VOLLEYBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

When advancing through life and realizing a change in priorities, the adage of “putting needs before wants” becomes more apparent and necessary.

between Davis and Palka has been good, with Hummel saying Davis has had her best camp in her three years at Canisius. Davis and Palka will play, whether it’s one setter on the court at all times or having two setters go through the rotation. Hummel isn’t married to a system and will see which system provides the most success.

The 2010 Canisius College volleyball team is “all on board with that.” The Golden Griffins return five starters and welcome five newcomers giving them not only a deep roster but a number of quality options as Canisius begins the 2010 season this weekend at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y.

“We have two very talented setters. Janelle has had her best preseason and is showing on the court the maturity she’s gained during her first two years,” Hummel said. “Sydney Palka has equal talent to Janelle. Her challenge is trying to catch up to the speed and intensity of the college game. Sydney also brings an extra fire that our team may have been lacking.”

“Our goal throughout the preseason camp was to mesh a brand new team and change the culture right from the beginning of preseason,” 10th-year coach Cathy Hummel said. “I feel it’s been our best camp in recent memory in terms of energy and enthusiasm, and our depth is better than it’s been.” The 14-player roster shows depth at all of the positions. With that depth, the coaching staff doesn’t need to have the same players out there for every match. The coaching staff can call on one player one day and another player on another day, enabling them to ride the players who are playing well.

LIBERO Sophomore Allyson Severyn jumped right into the libero position and only let go of it for two matches in 2009 – two matches where injuries forced Severyn to dress as an outside hitter. The Lancaster, N.Y. native had double-digit digs in 27 of 29 matches – all 27 matches where she played libero. Severyn finished 22nd in the country at 5.18 digs per set and ranked second nationally among all freshmen.

“Our depth has helped in raising the level of competition,” Hummel said. “There isn’t a tremendous amount of pressure so you can make a mistake and someone is there on the bench to pick you up.

She also led Canisius with a .949 service reception percentage – the highest percentage of any libero in program history. The 5.18 digs per set average also was the highest by any Canisius freshman.

“We won’t have to use the same starting lineup from the start of the season to the end of the season. It could be your day or it could not be your day. Now I feel confident, and so does our team, that we have a number of options to find ways to win.”

Backing up Severyn and playing in the back row will be freshman Lindsay Hanggi, who played on the 2009 New York Class AA state champions at Canandaigua High School. “Ally had a great freshman campaign. The expectation of her is to continue to get better. The points she will generate for us on passing will be critical to our success,” Hummel said. “Lindsay’s work ethic and energy on the court is awesome. It’s made our flow on the court better. She will be on the court in some capacity and will be in a constant competition with Ally to wear the other color jersey.”

That confidence has been built through fall camp, with each position group focusing on execution and tracking those production stats. Those numbers are the basis for making personnel moves in the rotation. It’s a way to keep the competitiveness in the gym and gives each player an opportunity to prove herself. “The best thing about this type of team is they are handling themselves by position,” Hummel said. “The middles are doing what they need to do, the outsides are doing what they have to do. It hasn’t mattered which one of our players has given us that production.

MIDDLE HITTER Throughout the past five years, the strength of the Canisius offense has come from its middle hitters, with all-league selections Leigh Launhardt, Mary Boller and Michelle Godfrey manning the middle. That strength continued last year with sophomore Samantha Good becoming the first Canisius freshman to be named all-MAAC in more than 10 years.

“The depth of our team gives us options and our girls have been receptive to that in putting the success of the team first. They’re putting what’s necessary to win in front of personal needs, personal wants and playing time. “Putting needs in front of wants. They’re all on board with that.”

Junior Danielle Brawn

Good, who earlier this week was the only sophomore among the seven preseason all-MAAC selections, led Canisius in kills per set (2.77) and was seventh in the MAAC, first among freshmen, with a 3.30 kills per set average in conference play last season.

SETTER Canisius has two main options at the setter position in junior Janelle Davis and freshman Sydney Palka. A two-year starter, Davis is the first player in program history to have 900-plus assists in each of her first two seasons. During those freshman and sophomore seasons, Davis hasn’t missed a set, making her the second-most experienced player on the roster, and has 40 matches of 30-plus assists in her career.

Junior Layne Adams will also start in the middle for the Griffs. The Newtown, Pa. native has played in 214 of a possible 220 sets in her career and started 21 matches in 2009, including the last 11 on the season. Adams has posted an attack percentage over .200 in each of her first two seasons and has 140 blocks in her career – including 30 matches of at least three blocks. Backing up Good and Adams will be freshman Roxanne Hernandez, a 6-foot-3 freshman from Medford, N.Y. Hernandez also will play at the right side position.

The addition of Palka, a freshman from Tonawanda, N.Y., gives the Griffs another option at the setter position while sophomore Emily Carpenter also has been working with the setters in preseason as well. The competition in camp

SEASON PREVIEW • VOLLEYBALL

“Our home tournament could be our toughest non-conference weekend in terms of opponents. Playing at home also adds some pressure because you want to win in front of your fans,” Hummel said. “Our goal each match is get better every time on the court, especially in our non conference.”

“We have high expectations for Sam Good. She’s more mature, more experienced and making fewer errors, which is what we expect in her second season,” Hummel said. “Layne and Roxanne are each going to get playing time. All three have pushed each other throughout the preseason. Layne will start but Roxanne is pushing her and can step in for us and be productive. OUTSIDE HITTER/RIGHT SIDE The most injury-plagued position for Canisius in 2009 has stayed healthy throughout preseason camp and is the area on the court where Canisius has a lot of quality options. Senior Renee Lettow is the most experienced player on the Griffs roster – having appeared in 311 career sets and entering the season ranked ninth all-time with 795 career kills. The Lindenhurst, N.Y. native set career highs in kills per set, digs per set and service reception percentage as a junior and had 10 double-doubles in 2009. Junior Danielle Brawn had 11 kills in the season opener last season, but suffered an ankle injury that kept her sidelined for three weeks. Upon returning, Brawn hit .381 in a three-set sweep of Iona and had 15 kills the next weekend at Saint Peter’s. The Brockport, N.Y. native wasn’t able to consistently gain that form throughout the season, but Hummel feels she’s learned from early-season success in 2009 and brought it to 2010.

