Turkish hiker aborts Mount Agung climb for fear of eruption, crashes motorbike on way home intention of scaling Bali’s highest peak. According to the news outlet, he climbed via the Pasar Agung Temple in Sebudi and hiked until he was around a kilometer adrift from the top of the volcano when a sudden gust from the crater startled him enough to make him turn back. A Turkish tourist who attempted to climb Mount Agung but turned back afraid that the volcano was about to erupt proceeded to crash his motorbike on his way home. Luckily, local residents of Selat, a village not far south of the mountain, were on hand to help, according to a report by Nusa Bali. Thirty-five-year-old Ramil Shchebardrel admitted that he had set off alone at around 6pm on Sunday with the

He made it safely back to the parking lot at Pura Pasar Agung and continued his journey southwards on his motorbike. But when he passed a temple procession at Pura Puseh in Selat, his legs gave way and he fell off his bike. Villagers involved in the procession helped him to the nearby Selat police station and he was quickly referred to the Straits Health Center. Medics confirmed he had lost control of his bike

due to cramps in his leg, most likely caused by the cold temperatures on the mountain. Despite authorities’ warnings against doing so, it seems that tourists are determined to try and climb Bali’s most active volcano of late. Just last month, three Russian tourists became local celebrities after footage of them fleeing an erupting Agung went viral on social media. Agung’s alert status remains at Level III, or “standby” status. As such hiking, climbing and entering the hazard zone, which stretches 4 kilometers around the peak’s crater, are prohibited, though it’s unclear just how strictly authorities are managing to enforce it. NEW IN THE GU: CACTUS BALI

You are not in

if you are not in the

Recently I found myself having one of those chicken or the egg moments when pondering the state of the exploding Canggu café scene. What came first? Instagram? Or Canggu cafes? And could one exist without the other? You might think I’m being a little facetious, but this is actually a thing. We have seen underachieving cafes closed down, repainted all the colours of the pastel unicorn rainbow, illuminated with a neon sign spelling out some cute insta quote, and BANG! It’s drowning in influencers. Yet another same-same café concept hatched out of our need to Instagram our food. One Canggu OG who’s been around since the beginning of time and could settle this paradox for us once and for all? Our mate Dave. Trendspotting since before trending was trendy and hipster was hip, he and his wife Made are two-quarters of Canteen; Canggu’s most iconic and prevailing café. They’ve been brewing beans & slinging breakfast burgers since before Instagram was really even a thing, and the Gu was literally just a wave and a rice field. Forecasting Pererenan as the next posi to take off, they’ve just opened the new Cactus Cafe Bali along Jl Pantai Pererenan. And if their first venture is anything to go off, then we take this as official word that the once sleepy strip of rukos pathing the way to Pererenan beach is about to be the Gu’s next hotspot. Cactus isn’t a café built around an Instagram moment, but rather a concept taking us back to what cafes should really be all about – and that’s f**king good coffee, and damn good food.. #nofilter. Now, don’t freak out. The insta-obsessed among us will still get our kicks out of boomeranging a cactus shaped cookie into our cappuccino, but don’t be fooled. That’s just good branding, while the true backbone of this joint is printed on the menu. Think hearty sausage & egg surfer sandwiches, healthy sprouted quinoa & avo on toast, perfectly poached eggs served big brekkie-style with a crunchy hash brown, icy smoothie bowls and the best damn fruit salad we’ve tasted in a long while. It’s what you’d expect of this pioneering pair, sprinkled with a fresh new flayva that they can credit to their new biz partner and his creative foodie flair.

Man in Yogyakarta challenges village regulation prohibiting him from staying because he’s not Muslim, wins “What’s important to me is that the regulation has been revoked. Don’t let there be other victims,” Slamet said. Karet officials say that they will now allow Slamet to live in the hamlet, though Slamet himself has indicated that he may move out after being made uncomfortable by the whole ordeal.

A discriminatory regulation in a village in Yogyakarta has been removed thanks to the efforts of a newcomer to the community in a case that has both raised alarms about eroding religious tolerance and given hope to those who seek to challenge that intolerance. As reported by Tribun, a 42-year-old man named Slamet Jumiarto moved into a rented house his wife and two children in the hamlet of Karet, which is located in the Bantul regency of Yogyakarta, last Friday. A couple of days later, Slamet went to register himself with the neighborhood chief, but found his residency opposed by residents of the hamlet on the grounds that he’s not a Muslim. When Slamet, who is Catholic, went to complain to the village chief, he learned that the hamlet had a regulation in place prohibiting nonMuslims from residing in the community, which was passed in 2015.

“From today onwards, the regulation has been revoked because it went against laws and regulations. We have agreed to revoke the regulation and there are no problems with Slamet,” Karet Chief Iswanto said Monday. Iswanto explained that the regulation was passed to prevent non-Muslims from being buried alongside Muslims in the hamlet’s public cemetery. Yogyakarta is no stranger to religious discrimination regarding burials. In

Slamet took his case to officials in Yogyakarta, who held a mediation session between him and hamlet officials. The latter initially agreed to let Slamet stay, but only for six months. “If only six months, then what for? That’s like a subtle rejection for me. If I’m allowed to stay, then I’m allowed, if not, then I’m not — it should be that simple,” Slamet said. Slamet told hamlet officials that he would be willing to relocate if they would compensate him for all of the money he had put down for the lease and renovations of the house. He also demanded that the discriminatory regulation — which is unconstitutional in Indonesia — be erased. After Yogyakarta officials became involved in the dispute, the hamlet’s officials rescinded the regulation on Monday. THE CANGGU WEEKLY, 05 Apr - 12 Apr 2019

December 2018, Muslim residents in the city forced a family to saw off a wooden cross-shaped grave marker belonging to their recently deceased loved one, on the grounds that they had plans to turn the cemetery into a Muslim-exclusive burial area. Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim expressed his concerns about Slamet’s case and the existence of such discriminatory regulations in Indonesia. The minister stressed that the matter has been resolved and that the hamlet’s regulation was a product of their “misunderstanding” of the law and that there was no malicious intent behind its passing, since the regulation was revoked as soon as somebody pointed out that it was wrong.
