field research is conducted in private institutions and some universities around the world. Parapsychology research has sometimes been published in general science publications; however most studies are now published in a few specialized journals. Experiments have included the use of random number generators to test for evidence of precognition and psychokinesis with both human and animal subjects. Other experiments have used sensorydeprivation and ganzfeld experiments to test for extrasensory perception. Precognition or Precog denotes a form of extrasensory perception wherein a person is said to perceive information about places or events through paranormal means before they happen. The term psychokinesis also known as telekinesis is a term coined by Henry Holt to refer to the direct influence of mind on a physical system that cannot be entirely accounted for by the mediation of any known physical energy. Examples of psychokinesis can include distorting or moving an object, or influencing the output of a random number generator. A ganzfeld experiment (from the German for “entire field”) is a technique used in the field of parapsychology to test individuals for extra-sensory perception (ESP). It uses homogeneous and ~ 1 ~

unpatterned sensory stimulation to produce an effect similar to sensory deprivation. The deprivation of patterned sensory input is said to be conducive to inwardly-generated impressions. The technique was devised by Wolfgang Metzger in the 1930s as part of his investigation into the gestalt theory.

Research trials have been conducted under contract to the United States government to investigate whether remote viewing can provide useful intelligence information. The position of many parapsychologists is that the existence of some forms of paranormal activity such as psychokinesis and ESP has good supporting evidence, but the general consensus of the scientific community is that no conclusive evidence for psychic abilities has been produced.

Radiesthesia is the paranormal or parapsychological ability to detect "radiation" within the human body. According to the theory, all human bodies give off unique or characteristic "radiations" as do all other physical bodies or objects. Such radiations are often termed an "aura". A practitioner of radiestheisa appears to detect the interplay of these radiations. Thus radiesthesia is cited as the explanation of such phenomena as dowsing by rods and pendulums in order to locate buried substances, diagnose illnesses, and the like.

The term radiesthesia first entered English in the 1930s. The English word is a compound of the prefix radi - referring to radiation and the rare term aesthesia meaning "perception by the senses", or "the capacity for feeling or sensation”.

Scientific tests by establishment figures claim to disprove the effectiveness of radiesthesia. Some science educators and scientists have called the subject pseudoscience. Some Psychologists have criticized both the methods used and the results obtained in parapsychology, stating that methodological flaws may explain any apparent experimental successes.

The pendulum has been used for hundreds of years by professionals and lay-people to find hidden treasures, diagnose disease, and locate missing persons, even gems beneath the earth. Predating the pendulum, dowsing or divining rods were employed to discover where water, oil, or minerals existed underground. The words divining or dowsing are often associated with the pendulum, even though the pendulum's range of use is far more extensive.

There is evidence that the Hebrews, Egyptians, Persians, Etruscans, Druids, Greeks, Romans, Hindus, Chinese, Peruvians, and Native Americans among other cultures used divining rods in some fashion. Divining rods were already used in Egypt thousands of years before the Hebrews fled for the Promised Land. The Bible speaks about Moses using his staff for the purpose of finding water. When the Queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem in the eight century B.C. to seek the wisdom of King Solomon, she brought with her diviners who sought water and gold along the way. Before King Solomon consorted with the exotic queen, he used a diviner to confirm his union. According to Plutarch's Life of Marcus Antonius, Queen Cleopatra, reigning in Egypt fifty years before the birth of Christ, traveled with at least two dowsers who were always in search of gold.

From China, India, and Africa come references to using rods for finding lost objects as well as subterranean treasures. Throughout Europe there is mention of the use of rods in folklore and in the writings of monks from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries. Yet during the Middle Ages through the Inquisition, there were incidents of imprisonment as the rods were considered "black ~ 6 ~

magic." In 1528 A.D., Martin Luther denounced divining as being the work of the devil; he cited dowsers for breaking the First Commandment regarding idolatry. De re metallica, a book by Georgius Agricola (1556), described and illustrated the use of divining rods in mining metallic ores. A carving on the handle of a miner's tool used in Saxony between 1664 and 1749 shows the scene of a diviner in search of ore. By the seventeenth century, divining in the mining industry was common in England as well as throughout Europe.

