Bali officials ready to turn away travelers who defy mudik ban With Indonesia set to ban the annual homecoming exodus tradition next month, officials in Bali say the province will step up security measures at various ports of entry, ready to turn away travellers who defy the restrictions. “Mudik is banned during the COVID-19 pandemic for everyone, especially civil servants, because they must set an example for the public,” I Made Rentin, secretary of Bali’s COVID-19 task force, said. Popularly known as mudik, this tradition coincides with the Eid al-Fitr holiday and sees around 30 million Indonesians visiting their hometowns annually before the pandemic. This year’s Eid holiday is expected to fall on May 13 and 14, with a collective leave day scheduled for May 12. “Points of entry will be guarded with heightened measures. [In Bali] this will

be Ngurah Rai airport, in Gilimanuk [Port], and others,” Rentin said. Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy previously announced that the ban will go into force from May 6 to 17, while citizens are strongly advised not to travel out of their respective regions prior and after the mudik ban period. Officials said the decision to ban mudik again this year is to curb potential risks to COVID-19 transmission. According to Rentin, there are few exceptions to the rule, such as those who have to attend to urgent matters, including the death of a family member. These travellers must carry with them a letter from either village or neighbourhood officials, the local COVID-19 task force, or the hospital where the deceased was treated. The

document must be presented alongside negative results from a COVID-19 test. Though Muhadjir said the ban is in place from May 6 nationwide, Rentin said Bali will begin to enforce it on May 9. “The mudik ban is about six to seven days starting from May 9 … if people are traveling with incomplete documents they will be told to return,” Rentin said. Prosecutors demand 12 years for French national accused of child rape A 53-year-old French national accused of sexual abuse against a minor is undergoing trial in Bali, with prosecutors in the case demanding a 12-year prison sentence for the defendant. The defendant, identified as EAPM, was alleged to have raped a minor as many as 10 times since 2017. The crimes reportedly took place when the victim slept over at the former’s home. Not only are the victim friends with EAPM’s child, the defendant himself is also reportedly friends with the victim’s father.

Authorities nab Indian national for allegedly extorting diners at Denpasar food stall An Indian national was detained in Denpasar yesterday, following reports from residents that the foreigner had been extorting customers at a local food stall. “According to information from the food stall owner and the public, [the foreigner] often extorted customers at the stall and even the stall itself, including eating without paying,” Dewa Sayoga, head of the public order agency (Satpol PP) in Denpasar, said. Satpol PP apprehended the foreigner yesterday after they were alerted to his presence at the food stall by the owner. Authorities, who first received reports about the foreigner about a week ago, are now coordinating with the Denpasar Police, Immigration, and the Indian Consulate to determine whether or not his deeds constitute a crime. They are reportedly still waiting for language assistance from the consulate.

The case came to light last September, when the 12-year-old victim was allegedly assaulted during a visit to the Bali Wake Park in Denpasar. According to reports, the victim’s father noticed his son going into the changing room and then followed by EAPM not long after, raising his suspicions. “[What the father saw] inside the toilet was the child standing with his pants down to his knees, while the defendant was kneeling right in front of him,” prosecutors previously said. The father filed a police report soon after, and police managed to gather enough evidence to process the case. According to reports, EAPM had threatened the victim to keep the abuse a secret and promised him gifts. A medical examination also showed bruises in the victim’s anus which resulted from a blunt object, leading to suspicion that the victim had been raped. Under Indonesian law, sexual assault on minors carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence. . (coconuts.co/balidiscovery.com)

followers — in late February, and has since been promoting her debut in the All Stars edition of the reality show. It doesn’t seem like everyone is loving the idea of her appearing on national television in Australia, however. One look at the comment section of the post above, which was from the show’s official account, and you might be reminded of how Corby became a national fixation in Australia throughout the course of her trial (and after) in Indonesia.

Bali drug convict Schapelle Corby is Dancing With the Stars in Australia Australian drug convict Schapelle Corby, who spent nine years in Kerobokan Prison for smuggling weed into Bali, is one of the newest cast members in Australia’s Dancing With the Stars, the latest season of which is set to premiere this Sunday. Since returning to Australia more than three years ago, Corby appears to have banked on her infamy by setting herself on a path to become a reality star. She participated in a quasimilitary training television program called SAS Australia just last year, for example, and told New Idea that she was “keeping her options open” regarding TV opportunities. The 43-year-old first shared news of her joining Dancing With the Stars via Instagram — where she has more than 167,000

“Won’t watch a convicted drug smuggler on a supposed family friendly show,” one user wrote.

“Drug smuggler on Dancing With the Stars what a joke hope we can vote as she [should] be gone first,” another said. In case you need a little refresher, Corby was arrested in Ngurah Rai International Airport back in 2004 for smuggling 4.2 kilograms of marijuana in her boogie board bag. Though she consistently maintained her innocence and insisted that the drugs were planted, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2005. The sentence was later cut after standard remissions and an appeal to the president, and she was released on parole in early 2014. She stayed in Bali for the length of her parole, which wrapped up in May 2017. (coconuts.co)
