Guardians at Bali’s Gate Bali Immigration Keeps Tally of Foreign Nationals Refused Entry to Bali
During all of 2018, the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Bali conducted surveillance over 565 foreign nationals, intelligence operations aimed at 21 foreign nationals, and refused entry to 962 foreigners Quoted by NusaBali, the head of the Law and Human Rights Office for Bali,
Maryoto Sumadi, said on Friday, December 28, 2018, “The total number (of foreigners) equalled 1,548.” Sumadi said there were a number of reasons why foreign nationals have been refused entry to Bali. Of the 962 refused entry in 2018, many failed to hold the proper visa, their passports had expired, or their names were listed on a blacklist banning their entry into the Republic. Foreigners who arrive at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport in a clearly intoxicated state were also refused entry and sent back to their home countries. 1,118 law enforcement cases were handled by immigration in Bali in 2018. The immigration office conducted 5 investigations, 471 administrative
cases, 166 cases of immigration detention, and 467 cases of preventing Indonesian nationals on a "no-go list" from leaving the country. Meanwhile, immigration in Bali issued visitor visas to 1,161 people and visitor visa extension to 63,134 more. In all, there were a total of 85,949 visitor visas issued with most recipients coming from China, Australia, Russia, France, and Germany. Sumadi said the Immigration Department is assisted in its work by a special Foreigners Supervision Bureau (Pora) drawn from several government agencies. ((balidiscovery.com))

4 THE CANGGU WEEKLY NEW IN THE GU: KOMPACT FITNESS BALI
You are not in
Ok so you may not believe this about us, but we do actually gym. The athletic prowess levels amongst us range from #fitfam to #welikebutter (not saying who’s who...) and that’s ok - some of us have a history of competing in gymnastics, and some of us move like we’re sick sloths under water. But when we gym, we gym hard, or at least die trying! Don’t get me wrong - our lives clearly revolve around food. Our days are spent hopping from cafe to restaurant and smashed avo on toast by day to bacon and cheese burgers by night. Food is everything.

But when we aren’t eating our way through the menu at whatever new cafe we’re visiting, we gym. Gotta burn off those calories somehow, right? Whether it’s CrossFit (Lani), Boxing (Jess), Pilates (Jub) or surfing (Ayu), we’ve each got our preferences, much like we each have our favourite lunch spots. But one thing we can all agree on, is that the brand new Kompact Fitness Bali is a godsend for anyone needing a little fitness kick up the butt (count all of us in!) Located on Jl. Raya Semer, this brand new in the almost Gu fitness center isn’t as big and flashy as some of its competitors (yes we’re looking at you, Dave Driscoll) but what it lacks in muscly guys with huge instagram followings, it makes up with hardcore trainers (Yoni, you’re scary but amazing but scary) and an amazing sense of community. Kompact Fitness offers functional training group classes with an emphasis on strength and conditioning, ideal for anyone too lazy to lift weights or trudge on the treadmill on their own. With classes ranging from Kettlebell and Booty Blast to Sore Core, LesMills Body Combat and Bootcamp (lead by none other than Mr. Six Pack Dede Haris himself). The slightly painful and very sweaty cherry on top would be Yoni’s Power Up classes, which have earned her a cult-like following. Each class is different and ranges from MetCon (Metabolic Conditioning, for those of us that are fitness illiterate) to strength training. You face a “fun” class of weights, squats and lunges one day, and a million burpees the next. I’d like to say we’re exaggerating, but by burpee number 47 it feels like the pain will never end. Yoni... why do you hate us so much? No but in all seriousness, Kompact Fitness is a community that welcomes everyone, from the #fitfam crew to the #sicksloth posse, and everyone in between. Joining a new gym can sometimes feel a little daunting, but if you’re looking to mix up your fitness routine, spice up your exercise regime or simply looking to do a million burpees in amazing company... See you at Kompact!

6 THE CANGGU WEEKLY Week One: Bali residents transition to plastic-free shopping As of January 1, Denpasar city government’s ban on plastic bags in “modern” stores—namely convenience stores and supermarkets—came into full effect. The prohibition, which was announced by Mayor Rai Mantra in October last year, came just a few weeks ahead of an island-wide ban on single-use plastics like straws, styrofoam and poly bags. The latter policy was signed and agreed by Bali Governor Wayan Koster just before Christmas, and is aimed at producers, businesses and individuals in the hopes that the province’s plastic waste can be reduced by 60-70 percent, according to a report by Bali Post. But while Koster’s decree carries a six month grace period, the plastic bag ban in Denpasar is already in full swing. On Wednesday, Denpasar’s Environmental and Hygiene Agency’s (DLHK) carried out inspections to see how consumers and retailers were adapting to the initial plastic bag ban. Led by I Ketut Wisada, Head of DLHK, officers visited a number of shopping centers, supermarkets and convenience stores in the region. According to a report by Bali Post, the investigation revealed that while many retailers had switched to reusable bags or cardboard boxes, some stores were still offering plastic bags. Wisada also noted that communication on the matter could be improved. “The prohibition on using plastic bags is still unclear to some shoppers. (A notice) must be placed at the cash register so that it can be clearly read,” he said to the source. There has also been criticism of the lack of clarity as to the consequences for violating the regulation. Speaking to Tribun Bali, activist Luh De Dwi Jayanthi of non-profit organisation Plastik Detox Bali, said, “As far as we can see, it seems like the sanctions for violations of the regulation are not clear.” On the whole though, the public reaction seems to have been positive. AA Ngurah Agung Agra Putra, the operational manager of the Ayu Nadi supermarket group, expressed the need for a collaborative community effort. “We hope that people will be wiser in using plastic as well as participating in the joint effort of protecting the environment. The government, employers and communities must work together to protect the environment,” he commented to the source. Despite a few early teething problems, efforts towards a cleaner, more eco-minded Bali appear to be going well, with Denpasar’s stance on single-use plastics paving the way for Koster’s island-wide ban, which will come into full effect in June.
