“FORM ENHANCES FUNCTION” How an idea can be applied to the architecture? How forms and functions become synchronized to tell an idea? The project is experimenting the relationship between form and function surrounding with “Creativity” idea and the “School of Design”.

AIMS The design looks to the school of design as a creativity cave. Composition of places that where interaction and creativity occurs in an optimum way. Like Louis I. Kahn said; “The nature of things must be questioned.” For us, the school of design’s nature is where creativity and interaction begin and multiply.

SCHOOL OF ATHENS

BRITISH COFFEEHOUSE

It is called the best creative place in history. In the painting, important philosophers, painters and many other important people are reflected as they are talking, thinking arguing, sharing something with passion, in a more general way, they are interacting.

British coffeehouses became popular when enlightenment period started. In the drawing, people are sitting, talking, arguing, and sharing something when they are eating or drinking. Like School of Athens, they are somehow interacting, and the coffehouse became their place to interact with each other.

PARISIAN CAFE

MELBOURNE SCHOOL OF DESIGN

Like British coffeehouses, Parisian cafeterias were emerged when modernism’s glory days. Many movements were not started in one day. They are talked, they are perfected them, then the movements are occurred by people. It is all begin with an interaction, and the interaction brings ideas, when the ideas begin to come up, we called it creativity.

This reference photo from M.S.D. has a similarity with other 3 “Third Places”, because when the photo is analyzed, it is seen that with identified functions, and architectural elements, third places can be created by consciously.

RE - LAY ER IN G T H E CIT Y URBAN AND HOUSING DESIGN A study about how infected city can be operated with green and water elements.

PROJECT TYPE: Urban and Housing INSTRUCTOR: Yenal Akgün DATE: Oct - Dec 2018 LOCATION: Izmir | Poligon District WORK TYPE: Group Work | 3 People GROUP ROLE: - Analysing Site - Concept Developing | Desinging (Masterplan and Housing) - Visualizations (Renders | Diagrammes.) - Sketch Drawings - Technical Drawings

02 | RE - LAYERING THE CITY | URBAN & HOUSING DESIGN

ABSTRACT Poligon district has many solid masses without green and public squares. There are many voids that are not identified. And there is also the canal which is called Poligon river in old times, does not contain any water anymore instead of rainy days because of authority’s bad decisions. For us, city is a living thing and it has its own anatomy. It has veins which provides circulations (roads, bicycle ways and pedestrian ways) and the lungs that provides breathing (Green areas, public squares, recreational areas) and the hearth which gives a unique character for the city. For the Poligon district, we think the heart of the area is the Poligon river. Right now the heart does not function and it behaves as a boundary between two sides which are the social zone and inhabiting zone. However, there are some tiny pieces of aliveness in the Poligon canal. There are trees which scattered randomly, little green bushes, some plants which has rough root system pierced through the concrete canal. Instead of making a general analysis of the poligon district, we focused on living beings in that area. The purpose of the analysis is basically understanding the anatomy of this district and preparing the right treatment for that area.

FLOOD PLAIN

Floodplain: When the heavy rain comes, water will go up and slows down.

TOE WOOD TECHNIQUE

Floodplain: dissipates energy during flood. It is the critical component of the stream system.

#1 REDUCES FLOOD RISK

Toe wood: Stabilizing outer edge of the miander, reduces earth loss, helpful for creating habitat.

POOLS / RIFFLES

Pools: Life zone. Where the plants and fishes or other creatures lives in. Slowest zone.

03 | PUBLIC CATALYST | COMMUNITY CENTER

ARCHITECTURE AS A CHEMICAL REACTION Location, typology, and context have a big part of architectural design. For this special area, a community center programmes was selected, because the area has a lack of continuity between neighbourhoods, and the center of the discontinuity, community center plays a role as a glue of 3 disconnected neighbourhoods. With 3 components (neighbourhoods), community center becomes a catalyst for mixing them.

AIMS The design gets its inspiration from existing typology in that area. The aim is in an urban scale, make a connection between three neighbourhoods, and with the typology inspiration, the design tries to make people feel to be like their streets.

Existing Situation

Neighbourhoods as a materials of a chemical reaction, the design field will be the catalyst of the reaction. It will mix these neighbourhoods and other users.

RE S O NATOR M ACH IN E SEISMIC DESIGN Earthquake and Buildings Experiment

REPORT With the experimentation, it is seen that resonance mainly related with height of the building and its mass. If the building’s height is bigger, the period will be longer, and when the eartquake’s period is long, the probability of resonance increases. On the other hand, resonance frequency could be changed with mass. If a mass is placed on the building which is resonating, its frequency is going to change. In addition, when the mass increases, the period of the building is going to be longer.
