BASEBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

There’s no denying the amount of production and experience lost from the 2009 baseball team.

the final 21 games of the season. McQuail can also play shortstop and third base for the Griffs.

It can be seen in the record books from the batters box (five of the top eight in career hits) to the pitching mound (four of the top five in appearances). It can be seen in the numbers of victories (113) by the winningest class in program history. It can be seen in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft — Kevin Mahoney (23rd round, New York Yankees) and Kevin Mailloux (45th round, Seattle Mariners).

The Griffs will have a new left side of the infield with Sean Jamieson moving into the shortstop position, after spending two seasons at Niagara County Community College. Jamieson and NCCC advanced to the NJCAA College World Series for the first time in program history and Jamieson was a two-time NJCAA AllRegion III recipient. The Simcoe, Ontario native is expected to produce offensively and be solid defensively.

Despite all of those losses, one sign on how far the Canisius College baseball program has come under sixth-year coach Mike McRae is that after graduating the most productive class in program history, the Golden Griffins were picked third in the preseason MAAC Coaches’ Poll. That shows Canisius has brought its program to the level of not rebuilding, but reloading the program on a yearly basis, putting the Griffs in consistent contention for the program’s first-ever MAAC Championship. “We progressed well throughout the fall season and winter workouts,” McRae said. “I think we’re very good defensively and will be solid on the mound and in the battling lineup. “If there’s one concern, it’s just getting used to playing together and getting some collegiate game experience under the belt.”

“We have high hopes and expectations for Sean Jamieson,” McRae said. “He is a good all-around Junior Steve McQuail had a breakout 2009 shortstop who will hit campaign as a sophomore near the top of the order and be very good defensively.”

CATCHER The Griffs will use a tandem of sophomore Brad Medici and senior Paul Panik behind the plate. Medici came on strong at the end of his freshman season, starting 14 of the last 19 games on the season and a team-high 25 on the season. Medici ended the season on a five-game hitting streak and went 5-for-11 with four runs scored at the MAAC Championship.

At third base, Pettit will replace Mahoney, who started four years at the hot corner. Pettit is a transfer from Burlington County Community College and hit .413 with 54 runs scored, nine home runs, 54 RBI and a .668 slugging percentage.

Panik appeared in 25 of the last 33 games in 2009, appearing in 20 games for the third consecutive season. The Hopewell Junction, N.Y. native also posted an on-base percentage of .379, more than 100 points higher than his batting average.

Utility infielders Josh Lewyckyj, Mike Deuschle and Jon VanRemmen will provide McRae with options late in games and to provide starts throughout the season to rest the starters.

The other option for the Griffs behind the plate is freshman Frank Polino, who McRae said has shown the ability to play at this level, but just needs to make the transition to the speed of the college game.

OUTFIELD The Griffs have the potential for three seniors starting in the outfield with Ian Choy in left, Perry Silverman in center and Shayne Willson in right. Choy is a two-time all-MAAC First-Team selection and ranks third in program history in hits (173). The 2007 MAAC Rookie of the Year hit .359 overall and hit .451 over the final two and a half months. Choy’s power also increased with eight home runs after the first of April.

INFIELD After platooning during his first two seasons, junior Brian Burton will start the season as the Griffs’ primary first baseman. Burton made 35 starts in 2009, 30 of them at first base. The Kitchener, Ontario native was named to the all-Tournament Team at the MAAC Championship after going 8-for-16, including a three-RBI, game-winning double to force a decisive game. “With Brian, he just needs to do what he’s capable of and not try to do too much,” McRae said of the 2008 all-MAAC Second-Team selection. “If he can carry over his success from the end of last season, he’ll be fine for us this season.”

Silverman had the best season of his career as a junior, starting 34 games across the outfield. This year, Silverman will replace Branson Joseph, who was a four-year starter for the Griffs in centerfield. The Montreal, Quebec native posted career highs in eight offensive categories, with his .299 batting average 45 points higher than his previous best season.