The formula in the MAAC standings has traditionally been two top teams in the league and then a group of schools Junior Layne Adams fighting for the third and four spots in the conference standings. That formula appears to apply this year as defending champion Niagara returns its entire team from the 2009 MAAC champion and Fairfield is also traditionally strong.

“Danielle is playing her best volleyball that we’ve seen. She’s more confident, being a leader on the court and is comfortable in her role,” Hummel said. “Danielle is playing better than she was playing before her ankle injury last season.” Junior Joanna Burt made eight starts last season and had six kills with a .412 attack percentage in the win at Davidson. Joining the rotation on the outside is Emily Elek and freshman Jessica Warner, who played at St. Mary’s in Lancaster. Elek redshirted the 2009 season after suffering a knee injury in the summer before reporting to Canisius.

However, finishing in the top four isn’t as necessary as it is in most seasons with all 10 teams playing in the conference tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Despite all 10 teams playing in the postseason, the Griffs are staying in that mindset of finishing in the top four.

“Emily has returned from her knee injury and looks as good physically as she did prior to her injury,” Hummel said. “Jess Warner has a steadiness in her play, she hasn’t made tremendous mistakes. When someone’s having a bad day, she can come off the bench and give us production.”

“Our conference hasn’t changed much. There are the top two seeds and then everyone else fights,” Hummel said. “We’re going to treat this as a regular conference season and try to finish in the top four – that’s our goal every season, even with the Disney tournament format.”

One senior who has continued to develop throughout her time in the Blue and Gold is Jasmine Brennan, who will start the year on the right side. Brennan played in 10 matches last season, posting career highs with seven kills, four blocks and a .462 attack percentage at Saint Peter’s.

Canisius has a number of options throughout its roster, not relying on any one person at any one position. The question for the Griffs has never been in terms of talent but in terms of finding ways to win those close conference matches, which inevitably happen. That attitude can be the difference between finishing in the top half or bottom half of the conference.

“This is the best volleyball we’ve seen from Jasmine in four years, and she’s earned herself a starting spot. Jasmine is becoming the player we thought she could be,” Hummel said. “I’m happy for her in that she has worked hard and now is executing better. Jasmine also helps us in a team environment since her energy and love for the game makes us a better team.

Whether it’s in September on the first weekend of conference play or in November at the MAAC Championship, those close conference matches will make an appearance. The mindset of battling and doing whatever it takes to win, no matter who is on the court, has been built during fall camp.

SCHEDULE AND OUTLOOK Canisius has three weekends of non-conference play before the start of the MAAC schedule. The Griffs open the season with a tournament at Hofstra, then travel to Radford on Labor Day weekend. Canisius hosts a tournament during the second weekend of September when Canisius plays Colgate, Robert Morris and Bucknell.

“Our biggest area to improve is winning MAAC matches. We have the ability to win. Now we have to show it by winning and executing,” Hummel said. “With our depth and the way our team has bought in, I feel we have a good opportunity to develop throughout the season and be ready for the MAAC Championship in November.”

Hummel earned the second MAAC Coach of the Year award of her career following the 2008 season when she led the Golden Griffins to a 17-11 overall record and 12-6 record in the MAAC, qualifying for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1993. Canisius played in the semifinals of the MAAC Championship for the second time in three seasons. In the spring of 2010, the Golden Griffins received an NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program public recognition award for the third time in four seasons. The public recognition awards are presented to the best academically performing teams that rank in the top 10 percent within their sport in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Canisius Volleyball Under Hummel • Led Canisius to the best four-year stretch in program history during the last four years • 44 victories in the MAAC during the last four years — third-highest total in the conference • 2003 and 2008 MAAC Coach of the Year • Recognized in three of the past four seasons seasons with a Division I Academic Performance Program public recognition award — only team in the MAAC to win the award three times since 2007 • Totaled program-record 22 victories during the 2006 season • In 2006, guided team to first appearance in semifinals of MAAC Tournament since 1993 • Program has 35 MAAC All-Academic selections • Coached 11 all-league selections, two MAAC all-Tournament pick, seven preseason All-MAAC honorees and four Defensive Players of the Year

The Golden Griffins are the only MAAC volleyball team to receive the honor in 2009-10 and the only MAAC volleyball program to receive the award three times in the last four years. Canisius also received the award in 2006-07 and 2007-08. In 2006, Hummel helped lead the Griffs to a school record 22 wins, with 14 of those victories coming against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents. She also guided the Blue and Gold to the team’s first appearance in the MAAC Volleyball Championship semifinal round since 1993. Hummel became the second coach in program history to be honored as the MAAC’s Coach of the Year after the Blue and Gold posted a 16-13 record in 2003, the program’s first winning season in 10 years. Hummel has recruited a number of players to Canisius who have been honored by the league for their play on the floor and their work in the classroom, with 11 all-league selections, two MAAC All-Tournament picks, six preseason All-MAAC honorees, as well as four Defensive Players of the Year and a total of 35 MAAC All-Academic selections. Hummel was named the 10th head coach in program history March 29, 2001, after serving as an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo. Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2010 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year, while Female Athlete of the Year Sylvia Kowalski earned All-MAAC and ECAC All-Star accolades.

Battle of the Bridge
