MEN’S SOCCER • SEASON PREVIEW
“Overall, we are a pretty well-balanced team. We have some creative players in the midfield and up front. Our players have the ability to create scoring chances. We also have a solid back and our offense will start with them.” Leading the way for the Griffs in 2011 are team captains J.J. Hughes, Kareem Gray and Regan Steele. A very young Canisius team, Hughes is the lone senior on the roster, while Gray and Steele are both juniors. Therefore, the trio of captains will be relied upon to help the team be successful at the Division I level. “J.J., Regan and Kareem have been doing a great job of providing leadership early this season,” McGrane said. “Especially with how young our team is, we need those three to help lead the way for us in reaching our potential.”
Forwards One of the challenges for Canisius in 2011 in improving its scoring offense. Last season, the Griffs totaled only 12 goals in 17 games. The talent is there to improve but the key for McGrane is to find the right combination to maximize the output. “We are quite strong up front,” McGrane said. “We have a number of capable players but right now, we are just looking for the right combination of forwards.” Leading the charge up front are two returners in juniors Andrew Incho and Ian Buzzio. The duo has combined to start only three games in their collegiate careers during their first two seasons but given the opportunity as juniors, McGrane can see both taking advantage of their chances and contributing to the team’s success. “Andrew has made huge improvements over my brief time at Canisius,” McGrane said. “He is so athletic. His movement off ball is good and he will definitely factor into our success this season. Ian is a hard-working player. He is successful because of his effort.”
The lone senior on the roster, J.J. Hughes has recorded five points, two goals and one assist during his career, splitting time between the midfield and defense.
New to the Griffs this season on the front line is junior Gavin Falconer and freshmen Derek Maier and Asani Samuels. Each has a lot of career potential and are highly-regarded newcomers.
A new look can be seen throughout the Canisius College men’s soccer program in 2011. A new coaching staff has taken the reins of the program, philosophies and attitudes have changed and of the 27 student-athletes listed on the roster, 13 are looking for their first action as a Griff, including nine freshmen who are making their collegiate debuts.
“Gavin is a very intelligent player with a knack for scoring,” McGrane said. “Derek is quick and is very dangerous going toward goal, while Asani is a big, quick and athletic forward who can put the ball in the back of the net.”
Leading the new era in the Golden Griffin men’s soccer program is first-year head coach Dermot McGrane. No stranger to the MAAC, McGrane spent the last nine seasons turning Niagara University into one of the top programs in the league, while earning MAAC Coach of the Year honors on two occasions.
Midfield The midfield unit is the most experienced group on the 2011 roster, led by Hughes and the team’s top returning scorer in junior Sam Zarka. The two players will combine on the outside and be relied upon to get the ball forward.
McGrane knows that building a MAAC Championship contender doesn’t happen over night and Canisius will need to take steps to reach its ultimate goal.
“J.J is a great leader and will team with Sam Zarka as our two main threats on the outside,” McGrane said. “Sam is great on ball and is a very skillful player.” During the 2010 campaign, Zarka totaled two game-winning goals for the Griffs and added two assists. Hughes started eight games in the midfield and contributed a goal on the season.
“We want to see progress this season from last year,” McGrane said. “With the MAAC Tournament being at Disney this year, our first goal is to finish in the top six and get a bye into the quarterfinals. After that, we can start to focus on competing for a league title.”
Three newcomers join the roster and will all see time on the outside. Junior transfer Brandon Carnovale plus freshmen Pat Conlon and Andrea Conte will all see playing time in their first season and have a chance to contribute to the team’s success.
Beginning to mold the Griffs into a championship-level program, McGrane, along with assistant coaches Kevin Brenner and Kwame Oduro, is installing an attacking style of play for the Griffs in 2011.
“Our three newcomers on the outside all have good work ethic,” McGrane said. “They are solid technically and will definitely see playing time. We need depth in our midfield to keep our pace up.”
“We want to be a very attacking oriented team,” McGrane said. “We are trying to get players that can play in every situation – they can possess the ball, make the right decisions and play an entertaining style. We need to be more offensive in nature and get every player involved with our mindset. However, our style of play will adjust accordingly to our opponents and how our season is going.
Three players in junior Jared Ott and freshmen Jon Cary and Denver Spearman are set as the team’s center midfielders for the season after a solid start to the 2011 campaign.

