JESUIT UNIVERSITIES IN THE U.S.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? You’ve arrived at a time in your life where you’re asking some big questions. Canisius is a place where you’ll find some big answers. Here, you’ll encounter people who will help you uncover your unique gifts and develop the skills you’ll need for a successful professional future. You’ll also meet people who will challenge your ideas about the world, and help you discover your unique role in making it a better place. At Canisius you’ll become part of the rich tradition of Catholic, Jesuit education — one based on the idea that who you’re going to be is every bit as important as what you’re going to be. So if you want to learn to live a life that balances personal achievement with service to the world around you, we have good news — you can.

Preparing the whole person for the whole world.

Clayton Shanahan ’18 with Pradeep in Kuppayanallur, India

“ Our goal as a Jesuit university is to have students leave here transformed – smarter, of course, but also wiser, more compassionate, and more inspired.” John J. Hurley, President

A Catholic, Jesuit education is one attuned to developing the full self – which means your learning will address your intellectual, ethical and spiritual growth. You’ll have experiences in the real world, where you’ll consider the moral dimensions of the things you learn. It’s an education that will prepare you for a purposeful career – and life – dedicated to making the world a more just, compassionate and sustainable place.

Transforming Hearts

People For Others

Canisius students bear witness to societal injustice through our international and domestic service-immersion programs. These transformative experiences put them in direct contact with poor and marginalized people, and enable them to see the value of building relationships across socioeconomic lines. See where we travel and what we do at canisius.edu/immersion.

Each year Canisius students perform more than 18,000 hours of service in Western New York and across the U.S. A variety of opportunities are offered throughout the semester, with some students choosing to spend a portion of their breaks participating in our annual Winter Service Week and Alternative Spring Break programs.

Education, individualized.

Cura Personalis In Latin, it means “care for the entire person”. At Canisius, it means an experience where people will know you, understand your goals and help you to reach them. Fr. James Martin, SJ, author and editor-at-large of America Magazine, is a firm believer in the concept and how it's lived here at Canisius. See for yourself in this video on our website: canisius.edu/curapersonalis

“Canisius has given me great role models and an amazing support system. I’m not just a number here - every faculty member wants me to succeed.” Dilpreet Kaur ’17, Biology & Pre-Med

Canisius College is a community of individuals. You won’t get lost here – you’ll work every day with people who know your name and who are personally invested in you and your dreams. They’ll make sure your experience here is as unique as you are, personalized to help you realize the full promise of your gifts. These relationships define our community, inspiring students and preparing them for a world of opportunities.

Learning of, and for, the world. The idea of the world as a classroom is one we take very seriously. From your freshman year onward, you’ll do real work in the real world. Experiential learning is fundamental to a Canisius education – because engagement with the world, and the people in it, is what transforms purely academic knowledge and classroom work into truly meaningful understanding and action.

GLOBAL IMMERSION EXPERIENCES

You are what you learn. Academic life at Canisius is intense, illuminating, and demanding. Every day, you’ll be challenged to think independently and creatively. You’ll read, write and learn with purpose. And every step of the way, you’ll be working closely with highly accomplished educators who, in addition to actively advancing their own fields, have a deep investment in your success. Together, you’ll elevate the experiences of learning and living.

Christopher Lee, PhD Associate Professor of Religious Studies & Theology A cultural anthropologist, Dr. Lee takes students on a fascinating journey in his popular class Magic, Science, and Religion, which covers everything from new religious movements to the role of zombies in American culture.

Rev. James Pribek, SJ Associate Professor of English Father Pribek is a Dublin-educated expert in Irish literature and an internationallyrenowned James Joyce scholar. Known for his impassioned lectures, Father Pribek encourages unity between students’ intellectual and spiritual growth.

An unshakeable foundation. Regardless of your major, your learning will include “the core” — a rich, liberal arts background that instills lifelong habits of reflection, critical thinking, and persuasive expression. These are the irreplaceable skills that will serve you well throughout your personal and professional life.

Ignatian Scholarship Day Each year Canisius celebrates Ignatian Scholarship Day — a campuswide conference where students showcase scholarly discovery through displays, presentations, artwork, and live performance.

