Welcome to the 45th Festival CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH A SHARED LOVE OF FOLK MUSIC

Well, it has certainly has been a crazy couple of years. Like so many other parts of our lives, COVID-19 wreaked havoc on the music industry, but we did our best, pivoted where we could and hung in there. We’re back! Sticking to our mission of: “Creating a community through a shared love of folk music” as a guide, we put together two online festivals; the “Great Paws Virtual Show” in 2020, and a unique temporary website that included concerts, workshops, an artisan area, food area, and a special area for volunteers in 2021. We hired artists, created new content and had unique programming for our faithful Canmore Folk Music Festival audience. I am very proud of what we put together, but am so happy to be welcoming you back to a live event and I know we all ready for some live music! Sue Panning Festival Director

We have a wonderful lineup that will make you laugh, cry, clap, and dance the weekend away. I know I am going to be cheering extra loud to show my appreciation for artists being back on the road ready to entertain us all. This year has been an interesting long journey of hard work, commitment and focus by a wide range of people to make the festival happen. Our not-for-profit organization is largely run by volunteers including our board, coordinators and the 600 folks you see in their volunteer T-shirts. Without these folks, we would not have been able to pull this off. We are all in this together to celebrate, reunite, discover and enjoy a weekend of good music, and good vibes. We are a community and thanks for being here with us! Be sure to check out the Food and Artisan Vendors, Community Booths and Family Area. Our team did a nice job of choosing a good mix of options. A few of our sponsors have booths as well and are worth checking out. We so appreciate all our sponsors! We couldn’t pull this off without them. A big

shout out to our presenting sponsor, TD Bank, which stuck by us over the past two years to help us present our virtual offerings, as did a few others. Our funders were a big part of that as well. You might like to check out our Mountain FM Pub Stage where you can grab a libation and listen to some of our talented locals, School of Song artists, and a few main stage artists as well. We have a branded beer this year called the Groovy Bear courtesy of the Grizzly Paw. How fun is that? New this year, we have partnered with the Canmore Museum to provide you an opportunity to hear Indigenous stories not only through the music at the festival, but also with the sessions at the NWMP barracks, a short walk from the festival grounds. We have been working on a new vision for the future of the folk festival – “More than a Weekend” – which shows our intent to provide offerings throughout the year. We have partnered with many organizations like the Banff Centre, artsPlace, and the Canmore Museum, as well as worked on various artist development projects like the Mentorship Project we hosted last fall. Our aim is to explore ways to do more throughout the year and give back to our community. Our Artist Development Fund supports emerging artists through scholarships to high school students, brings music into schools, and more. It is one way you can help us realize our new mission. As this endowment fund grows we will be able to do more projects and events to support emerging artists and keep the music flowing throughout the year. The future is bright – especially with your help. Welcome back. Have a wonderful weekend!! Sue Panning, Festival Director

GREETINGS FROM OUR MAYOR SEAN KRAUSERT

MESSAGE FROM THE HONOURABLE RON ORR

MESSAGE FROM THE HONOURABLE PABLO RODRIGUEZ

Welcome to the 45th annual Canmore Folk Festival! Welcome to the 45th annual Canmore Folk Festival!

On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I am pleased to welcome you all to the Canmore Folk Music Festival.

The arts bring Canadians together in a shared celebration of our history, traditions, and diversity.

We are incredibly proud of this event, what it brings to our community and those who come to enjoy it.

The events of the last two years have taught us many lessons. Chief among them is the importance of health, not only mental and physical, but social health as well.

Canadians across the country are eager to come together and enjoy live performances again. Our government is proud to support events like the Canmore Folk Music Festival that highlight and celebrate the rich diversity of our musical heritage.

During your stay here, I encourage you to leave your car at your accommodation and explore Canmore by foot, bicycle or using our FREE local transit. Save yourself the hassle of finding parking and explore the community while you make your way to the festival. While we can thank the gorgeous backdrop for helping create an unbelievable venue, this event would not be what it is without the help of the 550+ volunteers that come together to make it all happen. I want to thank all the volunteers for your efforts, it is greatly appreciated. I can’t think of a better way to spend the long weekend than by listening to great music in the mountains.

Social health requires people coming together to strengthen and build community. That’s just what the Canmore Folk Music Festival has been doing since 1978. After a two-year absence, it is once again providing folk music lovers with the opportunity to come together in person and enjoy the universal language of music. Thank you to the Canmore Folk Music Society for your hard work and dedication in organizing this event. Thank you to the audience. Because of your patronage, the show can go on. Enjoy the show! Ron Orr, Minister or Culture

IN 1978, THE CANMORE FOLK FESTIVAL MADE ALBERTA MUSIC HISTORY WITH A SIMPLE MISSION: TO CREATE A COMMUNITY THROUGH A SHARED LOVE OF FOLK MUSIC. WE HAVE COME TOGETHER EVERY YEAR SINCE, EVEN THE LAST TWO YEARS AMID THE CHAOS. We have expanded that mission is to include being “more than a weekend”. The Artist Development Fund (ADF) is a large part of that. We created the ADF to make our mark throughout the year by giving back to the community and supporting emerging artists. Look around you. You are that community. For any of us who has unfolded a chair to sit for a while, these stages are an escape into new sounds, ageless stories, and chords that can strike us deeper than our own memories. For the artists that deliver that escape, this community is their life and these stages are their lifeline to a career.

Canmore Folk Music Festival

So what do we do with the other 361 days of the year to make this happen? We try and foster love of music by introducing kids to a variety early. Over the years, we’ve brought musicians into our schools, for both concerts and educational sessions as well as provided four music scholarships in our local high schools. We have hosted several song-writing workshops including one with Danny Michel this past June, and one in 2019 with Michael Bernard Fitzgerald. Songwriting is a key piece in an artist’s skill set. Providing these free song-writing sessions provides locals with inspiration, motivation and key “nuggets” of information to help them along their musical journey. We are always looking for new projects to broaden our reach and support emerging artists from the Bow Valley. To do that, we need people like you to support us! We know you’ve shown us your support by being here at the festival today, but, can we ask you to do more? With your help, the Canmore Artist Development Fund will keep that community strong.

You’ve shown support by coming to the festival. Can we ask you to do more? With your help, the Canmore Artist Development Fund will keep that community strong. You can donate right at the Raffle Tent, cash or credit.

DANCING ZONE

Festival Rules + Good Etiquette

THE CANMORE FOLK FESTIVAL OFFERS AN OFFICIAL DANCING ZONE FOR THE FINAL ACTS OF OUR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT MAIN STAGE CONCERTS. THIS AREA IS DESIGNED TO TRY AND STRIKE A HAPPY MEDIUM BETWEEN THOSE WHO LIKE TO MELLOW OUT ON THEIR TARPS AND CHAIRS AND WATCH THE PERFORMANCES, WITH THOSE WHO LIKE TO MOVE TO THE MUSIC, THE CLOSER THE BETTER.

