Julia Roberts ‘returns’ to Bali in an upcoming rom-com with George Clooney shot in Australia photography actually took place in Queensland, Australia between November of last year and February. It was understandable, perhaps, to shoot the movie there due to travel restrictions in Bali at the time. The shooting took place on Haslewood Island and production crews reportedly attempted to make it Bali-like by featuring local fishing boats and beachside huts.
Remember Eat, Pray, Love? Whether you liked it or not (no judgment, either way), the 2010 biographical romantic drama based on author Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir has, for better or worse, influenced how and why people travel – especially in Bali. The impact of the iconic memoir-cum-movie can be seen in people quoting the title on their travel social media posts, searching for the very healer (RIP) featured on Eat, Pray, Love to have their own slice of Gilbert’s journey, to an AirBnB even marketing a house where Julia Roberts, who played Gilbert in the film, and Javier Bardem, who played Gilbert’s love interest, met and got
those Bali loving vibes in Ubud. An upcoming romantic comedy flick, Ticket to Paradise, sees Julia Robert’s return to the Island of Gods, this time with Hollywood hunk George Clooney. Scheduled for release in October this year, the Ol Parkerdirected film follows two divorced parents flying to Bali to sabotage a planned marriage between their daughter (played by Kaitlyn Dever) and a local man named Gede (played by French-Indonesian actor Maxime Bouttier).
Well, sort of, since the film’s principal 4
Universal Pictures released a trailer for the movie yesterday, and the reaction on Indonesian social media has been mixed, to say the least. Many pointed out that the movie was not actually shot in Bali, while others said it was understandable due to constraints brought about by the pandemic and that the film promotes Bali nevertheless. One commenter pointed out that Bouttier, who plays a Balinese man, is not a native of the island. All being said, are you ready for the de facto Eat, Pray, Love part 2? (coconuts.co)

Cheap yet chic: Warung Nads offers delectable Indonesian dishes with an idyllic view in the heart of Umalas restaurant – noting that other more established restaurants in the area rarely serve Indonesian dishes. “There’s a huge potential there. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing, we went with our guts to move fast to build an Indonesian dining place in just two and a half months. Truly crazy,” he said. Conceding that Warung Nads is their first restaurant and they did not have prior experience in the F&B business, Ayun said that they are grateful for help from their friends who were supportive of the restaurant’s concept.
There are many eateries in Bali where you can feast on good food with picture-perfect, idyllic rice fields around you. Some might even say that it is the quintessential Island of Gods experience (other than beaches, of course).
over the country, ayam woku berempah (spiced chicken) from North Sulawesi, tongkol sisit bumbu balado (red-hot spicy tuna) from Sumatra, urap (mixed veggies with grated coconuts) from Bali, and sweet tempe (soybean cake).
The major downside of other restaurants is, perhaps, the lack of variety when it comes to Indonesian dishes. Not to mention the soaring prices, especially at establishments located in the island’s most popular spots.
They also have nasi bakar rendang (grilled rice with rendang spice) with well-steamed rice covered in banana leaves. When the thirst is real and the sun is hot, Warung Nads offers, among others, fresh rujak (mixed fruits) for dessert.
Warung Nads is a brand new little gem in the heart of Umalas, Kerobokan that opens daily and serves delicious Indonesian dishes at affordable prices compared to other joints in the area. The blissful restaurant is surrounded by paddy fields and is located on the same street as several other dining places that are perhaps more popular among visitors, such as Nook and Warung Italia.
“It does take a village to build a restaurant,” Ayun said. Warung Nads’ simplistic approach and humble image have attracted many customers. The restaurant is already popular among local artists, such as
What sets Warung Nads apart is that not only does it let its local dishes and paddy fields shine, but it also puts an emphasis on being a place where people can meet up and let their hair down with its relaxed atmosphere. “We have wanted to open a simple restaurant with delicious meals that are affordable for everybody – especially Indonesians – for so long. I was inspired by both the college cafeteria and Raminten restaurant in my hometown, Yogyakarta,” Ayun Sundari, who owns Warung Nads with her husband Husin Daud, told Coconuts Bali.

Bali may host Israeli soccer team for U-20 World Cup next year as agreed by them and the central government last year when they discussed the matter.
Indonesia is finding itself in an awkward situation as it prepares to host the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, as it must find a way to allow Israel’s youth national soccer team to take part in the competition despite the lack of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The Muslim-majority nation is reportedly mulling Bali, the country’s Hindu-majority island, to host all of Israel’s matches during the competition. The Israeli team qualified for next year’s U-20 World Cup after securing a spot in the semifinal round at the 2022 U-19 EURO Cup in Slovakia. In addition to France (Israel’s opponent in the semifinal), England and Italy are eligible for next year’s U-20 World Cup, set to take place from May 20 to June 11, 2023 in Indonesia.
Local news outlets reported that Indonesia’s National Football Association (PSSI) considered a solution where Bali would host the Israeli players during their stay in Indonesia, and that all of their matches would take place at Kapten I Wayan Dipta Football Stadium in Gianyar.
relations with Israel. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, ini his last presidential campaign, reiterated that the nation sides with Palestine and support their fight for independence.
“They [Israel team] will be in the [tournament’s] group in Bali or other regions, we will communicate later,” Yunus said. This is not the first time that Indonesia has been put in an awkward situation involving Israel in sports events. Separately, PSSI deputy secretary general Maaike Ira Puspita revealed that she had heard about the proposed solution, but conceded that there have been no internal discussions within the association about it. “The 2023 U-20 World Cup is FIFA’s event. So, FIFA will decide where Israel will be,” she said yesterday. Maaike added that there are still other issues for PSSI to resolve in order for Indonesia to host the tournament, including improving the quality of the six venues, namely Jakabaring Stadium in Palembang, Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, Si Jalak Harupat in Bandung, Manahan in Solo, Gelora Bung Tomo in Surabaya, and Gianyar’s I Wayan Dipta. On Tuesday, Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali stated on his official website that Indonesia would host “all countries that have qualified for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.” “That problem (Israel’s eligibility) has been in discussion since 2019,” he said, adding that per the agreement between PSSI and FIFA, soccer and politics should be separated.
PSSI secretary general Yunus Nusi said that Indonesia has long been a strong supporter of Palestine and, officially, has no diplomatic the association would accommodate Israel

In 1957, President Soekarno instructed the Indonesian soccer team to forfeit their match with Israel. PSSI, at the time, proposed for a “neutral” country to host the match-up but FIFA rejected the idea. In tennis, the Indonesian Billie Jean King Cup team refused to play Israel in a world play-off in 2006. The decision, also reportedly due to an instruction by the government, saw the team be subject to a fine and a ban from the tournament the year after. Interestingly, Indonesia had, in fact, hosted an Israeli national for a sporting event, when Israeli shuttler Misha Zilberman plied his trade at the 2015 Badminton World Championships in Jakarta. It took Zilberman six months to send all documents necessary for him to enter Indonesia. Still, he was reportedly stuck in Singapore at some point due to issues with his Indonesian visa. The shuttler managed to fly to Indonesia at the eleventh hour and, despite having to be given a series of protective measures for his own safety, managed to compete at the prestigious tournament.