Joining Burton at first base will be freshman Kevin Whitehead, as well as Drew Pettit, who has the versatility to play at either corner infield position.

Willson will start for the second consecutive season in right field and the hard-throwing righty will also be the Griffs’ closer. Willson hit a team-best .414 in MAAC games and was an all-MAAC Second-Team selection. The Surrey, British Columbia native had 27 multi-hit games and also had a walk-off hit in an elimination game at the MAAC Championship.

Junior Steve McQuail will start at second base for the Griffs. McQuail led the country in home runs during the summer with 16 and was named the No. 5 prospect in the Valley League by Baseball America. McQuail had a breakout sophomore campaign, earning all-MAAC Second-Team honors with 10 home runs, 45 RBIs and 42 runs scored while hitting .330 during

if he continues to show progress, can move into the left field spot and let Choy settle in at the designated hitter spot. Other options for the Griffs will be freshman Aaron Barley and Will Chomicki, who each provide tremendous speed off the bench.

SCHEDULE AND OUTLOOK Canisius will be tested in the non-conference schedule, starting right from the first weekend at the 2010 USA Baseball Complex Classic in Cary, N.C. The Griffs will take on Wright State on Friday and Sunday, sandwiched around a doubleheader against Illinois-Chicago. Wright State, who won the 2009 Horizon League, was selected as the preseason favorite in the conference, with Illinois-Chicago, who won the regular-season title in 2009 selected second.

STARTING PITCHING The rotation will be led by the duo of redshirt junior Shane Davis and senior Mike Goemans. Davis had an outstanding freshman campaign, earning numerous All-American honors. As a sophomore, Davis struggled with his earned run average, but continued to rack up the wins. The Belmont, Ontario native is the program’s all-time leader and has a 21-3 record in 26 career starts. Davis saved the best start of his season for the MAAC Championship, when he threw a complete game to pick up the 3-2 victory against Manhattan in an elimination game.

After a four-game series against Long Island at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, the home of the Kannapolis Intimidators, Canisius travels to Lipscomb, who finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference last season. The Griffs then take on Toledo and Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C., as Toledo advanced to the finals of the Mid-American Conference tournament and Winthrop advanced to the finals of the Big South Conference tournament last season. The Griffs conclude the early portion of their non-conference schedule at Dayton, who is the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10 after winning the regular-season title in 2009.

The other veteran in the Canisius rotation is Goemans, who earned allMAAC Second-Team honors in 2009. In eight MAAC starts, Goemans had a 5-3 record with a 3.35 ERA. The senior made two starts in the MAAC Championship, going in the opening game and then rebounding quickly to start the final game of the tournament. In the record books, the 6-foot-4 lefty is second in wins (21), tied for first in career starts (40) and is fifth in career ERA.

“I don’t think people are recognizing how challenging our non-conference schedule actually is,” McRae said. “There aren’t any national powers on the schedule, but a number of quality, Midwestern and Southern teams to prepare us for the MAAC.”

The third spot in the rotation, which is the final weekend spot in MAAC play, is currently being held by redshirt freshman Billy Martin, who McRae says has been “outstanding.” The fourth spot of the rotation is up for grabs between freshmen Jordan Cave and Kevin Whitehead. Those two will make weekend starts during the non-conference schedule but transition into mid-week starts once conference play begins.

The home opener is set for March 23, against Buffalo, as the Griffs will also host St. Bonaventure, Le Moyne and Bucknell. Canisius is set to travel to Buffalo, Youngstown State, Delaware, UMES, Le Moyne and St. Bonaventure.

McRae set a school record for wins with 26 in 2003 and topped the mark with 27 in 2004. His 2004 squad finished second in the league, while his 2003 team was third. He coached Josh McCurdy, the 2003 MAAC Player of the Year, and recruited James Avery, the 2003 MAAC Rookie of the Year. Both players went on to be selected in the MLB Draft. Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2009 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Kevin Mailloux was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 MLB Draft, while Female Athlete of the Year Natalia Tarasova won the solo event at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.
