he earned All-MAAC First-Team honors as a first baseman and also earned MAAC All-Tournament Team honors for the second consecutive season. Burton ranked second in the MAAC in RBI (68), third in home runs (17) and ninth in batting average (.373) while hitting .453 with nine home runs and 39 RBI in league play. “Brian should be a productive hitter in the middle of our batting order,” McRae said. “He does a good job communicating on the field. He has always been solid defensively and has gotten even better throughout his career.” The lone spot in the infield without a returning starter is at second base with the departure of McQuail. The 30th-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays became the first junior to be selected in the Major League Draft since 1994. McQuail had one of the best seasons in program history, hitting .397 with 20 home runs and 81 RBI en route to being named a Third-Team All-American. Freshman Jose Torralba will be the starter at second base. Torralba played with the Ontario Blue Jays, who won the AABC North Atlantic Regional Championship in 2010. Along with Torralba, freshman Ralph Alloco may see time at second and as a utility infielder. “Jose is a pretty advanced player for a freshman. He has a lot of good experience prior to coming to Canisius. He’s shows a lot of composure,” McRae said. One player who came into his own last season after entering the program with high accolades was shortstop Sean Jamieson. The Niagara County Community College transfer earned All-MAAC FirstTeam honors, hitting .371 with 66 runs scored and 52 RBI. Jamieson had a consecutive games streak of 21 games without an error, a long streak for a middle infielder. “Sean is the guy that needs to be the leader for this team this season,” McRae said. “It took some time for him to adjust to the Division I level, but once he bought in, he experienced a lot of success.” Replacing four-year starter Kevin Mahoney at third base was a big challenge for the Griffs, and that job went to Drew Pettit. The junior also improved throughout the 2010 season, reaching base in 15 of the final 17 games of the season and ending the year on an eight-game hitting streak. “Drew has made a vast improvement in his all-around game from where he was at this point last season,” McRae said. “He is far more confident and that has carried over to his offense and defense.” The designated hitter position appears to be a platoon situation heading into the season, deemed a “wide-open battle” by McRae. Sophomore Kevin Whitehead is the primary left-handed option with freshmen Shane Zimmer and Jimmy Luppens serving as the righthanded options. McRae looks to match up with the opposing pitcher and also ride the hot bat.
Team All-State selection in New Hampshire, Coppinger has the opportunity to man center field for a long time at the Demske Sports Complex. “We have high expectations that Ryan can be a dynamic player,” McRae said. “He might not be our leadoff hitter from day one as that can be a high-pressure spot. But I can see it happening throughout the season.” Another transfer from NCCC and former Golden Griffin Matt Clingersmith, Gruarin should receive the first opportunity to start in right field. Gruarin hit .330 with eight home runs last season and looks to take over for Willson. “Chris has a lot of tools, but it make take him some time to make the adjustment to Division I baseball,” McRae said. “He’ll need to battle through them and not give in to the frustrations.” The other three Griffs who will see time in the outfield are Zimmer, redshirt sophomore Jarred Flock, who hit .429 with runners in scoring position last year, and senior Nat Barone. SCHEDULE AND OUTLOOK The Golden Griffins will play a challenging non-conference schedule to get them ready for conference play. It starts for the second consecutive season with a neutral-site series at the USA Baseball Complex in North Carolina against Toledo and Creighton. Toledo was picked to finish second in the West Division in the Mid-American Conference after winning 34 games last season while Creighton was picked fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference after finishing second in the country in fielding percentage last season. The Golden Griffins will then play two series against teams from some of the top conferences in the country, playing at SEC member Tennessee and at ACC member Maryland. The Griffs travel to Dayton for the Flyer Classic to face the host Dayton Flyers as well as Wright State and Oakland. Dayton was picked third in the Atlantic 10 while Wright State is the preseason favorite in the Horizon League after winning the regular-season title last year. On its Spring Break trip, Canisius will play Big East member West Virginia as well as Morehead State and its second SEC opponent of the year in Kentucky. During its bye weekend in conference play, Canisius takes on George Washington. Scattered throughout the season are non-conference games against Buffalo, Le Moyne, Youngstown State and St. Bonaventure, including the home opener at the Demske Sports Complex against the Bonnies on Tuesday, March 29. “I feel this is our toughest non-conference schedule in years,” McRae said. “We are playing a lot of tough teams from outside our area and region. We can’t take any days off.” Canisius starts defense of its 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title at Iona College on March 26-27, before returning home to host Marist the following weekend. The Griffs will host Saint Peter’s before playing three straight series on the road — at Manhattan, Rider and Siena. Each of those three teams was picked to finish in the top half of the conference. The Griffs will wrap up the regular season with series against Fairfield and Niagara at the Demske Sports Complex, where Canisius has won 36 of its last 45 MAAC home games. If they can qualify for the postseason for the fifth consecutive season, the Griffs will be in search of their first postseason championship. The MAAC Championship returns to Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. after a one-year hiatus. Canisius has advanced to the championship round in each of the last two years, only to come up short against Marist in 2009 and Rider in 2010. “You hope it leaves a bitter taste in their mouths. If the memory is still there, you want your team to use it as the right motivation moving forward” McRae said. “As we’ve seen the past few years, once you get to the MAAC Championship, nobody knows what will happen as each of those four teams can get to the NCAA Tournament.”