YOU’RE A WONDERFUL PERSON – KIND, CONSIDERATE, THOUGHTFUL AND CARING. BUT AS YOUR GRANDPARENTS WOULD SAY, YOU MAKE A BETTER DOOR THAN A WINDOW, SO PLEASE BE KIND, CONSIDERATE, THOUGHTFUL AND CARING ABOUT THE PEOPLE SITTING BEHIND YOU.

TARPS & HIGH CHAIRS (24” and above) TARPS & LOW CHAIRS (less than 24”) “D-ZONE” SAT & SUN, 10-11pm STAN ROGERS STAGE

ALL DAY Dance Area

We introduced this many years ago after much consultation with other festival directors, both in other Canadian venues and from south of the border. Thanks to a highly respectful and cooperative crowd (for which the Canmore Folk Music Festival is renowned amongst its peers) it worked beautifully. The first nine metres (30 feet) in front of the Stan Rogers Stage has been designated as “The Zone” and it will be clearly marked for those doing the morning tarp rush for the Main Stage. If you set your tarp down in that area, you’re free to leave it there all day and through the first five acts of the Saturday and Sunday evening concerts. But right before the final performances those evenings we’re going to take a 15-minute break, at which time we’ll ask those in “The Zone” who don’t want to be in the middle of the action to gather their possessions and move to the sides. You can definitely stay if you like, but you’ll be on your feet! Dancing WILL be allowed in that transition zone. We would also like those who want to get up close to move forward along the paths to again demonstrate that wonderful respect we expect from our patrons. Please don’t rush through the crowds of those who are seated – there are quite likely sleeping children in that throng. Throughout the rest of the day and the earlier part of the evening concerts, we’ve designated dancing areas on both sides of the Main Stage seating area, both of which have great sight lines to the stage. Monday night does not have a dance set for the last act, so no “Zone” that night.

10

CanmoreFolkFestival.com

Canmore Folk Music Festival

If you are in a wheelchair or a tall lawn chair, please use the designated seating area we’ve set aside especially for you in the main stage area. The maximum chair size for the “short chair” section is 24 inches from the ground to the top of the chair back, including a maximum leg length of eight inches. There are a limited number of these for sale in our merchandise tent. Here’s a few other rules we’ve had to put in place to ensure everyone has the best festival possible:

NO TENTS In recent years many festivals have seen the advent of people bringing small nylon tents for their children to nap in and chill out. Many festivals are in fact grappling with how to accommodate these, given that they seriously block people’s ability to see the stage. We have such a small site, and we already struggle with the lawn chair issue, that we have decided to just say no. Sorry!

TARPS/BLANKETS/APPAREL Your tarp/blanket site is limited to 6X8 feet. Festival-style chairs are allowed throughout the main stage seating area, but are restricted to 24 inches high, from the ground to the top of the chair back, including a maximum leg length of eight inches. Special areas are designated to the rear of the crowd for taller lawn chairs. Any complaints about chair height should be directed to our Security volunteers, who can be identified by their red T-shirts. There is no reserved seating at the side stages. Please do not leave your tarps or chairs unattended in these areas. Please bring individual rain apparel, as large “group tarps” meant to cover whole groups interfere with the ability of those sitting behind them to see the stage.

THE LINEUP People who have purchased advance tickets tend to line up to ensure they get their preferred seating location. This starts at the main ticket gate before 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m. on Sunday and Monday. No one can claim seating space before the piper pipes the queue from the gate and across the soccer field. Be forewarned, though – these lineups at the gate tend to start queuing a lot earlier than that. Tickets for purchase will be available each day and you must be physically present to receive a wristband. You cannot send your friend to buy your ticket for you. Sorry.

PETS Pets are NOT allowed on the festival grounds, as per municipal bylaws. Please arrange to leave your pet at home or with friends. You may NOT tie your pet to the fence, and please do not leave it unattended in your vehicle. We will have to phone animal control officials immediately if we learn of either situation.

PARKING All-day parking is available on any of the numerous streets surrounding the Canmore Folk Fest site. Please do NOT block residential driveways if you choose street parking. There is also limited parking in the Lawrence Grassi Middle School parking lot on Seventh Ave., adjacent to our site, and throughout Canmore’s downtown area in the numerous public parking lots. Please note that several downtown lots now charge parking fees. Please be aware that this is one of the busiest weekends of the year for Canmore, so be prepared to walk a few blocks from your car to the gate. If you are staying in town, consider walking or biking. Roam transit is also a good option.

“ALL” SMOKE FREE In accordance with the Town of Canmore Bylaw 2018 -24, public consumption of Cannabis is prohibited on site and in public spaces. Cigarette smoking and vaping is only permitted in designated smoking areas.

KIDS Our Hijinx Family Area this year has lots of activities for the kids and the whole family. Sponsored by Hijinx toys you’ll find music, puppet shows, clowns and jugglers, crafts, storytellers, and much more. The area has its own stage and lineup – check out the family-friendly shows with Ms. Anie, Miranda Currie, Entangled Puppetry, and Alberta Parks. The schedule is available on page 32. The Hi Jinx Family Area is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Our family area surrounds the existing permanent playground in the northeast corner of the park, which has equipment for kids of all ages, as well as “adult” exercise playground equipment along the fence. Please be aware that the festival does NOT supervise these playgrounds – parents are responsible for their own children while on the festival site.

OTHER RESTRICTIONS

• • • •

SALES • RENTALS REPAIRS • LESSONS ONLINE SHOPPING

Due to the large number of attendees at the festival, bikes are not allowed on the site and must be left in the bike lock-up adjacent to the school just outside the main gate area. Do NOT lock your bike to the fence please. No alcohol or drugs will be permitted on the site. Bylaw prohibits cannabis use in all public spaces in Canmore. No unauthorized video or audio recording is allowed. We ask that you turn off cellphones during concerts.

Off-Site Happenings THE GATES ON SITE MAY NOT OPEN UNTIL 3:30 P.M. SATURDAY ( JULY 30), BUT THERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO DO TO HELP GET YOUR FESTIVAL FACE IN PLACE BEFOREHAND.

JUL 29 @ 7:30 P.M. FESTIVAL FRIDAY

JUL 30, 31 + AUG 1 MOUNTAIN FM STAGE 4 FESTIVAL PUB

Festival Friday is a free event to celebrate “Bringing our Community Back Together”. We are excited to have Danny Michel performing the Festival Friday free concert on July 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the main festival site in Centennial Park. Not only do you get a taste of an artist who will be part of the regular festival lineup, you will see some talented locals who were selected to share their songs about Community. As part of our Artist Development Program, the concert is the culmination of our summer songwriting mentorship project. In June, Danny hosted a songwriting workshop with local musicians and songwriters. This was an exciting opportunity to connect with such an accomplished singer and songwriter and fuelled some great submissions to our song contest for this event. The selected songwriters will perform their songs with Danny during the free Friday night concert. The festival is thrilled to be able to provide local musicians an opportunity to share the stage and be in the spotlight as we launch this exciting musical weekend together.