In the seventeenth century, Gaspar Schott, a Jesuit priest and mathematician, theorized that the movement of the divining rod was due to unconscious muscular action. In 1799, Professor Gerbo of the University of Strasbourg brought a pendulum back from India and presented it to the Academy of Sciences in Paris, after which he wrote a book about his experiments with metals.

Abbé Mermet, a French priest and pioneer in the field during the early 1900s, successfully dowsed for water and minerals in Africa by first holding a pendulum over maps at his home in a French village. After solving inquiries from around the globe, including locating missing persons and helping the Vatican solve age-old archaeological problems, Mermet was honored by the French National Society for the Encouragement of Public Welfare. Concurrently, Frenchman André Bovis, a professional food taster, used the pendulum, made of crystal with a fixed metal point at the end that hung from a string of red and violet silk. Using his pendulum, he could rate the vibratory radiations of food.

In the early part of the last century, after World War I, there was a movement towards scientific research using the pendulum in many applications, particularly in the field of medicine. Dr. Albert Abrams published a book in the 1920s about the use of the pendulum in detecting and treating disease. In his work, he discovered how the body broadcasts high-frequency radiation from cells, indicating disease or health. He even discovered how the body itself could be used as a pendulum by using one's center of gravity as the pivot point.

It has been reported that during World War II, the pendulum was used by British Intelligence to determine Hitler's next attack! During the Cold War, Verne L. Cameron, an American dowser, was able to locate the position of submarines and bases in the Pacific, and could even distinguish which were American and which were Russian. During the Vietnam War, Marines used pendulums to locate underground mines, tunnels, and booby traps.

Even corporations have used the pendulum! Contrary to those who pigeonhole the pendulum as a new age, subjective, juju device, it is ~ 9 ~

interesting to note that Bristol-Meyers, Hoffmann-LaRoche, and RCA have paid dowsers to locate resources. When it comes to science, Albert Einstein and Nobel Prize winners in Physiology and Medicine, Dr. Alexis Carrel (1912) and Charles Richet (1913), were fascinated by how and why the pendulum worked in terms of the physics of motion in relation to various forms radiating energy. Additionally, one of the first properly conducted, double-blind studies with statistically valid results of their careful research concerning magnetic fields and dowsing showed dramatic evidence affirming the power of dowsing. More scientific studies have followed yielding similar results. Nevertheless, in the end, a pendulum cannot be used without a person, and it is the unconscious part of the mind that influences the direction in which the pendulum moves.

Today, the pendulum is used by medical practitioners, including doctors, medical intuitives, chiropractors, and nutritionists for making diagnoses as well as determining treatment. Depending on the movement of the pendulum as it is held over different parts of the body, a doctor can determine the location of infections. By placing the pendulum over remedies, the ones more beneficial for the patient will stimulate the pendulum to move in that direction and away from remedies that would not by useful. Furthermore, the pendulum can be used to determine accurate medicinal dosages. Some practitioners teach their clients to use a pendulum so they can check, each day, which supplements and medications their ever-changing bodies need. Just as radios pick up information from unseen radio waves, the pendulum is a powerful antenna that receives information from the vibrations and energy waves emitted by people, places, thoughts and things. Noted physicist, Albert Einstein, was known to perform impressive feats with such dowsing tools. He believed that it had to do with electromagnetism: just as birds migrate following the earth's magnetic field, dowsers react to energies that are unseen and still not fully understood. Some people say that the pendulum creates a bridge between the logical and intuitive parts of the mind. Some say that the pendulum ~ 12 ~

connects them with a higher power and call it "divining" as the information is believed to come from a divine source. Research indicates that the pendulum responds to electromagnetic energy that radiates from everything on Earth. No one knows for sure how the pendulum works, but the important thing is that it does work! Other famous dowsing advocates in history include Leonardo da Vinci (inventor), Robert Boyle (father of modern chemistry), Charles Richet (Nobel Prize winner), and General George S. Patton (U.S. Army).