SEASON PREVIEW • MEN’S SOCCER
Sam Zarka is the team’s top returning scorer, posting six points, two goals and two assists in 2010.
One of three team captains, Regan Steele moves from forward to defense in 2011.
Kareem Gray recorded three shutouts in 2010, the most for a Canisius goalie since 1996.
Goalkeeper
“Jared Ott, Jon Cary and Denver Spearman all stood out well in the preseason,” McGrane said. “They have a good work rate and good vision. That is exactly what we need and are looking for from our center midfielders.”
Anchoring the team’s last line of defense in 2011 is Gray, a junior stopper. In his first season with the Griffs, Gray posted a 1.52 goals against average and .753 save percentage, while becoming the first Canisius goalie to record three shutouts in MAAC play since 1996.
Rounding out the midfield unit and providing the Griffs with more depth is junior Paul Klopfer and sophomores Paul Dhaliwal, Justin Montero and Zack Schwartz.
“Kareem is a big and athletic goalkeeper,” McGrane said. “As a captain, we expect him to be an anchor for our defense. He is an excellent shot stopper.”
Defense
Challenging Gray for playing time will be sophomore Ryan Arvin and freshman Reiner Dollak.
With his high-paced style of attack and goal of moving forward, McGrane has made it clear that the scoring starts with the defense. Who better to lead the unit then than the offensive-minded Steele, who spent his first two seasons at Canisius as a forward?
“Ryan was given some time in the spring and he took advantage,” McGrane said. “He did a really good job for us when given the chance. Reiner has great size and has potential to be a very good shot stopper down the road.”
“Our attack starts with our back four,” McGrane said. “We have moved Regan back and think he’ll be a great asset as a defender. He is good in the air and reads the game well. He really attacks great from the outside back. He will team with sophomore Will Hudson on the outside, who also get forward tremendously.”
Schedule The Griffs kick off the 2011 season on Friday, August 26 with a road contest at Cal State Northridge. Canisius then plays at San Diego State and Syracuse before returning to the Demske Sports Complex for the team’s home opener against Delaware on Sept 10. The Griffs also host Robert Morris in nonconference action, while playing at St. Bonaventure, Buffalo, St. Francis (Pa.) and Cleveland State.
Steele contributed four points, one goal and two assists in 16 games as a sophomore in 2010, while Hudson appeared in all 17 games on defense with 14 starting assignments. Sophomore Robbie Ryan will partner with highly-regard newcomer Ryan Schroen as center backs for the 2011 campaign. Ryan started 11 games as a rookie last season, while Schroen joins the Griffs after being selected as one of only four defenders nationally to earn NSCAA High School All-America honors in 2010.
The quest for the 2011 MAAC Championship begins on Sept. 30, playing host to Siena. Canisius also welcomes Marist, Manhattan and 2010 champion Saint Peter’s to the Demske Sports Complex and plays at Fairfield, Iona, Loyola, Rider and Niagara during the conference season. All 10 teams make the trip to the 2011 MAAC Championship, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney Resorts. The tournament begins on Nov. 3 and culminates on Nov. 7 with the championship game.
“Ryan Schroen has been outstanding so far,” McGrane said. “He reads the game so well and is very composed on the ball. We have seen him form a great partnership with Robbie Ryan so far and expect good things from the two of them.” Adding depth to the defensive unit is junior Charles Crook, sophomore Philip Smithers and freshman A.C. LaFlore.

MEN’S SOCCER • HEAD COACH
Dermot McGrane First Season Elmira ‘94 One of the most successful head coaches in the MAAC, Dermot McGrane became the 14th coach of Canisius College men’s soccer program on Jan. 21, 2011. A twotime MAAC Coach of the Year, McGrane spent the last nine seasons turning Niagara University into one of the top programs in the league before taking the same position with the Golden Griffins. The winningest head coach in Purple Eagles history, McGrane took the Niagara program to new heights during his tenure. He inherited a team that won only 27 games in the 11 seasons prior to his arrival and then took the Purple Eagles to six MAAC Championship Tournament appearances, including the program’s first title game in 2009. Overall, McGrane led Niagara to 61 wins in his nine seasons, including 39 conference victories and seven seasons of at least a .500 winning percentage versus MAAC foes. His success with the Purple Eagles did not gone unnoticed by his peers. McGrane earned MAAC Coach of the Year accolades in back-to-back seasons following the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. His 2008 team also spent the entire season ranked in the top four of the North Atlantic Region and received votes in the national poll in numerous weeks. McGrane’s 2006 and 2008 teams also finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense. Under his leadership, McGrane guided a number of players to individual success. McGrane coached and recruited the 2005 MAAC Player of the Year, the 2008 MAAC Rookie of the Year, 15 regional All-Americans plus 25 all-conference student-athletes at Niagara. Performance away from the soccer pitch has been just as important during his tenure. His team posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher every season and McGrane mentored 53 MAAC All-Academic selections in addition to 10 NSCAA Scholar-Athletes. Prior to his time at Niagara, McGrane spent five seasons as the top assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University. With the Chanticleers, McGrane helped build the program into a perennial power. He recruited three players drafted into the MLS, including the third overall selection in 2003, and six All-Americans. Coastal Carolina captured three Big South Championships and one NCAA Tournament appearance during McGrane’s term. McGrane’s first collegiate coaching position was as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky from 1995 to 1997. He helped the Hilltoppers to their first Sun Belt Conference Championship in 1995. A native of Leicester, England, McGrane also held coaching positions on the Region III staff for the United States Olympic Development Program from 2000 to 2002 and as the head coach of South Carolina for the U.S. ODP from 1997 to 2002. McGrane played four seasons at Elmira College, earning NCAA All-North Region honors, the Elmira College Booster Club MVP and the school’s Male Athlete of the Year accolades. McGrane graduated from Elmira in 1994, receiving his bachelor’s degree in psychology. He also earned his master’s in recreation management from Western Kentucky in 1997.

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
2011 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Cory Conacher finished his career with 12 school records, including the program’s career points and goals standards. Maura Frauenhofer placed second at the 2010 MAAC Championship, the highest finish by a Griff since 1997.

He also served as secretary to the Canisius College Board of Trustees. President Hurley has played a significant leadership role in the college’s investment in the campus since 1994, which now totals more than $150 million. He was the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing program, which offers employees grants in the form of forgivable loans to assist them with the purchase of homes near the college’s central Buffalo campus. A native of Buffalo, President Hurley is a graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore; Canisius College (BA 1978 summa cum laude, English/history); and the University of Notre Dame Law School (JD 1981). He practiced law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber, where he concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency. Inducted as a Distinguished Alumnus of Canisius College in 2002, President Hurley is also a recipient of the college’s LaSalle Medal (1996), which is the highest honor conferred upon an alumnus for service to alma mater. St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute inducted him into its Signum Fidei Society (1998) and the University of Notre Dame presented President Hurley with its Exemplar Award (1997). In 1990, and again in 1997, President Hurley received the HOME’s (Housing Opportunities Made Equal) James Crawford and Director’s Awards for outstanding service to the cause of fair housing.