Take some time this weekend to check out the expanded Mountain FM Festival Pub. The Pub Posse is geared up for a celebration there this year after a two-year hiatus. Whether you sit inside to listen to the talented artists, or under the tent in our outdoor patio, it is a good place to unwind and have a nice beverage.

ANGELIQUE FRANCIS

BEDOUIN SOUNDCLASH

ANGELIQUEFRANCIS.NET CAN

BEDOUINSOUNDCLASH.COM CAN

Good golly Miss Molly! This young Ottawa blues phenom makes her first appearance at the Canmore Folk Festival this year, bringing us some searing, heart-rending ballads and over-the-top traditional blues. The stage doors may be blown off.

One of Canada’s most innovative and authentic acts, Toronto-based Bedouin Soundclash left big earworms on huge swaths of GenZ both here and abroad when they swooped onto the airwaves in 2001 with their first album Root Fire.

With horns, upright bass, drums, guitar, harmonica and exquisite vocals, Angelique and her team have made a huge imprint everywhere from Mariposa and Massey Hall to small festivals like ours. She draws from influences as varied as Koko Taylor and Big Mama Thornton to Aretha Franklin, and if you listen carefully, you can hear them all in a single performance.

And catch fire they did. Landing somewhere in the mix of ska, reggae, jazz and rock, the duo (vocalist/guitarist Jay Malinowski, and bassist Eon Sinclair) found themselves jockeying for air play and awards with Nickleback and Green Day. Their fifth and most recent album MASS (2019) was recorded in the swamp heat of late summer New Orleans in a wee speak-easy/jazz club they filled with fellow musicians, choirs and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band horn section. They did some tracks at the Preservation Hall itself and then polished it off in Vancouver at the St. James Church with the children of the St. James Music Academy.

Her first professional performance was at the age of seven at the grand opening of her elementary school. A televised gig that changed the course of her life. When she was 13, she made her American national debut for writing and composing an original song for The Gayle King Show on Oprah’s OWN network. Her band can be as few as three or as large as 10, depending on the venue, and sometimes includes her father and two younger sisters. She classifies her music as blues infuse, or blues-influence, and like a fine sauce the ingredients are everything: folk, soul, R&B, funk and, of course, blues with a capital B.

The album was released a full nine years after the release of their fourth album Light the Horizon. MASS has been described as a dense sonic journey with eclectic post-punk-world-beat tendencies. Whew. Scoring the Juno in 2006 for Best New Group, they’ve reaped dozens of nominations for both albums and videos, toured the Vans Warp Tour and appeared at the Vancouver Olympics.

DANNY MICHEL

ELK RUN AND RIOT

DANNYMICHEL.COM CAN

It is so trite to call Danny Michel a gifted singer-songwriter, although that is the facet of his many songs he brings to our stage. There is so, so much more to this man, though, so your homework is to do the deep dive. Start with Dan’s Space Van, link from his website. He is indeed gifted, and that lyrical gift is what we will enjoy this year, his second appearance at the festival. Multiple Juno nominations, a dozen albums to his credit, he’s earned kudos from such notables as Stuart McLean (who hosted him on Vinyl Cafe more than 70 times) and David Bowie, who loved his cover of Young Americans. The title track of Feather, Fur and Fin was included on a Playlist for the Planet, released by the David Suzuki Foundation in 2011. That same year he moved to Belize to record with The Garifuna Collective, a unique Afro-Amerindian cultural group he cites as one of his favourite bands, and together they came up with the album Black Birds are Dancing Over Me, lauded as “one of the finest musical works of our time” by Billboard’s Larry LeBlanc.

We LOVE to showcase the local talent (of which there is abundance), and sometimes will spend years watching them ripen and mature until ... they’re ready and we’re ready. They can hold their own against any lineup we can throw together for our main stage. Welcome to Elk Run and Riot, four local, insanely talented lads who’ve plied their craft from the Valley to the Coast and across the border, spreading the sound of intricate three – and four-part harmonies and deeply creative lyrics. From the initial local jam nights in their earliest days in 2013 to a Canmore Folk Fest main stage slot, four albums later and you’ll have to ask them how many kms on the odometer ... this is what it takes. The core of this alt folk group is Ryan Schepens (vocals/guitar), Andrew Cotter (vocals/guitar/bass), Brian Bailey (mandolin/bass), with Braden Hunter on drums. Their coherence as a group has earned them comparisons to The Band and their high energy performances have earned them opening spots for the likes of Wintersleep, The Dead South, The Sadies, The Deep Dark Woods, Elliott Brood, Leeroy Stagger, and many more

KAT DANSER AND THE TALL TALES

KATHLEEN EDWARDS

KATDANSER.COM CAN

KATHLEENEDWARDS.COM CAN

Edmonton’s Kat Danser doesn’t just play the blues – she studies it, lives it, breathes it and elevates it from sweaty, smoky beer joints to elegant centre stage in the finest of concert halls. Dubbed Canada’s “Queen of the Swamp Blues,” her sweet vocals, lyrical genius and instrumental prowess beautifully combine with her sharp wit and commanding stage presence to deliver unfailingly memorable performances. A nationally award-winning musician and music scholar, Danser has recently combined her talents with three equally talented musicians – Jimmy Guiboche (band leader), Chris Brzezicki (bass) and Kelly Kruse (drums) – to create Kat Danser and the Tall Tales. And yes, they were made for each other. Danser herself has racked up an impressive quiver of awards over the course of her 20-year career, including three Western Canadian Music Awards and a Maple Blues Award. She was recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. Danser is also a nationally award-winning scholar who has presented at conferences throughout North America. Her sixth and most recent album One Eye Open (2021), sees her continuing her long association and collaboration with Steve Dawson and features an ensemble of North America’s finest roots musicians. And like many albums produced during the pandemic shut downs, it was performed and assembled remotely.

Canadian alt-country singer Kathleen Edwards comes to us with a 20-plus year career of touring and recording and the kind of professional accolades many musicians can only envy. Her credits include five studio albums, three EPs and dozens of collaborations with other artists, from Bryan Adams to the Arkells. She’s been nominated for Junos for everything from songwriting to Album of the Year, shortlisted for the Polaris and won a SOCAN Echo Songwriting prize. She even landed a guest spot on the David Letterman show. Her songs are emotionally complex stories, delivered with a compelling country-tinged rock vibe and with a voice described as “cloud-grazing”. Her most recent album, 2020’s Total Freedom, came eight years after her previous album Voyageur, when she walked away from music. In her own words, she hit a “hard reset” on a musical career that filled her soul until it didn’t. She found it again in the world of space and time, in the small coffee shop she opened in her hometown near Ottawa, and then was lured to Nashville by a colleague for a songwriters’ session. The spark was reignited, the coffee shop sold and a stellar career burst once again into flames.

