WOMEN’S LAX • SEASON PREVIEW

Goaltending The centerpiece of the Griffs’ senior class is four-year starter and the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Allison Daley. The Peterborough, Ontario native has placed among the nation’s best during her career, peaking during her junior season when she placed fifth in the country with 10.5 saves per game and 10th with a .501 save percentage. As a senior, Daley will be relied upon even more as she is expected to lead a young defensive unit. “Allison is a key piece of the puzzle for us,” Teeter said. “She needs to be on the top her game this season as she might see more shots due to the youth of our defense. We know she is capable of stepping up her game to an even higher level and that is what we need her to do this season. She has the potential to make a name for herself on the national scene this year instead of just at the conference level.” Backing up Daley is second-year goaltender Gina Molfetta. In her first season with the Griffs, Molfetta posted a goals against average of 11.28 and a save percentage of .450, while registering a 1-1 record. “Gina has done a nice job elevating her game to the next level to push Allison in practice,” Teeter said. “She brings a different style as she is a tactical stopper for us and with continued growth, Gina will be a future starting goaltender for us.”

Defenders The challenge for the Griffs during the 2011 campaign will be on the defensive end as Canisius graduated three starters from last season. A talented but inexperienced group, the coaching staff is looking for the unit to progress throughout the season and mold into a back line that can compliment the strength of Canisius’ goaltending position.

The Class of 2011 has taken the Canisius College women’s program to new heights during their tenures. The Griffs have qualified for the MAAC Tournament in each of their three seasons and with another berth in 2011, the seniors will become the first class to qualify in each of their four seasons.

“Our defense is young but very talented,” Teeter said. “Under the direction of assistant coach Ashley Wood, they are all working extremely hard and had a great fall. They are grasping the systems well but just need that game experience to really reach the level that we need them to be at.” Anchoring the unit is two-time all-conference selection Jackie Loson. The senior captain collected 35 ground balls, 13 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers last season, while chipping in 16 points, nine goals and seven assists. With more of a focus on her defensive game, Teeter envisions Loson becoming a top defender in the conference.

The seniors have also helped the Griffs match their highest conference in each of the last two seasons – placing second – and during the 2010 campaign, Canisius won double-digit games for just the second time in the program’s history.

“Jackie is a team captain that will lead by example for us,” Teeter said. “She has all the capability to step up her game and be one of the top defenders in the MAAC. She is a midfielder that we moved to defense so she can concentrate more on that side of the ball and lead a young unit.”

The one thing missing from the classes’ resume is a MAAC Championship and the seniors are determined to complete their career on top. “Our seniors have accomplished a lot things and moved our program into the right direction,” said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. “The only thing that is missing is a MAAC Championship. They know it is missing and they’ll do anything to get it.

Adding some experience on the back line are seniors Kaitlyn Black and Kathleen DiPasquale. The two combined to appear in 30 games on defense last season, totaling five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

“Our team goals don’t change until you reach them. We want to get to our title game and we want to win the MAAC Championship.”

“Kaitlyn and Kathleen both provide much-needed senior leadership,” Teeter said. “Both will have more of an impact this season and will play a bigger role for us.”

If there was a season to finally win the title, 2011 would be the year with the senior leadership in place. The eight seniors place among the top 10 in school history in numerous categories and have totaled four allconference selections, including the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Along with the three seniors, four freshmen will see playing time this season on defense. Joining the Griffs this season are Kara Dintino, Gabby Kotas, Steph Schmalz and Taylor Smith. “Our four freshman are very talented and will be fighting for game experience,” Teeter said. “They have all been working hard in practice, which is making the decisions difficult for the coaching staff on who to start.”

“We have a very deep team this season with a lot of experience in a number of positions,” Teeter said. “Anytime you return a conference player of the year plus three all-conference selections at three different positions, it proves that the talent is there to win a MAAC Championship. With our strong leadership and if we limit our mistakes, I could see this being the season where we finally break through and reach our ultimate goal.”

