VOLLEYBALL • SEASON PREVIEW
The storyline for the 2009 Canisius College volleyball team is almost too good to be true – winning the program’s first MAAC Championship on your home floor in the Koessler Athletic Center.
in 16 matches and also had at least five kills in 19 matches during the 2008 campaign.
But with that possibility comes a little bit of pressure – pressure the Golden Griffins recognize and embrace.
“Layne has embraced the position move and is going to be our starting right side, “ Hummel said. “She gives us the versatility of a quicker offense on the right side and a formidable block.”
Canisius starts the 2009 season at the La Salle Invitational on Friday, facing Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m., the first of four matches in the season-opening tournament in Philadelphia. It’s the start of what the Griffs hope is a march to a MAAC Championship in the Koessler Athletic Center on November 22-23. “Last year we learned what it takes to get to a MAAC Championship and what it’s like to be there,” ninth-year head coach Cathy Hummel said. “It’s exciting to host the MAAC Championship this year and there is a little bit of added pressure because you want to qualify to be there.”
Freshman Samantha Good will start as the secondary option middle hitter this season. The Rochester, N.Y. native was a three-time Team MVP and earned all-County First-Team honors on three separate occasions.
Canisius loses two starters (plus its libero) from a 2008 team that went 1711 overall, 12-6 in the MAAC and advanced to a four-team MAAC Championship for the first time since 1993. While the loss of three key players from last year’s squad is a concern, it’s not one that has Hummel too worried. “Our program is in the best state of affairs, player for player, since I’ve been here,” Hummel said. “My concern is the youth and inexperience. We are physically strong and talented, but have to keep our team emotionally in check because we have a young team.
“Sam is the most exploSophomore Layne Adams sive, fastest, athletic middle that we’ve seen in our program,” Hummel said. “We expect her to compliment Michelle with her style of play and continue our middle-focused offense.”
“It’s not too much of a concern, but if you wanted to create one, that would be it — getting through the length of a college season.”
Junior Jasmine Brennan will fill in along the front line. She has played in the middle the past two years and has been working to be an option on the right side as well.
MIDDLE HITTERS/RIGHT SIDE It’s not uncommon for a team to rely on its middle hitters, but it’s easy to look at the Griffs’ roster and personnel and know the middle of the court will get a lot of opportunities – opening up the rest of the court.
“Jasmine will be a role player, used on the right side and middle because of her ability to hit quick balls and be another strong right side block,” Hummel said.
“We’ve emphasized that for nine years and now we have a good compliment of players to help those middles,” Hummel said. “When our ball control and passing is good – the middles will have success and our other players will benefit as well.
OUTSIDE HITTERS The area where Canisius is hit the most by graduation is at the outside hitter position, with Morgan Ammons, Nicole Fafard and Brittany Gerde moving on from Canisius. The Griffs will have two main options on the outside in junior Renee Lettow and sophomore Danielle Brawn.
The leader of the middles is senior Michelle Godfrey, who has Hummel pointed out, could have a fairytale ending to her career. Godfrey came to Canisius as a walk-on and has developed into an all-league player, earning all-MAAC Second-Team honors as a junior in 2008.
Lettow played extremely well down the stretch when Ammons was suffering from an injury. The Lindenhurst, N.Y. native averaged 3.2 kills per set during the final 11 matches and raised her attack percentage by more than 40 points. She’ll be the number one option on the outside and has accepted that role.
Godfrey led the team and ranked sixth in the MAAC in attack percentage (.279) and blocks per set (1.05), ranking third in the conference. As the only four-year senior on the team, the 6-foot-3 North Tonawanda, N.Y. native has the chance to put a stamp on this year’s team. “This can be Michelle’s team. She’ll continue to show dominance above the net and we expect her offensive production and defensive production to be very good,” Hummel said. “She started as a walk-on, was all-conference last year and has the chance to have a great end to her career.”
“Renee is returning for her third year and having the experience from last season, she is driven to get to the conference championship and give her team a chance to win it at home,” Hummel said. “We expect nothing less from last year, see her being a leader as she will be playing all around the court.”
Sophomore Layne Adams served as the No. 2 middle hitter for the Griffs this year and is shifting over to the right side. The position move for Adams started in the spring as the depth among the front line for the Griffs allowed the coaching staff to move the 6-foot, Newtown, Pa. native.