Every year the festival brings in at least one kicker dance act to get people swiftly on their feet, and here they are.Kobo Town is a Juno-winning Canadian/Caribbean group, led by Trinidadian Canadian singer and songwriter Drew Gonsalves. Based in Toronto, the band blends calypso with a diverse mix of influences, including ska, reggae and hip hop.Formed in 2004, Kobo Town has toured extensively throughoutEurope and North America, and has appeared at festivals in theCaribbean, Asia and Latin America. Its debut album Independence was released in 2007. The album was nominated for an Indie and a Canadian Folk Music Award. The band’s 2013 second album Jumbie in the Jukebox, was along listed nominee for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize, as well as for a Juno in 2014.After releasing Jumbie in the Jukebox, Gonsalves collaborated on the writing and production of Calypso Rose’s platinum-selling album Far From Home.Kobo Town’s third albumWhere the Galleon Sank was released in Canada in February 2017 and won a Canadian Folk MusicAward for World Group of the Year at the 13th annual CFMA. The album was named World Music Album of the Year at the 2018Juno Awards. They have just released their 4th album, Carnivals of the Ghost (2022).

The sweetly blended voices of roots duo Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac have been mesmerizing audiences worldwide since the two paired up professionally in 1999. With their heartfelt and sometimes heartbreaking lyrics that soar straight into your soul and stay on your tongue long after the final chord, the two have garnered numerous accolades, awards and nominations, regionally, nationally and internationally. The first Canadians to ever win the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (in 2009 for The Ransom, on their No Fool for Trying album). The album was their breakthrough, landing them acclaim from the BBC, the CBC, Maverick Magazine, NPR and Penguin Eggs Magazine, as well as a spot on the distinguished Mojo Magazine’s Top 10 playlist for the cut Small of My Heart. Their latest album, The Good in Goodbye, is an open diary of their personal and professional experiences together as friends and musicians, two very unique relationships that affect each other in profound ways. Their distinct take on iconic, Americana-inspired up-tempo melodies beautifully contrasts with their breathtakingly sweeping and personal lyrics, creating songs that blend nods to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch and a bit of the Indigo Girls for good measure.

QUOTE THE RAVEN

RAINBOW GIRLS

RAINBOWGIRLSMUSIC.COM USA

If you close your eyes you can catch hints of The Milk Carton Kids and a little bit of Brandi Carlile when Newfoundland’s Quote the Raven take the stage. But make no mistake, their sound is all their own. Their beautifully exquisite lullaby-like harmonies are captivating; their original songs about love, love lost and life on the road away from family speak to some pretty universal experiences. They defy pigeon-holing into any particular genre. Folk? Roots? There’s some wisps of country in there, but probably where they’d settle best is Americana, which only makes sense as they were able to perform at the 2019 AmericanaFest in Nashville before the pandemic doors slammed shut on touring and live performances. Their debut album Golden Hour earned them Music Newfoundland’s Group of the Year Award in 2019, and their exposure to Nashville set in motion their second album, Can’t Hold the Light, released in 2021. This year will be their first opportunity to tour that album.

Rainbow Girls are an eclectic folk trio hailing from the golden countryside just north of California’s Bay Area. Vanessa May, Erin Chapin, and Caitlin Gowdey seamlessly combine soultouching harmonies, varitextured instrumentals, and poignant lyrical content into a beautiful sonic tapestry. Throughout their performance, voices are paired with an ever-changing amalgamation of acoustic and slide guitar, keys, upright bass, harmonica, and an array of vocal techniques creating an engaging and often emotionally moving live show. Their music delves deeply into themes of the human experience: hopeful love, honest self-reflection, and pursuits of social justice. Their latest album, “American Dream,” crystallizes these ideas in acoustic amber, encapsulating a beautiful new direction for their ever evolving sound. Originally formed in Santa Barbara, CA in 2010, the Rainbow Girls have spread their musical wings both internationally and domestically, from busking on the streets of Europe to playing pubs and theaters in the UK, to house concerts, festivals, and shows in the US.

In their short time together they’ve collaborated with some of Canada’s A-list singers and songwriters, including Charlie A’Court from their home province, Chris Kirby, Blake Reid, Andrew Waite, Andrew Sneddon, Nick Earle and more. Stan Rogers

REUBEN AND THE DARK

SAM POLLEY AND THE OLD TOMORROWS

RUBENANDTHEDARK.COM CAN

THEOLDTOMORROWS.COM CAN

Reuben Bullock has the kind of distinctive voice and stellar songwriting that has kept the band Reuben and the Dark on heavy rotation for thousands of fans for many years. Exploding on the indie rock scene in 2013 (although Bullock was writing and recording his own works as early as 2010), they return to us this year in a powerful new collaboration with the Kainai Nation’s Bullhorn Singers. Reuben and the Dark last appeared at the Canmore festival in 2016. “This all began as an impromptu experiment and turned into a beautiful and meaningful experience,” says the Calgary-based Bullock. “We feel grateful to be working with Bullhorn Singers, they bring such power and depth to our music. This truly feels like one of the most powerful songs we’ve made. It feels important.” The song, Timelapse Clouds, marks Reuben and the Dark’s first release of 2022. With rich, haunting harmonies woven into its anthemic compositions, the band currently includes Sam Harrison (guitar/ keys/vocals), Brock Geiger (guitar/keys/vocals), Nathan da Silva (bass/vocals), and Brendan ‘Dino’ Soares (drums). With the collaboration with the Bullhorn Singers, the distinctive throb of the leather drums and the introduction of First Nations harmonies becomes mesmerizing.

How does one land a spot as opening act for a Jim Cuddy Band national tour barely a year after forming a band? Definitely helps if Jim Cuddy is your dad, but no way would he have gotten the gig if he wasn’t up to the task. Obviously he absorbed a lot of lessons during that upbringing. Polley, son of Cuddy and actress Rena Polley, drew deep upon his musical family’s roots when he assembled Sam Polley and the Old Tomorrows in 2017, surrounding himself with musicians he knew have similar musical interests: brothers Tally and Gianni Ferraro (bass and drums), and veteran players, Fraser Melvin (Electric Guitar) and Jeff Giles (Piano/Keyboard). In 2018, they recorded their first EP and then embarked on the cross-country Jim Cuddy Band Constellation tour. They’ve played both festivals and cities throughout Ontario and shortly pre-pandemic finished their debut album, Time Forgot, drawing their sound from 50s and 60s rockabilly licks, old country twang, and Motown swing, blending genres to create an upbeat boogie with groovy hooks. “I wanted to create something people could get up and dance to.”

