St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, dedicated the Jesuits in service to the cities and the people who live there. In keeping with this Jesuit tradition, we believe it’s not enough to live in our community. We have a responsibility to help transform it for the good of others.

COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL IMPACT
Borders and Migrations Initiative
Launched in 2018, the Borders and Migrations Initiative informs the Canisius community and beyond about issues of migration and current advocacy. The initiative is a collaborative, Ignatian approach by students, faculty and staff, which encourages discussion about and engagement with refugee and immigration issues on a global scale. 400+ Campus and community members attend programming in person or via Zoom* 7 Community partners

Justice for Migrant Families
Since its inception, the Borders and Migrations Initiative has partnered with Justice for Migrant Families. Students in the college’s classics, sociology and Spanish programs receive training regarding entering an ICE detention center and visit detainees allowing them to make human connections with those affected by the immigration system. Spanish students practice their Spanish language skills visiting those from South and Central America. 75 Impacted as a result of a food bank for migrant families*

Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)
The goal of the HEOP at Canisius is to make higher education a reality for New York State residents who are academically under-prepared and economically disadvantaged. 1969 Established at Canisius College 25 Students admitted annually
Say Yes to Education
Canisius is proud to partner with Say Yes to Education, a national organization committed to increasing high school and college graduation rates. 2013 Established at Canisius 79 Graduates from Buffalo Public/Charter schools received scholarships from Canisius
Women’s Business Center (WBC)
As the region’s most comprehensive resource for women in business, the Women’s Business Center at Canisius empowers entrepreneurs to succeed through education, professional connections and community relationships. 750 Clients served $2.5M Business financing $54M Gross revenue 445 Jobs supported

NEW BUFFALO INSTITUTE (NBI)
The New Buffalo Institute (NBI) at Canisius aligns the college’s research, service and educational programming in target areas, with a particular geographic focus on the neighborhoods of the East Side of Buffalo, where the college is situated. The NBI affirms the college’s commitment to social justice, provides a welcoming place for the community to convene, exchange concerns and ideas and explore new ways to partner with community organizations to address persistent challenges confronting East Side neighborhoods.
Urban Education
Center for Urban Education (CUE)
Canisius partnered with the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education to form the Center for Urban Education. The CUE enhances the quality of teaching and learning in urban schools across Western New York infusing culturally relevant pedagogy with academic excellence, experiential learning and social justice. 2017 Established at Canisius 25 Professional development events and community activities
Western New York Teacher Residency Program
An innovative program for training the next generation of teachers, the Western New York Teacher Residency Program includes a yearlong teaching residency and graduates make a three-year commitment to teach in an urban school in the Buffalo Niagara region. 2020 Established at Canisius 25 Graduates
School Partnerships
Field experience and clinical practice are central to the preparation of teacher candidates at Canisius College. The School of Education & Human Services has developed many strong, intentional relationships with school partners who share responsibility and accountability for teacher preparation and student learning. 15 Partner schools 30 Schools in WNY (teacher candidates complete student teaching)
Teach for America (TFA)*
TFA chose Canisius as its exclusive Buffalo partner to recruit, educate and support corps members to become highly-qualified teachers. Corps members teach full time in low-income communities while completing required coursework. 116 Graduates

Protect & Serve
Neighborhood safety begins with the Public Safety Department. It is important that our students, faculty, staff and neighbors are available to work, study and live in an environment that is safe and secure. Public Safety provides a strong presence around the clock on campus and in the college’s surrounding neighborhoods. 1st Private college public safety department in New York State to attain peace officer authority 21 Sworn peace officers
Entrepreneurship and Economic Development
A revitalized Western New York continues to benefit from new construction, new initiatives, new businesses and new populations of people. From the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus to Canalside, and the development of a number of key industries.