Melissa Wanzer, EdD Professor of Communication Studies

Joseph O’Donnell, PhD, CPA Professor of Accounting

A favorite among Canisius students, Dr. Wanzer’s Constructive Uses of Humor class examines the role of laughter in fields from medicine to education. Students watch classic comedy for homework, and final exams can be a stand-up routine performed for classmates.

No ordinary CPA, Dr. O’Donnell’s background includes work with both the Peace Corps and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He’s an expert in accounting information systems and information technology auditing, a published author and a favorite professor in New York’s number one accounting program.

Humanities: An education for life. The humanities include many different subjects, and they can lead you in many different directions. Whether you choose communications or the arts, political science or philosophy, the things you’ll learn – and the way you’ll learn them – will prepare you for almost anything you can imagine. And with a wide range of choices that can be customized and combined, majoring in the humanities is not only practical, it can take you practically anywhere.

ESPN Experience In partnership with ESPN, Canisius offers a new concentration in sports journalism. Students produce live broadcasts of Canisius sporting events, providing in-game content, interviews, highlight packages, and coaches’ shows. Their broadcasts air live on ESPN3 from the stateof-the-art Golden Griffin Sports Broadcast Center, and reach 99 million households across the nation.

Cuban Immersion Canisius modern language students have the remarkable opportunity to spend five weeks living and learning in the Republic of Cuba. Students conduct a first-hand exploration of culture and politics in the island nation, examining issues of poverty, transportation, and housing.

21st Century Creativity Canisius is nurturing a new generation of artists and designers in our Digital Media Arts program. Working with state-of-the– art design equipment, students explore animation, digital filmmaking and game design as they build the portfolios they’ll need to launch rewarding careers.

Tom Rovito ’15 History & Political Science During internships with elected officials in Buffalo, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., Tom gained experience with everything from political campaigns to national security. Now as a second-year law student at the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State, he’s well on his way toward a future in politics.

Supreme Court Connections Every year pre-law and political science majors get a behind-the-scenes look into the workings of the Supreme Court. Students listen to oral arguments during live court sessions, converse with clerks, and, on occasion, meet the justices themselves.

What sets a Canisius science education apart are the kinds of opportunities that most students don't think are possible until graduate school. You won’t just learn by studying other people’s scientific work – you’ll do your own. You’ll conduct real-world research with real-world applications, on campus and off. You’ll explore your areas of interest with faculty mentors who are conducting their own groundbreaking research. And if you’re planning on graduate work, you’ll find yourself a few steps ahead when you get there.

Want to do real scientific work and earn real money? You can. Each year Canisius awards more than 100 grants to students under the Canisius Earning Excellence Program (CEEP). These students collaborate with their faculty sponsors to identify an area of investigation — and they’re paid a stipend for their work.

Real Research. Keeping Food Safe Robert Grebenok, PhD investigates the interplay between herbivorous insects and agriculturally important crops, work that can lead to insect resistant plant species and a reduced need for pesticides.

Combating Malaria Katie Costanzo, PhD is an evolutionary ecologist studying how climate influences traits in mosquitoes — and how those traits can affect diseases they carry.

Taking Aim at Cancer Jeremy Steinbacher, PhD is working to develop biomedical agents that more accurately target tumorous tissue — leading to the safer delivery of lifesaving chemotherapy.

Joe Schnitter ’15 History & Pre-Med Joe’s interest in urban healthcare issues stemmed from an honors thesis on the history of infectious diseases, a topic that became more real during a year of service with AIDS United in Washington, D.C. Joe is now a first-year med student at New York’s Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Alex Ferrente ’15 Animal Behavior, Ecology & Conservation Fueled by a passion for marine mammals, Alex joined Dr. Noonan’s highly regarded research team at Canisius. Study at Marineland Canada led to a summer position there and helped to launch her career as a whale watch naturalist.

Canine Insight Christy Hoffman, PhD conducts research that examines factors contributing to positive human-dog relationships, providing insights that can lead to more successful animal adoptions.

Sara Overhoff ’11 MBA ’15 Management Sara’s interest in global business started during a semester abroad in Italy and continued during her internship at Rich Products. This experience, combined with a minor in global supply chain, helped launch a career as a logistics analyst at New Era Cap.

Chris Rider ’15 International Business & History Chris’ interest in Latin America led to a trip to El Salvador and a semester abroad in Peru where he gained invaluable experience as an intern with ColgatePalmolive. A connection with an alumnus led to an internship at Rich Products and then to a fulltime position on the company's sales and marketing team for Latin America.