Apparently the secret to creating a great talent is to expose them to great music from their earliest years. Rising Canadian singer (and “sometimes songwriter”) Shaye Zadravec was steeped in her father’s music from a young age, and it emerges in so much of what she brings to the studio and the stage. Everything from Bobby Darin to Lynn Miles, Mary Margaret O’Hara to Jesse Winchester and Willie Dixon. A girl and her guitar, nothing fancy except the voice that has been described as one of the purest of this generation. On her second and latest album, 2020’s Now and Then, the Calgary singer pays particular homage to Ian Tyson with two covers, Summer’s Gone and Silver Bell, reflecting her respect for the Alberta icon. Apparently the respect is mutual, as Tyson appears on the latter. Some have referenced her as a “throwback” for her simple, pared back sound that reminds you of the days of early Linda Ronstadt and Harry Nilsson (her favourite), performers who rely totally on their voice to command your focus. No big notes, no theatrics, no overwrought Star Search renditions. Let it wash over you, subtly and gracefully. Just pure performance beauty.

If the voice is an instrument, then the Small Glories is an orchestra. A very small orchestra, to be sure, but one with all of the nuances, overlays, underlays and harmonic convergences of a symphony. A folk, roots, rock symphony. Winnipeggers Cara Luft (although she claims a couple of other hometowns) and JD Edwards, possessors of two of the folk world’s most exquisite voices and strings, from claw-hammer banjo to powerhouse guitar, serendipitously came together in 2012 to perform at a civic event. Sorely interrupted by the pandemic, they had to individually and mutually make do with Zoom concerts and small-scale outdoor socially distanced gigs, just to feed the need to play and perform. During the pandemic, however, they continued to rack up awards and accolades for what they produced before the virus hit, including numerous Canadian Folk Music Awards and Western Canadian Music Awards. Sadly, their nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year for Assiniboine and the Red at the 2020 Junos came the same year that event had to be cancelled. Their onstage presence and banter is delicious, reflective of their post-pandemic thirst to get back out there on the road, performing for live audiences.

STEVE POLTZ

SUSAN O’NEILL

POLTZ.COM CAN/USA

SUSANONEILL.IE IRELAND

Buckle up and button down. If you’re not familiar with this gent’s music, you’re in for an awakening. (Prepare to be woke!) Born in Canada and matured in the US, Poltz falls into a grey zone of supremely talented singer/songwriter/guitarist and possibly-off-his-meds comedian. But he’s totally sober. He just possesses a Formula One brain, an insatiable need for live audience interaction and a lens upon the world we have seldom seen before. And the experience is pure magic. The world needs more Steve Poltz. He has the goofy sweetness of an Owen Wilson and the darkly comedic songwriting skills of Warren Zevon. Throw in the astonishingly nimble finger picking skills, he carves his own place in the annals of folk music. A founding member of the semi-legendary indie-rock band The Rugburns, the 60-something Poltz has been pounding the live music circuit since pandemic restrictions began lifting. His relationship with the live audience is his fuel. He’s been described as an “unhinged genius,” “really not normal” and “frenzied, aggressive, hilarious and heartbreakingly sincere.” He’s collaborated with the likes of Danny Michel and Joel Plaskett, Jewel and Anthony da Costa. A one-man force to be appreciated.

Wow wow wow. Ireland’s Susan O’Neill brings us her incomparable vocals and profound songwriting from halfway around the world, and we thank her. Her soulful husky vocals draw comparisons with Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Adele, her words will make you weep. We are one of only three Canadian stops she’s making on a very brief North American tour. (Edmonton and Calgary folk festivals as well.) Based in rural Ennis, Ireland, she often performs as SON and produced a profound collaborative album during the pandemic with Mick Flannery, an album of break-up ballads and bittersweet love songs, universal truths about faltering relationships. Confessional rock that earned some heavyweight fans such as U2s Bono. The album, The Game, was one of Folk Roots Radio’s favourite albums of 2021. The multi-talented O’Neill has a rather unusual arsenal of instruments for a folk musician – guitar, harmonica and trumpet – but weaponizes them all to deliver traditional Irish folk, rock, soul, gospel and blues.

One of Canada’s most enduring and beloved musicians makes a return to the Canmore Folk Fest this year with his eponymous band, almost 10 years after their first appearance. The Jim Cuddy Band, fronted by Cuddy and featuring a core group of outstanding musicians, including Colin Cripps (guitar), Anne Lindsay (fiddle), Joel Anderson (drums), Bazil Donovan (bass) and Steve O’Connor (keyboards), is as known and loved as Cuddy’s other musical project, Blue Rodeo. (Among the many accolades and awards Cuddy has received in his 40-year-career is the Order of Canada in 2013, also awarded to Blue Rodeo co-founder Greg Keelor.) Dubbed “country emo” by one reviewer, the Jim Cuddy Band brings an exuberant blend of high-octane rhythms, trap-you-inyour-seat lyrics and the trademark smoky voice of Cuddy. Their most recent recording, immediately pre-pandemic, is Country Soul, recorded live on the top floor of Cuddy’s barn in southern Ontario to capture those “old barn wood” acoustics. His two-year pandemic hiatus was spent working on new music, as did Keelor, and the result is Blue Rodeo’s 16th studio recording, Many a Mile. And like all touring musicians, the appetite to get back out there in front of live audiences is pretty intense. Expect some serious energy!

“Fearless, fleet-fingered string band … adventurously advancing the high lonesome sound of bluegrass…” “Effortlessly pushing bluegrass back to its earlier roots in Appalachian traditions, while steering old sounds in fascinating new directions.” Fleet-fingered doesn’t even begin to describe this Toronto-based foursome. Formed in 2011 and named for the Slocan Valley in B.C., they’ve scored numerous Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Juno nomination in their devotional pursuit of keeping the traditional music of Appalachia alive and thriving. The group consists of banjo player Frank Evans, guitarist Darryl Poulsen, bassist Charles James, and mandolinist Casey Campbell,. Evans, Poulsen, and James all perform vocals depending on the song. Performing at bluegrass and roots festivals across North America, they’ve earned a reputation for high-energy live shows and profound creativity with an age-old genre. Named 2020 IBMA Momentum Band of the Year Award Winner. Think you don’t like bluegrass music? Think again!

TRÉ BURT

WILLIAM PRINCE

TREBURT.COM USA

WILLIAMPRINCEMUSIC.COM CAN

Once in a generation a songwriter comes along who perfectly captures the anger and frustration of the era, the unjustness and hypocrisy that seems to keep the world from addressing its wrongs. And they manage to channel that frustration into songs that ride the razor’s edge between burning it all down and holding up the mirror. Meet Tré Burt, a Sacramento-based, laser-focused musical philosopher who records with John Prine’s Oh Boy Records. He signed in 2019, the year before COVID claimed Prine, and is only one of two artists to join the label in the last 15 years. Burt’s debut album Caught it From the Rye, released in 2018, was re-released by Oh Boy in 2020 capturing the zeitgeist of the Black Lives Matter movement. A single released that same year, Under the Devil’s Knee, was an incredibly moving protest song written out of anger, tracing the lives of George Floyd, Eric Garner and Breonna Taylor. He writes of the experience as a black man in America because “the personal is political.” Prine would be proud. And so would Dylan.