Rounding out the defensive unit is senior Mary Butlak and junior Meagan Hurley. The two provide needed depth for the Griffs this season.

Attack

Megan Oosting netted 33 goals in a breakout season as sophomore, earning All-MAAC First Team honors.

“All four of these players logged valuable game experience for us in past years,” Teeter said. “They will be relied upon this season to play a solid defensive game and add some scoring on offense. The four players will have a larger role in our success this season.”

Despite losing the team’s leading scorer from last season, Canisius returns a lot of experience up front, led by three seniors in Carly Quinn, Taylor Gray and Brianne Laffey. Quinn, a team captain, is the team’s top returning scorer from last season, recording 45 points, 26 goals and 19 assists during her junior campaign.

The biggest addition for the Griffs this season is freshman Maria Kotas. The rookie joins the Griffs after a successful high school career and Teeter sees her making an immediate impact and competing for MAAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2011.

“Carly’s knowledge of the game and her leadership is very contagious,” Teeter said. “She had a great bounce-back season last year after missing 2009 due to injury. I believe that she is due for her breakout season this year and now is the time for her to make a move and become a dominant factor in the MAAC.”

“Our only addition to the midfield this season is Maria Kotas,” Teeter said. “She has the most raw talent as any player on our team. Maria had a tremendous fall and should be able to compete as one of the top midfielders in the MAAC this season.”

Gray recorded 37 points as a junior, scoring 16 goals and recording a teambest 21 assists. Laffey appeared in 14 games in 2010, posting nine points, two goals and seven assists. Junior Kristy Wilensky will round out the unit after totaling 13 points, eight goals and five assists during her sophomore campaign.

Schedule Seven home games and three contests against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams highlight the 2011 schedule. “This is one of our most challenging schedules that we have put together,” Teeter said. “The non-conference schedule will help us for our conference season and will better prepare us for reaching our goal of a MAAC Championship.”

“Taylor, Brianne and Kristy will be counted upon to increase their scoring and take some heat off other players,” Teeter said. “All three are capable of scoring goals and being very successful at this level.”

Midfield

Canisius opens the season on Feb. 22, playing at No. 11 Vanderbilt. The Griffs then remain on the road for non-conference games against Detroit, Stanford, Ohio State and Binghamton.

One unit that remains largely unchanged from last season and boasts a lot of experience is the team’s midfield, returning five players that saw significant action last season. The anchor of the unit is junior Megan Oosting, who earned first-team All-MAAC accolades last season. She finished second on the team in 2010 with 33 goals, 40 ground balls, 25 draw controls and 25 caused turnovers.

The team’s home opener is scheduled for March 12 against Longwood. The Griffs also play non-conference games at the Demske Sports Complex against Connecticut, Duquesne and Albany, while playing at Robert Morris and St. Bonaventure.

“Megan is one of the top midfielders in the MAAC,” Teeter said. “We will count on her to increase her scoring and her role to fill the void left by graduation in the attack. She only got better as the season progressed last year and are looking forward to her continued success this season.”

The Griffs open MAAC play at home against Manhattan on April 1. Canisius also hosts Iona and Siena, while playing at defending champion Marist, Fairfield and Niagara. The top four teams in the MAAC regular season qualify for the 2011 MAAC Championship, held on the campus of Iona College. The semifinals take place on April 29 with the championship game slated for May 1.

Adding to the depth in the midfield are experienced players in juniors Rachel Brand and Theresa Walton plus sophomores Kate Gosson and Lindsey Morgan.

