BASEBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

There are a lot of new faces on the 2012 edition of the Canisius College baseball team – 17 to be exact. Despite the loss of three Major League draft picks, along with five other seniors, the expectations for the Golden Griffins are the same they have been in recent memory. Having 142 wins in the past four seasons will keep those expectations high on an annual basis. “Our goal is the same as it has been for the past few years – make the MAAC Tournament and give ourselves a shot to win the program’s first MAAC Championship,” eighth-year coach Mike McRae said. “We know that any one of those four teams in the postseason can get to the NCAA Tournament, and our goal is to be one of those four teams at the end of May.”

cially in the four-game series,” McRae said. “We will rely heavily on Brooklyn’s age and experience. On the flip side, Mike has shown a lot throughout the fall and in preseason camp. The amount that Mike plays will relate a lot to his ability to get comfortable at the Division I level.” At first base, the Griffs have to replace four-year starter Brian Burton who appeared in more than 200 games at Canisius. McRae has a couple of options at first base in freshman Connor Panas and junior Chris Gruarin. Freshman Sam Cumbo is also an option at first base, with Cumbo learning the position as the production of his bat is pushing the coaches to get him in the lineup. “First base is one of our unanswered questions at this point. We have used a lot of guys there,” McRae said. “Connor is probably our first option, but you could see Chris Gruarin getting some time. Sam has been worked into the mix there because he has swung the bat well.”

One factor that no one knows how it will affect the 2012 season – especially the early portions of the season – is the mild winter affecting the Western New York area. The Golden Griffins have been able to hold a number of their team practices on their home field at the Demske Sports Complex. The combination of the low snow total and Field Turf allowed the Griffs to play a number of intra-squad scrimmages and work on things a team can only work on outside on a baseball field and not inside on a wood basketball court.

Up the middle, the Griffs have to replace MAAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year Sean Jamieson, who was drafted in the 17th round by the Oakland Athletics. Canisius has three players vying for two spots in sophomores Jose Torralba and Ronnie Bernick along with junior transfer Manny Hernandez. Torralba, a preseason all-MAAC selection, continued to improve throughout his freshman season and earned All-Tournament Team honors at the MAAC Championship after starting 52 games as a freshman. He probably will get most of the time at second base.

“The mild winter has given us far more opportunities to work on ingame situations,” McRae said. “We have been able to take advantage of defensive preparation. I’m hoping we made some of those earlyseason mistakes last weekend in a scrimmage instead of on the first weekend.”

Bernick only made five starts as a freshman and has worked his way into the discussion for a starting spot. Hernandez, the first player in program history from Venezuela, spent the last two years at Genessee Community College and was a two-time all-conference selection.

That first weekend starts on Friday, the first of four games at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. It’s the beginning of a “challenging” nonconference schedule that features Duke, Kentucky and Penn State as well as some good mid-major programs, including Horizon League favorite Wright State.

“We have three terrific defenders in Jose, Ronnie and Manny. “Jose has continued to develop and emerged as one of our better players in the offseason,” McRae said. “Whoever can continue to play good defense and contribute offensively will get more opportunities. “

McRae has always wanted a deep pitching staff, and he is encouraged by what he has seen through the offseason on the mound. The position player personnel appears to have more speed than in previous years. That gives the Griffs a chance to be better in the field and also get the legs going on the base paths. “We have some depth on the mound, which always is a plus,” McRae said. “We could be a very good defensive unit. If our pitchers can throw strikes, that makes for a good combination.” POSITION PLAYERS Canisius has a new combination behind the plate with junior transfer Brooklyn Foster and freshman Mike Booth. Foster comes to Canisius after two seasons at Cochise College. Foster was a 43rd-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. Booth hails from Lakeshore, Ontario, earning All-Star status in the Premier Baseball League of Ontario. “We will try and split time early in the year between Brooklyn and Mike, espe-

The most settled position on the infield is at third base in senior Drew Pettit. The third-year starter also earned preseason All-MAAC honors earlier this month after a 2011 season where he earned Capital One Academic AllAmerica First-Team honors. Pettit hit .425 with runners in scoring position and led the MAAC with a .423 batting average in conference play. Panas could also play third base along with freshman Jesse Puscheck. “Drew is one of the mainstays in our infield. “There aren’t enough superlatives to describe how far he has come,” McRae said.” His confidence, comfort level and understanding of what we want to do both offensively and defensively continue to increase.” At designated hitter, sophomore Shane Zimmer has emerged as the leading candidate. Zimmer went 10-for-24 with six runs scored, two home runs and four RBI in the final 10 games of the season. He had a “great fall camp” at the plate., according to McRae. Cumbo and Puscheck could also work into the lineup at the DH spot.