Listening to Winnipeg singer/songwriter William Prince is a little like sipping a fine, oak-cured scotch … smooth, sultry and addictive if you let it be so. Prince, a member of Manitoba’s Peguis First Nation, made his first appearance on our stage in 2017, the same year his debut album Earthly Days won a Juno for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. He appeared live on the nationally televised awards show to sing one of its tracks, Breathless, for the In Memoriam tribute, which celebrated the iconic Leonard Cohen. The comparisons have been long drawn between Prince and his musical elder. He now has two more albums to his credit, Reliever (2020) and most recently Gospel First Nation, a collection of worshipful, poetic odes to a higher power, the power of nature and the power of love, songs Prince says were 100 years in the making. His honeyed baritone is a voice you will not forget, evoking not just Cohen, but Willie Nelson and Barry White. His lyrics are reminiscent of John Prine, beautiful and haunting, revealing a depth of soul that can be both uplifting and melancholy at once.

CHELSIE YOUNG

DANIELLE DAYTON

JOHN HEWITT

The Canadian music scene welcomes its newest emerging artist, Chelsie Young – originally from the Bigstone Cree Nation in Northern Alberta – she is now making her presence felt in Edmonton, from where she continues to wow audiences everywhere with her natural vocal talent. Chelsie is a singersongwriter with a natural gift for writing meaningful and touching songs. In her spare time, she engages with her thousands of followers on social media by sharing videos of her favourite cover songs. Her songs, and life, touch on the realities many Indigenous women face, such as domestic violence, addiction, depression, suicide, single parenting, family dysfunction, and relationships.

Although she graduated with a teaching degree, Danielle Dayton has been in hot pursuit of her music career for as long as she can recall. She practises her craft daily and has been eagerly awaiting the end of the pandemic so she can release her unbridled energy on stages across Alberta. Engaging, sassy and talented, Danielle Dayton taps into the bluesy side of all of us.

Northern Ontario’s John Hewitt was born the day Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” was left within his grasp. Learning the best of songwriting from his musical heroes, ranging from Dylan to Petty, The Doors to the Grateful Dead, Hewitt has maintained a prolific repertoire through the years. Now making his home in Edmonton, he produces and engineers his own music, releasing an EP and two non-album singles, four music videos and a skit show performed on Facebook Live. He has two 2021 releases, one focusing on his rock and 60’s pop influences and one focusing on his folk/roots influences. Gritty, raw, authentic and captivating, the music of John Hewitt is a feast for the soul.

“I tell performers all the time that I don’t want to hear your song, I want to feel your song. I felt Danielle’s song.” Bill Werthmann (Northern Lights Folk Club)

TRUE BLUE

WYATT C LEWIS

Emerging from the melting pot of Edmonton’s music scene, Kyle Mosuik and Nataya Nolan’s duo embodies everything a fan could crave in a musical act; exquisite vocals, harmonies for days, outstanding musicianship and truly solid songs.

A recent Calgary transplant, Wyatt C Lewis has made an impact with songs built from soaring melodies, railroad-like consistent finger picking paired with quiet, haunting vocals and lyrical phrasing. His dark, rustic tales meld folk and soulful blues to tell tales of love, loss and the journey home. His songs are beautiful, subtle creations that juxtapose emotions, striking imagery and experiences that charm and envelope listeners. With the sweet and intimate EP On a Journey for the Long Run, Lewis shows why CBC Music’s weekly “Reclaimed” series named him “one to watch” in 2021. This thoughtful nêhiyaw recently released a single called “Dancing with Sue” as a warm, huggy dedication to the supportive arts community that he has found in Alberta.

Kyle is a consummate guitarist with versatile vocals and Nataya earned her chops touring and singing backup for her brother Joe (Nolan) and sister Jenie Thai. As sweethearts and soulmates, it’s another match made in heaven and the result is a rare and special rendering of song and soul. Their debut album, True Blue, is soon to be released.

ANDREW IBANEZ

THE CAVE ARCADE

EILEEN & GORD MARCH

Andrew Ibanez has been performing, composing and recording guitar music for over 30 years. Blending a mix of guitar styles from around the world including Latin, Jazz, Rock, Blues and Classical, he creates his own style and sound.

Homegrown indie roots band, The Cave Arcade, drag the tones and guitar themes from spaghetti western scores over which to lay unique and sometimes comedic pulp inspired lyrics. Considering their land locked Canadian roots, it is perhaps ironic that they reach for the west-coast vibes of which their music at times reflects. Laying this over the base of classic folk roots endemic to their home in the Rocky Mountains, creates a unique style.

Gord March is no stranger to the Canmore music scene. He has been playing music in the valley for decades. He performed at the festival many times, both with local favourite Sully’s Garage, who he is a founding member of, and as a singersongwriter. Daughter Eileen, inspired by her father’s musical abilities, took to songwriting in her teens and has not looked back. This father daughter duo is sure to entertain.

KYLE PULLAN

MARI ROSEHILL

THE NICO TOBIAS BAND

Since 2013, Kyle Pullan has been part of the local music community. Bringing bright melodies and percussion on the acoustic guitar, Kyle brings the world of instrumental finger-style guitar to the Bow Valley. Kyle has released four Instrumental Albums and won the Banff Battle of The Bands in 2017 as the first solo act to do so and opened up the competition to more solo acts.

Mari Rosehill reflects on life’s subtleties and expresses it best through song. Ranging from soft, operatic highs, to full low tones, her introspective styled lyrics invite you to take a look into how she thinks. Insecurities that have held her back and beautiful moments that propel her forward. The now sober songstress continues on this search for one’s self and her artistry helps along the way.

Growing out of the MacEwan University music program, The Nico Tobias Band (originally Abbey Rodeo) is fronted by Canmore’s Nico Tobias. An emerging artist bursary from the Town of Canmore launched the band’s recording career. In 2018, they won the Canadian Songwriting Competition for their song “Anthracite”. They have a full-length album No More Mr. Nico Guy and several single releases.

FOLK FEST SUPPORTS CONCERT AT THE GARDENS EVENT AS PART OF INAUGURAL

CANMORE HERITAGE FESTIVAL Thanks to support from the Canmore Folk Music Festival, an evening of free music was hosted at the Northwest Mounted Police Barracks on Main Street in downtown Canmore on July 22. The Heritage Festival was created by the Canmore Museum and executive director Ron Ulrich is excited to bring a new event to the community in July that looks back at the collective past of this special place. Ulrich says music is an incredible medium to communicate through and the goal was to engage with a broader audience in the community than the museum would normally reach to share that passion for heritage. “One of the things I find interesting about musical performances is that a sense of identity and place can also come through with music,” he says. “The lineup for Concert at the Gardens really does give that sense of locality and who we are as a community”.