WOMEN’S LAX • COACH TEETER

Scott Teeter Ninth Season Canisius ‘02, ‘04 The longest tenured head coach in the MAAC, Scott Teeter is in his ninth season leading the Canisius College women’s lacrosse team. Teeter has won 54 games since taking the reins of the Golden Griffin program, the second-most wins by a MAAC coach during that period. In December 2009, Teeter added coaching responsibilities as the Canadian Under-19 National Team Head Coach and will guide his native country at the 2011 World Championship in Hannover, Germany. At Canisius, Teeter has taken a team that only won 11 games and two conference matches before his arrival to new heights. In the last six seasons, the Griffs have won 53 games – no conference coach has won more matches – and reached the MAAC Tournament in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010, including a trip to the championship in 2006. The 2005 MAAC Coach of the Year has built the program through recruiting and a strong leadership. Teeter has recruited and coached two players who competed in the most recent Women’s Lacrosse World Cup. He has also mentored 27 players to earn All-MAAC accolades, including a school-record seven selections in both 2009 and 2010. Teeter has also guided four Griffs to Player of the Year accolades. Allison Daley was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year last season, joining Elise Crawford and Alana Chan in 2004 and 2005, respectively, as Griffs to earn the accolade. In addition, Whitney Card picked up MAAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2006. Teeter was named the league’s Coach of the Year in just his third season after leading the Griffs to an eight-win improvement in 2005. He followed that year up with a school-record 12 wins, including six against MAAC foes, en route to the MAAC Championship. After a one-year absence from the MAAC Championship, Teeter led the Griffs back to the tournament in 2008. Four Griffs were selected to the All-MAAC First Team that season, the most of any school in the conference. In each of the last two seasons, Canisius matched its best regular-season finish by placing second in the conference standings. The Griffs also recorded 10 wins in 2010, marking the second time in the program’s history where Canisius registered double-digit victories. Before coming to Canisius, Teeter served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Buffalo State College in 2002, where he helped guide the program to its best finish ever at 5-6. Prior to his work at Buffalo State, he served as a student-assistant coach and team manager for the Canisius women’s lacrosse team for four years. He helped with instruction during practices and also assisted with game-day operations. Teeter was a four-year letterwinner for the Canisius College ice hockey team, graduating from the school in 2002. He played field lacrosse for his high school in Shelburne, Ontario, while also playing box lacrosse for the Orangeville Northmen in Western Ontario. Teeter graduated from Canisius with a degree in physical education in 2002 and earned his master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sport psychology and coaching from Canisius in 2004. Teeter and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Lake View.

seventh with 157 career points, third with 111 caused turnovers and eighth with 96 draw controls. The 2009 Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year and second-team regional AllAmerican, Wood set career highs with 56 points, 54 goals, 34 draw controls, 29 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls during her senior season. She led the conference with 1.71 caused turnovers per game and finished second with 3.18 goals per game.

In her first year on the sidelines, Wood mentored three student-athletes to AllMAAC accolades on the defense. In addition, junior Allison Daley became the third Griff to earn MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Wood also participated in the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament as a defender, becoming one of 64 players to advance to the second round of tryouts.

Wood arrived at Canisius after a successful playing career at Duquesne University, where she earned All-Atlantic 10 honors on two occasions. She graduated ranked fourth in the school’s record book with 139 career goals,

Wood graduated from Duquesne with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is pursuing her master’s in sport administration at Canisius.

Andy Smith Athletic Trainer • 15th Season • Canisius ‘89 Andy Smith, a 1989 graduate of Canisius College, serves as the school’s head athletic trainer. Smith returned to Canisius in August 1996 after spending six years as an assistant athletic trainer at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He also spent one year as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Illinois, where he received a master’s degree in kinesiology/ athletic training in 1990.

trainer at the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. He worked the 1999 Summer World University Games in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and helped coordinate athletic training services at the 2004 and 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds in Buffalo. Smith has served in numerous capacities within the New York State Athletic Trainers Association (NYSATA), including treasurer, regional representative, webmaster and president from 2002-04, where he represented nearly 1,300 certified and student athletic trainers statewide. He was honored by the NYSATA with the Thomas J. Sheehan Sr., Award for outstanding service to the profession. He recently served as a member of the NATA’s Inter-Association Task Force on “Recommended Guidelines on How to Prepare for and Manage Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) During High School and College Athletic Practices and Competitions,” which has been published in numerous journals.

