Ministry of Health mulls 3-month booster shot interval for all age groups New regulations being considered by the Ministry of Health could mean that Indonesians won’t have to wait so long to get their COVID-19 booster jabs.
“Soon we will allow booster shots for all age groups with the interval of between three to six months,” Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono said today.
When the booster shot program was launched earlier this year, a minimum six-month interval was required between the second dose and the booster dose. This week, in the government’s attempt to expedite the booster shot rollout to the elderly, it reduced the interval period to three months for those aged 60 and above.
Dante did not specify exactly when the interval period would be shortened for all.
And now, the ministry is mulling the same interval period for all age groups.
The deputy minister did, however, stress the importance of booster shots in overcoming new COVID-19 outbreaks and especially the Omicron variant. Citing Ministry of Health data, the risk of death from COVID-19 is reduced by 97 percent with a booster shot.
In addition, Dante said the government may also consider administering second booster shots (or fourth overall) to the public should health experts recommend the measure in the future. Indonesia is concurrently administering primary doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots. Nearly 70 percent, amounting to some 141 million people, of the targeted population have received their second dose, and the program for the administration of the first and second doses is expected to conclude in June. Tourism Minister, Bali governor push to reactivate visa on arrivals for int’l visitors remains suspended until further notice. Following calls from Bali tourism operators who are heavily dependent on tourism dollars, Sandiaga said that it is time for VoAs to be reactivated in order to encourage more travelers. Two men on a mission to end quarantine requirements for foreign tourists arriving in Bali sooner rather than later, Bali Governor Wayan Koster and Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, agreed yesterday to push for the suspension of visas on arrival to be lifted as well. Despite having been open to international visitors as of October 2021 (initially to citizens of 19 countries and eventually all travelers as of Feb. 4), anybody who wishes to enter Bali (and Indonesia as a whole) is required to apply for a visa pre-departure. Visa on Arrivals (VoA), a popular option for tourists before the pandemic,
“The request from the Governor [Koster] and I agree with [is that] together we will push for VoAs,” said Sandiaga on Wednesday. While acknowledging the importance of lifting the suspension, Sandiaga said that COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols must remain a priority. Separately, Koster said that he had been in discussion with Sandiaga about the VoA issue. In addition, the two also discussed Koster’s proposal to end quarantine requirements for international visitors arriving in Bali, with the governor arguing that travel restrictions should be relaxed as the current COVID-19 crisis is manageable. “We just have to see the development in the following week. If the [cases] are consistently decreasing and it can be stable, I think that will be conducive,” he said. Koster pointed out the two direct flights landing in Bali recently, which, according to him, saw only one out of a total of 150 passengers testing positive for COVID-19. For him, it would be a pity if all of the people who tested negative for COVID-19 still need to be in quarantine. “[But] of course this [quarantine erasure proposal] needs approval from the central government,” he said. Bali, known locally as the Island of Gods and famous for its beaches, surfing spots, nightclubs, and temples, saw the arrival of 639 international visitors to the island from Feb. 1 to Feb. 18. 10 3 Airlines Apply to Fly to Bali in March • Jetstar Airways. Fahmi commented that he welcomed plans by the three airlines to reactivate their former routes to Bali. The PAP I CEO said the resumption of more flights to Bali is a positive sign that international airlines and foreign tourists are ready to holiday in Bali. With Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines bringing an end to the prolonged drought of direct international flights to Bali with regularly scheduled service from Tokyo (GA) and Singapore (SQ), the management company for Bali’s airport confirms three additional international flight slots starting in March 2022 are now on request. Both Balipost.com and the State News Agency Antara, are quoting the CEO of PT Angkasa Pura I (PAP I), Faik Fahmi, who says the three airlines have started the formal application process to secure a landing slot in Bali. The three airlines said to be preparing to fly to Bali are: • •
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Scoot Tiger Air
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines: PAP I said that KLM Royal Dutch Airlines plans to operate four weekly flights as an extension to their current Amsterdam to Singapore service using Boeing 777s configured to carry 408 passengers. Scoot Tiger Air: PAP I has received an application from Scoot Tiger Air to fly three times each week connecting Singapore – Denpasar using Airbus A-320 aircraft with 108 seats. seats. Meanwhile, the SydneyDenpasar and Melbourne-Denpasar services with Jetstar will be flown on either Boeing B-788 with 335 seats or an Airbus A-321/A-320 with, respectively, 323 or 186 seats. Fahmi took the occasion to reiterate PAP I’s commitment to restore international airline connectivity during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. This commitment is manifested in PAP I’s strict enforcement of all government-mandated health protocols. Adding: “We hope that the number of international passengers and international flights destined to Bali will continue to gradually increase and assist the revitalization of the people’s economy and the Island’s tourism industry in a sustainable manner.” In 2019, before the global pandemic, Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport welcomed 13,8 million passengers traveling on 78,388 flights. By contrast, only 638 international travelers landed in Bali in the first 18 days of February (1-18 February 2022). (balidiscovery.com)

18 y.o. Balinese jailed for statutory rape of a student The Denpasar District Court yesterday sentenced IKTA, 18, to 5-and-a-half years in prison after having found him guilty of statutory rape. The victim is identified as SD, 17, who is still studying at a local vocational high school. Presiding Judge I Wayan Sukradana said that IKTA was guilty of having violated Article 81 Paragraph (2) of the 2016 Child Protection Act. “The defendant intentionally manipulated, using lies and seduction,
the child into having sex with him,” Wayan said. Prosecutor Dina K Sitepu originally sought eight years behind bars for IKTA. Both parties are still mulling whether they will appeal the sentence. IKTA and his victim reportedly met via WhatsApp on June 4, 2021. After dating for a while, IKTA convinced SD to come with him to his house in Kuta, Badung. Despite initial rejections, IKTA kept seducing SD and promised he would marry her if the victim became pregnant.
