31-year-old South African national found hanged in Canggu guest house A 31-year-old South African national was found hanged at his room in Canggu, North Kuta last week, making this at least the third incident of suspected suicide reported in Bali in the last week. North Kuta sub-precinct chief Marzel Doni said the victim, identified as HGW, was found on Wednesday morning by a friend who stayed in the room next door at the same guest house. The friend opened HGW’s unlocked room and found him standing stiff with cloth wrapped around his neck. Authorities were later called to the scene
to evacuate the body, with Doni confirming that there were no signs of foul play on the victim’s body. “There were different kinds of medicines inside the room. For now we suspect the victim may have been depressed that he decided to commit suicide,” Doni said. HGW is at least the third apparent suicide case reported in Bali this past week, after a 15-year-old girl was believed to have committed suicide by overdosing on potassium on Sunday at her home in Buleleng regency, while a 52-year-old Japanese national was
found hanged at his homestay in Denpasar. Indonesia currently does not have a fully functioning government-run suicide prevention hotline, but if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and/or contemplating suicide, you can get more information and resources from several local NGOs dealing with mental health and suicide prevention, such as intothelightid.org and Bali-based Love Inside Suicide Awareness (LISA) helpline at +628113855472. French pedophile sentenced to 8 years for child rape in Bali French national Emmanuel Alain Pascal Maillet decided against an appeal this week, after the Denpasar Court sentenced him to eight years in prison for sexual abuse towards a minor in Bali. “Our client has accepted his punishment,” Maillet’s lawyer Maya Arshanti said.
Half of Indonesia’s COVID-19 red zones are in Bali, task force says
Indonesia may have recorded a notable decrease of COVID-19 “red zones” across the country at the end of March, but the number of high-risk areas have doubled again since then with five regions in Bali accounting for half the total. As of April 11, 10 regencies and cities in Indonesia are deemed as having the highest risk of COVID-19 transmission, five of which are located in Bali: Badung, Gianyar, Buleleng, Tabanan, and Denpasar. Others in the list are located in North Sumatra, South Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan. The Southeast Asian country categorizes COVID-19 risks across its 314 regencies and cities into four zones, identified as red, orange, yellow, and green — each color corresponding to different risks of transmission, namely high-risk, medium-risk, low-risk, to those reporting zero cases, respectively. Officials said that the zoning system is not based on the number of cases alone. “This latest development must be followed with consistency and control of COVID-19, whether it’s in the implementation of health protocols or anticipatory policies, as well as behavioral change in regions,” Indonesia’s COVID-19 task force spokesman, Wiku Adisasmito, said during a virtual discussion yesterday.
The Denpasar Court sentenced Maillet to eight years in prison and a fine of IDR100 million (US$6,828) last Thursday, the verdict of which was followed by both the defendant and prosecutors declaring that they will consider an appeal. The final sentence was lower than what prosecutors previously demanded, which was 12 years’ imprisonment. Meanwhile, sexual assault on minors carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence under Indonesian law. As of today, prosecutors have yet to decide whether or not they will file an appeal. Maillet’s crime came to light last September, following an assault that took place at the Bali Wake Park in Denpasar and was subsequently discovered by the victim’s father. Prosecutors said Maillet raped the underage victim as many as 10 times since 2017, with most of the crimes taking place when the victim slept over at the predator’s home. According to reports, the victim is friends with Maillet’s child, while Maillet himself is also well-acquainted with the victim’s father. The 53-year-old had threatened the victim to keep the abuse a secret and promised him gifts. A medical examination also showed bruises in the victim’s anus which resulted from a blunt object, leading to suspicion that the victim had been raped. “What the defendant did has damaged the child’s future,” presiding judge Heriyanti said when reading the verdict last week.