As the head athletic trainer at Canisius, Smith oversees coverage for all 16 Canisius teams, working directly with the cross country and women’s lacrosse programs. He also administers and oversees the student-athlete accident insurance and NCAA and Canisius College Drug Testing programs. The western New York native also serves as an adjunct professor for athletic training curriculums through the Joint Review Committee on Athletic Training. His certifications include BOC Certification, Clinical Instructor Educator and National Safety Council Instructor of CPR, First Aid and AED.

Smith has recently been appointed to the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports. This committee provides expertise and leadership to the NCAA in order to promote a healthy and safe environment for the nearly 400,000 student-athletes within the NCAA through research, education, collaboration and policy development.

Smith has offered a variety of regional and national presentations on several topics in sports medicine. He has also been involved with the United States Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Team and was a volunteer athletic

Smith lives in Eggertsville, N.Y., with his wife, Carol, and their children, Grant and Ava.

Jon Rowan Strength & Conditioning Coach • Third Season • West Virginia Wesleyan ‘94 Jon Rowan enters his third year as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Canisius College athletic department, joining the Golden Griffins in September 2008.

student staff and also assisted with the development for the school’s weight room and strength and conditioning equipment. Rowan has served as a consultant for player performance for the Albany Conquest, an arena football team that competes in the AFL2. In addition to his strength and conditioning duties at RPI, Rowan spent five seasons as a defensive backs coach for the school’s football program. He was also an assistant football coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C., and at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va.

Rowan came to Canisius after serving as the head strength and conditioning coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the past 10 years. At RPI, he was responsible for designing, teaching and implementing year-long training and conditioning for the Engineers’ 23 varsity sports programs while also working with various faculty, staff and students. He was the supervisor and fitness educator for a 30-person

Golden Griffin Lacrosse Highlights Under Head Coach Scott Teeter • Won 53 games in the last six years after totaling only 11 victories in the first seven seasons of the program. No coach in the MAAC has won more games in the last six seasons than Teeter. • Earned the first four trips to the MAAC Tournament in the program’s history, including three-straight invitations from 2008 to 2010. • 27 Players have earned All-MAAC accolades, including a school-record seven selections the last two seasons. • Four student-athletes have been honored with Player of the Year honors. Elise Crawford, Alana Chan and Allison Daley earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades in 2004, 2005 and 2010, while Whitney Card was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2006. • After playing at Canisius, two former players participated in the most recent Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.

A comprehensive program on life skills provides student-athletes with educational experiences. Service programs preparing students for the demands of a well-balanced lifestyle are also provided. Academic Services for Student-Athletes offers the guidance and direction needed to prepare student-athletes for success beyond graduation.

Academic Advisor for Athletics Services The Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius: • Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility. • Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study. • Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress. • Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans. • Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course instructors. • Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial Program In order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.   Study hall is to be used for course work only.  A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Tradition of Excellence 2009-10 Canisius Athletics Highlights • Natalia Tarasova of the synchronized swimming team won her second-straight national championship in the solo event. As a team, Canisius finished third at U.S. Collegiate National Championship. • Carl Hudson of the Canisius hockey team became the first player in the program’s history to sign a contract with an NHL team, joining the Florida Panthers. • Steve McQuail of the baseball team became the fifth Griff in the last three years to be drafted by a MLB team. McQuail was selected in the 30th round by Toronto. • Head coach Randy Mearns and former Griffs Angus Dineley ‘07 and Matt Vinc ’05 helped Canada to a silver medal at Men’s Lacrosse World Championship. • A total of 31 Canisius student-athletes were named to the all-conference team. In addition, Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year and Allison Daley earned MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year honors. • Ian Choy of the baseball team and Michelle Fridey of the softball team were both named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. Choy became the first Griff since 2000 to earn first-team honors.