Brawn also took on more of an active role late in the season, starting seven of the final nine matches in the 2008 season. She was one the team’s top servers throughout her entire freshman campaign and has benefited greatly from offseason training.
Adams averaged 0.72 blocks per game last year, posting at least three blocks
“Danielle came back stronger, more confident and playing at the highest

level we’ve seen. Last year her weakest aspect was physical, but now the game has slowed down for her,” Hummel said. “She was a strong server last year as a freshman. With offseason workouts and preseason, she is where she needs to be and that’s giving her confidence.”
better than she was last year,” Hummel said. “She will benefit the most from assistant coach Stephanie Jansma. “Our offense is more diverse and quicker than it has been. The confidence Janelle gained during her freshman year has carried over to this season.”
Freshman Emily Elek suffered an injury during the summer and will miss the entire 2009 season. Sophomore Joanna Burt is another option off the bench for the Griffs.
OUTLOOK Earning the second MAAC Coach of the Year award in her career last season (Hummel also won the award in 2003), Hummel has built this program to a consistent level in the MAAC, being recognized as a program in the top half of the conference.
“Joanna came back in stronger shape and her execution is getting better,” Hummel said. DEFENSE/SETTER The Griffs graduated one player from the back row in Sarah Podlesh, who served as the libero during the 2008 season.
“During my previous eight years, it’s been a long journey to get this program to the level where we wanted it,” Hummel said. “We’ve had success for the past three years and can legitimately be known as a topfour team in the MAAC.
Entering that role is freshman Allyson Severyn, who comes to Canisius after playing at St. Mary’s in Lancaster. The three-time allWestern New York First-Team selection won three state titles and has claimed the starting libero role during fall camp.
She’s joined on the sidelines by third-year assistant coach Randy Syracuse and first-year assistant Stephanie Jansma, who comes to Canisius after a four-year career at the University of North Carolina. Hummel also pointed out the significance of her athletic trainer, Melissa Donato, in being the “most important part of keeping our team healthy.”
“Ally is one of our most athletic players and has the chance to be one of the best defensive players we’ve had,” Hummel said. “She’s as skilled in passing as she is defensively. I’m confident and excited in her being our starting libero.”
Canisius will play on the road during the opening three weekends to develop a mentality away from home. The Griffs were 9-0 at home in conference matches last season and want to gain confidence early in the season.
Two other Griffs will rotate in the back row in senior Kaela Glenn and sophomore Carley Youngman. Glenn is in her second year at Canisius after two years at the University of Tampa and also serves as the team’s backup setter. She averaged 1.51 digs per set last year while Youngman averaged 1.77 digs per set.
“With a young team, the non-conference schedule will challenge us emotionally and physically. We’re on the road by design,” Hummel said. “We look to have a winning non-conference season, but mainly want to get confidence and prepare for a run at postseason.”
“Kaela is having her best campaign and we expect her to show senior leadership on and off the court. She will be a contributor on the back row,” Hummel said. “Carley is always one of our hardest workers. She will be given more of a role in depth on the court and will be relied upon as a defensive player in the rotation
Canisius will find out quickly how it stands against the upper-echelon of the MAAC as the Griffs host Iona (tied for No. 3 in the MAAC preseason poll with Canisius) and Fairfield (co-preseason No. 1) on the opening weekend of the conference schedule. The Griffs will play five of seven conference matches at home from Oct. 15 (against Niagara) to Nov. 1.
The fourth player in the Canisius back row is Emily Carpenter, who was a late addition to the program during the summer months. “Emily made a late decision to be a part of the Golden Griffin volleyball program. She’ll work in practice to push our defenders and right side players,” Hummel said.
Sophomore Carley Youngman
“The MAAC schedule played out as best we could – getting two of the top four teams at home on the first weekend,” Hummel said. “There are no easy wins in conference games and can be some tight losses. It’s important to take it one match at a time.”
While keeping that mentality of one match at a time, the Griffs know 14 conference wins can make a team breathe easy in hoping to qualify for the four-team MAAC Championship.