SEASON PREVIEW • BASEBALL

freshmen in Devon Stewart and Rohn Pierce. Stewart played for the Langley Blaze the past two years and went 4-0 in six starts with a 1.31 ERA. Pierce, who earned Western New York Pitcher of the Year honors in 2011, was 7-0 with a 0.40 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched last year.

One word to describe the outfield will be speed. If he isn’t moved to first base, Gruarin will be the starter in right field. The junior had eight assists last year, which ranked in the top 25 nationally, and appeared in 57 games. Along with Gruarin, freshman Mike Krische has emerged as the frontrunner in center field. Krische, who should start as the team’s leadoff batter, has the most speed of all the outfielders and can cover the deep center field in the Demske Sports Complex. Sophomore transfer Jesse Kelso will be the starter in left field. Kelso hit .442 last year at Niagara County Community College and earned NJCAA AllRegion First-Team honors.

“Devon and Rohn will get some opportunities early in the season, especially with the four-game weekends,” McRae said. “They have terrific stuff and have been working pretty hard to give themselves a legitimate shot at making the weekend rotation.” The depth of the Canisius pitching staff shows up past that starting rotation. Senior Alex Tufts figures to be “the swing guy,” especially during the non-conference schedule. He has an arm that can go throw a number of innings and will be relied upon out of the pen but also as an option for a spot start. Tufts went 4-4 with a 3.20 ERA in nine starts as a junior. Junior Scott Whitehead also is an option for longer relief opportunities or spot starts after making five starts in 2011.

Two other players expected to push for time in the outfield are sophomore Ryan Coppinger and junior Christian Segar. Coppinger made 51 starts as a freshman, hitting .311 in the month of May. Segar, a transfer from Jefferson State Community College, was a 49th-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2009 MLB Draft. “We have a lot of good options in the outfield, with those players being able to cover a lot of ground,” McRae said. “Jesse, Mike Krische and Chris Gruarin appear to be our starting outfield for the beginning of the season, but Ryan and Christian Segar will see time depending on matchups. They can certainly win a job if they get it going offensively.”

Two similar-style pitchers are senior Tim Seil and junior transfer Jason Rubenstein. Seil filled every role on the pitching staff last season – starter, relief and closer – and found success in all of them. His most impressive performance came in the final game of the season when Seil threw six innings of scoreless relief the MAAC Championship against Siena. Seil and Rubenstein “throw strikes with pretty good movement,” according to McRae.

Pitching Staff One name Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents will not be disappointed to see gone from the Canisius pitching rotation is Shane Davis, who won a program-record 35 games in his four years on the mound. Early in the season, Canisius will feature redshirt junior Billy Martin and sophomore Garrett Cortright at the front of the rotation. Martin made eight starts in the No. 1 weekend spot of the rotation last year and is 8-3 with two saves in his last 21 appearances, including a scoreless ninth inning to record a save in a 4-3 elimination-game win over Rider in the MAAC Tournament. Cortright started his career very impressively by allowing just five hits in 7.2 innings in a win against Creighton in his collegiate debut. The Hamburg, N.Y. native also earned MAAC All-Tournament Team honors after allowing three runs on six hits in 7.1 innings in an elimination game win over Rider.

Two lefties who will be “relied upon heavily” are redshirt junior Nathan Linseman and freshman Eric Stolzenburg. Linseman had his best season in 2011, finally looking comfortable after seeing his 2009 season cut short with an injury. The Guelph, Ontario native had a 3.05 ERA in his final 13 appearances, stranding 17 of the 25 runners he inherited. Stolzenburg was an ECIC Division II FirstTeam selection in 2010 out of Williamsville East high school where he had 15 pickoffs. Another pitcher who has battled injuries during his first two seasons is redshirt sophomore Charlie LoBosco and should have a chance to earn some innings out of the bullpen early in the season. The last spot in the bullpen to be determined is the closer role with senior Ryan Fennell and sophomore Jon Fitzsimmons getting the first crack. Fennell, a 6-foot-4 righty, held opposing batters to a .261 batting average when they put the ball in play – the lowest opponents’ batting average of any Canisius pitcher during the 2011 season. Fitzsimmons had a 2.25 ERA in his last five appearances and averaged 10.97 strikeouts per nine innings.

