Reckless foreigners rebuked for hanging out on edge of Bali’s Agung crater Twitter on Monday share a video to rebuke “dangerous” behavior of the two foreigners who can be seen sitting at the very edge of a volcano crater, referred to as Mount Agung in the footage.
Indonesia’s disaster agency spokesman is calling out a pair of foreigners for disregarding the exclusion zone at Bali’s Mount Agung, which just last erupted on Sunday. National Disaster Mitigation Agency BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho took to
“Even though any activities are already forbidden in a radius of four kilometers from the crater, there are still tourists and tour guides that are reckless and are going to the crater. It’s extremely dangerous because Mount Agung could erupt at any time,” Nugroho tweeted. “This video from 18/4/2019 is spreading on social media. Do not copy this! It’s dangerous!” he added Mount Agung is at a level three alert level, or
“standby” status, as set by Indonesia’s volcanology center. There were thankfully no reports of casualties from Sunday’s eruptions, but the activity caused a drizzle of volcanic ash in several sub-districts in Karangasem. Following the eruptions, Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) urged residents in Karangasem to wear face masks whenever they’re outdoors. (coconuts.co)

NEW IN THE GU: OTTO CANGGU RESTO & COCKTAILS
You are not in
Just when you thought that Canggu couldn’t possibly fit any more cute little road-side cafes.. BAM! Otto Canggu makes an entrance on the bustling Berawa food scene, and we are officially ok with it. I mean, any place with Resto & Cocktails in its name has our attention, and so off we scooted on to Jl. pantai Berawa to get our Otto on. Located next to Piring Daun, you can’t miss the alang-alang roof shading the tropical interiors - with rattan chairs, ontrend white tiles, wicker lanterns and tropical AF decor.. the #balivibes are strong. Don’t discount this as just another tropical smoothie bowl shack, as there’s far more depth to Otto than first meets the eye. Did we say depth? We meant Turkey. Really though. The Turkish owners with their chef & DJ hospitality background, have mixed a healthy dose of Turkey flayva into the International menu and chill hangout vibes. A sprinkling of sesame seeds here, a lashing of hummus there, and you’ve officially got one very satisfied bunch of GU girls.

A few of the dishes on the Otto menu are typically Turkish - the Kumpir baked potatoes, the Menemen egg dish and the pumpkinco, a sweet potato desert drizzled over with extra tahini and crushed nuts (ACTUALLY healthy and oh so yum!). But in the name of fairness (and our insatiable hunger), we decided to sample a little bit of everything. The Chicky bowl is almost too grammable for real life: sesame crusted avo, perfectly boiled eggs, veggies and chicken breast all scream #fitchicks and if you’ve been following our Insta stories lately, you’ll know we’ve been killing it at Odyssey lately. However, with gains come cheat days, and we’d cheat on our boxing trainers with the Otto Classic beef burger any day. Or maybe the Mediterranean pasta? No? Not feeling the carbs? Then you should probably go for the Pro or Fit bowls from the mains menu - healthy, balanced, colourful and nutritious meals for the #fitfam. Whether it’s an on or an off day, Otto have got you crew. Now, life is all about balance we say; on one hand you’ll be counting macros, while the other hand sips a White Dragon - or any of the other cocktails off the extensive Otto drinks list. And when we say extensive, we really mean it.. with everything from your basic Binnies to ten different kinds of mojito, eleven margarita flavours and page after page of thirst inspiring concoctions. Classic cocktails to BJ shooters - it would be a little too easy to let the balance get a little out of hand here! With DJ-curated tunes in the background, why not go for something a little naughty, and nice at the same time? And if things do get a little out of hand - blame Otto. You can’t have a cocktail menu like that and not expect us to see how far we can get through it before we GOJEK home, right?! GG xx

Viral: Bali supermarket switches from plastic to eco-friendly banana leaves to wrap fresh produce Bali’s got major environmental issues, especially in regards to plastic waste. But a supermarket chain on the island recently became the talk of social media for their new green approach to packaging that will hopefully serve as an inspiration to others. Bintang Supermarket, which has locations in Ubud and Seminyak, recently switched from using plastic bags to banana leaves to wrap their vegetables, such as eggplants, red chilli, and leeks. Based on this viral post from their Facebook page, the supermarket plans to gradually reduce plastic packaging for all of their fresh produce. “We have stopped using plastic bags for our customers and we don’t sell straws, styrofoam (packaging) or plastic bags anymore. Aside from that, we also use bamboo rope as the strap [used to tie the banana leaves around the produce], because they’re generally available at markets, especially in Bali,” Bintang Supermarket operational manager Agus Sanjaya told Kompas yesterday. Agus said that banana leaves were a natural alternative to plastic bags due to their low price, environmentallyfriendly features and the fact that they have historically been used to wrap food in many Southeast Asian countries. The banana leaf packaging will probably remind some people of Rimping supermarket in Chiangmai, Thailand, which went viral recently for similarly utilizing banana leaves as food packaging. The supermarket introduced the banana leaf packaging program in response to Bali’s well-documented plastic waste problems. The islandprovince’s governor, Wayan Koster, passed an island-wide ban on singleuse plastics like straws, styrofoam and poly bags to curb their use in December last year.
vlogger partner posted it to his Instagram account. Wildlife and the environment stand to suffer the most from the country’s obsession with plastic use. Last year, a dead sperm whale washed up on the shores of Wakatobi with 5.9 kilograms of plastic waste in its stomach, including plastic bags, bottles, and even flip-flops.
A great deal of that waste comes from the 9.8 billion (!) plastic bags the country is estimated to use each year. The Indonesian government aims to reduce plastic waste by 70% by 2025.
Recently, a photo of an Indomie instant noodle wrapper found in a pile of garbage on a beach in Malang Regency, East Java went viral because the packaging indicated a special oneoff product to celebrate Indonesia’s 55th independence day — which was 19 years ago. (coconuts.co)

The plastic waste problem in Bali was perhaps never more apparent than in late 2017 when officials declared the island was in a state of “garbage emergency” due to after stretches of its popular tourist beaches were swamped with plastic waste.
In general, Indonesia holds the unfortunate distinction of being the world’s second largest producer of plastic marine waste, behind only China, with a total of 64 million tons of plastic waste per year coming out of the country, according to data from the Indonesian Plastic Industry Association (INAPLAS) and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
