Foreigners must now be vaccinated to fly into/out of Bali, but getting the jab is an issue Indonesia’s new no vax, no fly policy is sending foreign nationals in Bali into a frenzy, from anti-vaxxers condemning the move, to travelers who prefer to get the COVID jab in their home countries, to those frustrated with not being able to get vaccinated even if they wanted to. The COVID-19 Task Force issued the new requirements yesterday, which mandates that foreign nationals entering Indonesia must test negative for the coronavirus and to show a card or certificate that indicates they have received their full dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Foreigners who are already in Indonesia and are wishing to travel within the country are subject to domestic travel rules for Indonesian nationals, with one notable rule being that they are allowed to travel after having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 jab as well as a negative test result. The vaccine certificate requirement does not apply to foreign nationals with diplomatic visas, visiting on an official state capacity, or entering Indonesia under the Travel Corridor Arrangement
scheme. Indonesians traveling from abroad can get their vaccines once they arrive in the country. The new regulation was met with strong reactions from foreign nationals, who took to social media to air their frustrations. One Facebook user said they recently arrived in Jakarta from the Netherlands and intended to travel to Bali, but are now unable to do so because they “do not want to be vaccinated.” Another user, who says he’s seeking to leave Indonesia as soon as possible, wrote last night: “I’m not interested in taking the vaccines that are available here in Indonesia for personal reasons and just trying to get my family back home.” Even for those who want to get vaccinated in Indonesia, they must meet certain criteria and requirements. In their latest circular, the COVID-19 Task Force said that foreign nationals who are already in Indonesia and want to travel are obliged to get vaccinated through their employers via the independent
schemes available in the country, namely the Gotong Royong program. All of the new requirements are applicable at least until July 20, which is the last day of Indonesia’s Emergency Enforcement of Restrictions on Public Activities (Emergency PPKM or PPKM Darurat in Indonesian), pending further review for extension. An announcement issued by the Ngurah Rai International Airport this morning says that passengers can get their COVID-19 jabs starting today at the airport, though foreigners are required to show their temporary stay permits (KITAS) or permanent stay permits (KITAP). Online, some foreigners without KITAS or KITAP have shared success stories on getting their COVID-19 jabs, but the flurry of information is still widely unclear for the time being. Some expressed hopes that officials will amend the rules to make their lives easier, but are resigned to sharing helpful information on social media for now. (coconuts.co)

Bali beaches closed as coronavirus cases climb Beaches across Bali have been closed in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus, amid tightened restrictions imposed in a number of regions in Indonesia to curb a new and deadly COVID-19 wave. Despite the new measures under the Emergency Enforcement of Restrictions on Public Activities (Emergency PPKM) — slated to be enforced until at least July 20 — pecalang (traditional Balinese security forces) officers say they caught people surfing on Kuta Beach this morning. The surfers were then instructed to leave and to stay at home, unless for urgent matters. Emergency PPKM mandates the closure of all public facilities, covering public areas, public parks, as well as tourist attractions. Beaches appear to fall under that category, with authorities having put up signs and banners to indicate the closures, including in Pantai Sindhu in Denpasar and Pantai Kedungu in Tabanan regency. Yesterday, Bali reported 401 new cases. It is the highest daily caseload the province has seen for about five months. Officials from Badung regency, where many popular beaches and tourist spots are located, have confirmed that all tourist attractions in the region will be closed during Emergency PPKM.
“Our people, including the sellers along Pantai Kuta, are very much affected especially with the closure during Emergency PPKM. But we must comply with the hope that the pandemic will end soon,” Kuta Village Chief Wayan Wasista said.

Russian national claiming to be Interpol officer arrested for alleged extortion in Bali
Police in Bali arrested a Russian national for allegedly extorting a businessman while claiming to be a member of Interpol, with the victim reportedly losing IDR400 million (US$27,661) worth of cash and 21 motorcycles. In a press conference held earlier today, the head of Bali Police’s General Crimes Unit Djuhandhani Rahardjo said that the crime began when the suspect — identified by his initials EB — went to the victim’s vehicle rental business in Canggu back in February. There, EB
reportedly claimed to be a member of Interpol and accused the victim of running an illegal business. EB extorted the victim and demanded him to hand over 21 of his motorbikes, threatening to report the issue to Indonesian authorities if he didn’t comply. EB’s terror continued, as he would send the victim messages via WhatsApp accusing him of drug trafficking as well “If the victim did not obey him, then the victim would be reported to the police. It was said there that the victim’s business was known by authorities as a place to store and sell drugs,” Djuhandhani said. In late May, EB contacted the victim and requested IDR400 million and one Yamaha N-Max motorbike as a “security fee.” The victim reportedly complied with his request as he’d feared prison time,

but grew suspicious and eventually reported the matter to actual authorities on July 1. Police say they are in pursuit of two other Russian nationals, identified as OB and MZ, who may be involved in the scam operation. “We have only arrested one, they must be part of a group but we are sure that there are other victims who may be afraid to report [to authorities]. We will continue to look into it,” Djuhandhani said. EB has been charged with violation of articles on extortion under Indonesia’s Criminal Code (KUHP), which carries a maximum prison sentence of 4 years. (coconuts.co)