Nicole Gangloff ’15, MBA ’16 Accounting & Accounting Information Systems The Department of Accounting offers many networking opportunities, and Nicole made the most of them. A connection with PricewaterhouseCoopers led to an internship, and then a job offer as an associate in the firm’s tax practice — during her junior year.

Education: Teach to Learn. Teaching is a profession for people who are passionate about making a difference, and Canisius is a school dedicated to nurturing that kind of passion. Real experience is the foundation of our education program, so you’ll have opportunities at schools of all kinds, culminating in two, seven-week sessions of full-time teaching (and learning) that will change your life.

PARTNERSHIPS WITH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS

International Experience Canisius education majors can enhance their preparation through an international teaching experience. Students travel to Oviedo, Spain to teach in an ESL immersion program, giving them an invaluable opportunity to practice their skills and improve their own Spanish language proficiency.

School Partnerships Carefully cultivated partnerships with Western New York public and private schools give students valuable classroom experience starting in their freshman year. From observing teachers to delivering instruction in a range of K-12 environments, students get a feel for the profession and discover areas of interest that can influence their own studies.

Dorian Dallas ’13 Adolescence Education Dorian’s pre-service placements at seven different schools gave him extensive experience and perspective regarding a range of student populations. These experiences serve him well in his role as an ELA teacher at Sweet Home, a highly-diverse public high school.

Understanding Autism With more than $5 million in federal and private grants, the Institute for Autism Research (IAR) at Canisius is breaking new ground in treatments for autism. Education majors can get hands-on experience as part of our nationally recognized research team.

Amanda Moran ’12, MS ’14, MS ’15 Physical Education / Health Amanda’s dual major combined a love for working with kids and a passion for sports. Partnerships with area schools gave her real experience in real classrooms and prepared her for a career as a PE and health teacher at Sacred Heart Academy.

Welcome home. Whether you’re a resident student or a commuter, Canisius is going to feel a lot like home. There’s a lot of community packed into our 72-acre campus, including clubs, sports, events, and places to socialize with friends. When you come here, you join a family that you’ll always be a part of. And that’s what we call living the #CanisiusLife.

Living. Each of our five residence halls has a character and life of its own. First-year students usually reside in either Bosch or Frisch Halls, which feature spacious double and suite-style rooms with all the amenities of home. Themed housing is also available to freshmen who share similar interests, like science, creativity, and social justice.

Eating. Our main dining hall, Economou, is open for three meals on weekdays and has an extensive buffet brunch and dinner on weekends. There are lots of other quick dining options on campus for regular meals or late night snacks, including Science Hall Café, Iggy’s Classic Grill, Starbucks, Subway and Tim Horton’s.

Playing. When Canisius students work, they work hard. And when they play, they play hard, too. Whether it’s cheering for our 20 NCAA Division 1 sports teams, taking the field in a club or intermural sport, or getting involved in an academic, social or service club, there’s something here for everyone.

Buffalo's winter weather isn't as bad as some believe, but it does get cold. That's what makes the tunnels across our main campus so great. People can get to class, the library, activities or the dining hall and never have to step outside.

Cadets at Canisius The Golden Griffin Battalion has been recognized as one of the top Army ROTC programs in the nation, with Canisius serving as the region's Army ROTC hub.

A Modern Resource Whether students need a book, a study space, or help with technology, the recently renovated Bouwhuis Library has it. This space offers group study rooms, a comfortable study environment, and even a Tim Horton’s coffee shop to keep you going.

You’re going to be a fan. Going to Canisius means being part of a culture where sports fans bleed blue and gold. Whether it’s basketball at the KAC, lacrosse at Demske Field, or hockey in the Griffin Nest at HarborCenter, your college experience will be filled with Division 1 sports excitement.

What’s a Griffin? It's a mythological hybrid of an eagle and lion — and the symbol of our proud athletic tradition.

Yes, Buffalo. There’s a lot to see and do here in New York State’s second biggest city, and Canisius puts you (just about literally) in the center of it all. Buffalo is a great college town, big in a lot of ways (history, culture, sports, heart) but friendly and manageable in lots of others. Rated as one of America’s best mid-sized cities for college, it’s a great place to go to school and an even better place to live.
