Nikki Gabrielli Assistant Coach (Canisius, 2009)
Nikki Gabrielli enters her second year as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Canisius College. After graduating from Canisius with four years of playing experience, Gabrielli completed her bachelors degree in education. She is currently in the masters of education program at Canisius College, getting her masters in special education. As a player, Gabrielli was a premier back in the MAAC, and one of a few players in school history to start every game of her career, with 1500 of 1515 minutes of possible play. As a senior she was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Third Team, the first women’s soccer player to earn the honor since 2001. A team captain, Gabrielli led a defense that allowed the lowest shots and shots on goal in school history. She also was a leader in the classroom, named to the MAAC All-Academic Team all three seasons she was eligible and winning the Cannon Leadership Award as a senior. In her senior year, Gabrielli was named to the All-Tournament team at the Select Kickoff Classic, and was selected to the MAAC AllTournament Team and First Team All-MAAC. In her collegiate career, Gabrielli also helped anchor a defense that led the MAAC in goals allowed and recorded the second-best goals against average in school history, personally recorded two shots on the 2006 season and in 2005, was named to All-Tournament Team at Caroline Pardee Invitational when the Griffs allowed only 14 shots during their two games. Coach Wendling’s comments: “What she brings to the team as a coach is that same voice and intensity during practice to try to light a fire under the girls that she had as a player. She knows the girls; she knows what they are capable of doing. She doesn’t expect less from them, she expects more from them because she knows what they can do. The girls really respect her and listen to her and do what she asks.”
Erin Finnegan Athletic Trainer (Canisius, 2005)
Erin Finnegan enters her fourth year as an assistant athletic trainer at Canisius College. Her primary responsibilities lie with women’s basketball and women’s soccer. She also serves as an adjunct professor and clinical instructor in the CAATE Accredited Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program at the College. Finnegan returns to her alma mater after two years at St. Bonaventure University where her primary responsibilities were with the women’s basketball, women’s soccer and softball programs. Prior to her tenure at St. Bonaventure, Finnegan served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Ohio University. While working in Athens, Ohio, Finnegan earned a master’s degree of science in athletic training education in 2006. During her stint with the Bobcats, she covered men’s and women’s rugby and men’s and women’s lacrosse at the club level. Along with her duties on the field, the West Seneca, N.Y. native also conducted evaluations and rehabs for all of the 32 club sports teams and served as a teacher’s assistant and co-instructor in Ohio’s undergraduate sports medicine program. Finnegan is currently an active member of the National Athletic and New York State Athletic Trainer’s Associations.

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
2010 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year, while Female Athlete of the Year Sylvia Kowalski earned All-MAAC and ECAC All-Star accolades.

The Imagine Canisius capital campaign was the most successful fund-raising effort undertaken by Canisius College and was recognized in 2001 as the top fund-raising accomplishment among the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Hurley played a significant leadership role in the college’s $142 million capital investment in the campus, and negotiated the college’s acquisition of the HealthNow building on Main Street. Hurley is the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing program, which offers incentives to Canisius employees who purchase homes in neighborhoods surrounding the college. He also led the branding initiative that developed the college’s positioning statement Canisius College: Where Leaders are Made. A native of Buffalo, Hurley graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore and earned a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, in English and history from Canisius College. He was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Notre Dame School of Law, where he earned a juris doctor degree in 1981. Prior to Canisius, Hurley practiced law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber. He concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency, creditors’ rights and acquisitions of troubled companies. Hurley was appointed by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec to serve on the Fidelis Care New York Board of Directors, a health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State. He is also chair the Bishop’s Council on the Laity for Bishop Kmiec. Hurley is a past member of the city of Buffalo’s Charter Revision Commission and past president of the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Board of Trustees. Hurley is also a recipient of the college’s LaSalle Medal (1996), the highest honor conferred upon an alumna/us for service to alma mater, and was inducted into the Signum Fidei Society of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute (1998). Hurley is the son of Doris Y. and the late Paul B. Hurley. He is married to Maureen O’Connell Hurley, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Rich Products Corporation in Buffalo. They have three children: Caroline, Brian and Millie.
Dr. Ellen Conley Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998.