“We know what we will get from Billy. He is a pitcher who will throw strikes, compete on the mound and give us a chance to win,” McRae said. “Garrett has improved dramatically and has a chance to continue that improvement if he keeps working hard.” Early in the season, the other rotation spots will go to a pair of talented

Head Coach • Eighth Season 254-281 (.475) Overall 134-115 (.538) MAAC Mike McRae is in his eighth season as head coach of the Canisius College baseball program. McRae has led a total rebuilding project of the Golden Griffins, taking over a team that won four games in 2004 to being a perennial contender for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship. McRae has a record of 189195 in his seven seasons at Canisius, including a 142-88 (.617) record in the last four seasons that includes two MAAC regular-season titles. McRae, the three-time MAAC Coach of the Year, has led Canisius to the postseason in each of the last five seasons. The Golden Griffins won the program’s first postseason game in 2008, played in the title game of the 2009 MAAC Tournament and have advanced to the championship round of the MAAC Tournament in two of the last three seasons – the only two appearances in the championship round in program history. During the past four seasons, the Golden Griffins have won 142 games, putting Canisius No. 3 in wins in the Northeast region. Accolades for the Griffs during that time include: • Third in the Northeast in wins the last four seasons • 43rd in the country in wins the last four seasons • 18th among schools from non-power conferences in wins the last four seasons • One of 43 schools in the country with 35-plus wins in at least three of the last four seasons • One of three schools in Northeast with 35-plus wins in at least three of the last four seasons Canisius has had eight players associated with the program selected in the Major League Baseball Draft during the past four years. • 2011 — Sean Jamieson (17th Round — Oakland Athletics) • 2011 — Chris Cox (39th Round — Toronto Blue Jays) • 2011 — Shane Davis (42nd Round — Toronto Blue Jays) • 2010 — Steve McQuail (30th Round — Toronto Blue Jays) • 2009 — Kevin Mahoney (23rd Round — New York Yankees) • 2009 — Kevin Mailloux (45th Round — Seattle Mariners) • 2008 — Benson Merritt (42nd Round — Cincinnati Reds) • 2008 — Nathan Linseman (45th Round — Detroit Tigers) Canisius has had three players named All-Americans during the last four seasons – the only three All-Americans in program history. Steve McQuail was named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2010. Shane Davis and Kevin Mailloux were the first Golden Griffins to be named All-Americans, earning the recognition during the 2008 campaign. Davis received a total of eight All-America and Freshman All-America honors while Mailloux was named an AllAmerican by the ABCA.

The Golden Griffins have had three Capital One Academic All-Americans during the past two seasons. Drew Pettit earned First-Team honors and Sean Jamieson earned Second-Team honors in 2011.

During the past five seasons, Canisius has won the MAAC Player of the Year (twice), MAAC Coach of the Year (twice), MAAC Rookie of the Year

In 2010, Choy was the first MAAC baseball player to be honored since 2004 and first Canisius player to earn the accolade since 1997. Also, Jamieson was named the MAAC Male Athlete of the Year for the 201011 academic year, the first Canisius male athlete (in any sport) to win the award. In 2010, the Griffs won their second MAAC regular-season title in three years, jumping out to a 16-2 start in conference play en route to a 19-5 MAAC record. In 2009, Canisius posted a 36-22 record, qualifying for the MAAC Tournament for third consecutive season. After dropping its first game in the postseason, the Griffs battled back and won three consecutive elimination games to force a decisive championship game. Canisius jumped onto the national scene in 2008 with a 21.5-game improvement in its won-loss record from 2007 (20-35), the biggest improvement in the country and second-biggest in the NCAA since 1998. Canisius was one of 31 teams in NCAA Division I with 40-plus victories. Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2011 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Cory Conacher finished his career with 12 school records, including the program’s career points and goals standards. Maura Frauenhofer placed second at the 2010 MAAC Championship, the highest finish by a Griff since 1997.