OUTFIELD Canisius primarily has six outfielders to use this season, with the common theme throughout being speed. That will allow the Griffs to “cover a lot of ground,” especially with the combination of senior Will Chomicki, freshman Ryan Coppinger and sophomore Chris Gruarin. Chomicki was one of the team’s most improved players during the 2010 season. Primarily used as a pinch runner and late-inning defensive replacement during his freshman and sophomore seasons, Chomicki grabbed a hold of the left field spot in the later third of the season. The Poughkeepsie, N.Y. native made 36 starts, with the Griffs going 26-10 in his starts. The speedy outfielder had 13 steals and an on-base percentage of .438 – 146 points higher than his batting average. “The thing about Will Chomicki is that he competes,” McRae said. “He is a battler. As a coach, you want those guys on the field.” Coppinger looks to be the staring centerfielder for the Griffs. Last season, Silverman started in center and had a career year after the graduation of Joseph, who was a four-year starter for the Griffs. A three-time First-

Head Coach • Seventh Season 228-251 (.476) Overall 122-105 (.537) MAAC Mike McRae is in his seventh season as head coach of the Canisius College baseball program. McRae has led a total rebuilding project of the Golden Griffins, taking over a team that won four games in 2004 to three straight seasons of 35 wins or more. McRae has a record of 163-165 in his six seasons at Canisius, including a 116-56 (.674) record in the last three seasons and two MAAC regularseason titles. McRae, the three-time MAAC Coach of the Year, has led Canisius to the postseason in each of the last four seasons. The Golden Griffins won the program’s first postseason game in 2008, played in the title game of the 2009 MAAC Tournament and have advanced to the championship round of the MAAC Tournament in each of the last two seasons – the only two appearances in the championship round in program history.
Canisius Baseball Under McRae • Won 116 games the past three seasons — most wins by school located in the Northeast or Midwest • Had five players drafted during the past three seasons, including the first junior since 1994 • Coached John Axford in 2006, who went 8-2 with 24 saves for the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2010 season • 2010 and 2008 MAAC regular-season champions • Led Canisius to the postseason during the past four seasons • Program has won MAAC Player of the Year, MAAC Coach of the Year (twice), MAAC Rookie of the Year (twice) and MAAC Pitcher of the Year during the past three seasons • 2003, 2008, 2010 MAAC Coach of the Year • Won four Big 4 Baseball Classic title in six years, posting a 10-2 record • Assistant coaches have gone to work at Virginia Tech, Hartford and the Toronto Blue Jays
Canisius has had three players named All-Americans during the last three seasons – the only three All-Americans in program history. Steve McQuail was named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2010. Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
2010 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year, while Female Athlete of the Year Sylvia Kowalski earned All-MAAC and ECAC All-Star accolades.

He was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Notre Dame School of Law, where he earned a juris doctor degree in 1981. Prior to Canisius, Hurley practiced law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber. Kmiec to serve on the Fidelis Care New York Board of Directors, a health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State. He is also chair the Bishop’s Council on the Laity for Bishop Kmiec.