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

Administration John J. Hurley President John J. Hurley was appointed the 24th president of Canisius College on Monday, October 19, 2009 by the college’s Board of Trustees and assumed the position on July 1, 2010. He is the first lay president in Canisius College’s 140-year history. A 1978 alumnus of Canisius College, Hurley has served as executive vice president of Canisius College since 2007 and vice president for college relations since 1997. In these roles, Hurley is the designated senior administrative official, responsible for the college’s strategic planning, integrated marketing, legal and compliance issues and athletics marketing. He also oversees the college’s advancement operation, which includes development, public relations, creative and Web services, alumni relations and government relations. Hurley currently directs all phases of the college’s current campaign, A Legacy of Leadership, which has a $90 million goal. He also led the college to the successful conclusion of its Imagine Canisius fund-raising campaign (1997 – 2000), which surpassed its $30 million goal by $8.8 million. The Imagine Canisius capital campaign was the most successful fund-raising effort undertaken by Canisius College and was recognized in 2001 as the top fund-raising accomplishment among the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Hurley played a significant leadership role in the college’s $142 million capital investment in the campus, and negotiated the college’s acquisition of the HealthNow building on Main Street. Plans are underway to convert the building into a comprehensive state-of-the-art interdisciplinary science center at Canisius. Hurley is the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing program, which offers incentives to Canisius employees who purchase homes in neighborhoods surrounding the college. He also led the branding initiative that developed the college’s positioning statement Canisius College: Where Leaders are Made. A native of Buffalo, Hurley graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore and earned a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, in English and history from Canisius College. He was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Notre Dame School of Law, where he earned a juris doctor degree in 1981. Prior to Canisius, Hurley practiced law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber. He concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency, creditors’ rights and acquisitions of troubled companies. Hurley was appointed by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec to serve on the Fidelis Care New York Board of Directors, a health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State. He is also chair the Bishop’s Council on the Laity for Bishop Kmiec. Hurley is a past member of the city of Buffalo’s Charter Revision Commission and past president of the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Board of Trustees. He is the recipient of the 2002 Canisius College Distinguished Alumnus Award, which recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers. Hurley is also a recipient of the college’s LaSalle Medal (1996), the highest honor conferred upon an alumna/us for service to alma mater, and was inducted into the Signum Fidei Society of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute (1998). Hurley is the son of Doris Y. and the late Paul B. Hurley. He is married to Maureen O’Connell Hurley, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Rich Products Corporation in Buffalo. They have three children: Caroline, Brian and Millie.

Dr. Ellen Conley Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college. Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981). During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program. While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration. From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports. From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”

Bill Maher Director of Athletics Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his sixth year back in the Blue and Gold. Since taking over at Canisius, Golden Griffin athletic teams have won 21 conference or regional championships, with the softball team advancing to the NCAA Tournament three of the past four seasons and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 11 times in the last 16 seasons. The baseball program has won two of the last three MAAC regular-season titles and has the most wins (116) of any program in the Northeast and Midwest during the past three seasons. The synchronized swimming program won its 13th consecutive ECAC Championship in 2010 and also finished third at the U.S. Collegiate Championships for the third consecutive season. The women’s soccer team set a program record with 13 victories in 2009 and has played in two consecutive MAAC semifinals for the first time in program history. The 2008 team also won a program-record six MAAC games and advanced to a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1994. The 2008-09 women’s basketball team set the program’s Division I record with 24 wins and advanced to the Women’s NIT for the first time in program history.

The 2008 men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and won a share of the regular-season MAAC Championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2006 volleyball team set a program record for victories, the 2008 team qualified for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1994 and during the past four seasons has had the most wins during any four-year stretch in program history. The hockey program has improved its record in the Atlantic Hockey standings during each of the past four seasons. The men’s swimming and diving team defeated Niagara in a dual meet in 2010 for the first time in more than 10 years while the women’s team defeated its rival at the 2009 MAAC Championships. The Class of 2009 was the winningest class in program history for the men’s soccer program. The women’s lacrosse program has qualified for the postseason four times in the last five years after never making the MAAC Tournament before the 2006 season. The men’s basketball program has improved its record during each of the last three seasons, winning 15 games in 2009-10 - the most in a decade. The current senior class earned its undergraduate degrees by the end of its junior season. The cross country teams have each won four consecutive Little Three Championships. The golf team has finished fifth at the MAAC Championships each of the past two seasons with Drew Creighton tying for first place at the 2009 MAAC Championship. During the past five seasons, 22 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards. On the academic level, Canisius has had 16 studentathletes recognized on the district level as ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA All-Academic, including two Academic All-Americans in 2010. Canisius has claimed the Battle of the Bridge and won the Canal Cup in two of the last three seasons, which is an all-sports competition with rival Niagara University. Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in 2008 while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 million facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards. New offices for coaches along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010. Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences. A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05. During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which generated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events. He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season. Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994. He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services. Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.

