Anotherbombdetonatedshortlyafter outsidetheSarinightclub,beforea finalexplosioninfrontoftheUS consulate.
Stan’snewseries,Bali2002,takesa lookattheseattacksandtheir aftermath.Thephysicalandemotional traumasplayoutwithdesperationand intensity.
Theseriesalsoshowshowour humanitycomesouttoshinein desperateandviolenttimes.Itshows friendshelpingfriends,peoplehelping strangers,doctorsonholidayrushing tothehospitaltolendahandandthe AustralianFederalPolice’sdirectiveto helpeveryone–andnotonlyprioritise Australians.
Whiletheseriescreatorsshouldbe laudedfortheircloseconsultations withattacksurvivorsinmakingthe series,thisdramatisationhighlights theverypublicnatureofterrorism. Thispublicnaturecanhavehighly personalimpacts.
In myresearch intotheeventsofthis nightandtheiraftermath,Ihave spokentomanypeoplewhowere thereorlostsomeoneintheattack.
Somesurvivorswillfindsolaceinthis sharingoftheirstories;otherswill strugglewiththepublic commemoration.
Somepeopleaffectedbyterrorismfind tellingtheirstorycanbeharmfulto theirhealthandwellbeing.Itlocks themintoatimeandplaceofpainand suffering.
Forothers,tellingtheirstoriesandof lovedone’sexperiences,livesand deathsisanimportantpartoftheir healingprocesses.

Beforeandafter
Whenaterrorattackoccurs, the mediacancreate asenseofa “victim”identity,whichdividesa person’slifeintoonebeforeandafter terror,asiftheycameintobeingat
thatmoment.
Bali2002buysintothisdivision.It givesscanttimetooursurvivors beforetheevent,andthesecharacters feelshallow.
Theseriesalsostrugglesinfindingthe rightbalancebetweenthestoriesof theterroristsandthesurvivors.Too muchfocusisgiventotheindividuals whoundertooktheseattacks.More importantarethestoriesofthevictims, survivors,familymembersandfirst responders.
ForsomesurvivorsIhavespokento, thetraileralonehastriggered traumaticresponses.Theircapacityto watchtheseriesisdoubtful.
Theseriesweavestogethera dramatisationoftheeventsalongside realfootage.Thisrawfootageadds realism,buttheuseofthisfootageis notsignposted,anditcouldbe triggeringeventosurvivorswhomight feeluptowatchingadramatised versionofevents.
Endurance
Bali2002isbeingreleasedinadvance ofthe20thanniversaryoftheattacks.
Inmyresearch,Ifoundrecognising andrememberingtheseeventson fewer,more“significant”anniversaries wedisavowtheexperienceofliving withterroraftertheexperienceofan event.
AllthesurvivorsIhavespokenwith endureeveryday.Kevtoldmehe speakstohisson“everymorning withoutfail”.
Thisendurancemustbe acknowledgedandrecognised.
Thestoriesoftheirsurvivalcouldhave beenstoriesofvengeanceandhate andpromotingmoreviolence.
Instead,Ihaveoverwhelminglyfound thesestoriesareabouthopeand responsibility.
Nicktoldmehethinks“aboutbuilding anewfutureforthepeoplewhofeel oppressedanddisadvantagedsothat theymightbe[less]opento radicalisation”.
Thesearenotsaccharinestories aboutclosureorforgivenessor forgetting.Theyareaboutlivingwith andpromotinganawarenessofthe effectsthattheseattackshaveupon everydayindividuallives.
Lastingimpacts
EverypersonIhavetalkedwithisstill deeplyaffectedbytheirexperience.
Bali2002takesusfromtheweeks beforethebombingtothe2005death ofthebombmaker,Husin.Viewers withlittleconnectiontotheeventwill morethanlikelycomeawaywithoutan understandingofhowsurvivors,their familymembersandfirstresponders arestillimpactedtwodecadeson.
Aterrorismbombingisamoment whereoneismadepowerless.They aresubjecttothewilloftheterrorist.It issofaroutsidethenormaldaily experiencesitcancauseadeep identityshift.
Myresearchshowssurvivorsof terrorism,theirfamilymembersand firstrespondersmustfindawaytofold theexperienceintotheirongoinglives.
Sometimestheywalkthetightrope gracefullyandarewell-balanced,at othertimestheycan’tfindtheirfooting andareswayingdangerouslyoverthe abyss.
Ihopesomewillfindpeaceand healingintheairingofBali2002and thesharingofthesestories,butthis won’tbetrueforall.
