Last ditch effort: Russian drug suspect that escaped Bali prison through restroom recaptured a ditch in an East Denpasar village as his temporary hiding place, using leaves to cover himself up in an attempt to avoid detection. However, his efforts weren’t enough to prevent residents from noticing him.
A Russian drug suspect who escaped from the Bali Police on Saturday, the 35-year-old Andrey Spiridonov, was reapprehended yesterday, reportedly while he was hiding in a ditch. According to police Spiridonov initially didn’t have any idea where to go after he escaped the jail but eventually chose
“After about 45 hours, on Sunday night, two Bali Police’ Drug Unit officers received information from residents that the foreigner in question was hiding in a ditch on Tunjung Sari Alley, Tohpati Village, East Denpasar,” Bali Police’s Public Relations Unit Chief, Grand Commissioner Hengky Widjaja told reporters on Monday, as quoted by Detik. Spiridonov, who reportedly works as a psychologist, has been brought to the headquarters of Bali Police Drug Unit for further investigation after undergoing a medical check-up at a local hospital.
Spiridonov was arrested on Tuesday morning of last week in a parking lot in Bali’s capital of Denpasar. According to police, Spiridonov managed to escape on Saturday after asking to be brought to an upstairs restroom. He was escorted by an officer while his arms and legs were still handcuffed. The officer who waited outside the restroom later found out that the suspect had jumped out through the restroom’s ventilation, with his handcuffs left behind. Spiridonov was arrested for allegedly importing N-Dimethyltrytamine (DMT), an illegal hallucinogenic narcotic which he said he ordered online and had delivered from the Netherlands (coconuts.co)

We can’t help but feel just a little OTT ordering pancake stacks after our morning sweat sesh on the gloves at Odyssey during the week. There’s no denying our extreme love for our delicious syrup drenched friends.. But how does the saying go? A moment on the lips, forever on the hips? If only it weren’t so.. Enter Funky Pancakes Bali – Canggu’s very first plant-based pancake café in town. There’s funk, there’s soul, there’s epic pancakes and they’re available alllll day long! Soak in the good vibes as the most funkadelic of tunes ooze through Marshall speakers in this bright, industrial hip new hangout on Jl. Pandang Linjong . Think vintage vinyl adorned walls, industrial lighting and an abstract neon on the ceiling that kept us all guessing (taking votes for an avocado, a pancake stack, an egg?). Ask someone to frisbee over a menu – they’re actual records! We dig it. It’s impossible not to bop away to James Brown’s ‘I feel good…!’ when your biggest dilemma is deciding which pancakes to order. Now, aside from wearing wooden shoes and cycling everywhere, the Dutch also happen to be renowned for their love of pancakes – eating them for breakfast, lunch and dinner rather than as an indulgent treat. Taking away the pancake stigma and making them a healthy meal choice is the ethos at Funky Pancakes. Eating pancakes around the clock without judgement? Sounds like a flippin’ good deal to us! You’ll find a pancake for every personality on the menu here - with sweet, savoury, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options to keep everyone in high spirits. Without an egg or stick of butter in sight, your pancake bases are whipped, flipped and cooked to fluffy perfection using locally sourced virgin coconut oil. After a gram-worthy feed that tastes as good as it looks? May we recommend The Funky Pancake stack. A masterpiece in its own right – this beauty boasts a generous helping of house-made PB, choc chips and guava sauce on actual RAINBOW pancakes. Pair with a cappuccino and you’ve got yourself a fairytale kinda brekkie. Tired of the old sourdough toast selection? Try something new and give the Pink Mermaid a whirl. Charcoal pancakes stacked with smoked salmon & cashew sour cream, radish pickles & watercress. A fresh take on a traditional brekkie dish.. colour us impressed! There are a reason classics exist. They just work, okay?! The Classic American is no exception.. Think whole wheat flour pancakes with bacon, banana, blueberries & maple syrup. This stack presses all our sweet ‘n’ salty buttons and we’re certainly not mad about it. Not sold yet? Personalise your stack with the ‘create your pancake’ menu. Start by picking your base - from beetroot, to charcoal and Matcha and more. Now for the fun part.. Pimp your pancake with - well, just about anything your heart desires! With choices like smoked apple, choco chips, popcorn, granola and homemade peanut butter - we’ll just go ahead and take the works thanks! We’re adding Funky Pancakes to our regular brekkie spot rotation, hell – lunch too. Excuse us while we race back ASAP with our fellas in tow to road test the Mancake (Popcorn chicken is a food group.. right?!). Open from 7am-5pm daily, don’t wait ‘til Shrove Tuesday to check this one out, scoot on over and get ‘em while they’re hot crew! https://www.facebook.com/guguidebali/ https://cangguguide.com

They’re soarin’, flyin’: 40 critically-endangered Bali starlings released from conservation into the wild usually sold for IDR15-20 million (US$1,056-1,408) each in the illegal wildlife blackmarket.
40 Bali starlings, also known as Bali myna birds, were released into the wild from the Bali Safari and Marine Park conservation in Gianyar regency. The species, usually called Jalak or Curik Bali in Indonesian, is native to the island and one of its most iconic mascots. Bali starlings are identified by their white feathers, black wings and tail tips, unique blue marks around their eyes, and long, spiky feathers on the tops of their heads. The release ceremony was led by Bali Vice Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana, Bali Police Deputy Chief I Gede Alit Widana, West Bali National Park head Agus Ngurah Krisna, and the head of Bali Starling Preservation Association (APBC), Tony Sumampouw.
Tony said the 40 Bali starlings were obtained from Japanese and European animal associations in 2017. During captivity, the birds were trained to fly into the wild. “The monitoring team will observe them in the morning and evening to see their situation in the wild. We’ll monitor them for three years, until they’re ready to breed,” Tony said today, as quoted by Kumparan. The Bali starling is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
“To prevent [poaching or illegal wildlife trade], we use microchips. If someone caught them, we can prove [that they’re violating the law] to the police by scanning the chip. When the chip number appears, we can find out the bird’s data. The birds will also wear colored rings so the monitoring team can tell which one is which,” Tony said.

Conservation officials in Bali say that, apart from natural factors, poaching of these birds has driven them close to extinction. Captured Bali starlings are
According to data from West Bali National Park, there are currently 191 Bali starlings in the wild and 280 in conservation captivity. Bali starlings, which are native to the forests in the northwestern part of the island, were first discovered in 1910. The species was designated a symbol of the island-province in 1991. The species’ binomial name, Leucopsar rothschildi, was named after the British zoologist/ornithologist (bird expert) Lord Walter Rothschild, who first discovered the species.
