Still Closed to International Visitors Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, has clarified that Bali is yet to be declared open for foreign tourists. At an online press conference on Monday, 20 September 2021, Sandiaga underlined that only two Indonesian international gateways are open to foreign tourists: Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta and Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi. Quoted by Kompas.com, the Tourism Minister said: “At this moment, Bali is not yet open. International air flights to Bali are also still closed. International flights are limited to Manado and Jakarta.” Business travel is facilitated, but the international meeting market remains closed. Indonesia is moving with full force in optimizing COVID-19 vaccination
programs in Bali. As reported by Kompas.com, the injection of the first dosage of coronavirus vaccine has reached 95.5% of the Island’s population, with 66.3% fully vaccinated with two injections. The government-sponsored online application PeduliLindungi to verify the health and vaccination status of the public is now actively used in Bali at 503 hotels, 648 restaurants, 23 tourism destinations, and 14 shopping malls. Continuing, Minister Sandiaga said: “We hope that the Provincial Government of Bali will continue to coordinate and create Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for a trial program to welcome tourist visitors. We also hope that hospitals will be ready to handle COVID-19 and have 35 hotels ready to swerve as self-quarantine facilities.”
The Minister said that he hoped movie theaters operating in PPKM Category 2 and 3 areas would faithfully implement health protocols in a disciplined manner. Rigorous implementation of health protocols and vaccinations will combine to prevent a third wave of new COVID-19 infections. (balidicovery.com)

Life Death Sentence Commuted to 20 Years was changed to the punishment of death before a firing squad.
A 31-year-old Sierra Leone man, Emmanuel O Ihejirika, convicted in Bali in 2004 of trying to smuggle 461 grams of heroin concealed in his alimentary tract, has seen his death sentence commuted to a 20-year prison sentence. In 2004, Emmanuel swallowed 31 condom capsules weighing 461 grams containing heroin. Custom officials compelled the man to undergo x-rays at a Bali hospital resulting in a trial and a life sentence in 2005. When that sentence was appealed to a higher court, Emmanuel’s life sentence
In 2014, Emmanuel’s name was listed among a group of prisoners to be imminently executed. However, the execution was delayed when his Bali lawyers, Robert Khuwana and Frans Hendra Winata, filed another appeal to the High Courts. Commenting on Monday, 13 September 2021, regarding Emmanuel’s commutation of sentence to 20 years in prison, Robert Khuwana told RadarBali.com: “With the appeal decision of 20 years in prison, Emmanuel, who has been in jail since 2004, can be freed in 2024. Indonesia’s last executions before a firing squad saw four men shot in 2016, three of whom were foreign nationals. In 2015, 14 prisoners on death row were executed, including 12 foreigners and one Indonesian female.

Bali vice governor wants Ngurah Rai airport to open for international flights
Bali’s vice governor said he was disappointed with the central government’s decision to exclude Ngurah Rai International Airport from serving international arrivals.
As laid out in a Transportation Ministry circular published early this week, only two airports — Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang and Sam Ratulangi International Airport in the North Sulawesi capital of Manado — have been designated as the two entry points for international arrivals via air travel. The decision came after the government relaxed its border closure last week.
Bali [should be] designated as an essential arrival [point], because [the Ngurah Rai airport] has adhered to the protocols,” Cok Ace said yesterday.
Bali Vice Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, or Cok Ace, said Ngurah Rai should have been immediately considered as one of the country’s international gateways.
Cok Ace said he hopes that the central government would review the decision and set Bali as a quarantine destination for international arrivals, as it would boost the island’s ailing tourism industry.
Talk has been rife in recent weeks about Bali reopening its doors to foreign tourists, with one plan under consideration being turning the island into a “tourist sandbox” emulating Thailand’s Phuket.