THE CANMORE FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL PARTNERED WITH THE CANMORE MUSEUM LAST MONTH TO BRING INDIGENOUS MUSIC PROGRAMMING TO THE INAUGURAL CANMORE HERITAGE FESTIVAL

“And who we are as a people, I think that comes through in their music and that is what the Canmore Heritage Festival is about – a celebration of us and who we come from.” The lineup included Wyatt C. Louis, a Cree-Métis singer-songwriter based in Moh’kinstsís (Calgary), as well as local performers Mari Rosehill and Phillip Alexander Nugent. Louis is performing at the Festival this weekend as part of the School of Song lineup, while Rosehill and Nugent are performing on the Mountain FM Pub Stage. The venue was an amazing location to host an intimate outdoor and family friendly concert, with the barracks and its heritage gardens as the backdrop. It was also an excellent way to lead into the 45th annual Canmore Folk Music Festival the next weekend. Festival Director Sue Panning says she was inspired to support the inaugural heritage festival event because of her deep

appreciation for how many musical forms are about telling stories, and that “helps foster an appreciation and understanding of different perspectives.” “It helps build a connection between people and communities” she says. “Indigenous stories have been told throughout history and continue to be told. Listening to those stories is a small step toward Truth and Reconciliation. “The partnership between the Canmore Folk Music Festival and the Canmore Museum gives the opportunity to hear Indigenous stories not only through the music at the festival, but also with the sessions at the NWMP barracks.” The evening of music was part of a weekendlong event celebrating local heritage launched this year by the museum, thanks to partnerships like the one forged with the folk festival. Check out canmoreheritagefestival.com for details about next year’s events. The Canmore Museum presents Indigenous Stories and tipi program at the Northwest Mounted Police Barracks (Main Street and Spring Creek Gate). Traditional knowledge and history presented by Stoney Nakoda interpretive guides share cultural activities and stories. CANMORE FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL FUNDS STAN ROGERS MEMORIAL

Stage improvements PARTNERSHIP WITH MUNICIPALITY MEANS MAIN STAGE’S FUTURE ON SECURE FOOTING

than a local non-profit organization, as it is truly a community amenity.

If, as Shakespeare wrote, all the world is a stage, then it makes sense that a stage that has hosted musicians from around the world has a special place in the hearts of folk festival attendees.

“We have maintained the flooring for as long as possible to extend its life,” says Hanus. “But as we removed the flooring, we started to notice there was rot in the foundation posts right at grade level.”

The Stan Rogers Memorial Stage would not exist if it was not for the Canmore Folk Music Festival. Built in 1983 as a result of the community building leadership of a group of dedicated volunteers. They wanted to honour the quintessential Canadian folk singer after he performed at the event the year before by naming the stage after him. The stage has hosted musical acts like Buffy Ste. Marie, Bruce Cockburn, The Milk Carton Kids, Ruthie Foster, Jim Cuddy, and so many more.

Not only were the posts in bad condition, but the addition to the stage in the 1990s weakened its structural integrity as well. It meant that the project needed additional funding to move forward with repairs.

The population of Canmore was around 4,500 and the coal mine, the main source of income for many in the community, had closed just a few years earlier. With growth in the community, and the annual folk festival, an addition to the stage was constructed in 1995.

While COVID-19 resulted in the cancellation of the in-person 2021 and 2022 festival events, a $50,000 project was approved as part of the municipal capital budget to replace the floor of the stage.

The final price tag for the work ended up totalling $175,000, with a $50,000 contribution from the Canmore Folk Music Festival. Thankfully, due to the incredible foresight and planning of the festival, it had the funds available to invest in the capital work.

A new roof was added onto the stage in 2015. That, along with the work to replace the wooden pillars under the stage with concrete supports, means there is still plenty of life left in the stage. That also means there is time for the community, and the Canmore Folk Music Festival, to begin to create a long-term vision for its future. For Festival Director Sue Panning, the certainty around the future of the stage gives everyone time to think about what the future needs of the festival and the community are before decisions are made about the future of the stage, or its location. “The Stan Rogers stage is an iconic part of the festival, the arts community, and Canmore’s history. We see our contribution as an investment in the future of both the festival and the long-term viability of the arts sector in Canmore. We mindfully set aside some emergency funds for contingencies, and helping to fix the stage was deemed worthy of the investment.”

Around the same time, the festival in partnership with the town built the public washrooms near the stage in Centennial Park. While the festival was the driving force to build the stage and steward for its maintenance over the years, it was eventually recognized as a municipal asset and responsibility. Manager of facilities for the Town of Canmore Stephen Hanus says it makes sense for the local government to insure, maintain, inspect, manage and repair the stage, rather

FOLK FESTIVAL FOUNDER MICHAEL VINCENT REMEMBERED FOR

vision, community building THE COMMUNITY OF CANMORE IS A RICHER PLACE TODAY THANKS TO THE VISION AND WORK THAT MICHAEL UNDERTOOK AFTER MOVING TO THE COMMUNITY IN THE MID-1970S. Michael Vincent was a founding member of not just the Canmore Folk Music Festival in the late 1970s, but he also helped establish the Canmore Artists and Artisans Guild, the Canmore Museum, Pine Tree Players and the Lamphouse Society for the Arts, which would eventually lead to the creation of artsPlace in Canmore. He passed away in November, 2021 and Festival Director Sue Panning says his long-time support and vision as a founder of the festival were key to the success of the event today. “Michael’s legacy lies within so many arts organizations in town,” says festival director Sue Panning. “He had a huge impact on the arts in this community. As one of the founding members of the Canmore Folk Festival, his impact stretches throughout the Bow Valley, Alberta, and well beyond.” Michael’s good works included being chair of the committee that oversaw the 1983 centennial celebration and coordinating the 1988 Winter Olympic pageantry. He also served a term on Canmore town council. His interests were also athletic, with groups like the Canmore Tennis Club, Canmore Little League Baseball and the Mountain Cricket Club owing Michael some degree of credit for their existence. In addition to investing his time in building community, Michael was also a successful artist whose work captured Canmore’s

42

mining history and culture beginning with his realistic pen ink drawings and printmaking, and later through his work with acrylic paintings. Collectors from around the world have acquired his pieces, while he was also featured in exhibitions in England, Bahamas and Canada over the years. Born in Loders, Dorset England, and later raised by his adopted parents on the Isle of Portland in the Atlantic Ocean, Michael was teaching an adult pottery class in the Bahamas when he met Judy Atkinson, from Canmore, Alberta. He immigrated to Canada, relocated to Canmore in 1976 and married Judy. The couple was part of a growing community of like-minded artists and travellers who found themselves in a small mountain coal mining town. This growing community had established a bi-weekly folk music club for several years when Michael arrived. Judy and him had attended the 1977 Bow Valley Folk and Arts Faire at the Lacombe Centre to sell his art as part of an artisan market at the event. “There was a big field and they had a folk festival and crafts all along the perimeter,” says Judy. “Michael set up a booth there as a craftsperson with his drawings at that time. We both just loved it. That was the first time we heard Connie Kaldor, who has been to the folk festival several times here in Canmore.”

