Bali to Reopen Starting 17 August? in COVID-19 cases can be brought under control, and the national economy can gradually return to productivity. These benchmarks are generally welcomed by Bali’s tourism industry but are considered “too late,” with a much earlier restart to tourism demanded.
RadarBali.com reports that the Central Government has signaled the national economy’s possibility to reopen starting from September 2021. Luhut Binsar Pandjatan, the COVID-19 Czar who serves as the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, confirmed that President Joko Widodo has ordered the national apparatus to optimize vaccination; the 3T program (trust, trial, and travel); and the tenets of washing hands, wearing a mask and avoiding public gatherings. In committing to the above, the Government is confident that the surge
Wayan Puspa Negara, a tourism practitioner, said on Tuesday, 03 August 2021: “Not September! Today is the day to reopen the tourism destination. Those of us in Bali, especially those in Samigita (Seminyak, Legian, Kuta), are ready to open.” Continuing, Puspa Negara said: “We recommend to President Jokowi that the economy of Bali be open opened on 17 August 2021 as a gift on Indonesian Independence Day.” A former regional legislator Puspa Negara affirmed that Bali as a tourism destination is ready to reopen because of the verification and certification process completed for Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability (CHSE). What’s more, the main tourist areas of Ubud, Sanur, and Nusa Dua are now operated as “safe” green zones.
Puspa Negara also called on President Joko Widodo to open public facilities and allow restaurants and bars to remain open until 11:00 pm. Puspa explained how there are 142 hotels, 132 restaurants, and 350 companies supporting tourism in the Legian area of Bali, such as art shops, spas, karaoke lounges, and alike. By opening restaurants and bars, the need for food and refreshment by tourist visitors can thereby be met, Adding: “If these places are only allowed to open until 8:00 pm, pity (the visitors) who can only eat ‘nasi jingo’ (rice packets) on the side of the roads. At the very least, allow these bars and restaurants to be open until 11:00 pm, or if possible 24 hours. The main thing is for health protocols to be stringent.” Puspa Negara also recommended the small-scale, medium-sized, and largescale businesses jointly sign an integrity pact. He believes that such an integrity pact would pave the way for sanctions against any member found to be violating health protocols. ((balidiscovery.com))

Children’s foundation pleads for online donations amid dwindling support from lack of tourists in Bali “This mechanism is gone due to no tourists [coming to Bali] and visitors’ restrictions due to COVID,” Rodney Westerlaken, a board member at JOS, told Coconuts, adding that they have seen about a 60 percent reduction in donations during the pandemic.
A Bali-based foundation working with children in need is calling for online donations to keep its projects running, with the devastation caused by COVID-19 impacting its stream of donors. The Jodie O’Shea (JOS) House said on its GoFundMe page that prior to the pandemic, tourists would often drop by to make a donation, whether in the form of food, cash, or clothing. However, with the coronavirus outbreak still raging, it said that “this support has completely disappeared.”
JOS House is now turning to online fundraising, hoping to raise €10,000 (US$11,744) through their ongoing campaign to meet the needs of children who are already in their care and are affected by the public health crisis. The foundation, also known as Yayasan Cinta Kasih Anak, said they no longer have sufficient resources to continue providing a safe haven for children in need. “We do not see a way out without your help,” they wrote.

Based in Denpasar, JOS House says they work with children from poor families and abusive environments, as well as orphans. Since last year, JOS has been working with the Westerlaken Foundation to reunite children with their families when it is in the best interest of the child, a program they say is based on a UN General Assembly resolution and Indonesian law. So far, they have reunified 51 children with their families. “Research shows that children develop much better when living in a loving family environment rather than being institutionalized,” Westerlaken says, further explaining that part of JOS House’s work is to support kids in underprivileged and needy households. 3 people arrested over sunk overloaded passenger ferry off Bali coast
Three people have been arrested for their alleged roles in the sinking of passenger ferry KMP Yunicee off the coast of Bali in June, which killed at least 11 people. The ferry was headed for Bali’s Gilimanuk Port from Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi, East Java, on June 29. The accident occurred when KMP Yunicee tried to dock but was swept away by tides and tipped over to the side, before it started sinking. Though initial reports suggested different numbers, authorities later said 77 people were on board the ferry. Fifty-one people were rescued, but 11 people died and 15 others were declared missing. During a press conference this week, Yassin Kosasih from the National Police said the ship captain, identified by his initials IS, has already been detained in Banyuwangi. “The captain of the ship did not perform his role to provide safety which resulted in loss of life and property,” Yassin said. NW and RMS, branch head of the ferry company and an official from the Ketapang Port, respectively, have also been named as suspects. “Based on legal facts there is a strong suspicion that both suspects had a role in the sinking of KMP Yunicee,” Yassin said. According to I Gusti Nyoman Sudarsana from the Bali Police, KMP Yunicee had been traveling at over-capacity. It should have only loaded about 35 tons of cargo, but ended up transporting nearly 230 tons.