Another way of looking at it is realizing that a TV antenna can pick up invisible rays and translate them into pictures, so perhaps the inherent electrical current of the brain can also act as a receiver for which the pendulum serves as a transmitter.

But regardless, even if we do not understand how the pendulum works, just as most people don't know the inner workings of a television or telephone, we can still benefit from its use.

A pendulum is a weight suspended on a string. The weight can be made of brass, copper, glass, wood, almost anything; but the shape is best when the bottom is pointed. The string can be silk, cotton, metal, gold; any material will do. A pendulum can be bought from a store or made at home. The most inexpensive pendulum can be made for less than a penny by tying a small object such as a small nut on the end of a piece of string. In ancient Thailand, for example, pendulums were made using some sticky rice rolled into a small ball suspended from a single strand of hair. Unlike Ouija boards, that have a reputation for connecting with unsavory and sometimes evil forces, the pendulum is associated with connecting with the good and more powerful forces. Using the pendulum, we can develop skills to achieve our full potential.

What makes it work? Tiny muscles in our finger tips are connected to the motor centers of the brain and it is these motor centers that are affected by unconscious thoughts. Our unconscious thoughts cause the tiny muscles in our fingers to react and thus move the pendulum. This is called the ideomotor response. The pendulum then becomes a direct link to our unconscious. And the unconscious is where thoughts and memories are stored that our conscious is unaware of. The pendulum is a means of connecting with those hidden truths and memories. Using the pendulum this way is called pendulum dowsing--using it to find information.

Innovations - Past Lives & Mental Dowsing Edgar Cayce who utilized deep trance states akin to self-hypnosis very rarely found famous past life matches during the thousands of past life readings that he gave. Similarly people utilizing hypnosis to retrieve past life data have reported similar results. Brianstalin considered by many to be the foremost past life expert in the world points out that neither Cayce nor those under deep hypnosis really accessed past life data, but instead experienced screen memories or disinformation broadcast by Lower Astral intelligences. According to metaphysical studies and investigations many invisible realms exist and are populated with highly intelligent and negatively oriented entities that seek to keep humanity in darkness and ignorance. In fact that seems to be their main role and purpose.

Brianstalin doesn’t mind if we don’t believe or can refute his findings, he actually actively encourages this. Brianstalin just invites anyone with a keen interest and an open mind to explore higher consciousness to use his simple and direct psychic techniques and investigate what they experience. I remind you that Brianstalin has studied from various teachers around the world including the Dalai Lama. Brianstalin’s matches unlike those of people like Walter Semkiw and Kevin Ryerson have been checked and verified by people who can read the Akashic Records and who can also teach other people to do this. What reliable techniques do Ryerson and Semkiw use? Looking for parallels and facial similarities may have some slight merit, but it is really too subjective and not scientific enough to take seriously. In contrast, Brianstalin utilizes dowsing techniques that he says are more objective and can be used by anyone to check his findings. Brianstalin has pioneered mental dowsing where pendulums and rods are replaced by mental or visual sensations, which appear to be more sensitive and accurate than external hand held apparatus depending upon muscular contraction for movement.

Brianstalin points out there is absolutely no scientific proof to support the efficacy of dowsing, but points out that that might just as well highlight the inadequacies of our ability to test dowsing, rather than the inadequacy of dowsing itself. Dowsing is considered to be more objective because it involves UNCONSCIOUS muscular contraction found in normal forms of dowsing or UNCONSCIOUS mental sensation/vibrations etc. found in mental dowsing. Brianstalin points out that each of his past life comparisons may not necessarily denote an exact past life match, but provides an interesting and more objective starting point for further investigation than many other psychic and hypnotic techniques that may well not be so reliable. Brianstalin cannot prove to us that Semkiw, Ryerson, Cayce and others have got it wrong, but suggests strongly that the onus is on us to try out his techniques for ourselves before making up our minds. Brianstalin suggests that logic or common sense will not be of much use in helping to assess his findings. He suggests using dowsing or any other psychic means at our disposal.

If that fails then perhaps psychic training, meditation etc. might be considered. Should Brianstalin’s data be considered less worthy of attention than say the data from hypnosis or Semkiw’s theories?
