Bali deputy governor criticizes Sandiaga Uno’s plan to develop halal tourism “We want Bali, and Indonesia in general, to take the potential of halal tourism which is believed to be worth more than IDR. 3,000 trillion (about US$214 billion). This is extraordinary potential for economic growth in Bali,” he said, as quoted by detiknews.

Vice-presidential candidate Sandiaga Uno has not had the easiest of runs during his recent tour of Bali. First, Tabanan village elders refused point blank to let him speak in their community on Sunday, and now Bali authorities are abruptly dismissing his vision to develop halal tourism on the island. Sandiaga, who is the running mate to presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, put forward his proposal during a speech at Hotel Alkyfa in Denpasar on Sunday, citing the potentially huge economic benefits of catering to Muslim tourists.

He expressed a hope for Indonesia to follow suit from other countries in the region already promoting Muslim-friendly tourism though halal-certified restaurants and halal hotels. Unsurprisingly, Cok Ace, the deputy Governor of Bali, publicly rejected Sandiaga’s idea. “The concept of halal tourism is not in accordance with the potential, character, and branding of Bali tourism which has been known worldwide all this time,” he said last night, as quoted by Jawa Pos. “If the concept is forced on Bali it will cause a decline in Bali tourism,’ he added.

Though he acknowledged that halal tourism worked well in destinations that have a cultural closeness with Middle Eastern culture, he reiterated that Bali is not one of those destinations. Instead, he highlighted tourism statistics from the past few years indicating that the highest volumes of tourists coming into Bali were from China, Australia, the UK, France, Japan, Korea, India, America, Germany, and the Netherlands. “This is the market potential that we must keep and develop,” he explained. He also spoke of Bali’s unique cultural character and natural attractions, a feature that Governor Wayan Koster has been pushing to promote and develop lately. “This branding could be damaged if we develop a tourism concept that does not match the uniqueness of Balinese culture, for example, halal tourism,” he concluded. Ok fam - having lived in Bali for years, we’ve had our fair share of nasi, to the point where it sometimes feels like we have it coming out of our ears (#nasiislife!!). Whether it’s the quick post-surf warung stop to top up on the carbs or if it’s a late night police station snack (if you haven’t been to the warung opposite the po-po, have you even been to Canggu?), rice is as much a part of our lives as smoothie bowls and almond milk cappuccinos. While we love Indo food to varying degrees (Ayu to the point of addiction and Justine as long as there’s no chilli), we’ve recently been introduced to SVA Indonesian Tapas & Bar in Berawa, and we are all collectively obsessed. SVA has everything you could ask for of an Indonesian restaurant, and then some! Let’s talk concept - while we’re no strangers to dingy streetside stalls, there’s a time and a place for everything. SVA is a place for traditional Indonesian flavours, the way Ibu down the road (or in the village) makes it, for those times you're feeling a little boujee, like you might want to wear your heels to dinner.. you feel me? Authentic Indo tapas dished up in a fine dining setting, with epic cocktails and a rooftop nightclub to boot? I mean, where has SVA been all our Canggu lives!?! If you’ve spent any time trawling street food stalls in Indonesia, you’ll immediately recognise several of the SVA dishes: the Karedok served with peanut sauce is a similar dish to the better-known gado-gado, and the Jamur Rica-Rica (deep friend mushrooms with rica-rica sauce) threw us straight back to our many spicy kampung adventures. The meat dishes were equally amazing; the Dendeng Balado is now officially the only way we’re eating tenderloin, and the Tongseng Kambing is genuinely the most tender lamb we’ve ever had, ever! Enak! The mango blossom honey marinated grilled prawns were everything a Gu Girl could ask for of a grilled seafood dish, and the selection of satays that kept coming in on smoking hot charcoal had our mouths watering. And as if all that wasn’t enough to get you down to Berawa Beach (down the gang opposite Finns, SVA is just behind Morabito Art Villa!), may we introduce you to the best selection of sambals on the island. And we (ok, Ayu) don’t say this lightly: the selection ranges from the mild sambal matah to the hot and fiery sambal ganja-belimbing. Mouth-wateringly spicy, and if that’s our chilli-crazy Ayu’s verdict, that’s saying something! The SVA complex encompasses the Balinese notion of balance in all aspects of life; while the downstairs cafe Kolektiv (more on that coming soon, stay tuned Gu crew) is a light and breezy breakfast and lunch spot, the top floor of the restaurant with views over Berawa is your go-to for lunch-time SVA specials and a soon-to-be sleek nightspot, while the middle level, with its plush interiors and cushy booth seating serves as an intimate dining venue for those dinner dates with your new sayang. Its hot like a Canggu sunrise. One of the reasons we love Canggu so much is (obviously) the amazing smorgasbord of food that our little home town has to offer. It feels like we’ve been blessed with cuisines and fusions from all over the globe, so it’s almost ironic that we’ve been missing a fancy-but-casual-butfancy Indonesian tapas bar. Thanks SVA for filling this gaping hole in our lives, and can we book a table for four ASAP? We’re defs coming back !