She recalls many of the artists and musicians camped overnight and sang around the fire afterwards. The experience inspired Michael to suggest the idea to the folk club, which eventually led to fellow member Pat Farrand successfully securing grant funding from the provincial government to celebrate the firstever Heritage Day holiday in Alberta – the August long weekend – in 1978. The inaugural event was held in an empty meadow next to a run-down red bard, which would later be renovated into the community daycare. A flatbed truck served as the stage, with a banner across the side. In addition to Kalder, the entertainment included Figgy Duff, Valdy, Humphrey and the Dump Trucks, Paul Hann, A Scottish dancing group from Harvie Heights, Ukrainian dancers and dancers from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. Edna Appleby, who would publish Canmore: The Story of an Era a year later, was the master of ceremonies. A small craft village was organized by Michael that year, and food was organized in the community. Judy, a teacher at the time, organized junior high students to help with parking in exchange for a free ticket to the event. She also went down to the Canmore Hotel and had a beer with potential volunteers to recruit them to help set up the stage. As it turns out, approximately 2,000 people

came that day and paid $1.50 to experience an afternoon and evening of music. When all was said and done, the very first folk festival made a small profit of $87. “We were really scared nobody was going to come,” recalls Judy, with a laugh. “We went to Calgary and put-up flyers and posters in hotels and on bulletin boards. We were just amazed that people actually came.”

and even after the event was established, the army of volunteers behind its success continued to build community with the construction of the Stan Rogers Memorial Stage in 1983.

of them,” he says. “He was the king of a guy who was always there to lend not only his hands, but his ideas. It was starting to cook in those days; there were more and more people involved in various arts.”

That includes Sharon Bowie and Ken Rooks, Maureen Brass, Carol McTavish, Ella Montgomery, Ron and Maggie Duggan, Penny Lawson and Kelly Meadows.

A potter, John, had his wares set up on a table for sale at that first festival. It was a seminal moment in the evolution of Canmore’s arts scene. The fact that from its humble beginnings as an idea shared around a kitchen table, it has carved out a space to be successful as a major arts event in western Canada, is a testament to the legacy of all those involved along the way.

Another important aspect of that first event that has been part of the festival’s long history was creating programming specifically for children and families. Judy recalls horses from Johnny Boychuk’s stables were brought in for pony rides.

Former mayor John Borrowman and his wife Lynn moved to Canmore in 1975. He recalls there was not much in the small town of a few thousand people with respect to the arts community, but that was about to change.

The work involved many in the community,

“A lot of things were starting to happen in that era and Michael was involved with most

Please check in with the Community Cruisers with your bike to the right of the main or feel to ask any of our security or traffic volunteers, and they will direct you to those areas. Please lock your bike, as these areas are not patrolled by security staff. Please do not lock your bike to the perimeter fence– it will be removed

EMERGENCIES AND FIRST AID Contact the information booth or a security volunteer. Personnel are on duty for the duration of the festival, located in the field near the main gate.

INFORMATION If you need assistance, ask a festival volunteer. Security personnel can be identified by their red T-shirts. All other volunteers will be wearing blue T-shirts this year.

Inquire at the information booth. All found items should be turned in there. Announcements can be arranged if necessary. If you discover your loss after the festival, or if you haven’t regained your lost item by the end of the weekend, email lostandfound@canmorefolkfestival.com or call the festival office at 403-678-2524.

MERCHANDISE CDs by festival performers, as well as a selection of clothing, sunscreen, lip balm, hats, water bottles and other festival items, are available at the Product Booth. Cash, Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

MISSING KIDS, MISSING PARENTS Wayward children will be taken to the info booth and an announcement will be made from the stage. Parents, take a minute at the gate to write your cellphone number inside your child’s wristband so we can speed up the reunion.

TAXI SERVICE There are two taxi stands for convenience. One is located immediately adjacent to the Main Gate and the other adjacent to the entry/exit gate on Fifth Avenue.

Portable toilets and hand-washing stations are located on the west side of the permanent washrooms, close to the family area. Please leave them as clean as possible. If toilet paper needs to be replenished, please inform a volunteer.

VOLUNTEERS Do you want to help us next year? Join more than 500 friendly, helpful volunteers that help make the Canmore Folk Music Festival as fabulous as it is. Jobs are varied and require a minimum 10-hour commitment over the course of the weekend. We also have numerous jobs that must be done before and after the festival. Email admin@ canmorefolkfestival.com or call 403-6782524. Check out our volunteer section each spring at www.canmorefolkfestival. com for instructions on how to sign-up.

Towards Zero Waste IT’S EASY BEING GREEN Biosphere and Canmore Folk Festival Partner on Towards Zero Waste It’s no secret that events have had an impact on our valley. With an increase in tourism over the years, and an increase in the number of events, minimizing the impact of each event is more important now than ever. That’s why in 2022 we are excited to announce our partnership with the Biosphere Institute! The Biosphere Institute serves as a community hub where citizens can access local environmental information, learn about how to get involved in conservation programs, and build ideas for new community-led initiatives. Together the CFMF and Biosphere plan to not only uphold our environmental legacy but actually improve it!

Our Green Team is responsible for handling compost, festival goers’ “green” education, recycling, and waste management throughout the weekend. Education is key because there is a systematic approach to how we recycle as much as 93 per cent of the waste created during the festival. There are Resource Recovery Stations located on-site, at each, you will learn about the importance of different types of recycling and composting. We take the time to help place items into the right bin, as sorting recyclable materials is the first step. Our Green Team corporate partners are; the Town of Canmore, Canmore Bottle Depot, Bow Valley Waste Commission and Epcor. These partners have worked with the festival

team over the years to help us learn more about composting, recycling, and reducing the amount of garbage that goes into the landfill site. Our Environment team’s goals are to: Minimize garbage coming onto the site by working closely with the vendors and groups to ensure the products they use are recyclable and/or compostable • Maximize the recovery and the recycling of materials on site by defining the various waste streams generated • Engage festival participants at our convenient and accessible recycling stations.

We make foreign exchange simple, affordable, and stress-free for Canadian snowbirds. Competitive exchange rates Simple global money transfers Hands-on support #CanmoreFolkFest