Traci Murphy is in her sixth year as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman’s Administrator for the Golden Griffins. Murphy joined the Canisius staff after spending seven seasons at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Murphy is responsible for all NCAA rules enforcement of Canisius’ 16 Division I athletic programs in addition to all areas of student-athlete welfare. She supervises compliance, academic counseling, strength and conditioning and athletic training. She also oversees the Life Skills program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Murphy is the sport supervisor for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, women’s cross country, men’s cross country and softball. She serves on MAAC committees for Athletic Administration, Finance, Gender and Minority Issues, Women’s Basketball and chairs the MAAC Swimming and Diving Committee. She also organizes the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found the WNY Girls in Sports Program. The program, in collaboration with the City of Buffalo Public Schools, area colleges and universities, the Buffalo Bills, focuses specifically on young girls (ages 9-12) and their involvement in sports. Murphy began her career in 1992 as associate head athletic trainer at St Mary’s and moved to ULM in 1998. She added the responsibility of senior woman administrator in 2001 which involved the monitoring of women’s sports and mentoring the SAAC. In July 2003, she was promoted to the position of director of academics, compliance and student-athlete services. Murphy worked to develop and implement an enhanced academic development and compliance program for ULM’s student-athletes and the athletics department. Prior to ULM, Murphy served five years as the head athletic trainer at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. In 1992, Murphy earned a master’s degree in health education from the University of Arkansas. The Maryland native and her husband, Pat, a vice-principal at Amherst Central High School, have two children, Sean (9) and Sarah (5).

John Maddock is in his 30th year with Canisius College athletics and his 14th as associate athletic director for external affairs. Originally hired as the Golden Griffins’ sports information director, the native of Washington, Ill., was named an assistant athletic director prior to the 1987-88 season and moved into his current position in 1997. Maddock is responsible for corporate partnerships, marketing, promotions and merchandise sales, licensing, special fund-raising events and over sees the operations of the ticket office. Maddock is the sport supervisor for hockey, baseball, swimming and diving and synchronized swimming. The 55-year-old Maddock oversaw the operation of the department of athletics during Spring 2005 before Bill Maher was named the director of athletics. Maddock also assisted the MAAC with plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration during the 2005-06 athletic season. He chaired the search committee for the Griffs’ head football coach in 2000 and men’s soccer coach in 1998. He serves on the Hall of Fame and the MLK Awards Selection Committees and oversaw the development of the athletic department’s current logo. He was also instrumental in planning the season-long 100-year anniversary celebration for men’s basketball in 2003-04. Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981 after spending two-and-a-half years as the administrative assistant to the athletic director at Brockport State College. Prior to his job at Brockport, he was the ticket manager for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A farm club in Richmond, Va. A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1978. In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and the former chair of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Committee on Committees. He also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee and is on the Board of Directors for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and is a member of the MAAC Baseball Committee. Maddock spent two seasons as the public relations director for the North Atlantic Conference and served as the host for the 1990 ECAC-SIDA conference at the Buffalo Hilton. He chaired the Baseball Committee for the 1993 World University Games and was the assistant media coordinator for the 2000 NCAA Division I men’s basketball opening round games played at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena. Maddock was honored in 1998 by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T. Marsh Award for contributions, dedication and excellence in the field of collegiate sports information. John and his wife, Priscilla, reside in Snyder with their daughters Mackenzie and Mikaela.