The Griffs’ starting setter is sophomore Janelle Davis, who set a program-record with four MAAC Rookie of the Week awards in 2008. She finished second in the Canisius record books for assists by a freshman (979) and is the only returning Golden Griffin to have played in all 113 sets last season.
A MAAC Championship the Griffs are hosting. “What better way to get your first conference championship than to win it at home,” Hummel said.
“After a successful freshman year as our starting setter, Janelle is more confident and more physical. During preseason she is exponentially

Notes from the 2008 Season REGULAR-SEASON RECAP
4 Canisius and Fairfield were the only schools in the conference to defeat each team in the MAAC in 2008. 4Canisius finished with a 9-0 record in MAAC home matches. 4 Canisius defeated Fairfield and Siena in the same season for the first time since 1992. 4 The Golden Griffins opened the 2008 season with three wins in the first three matches of the season for the first time in program history. 4 The 7-3 start by the Griffs was the best 10-match start in program history. The previous best start was 6-4, which happened in 2006 and 1997.
DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK
4 Canisius won three times during the 2008 season after losing the first two sets of the match. Prior to 2008, the Griffs had won a match when it trailed 2-0 four times in 19 seasons.
DOUBLE-DIGIT MAAC WINS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR
4 The Golden Griffins won 12 matches against MAAC opponents during the 2008 season for the third consecutive season. Canisius is one of three teams, along with Fairfield and Siena, to win at least 10 MAAC matches each of the past three seasons.
BACK TO THE MAAC TOURNAMENT
4 Canisius qualfied for the seventh time in program history and qualified for a four-team MAAC Championship for the first time since 1993. 4 Canisius was a part of MAAC Championship held at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in 2006, 2002 and 1998. 4 The Griffs would have qualified for a four-team MAAC Championship in 2006 by finishing in third place in the regular-season standings, but all 10 teams participated in the postseason in Walt Disney World.

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
2009 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Kevin Mailloux was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 MLB Draft, while Female Athlete of the Year Natalia Tarasova won the solo event at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.

Administration Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. President President of Canisius College since 1993, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. has transformed Canisius College from a commuter college serving primarily the Western New York market into a residential comprehensive university drawing students from across the Northeast and beyond. Under Father Cooke’s leadership, Canisius has invested nearly $142 million in 24 major capital projects on the Main street campus, including $85 million in eight major residence hall projects during this time. Plans to develop Science Hall, an interdisciplinary science center at the college, are underway. Educating students for the demands of an ever-changing world is a high priority for Father Cooke. New majors in emerging fields such as bioinformatics, international business, accounting information systems, health and human performance and digital media arts have recently been added to Canisius’ comprehensive curriculum. Canisius faculty, students and staff are heavily involved in a wide variety of service learning and volunteer activities throughout Western New York and beyond. Father Cooke received high marks in a Buffalo News poll of Western New York leaders which ranked Father Cooke as the second most influential civic leader and the college as the second most influential institution overall in terms of their positive impact on the community. Father Cooke was also recognized by The Buffalo News as one of its Outstanding Citizens for 2001 and named the 2003 Renaissance Man by the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF). He received the 2005 Humanitarian Award from the Niagara Lutheran Foundation, and the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC) of Western New York presented Father Cooke with a 2007 Citation Award for his community leadership. In early 2008, Father Cooke served as a delegate at the Jesuits’ General Congregation 35 that elected Father Adolfo Nicolas as the new General of the Society of Jesus. Father Cooke was also a delegate at General Congregation 33 in 1983 that elected Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach as General. Prior to joining the Canisius community, Father Cooke served as executive and academic vice president of John Carroll University. Born in New York and raised in Hoboken, NJ, Father Cooke received a bachelor of arts degree from Fordham University in 1960; a Licentiate in philosophy from Loyola Seminary, Shrub Oak, in 1961; master’s degrees in teaching and philosophy in 1962 and 1965; respectively, from Fordham; advanced theology degrees from Woodstock College in 1967 and Yale University in 1968; and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1971. Father Cooke’s academic area of expertise focuses on ethics, the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of language. Father Cooke is currently a member of the board of trustees of Fordham University, and a member of the finance committee of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.
Dr. Ellen Conley Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college. Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981). During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program. While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration. From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports. From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”
