42O What's

CANNACURIOSITY

anyway? 420 (pronounced four-twenty) is an iconic number in the world of cannabis. Today, 420 marks the day April 20th, when all things cannabis are celebrated around the world.

THE ACTIVISM

T H E H ISTO RY You may be wondering where, why and how 420 came about in the first place. Well, we have to take you way back to 1971. That year, at San Rafael High School, a group of friends heard through the grapevine that the U.S. Coast Guard had hidden a stash of weed in the nearby woods. As the story goes, armed with a crudely drawn map and bored out of their minds, the friends set out to explore the woods every day after school at 4:20pm. They never found the stash, but 4:20 stuck, morphing from a meetup time, to code for all things cannabis. Eventually, through famous people like the Grateful Dead who became interwoven with these infamous friends, the term spread far and wide. Today, 420 is celebrated on April 20th, and 420 has even made its way to legislation with a few cannabis-related bills donning the number.

It's not all fun and games on April 20th. As a counterculture holiday and a global movement, 420 is a call to action for cannabis reform. While it's an opportunity for cannabis users to freely be themselves and celebrate the progress we've made in legalization, it’s also a time used to demand more of the people who write our laws.

THE CELEBRATION There's no wrong way to celebrate 420, but here are some suggestions: Across the U.S. marches and other group gatherings are held every year. Check your local event calendar to see if anything is happening this year. It’s a good day to educate yourself and others on the many benefits of cannabis. If you're stuck at home, support your local dispensary (or another supplier) and relax, you've earned it. 

Cheers to 420! CANNACurious

IF YOU’VE BEEN CONFUSED ABOUT CBD… YOU’RE NOT ALONE! Even though most of us are familiar with the term CBD, many still equate it to marijuana and getting high.

BUT… CBD IS NOT A DRUG, AND IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU HIGH. So, with that one big myth debunked, let’s dig up more myths about CBD and also highlight some facts. But first, here’s a clear definition of CBD to start… CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidoil. The CBD that is now federally legal, thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, is derived from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. Hemp is classified as having less than .3% THC-- the cannabinoid that does cause a psychoactive effect.

ABOUT CBD LIMITED RESEARCH, WANTON DEMONIZATION AND JUST PLAIN IGNORANCE HAVE PROPAGATED MYTHS ABOUT CBD. HERE ARE SOME MYTHS YOU NEED TO KNOW…

1

MYTH

CBD IS A DRUG MEANT TO MAKE YOU HIGH.

CBD is often confused with THC. While they are

both cannabinoids, CBD by itself does not cause a “high.” According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

2

CBD IS ADDICTIVE.

Due to the body's more subtle reaction

to CBD, it is not considered an addictive substance. That being said, it's still to be used in moderation. While CBD products are often a cleaner alternative to conventional

MYTH

THERE'S NO EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THE USE OF CBD AS ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE.

With each passing year, more and more research occurs investigating the health benefits of CBD. With looser regulations and a shift in public opinion, the general curiosity around CBD is at an all time high. From the treatment of epilepsy to inflammation-related conditions, CBD clinical trials are occurring to uncover its vast therapeutic applications. This is without considering the use of CBD and hemp in ancient cultures and traditional practices around the world. 8

NATUROPATHIC HEALER:

DR. KIMANI

A naturopathic doctor, certified yoga instructor, and Stanford graduate, Dr. Kimani Borland focuses on women’s health through a whole self approach - body, spirit, mind, emotions, and environment. She offers in-person consultations, as well as telemedicine health chats, and yoga classes broadcasted around the globe. Here’s what Kimani told us about cannabis and CBD for wellness… HOW WERE YOU INTRODUCED TO CANNABIS AS MEDICINE? Kimani: So, because of how we were raised - with mommy and daddy as Rastafarians - that’s what we lived and that’s how we are. It was just normal. You have some mint tea and you have some ganja on the table - it was just normal. I was aware that it wasn’t normal outside of the household. We had issues around that. It was very commonplace for discrimination [against Rastafarians] to be out in the open. So anyway, I was introduced to cannabis as what it is - as a sacrament, recreation, used as a medicine, all of the ways that you could use it. It just wasn’t a big deal. Then going to school and learning about herbal medicines in the ways that I did, cannabis was just another one of those herbs. 16

When using cannabis, and I didn’t learn this until after a couple of bad experiences, you have to be really careful about the strains and the dosage that you’re using. There are herbs that we can use daily - most herbs we can use daily. But cannabis, because of how potent it is, can be used in singular, small doses and it would have its effect. Firstly, I’d say start with CBD. If you’re newer or you don’t have a lot of experience with cannabis, then start with CBD. It doesn’t carry the jarring effects

Next, when you’re comfortable experimenting, get familiar with different strains of cannabis. I’d prescribe different herbs for depression and

First, indulging in a heady Indica was not a sexy move, at least for me. I don’t think it ever really led to an evening of lovemaking. Instead, it led to me closing my eyes the moment my head hit the pillow and mumbling sorry, babe to my (now) husband. So, that was a no-go. But, I did have one of the best nights of sleep I’d had in awhile. I must be doing something wrong, I thought. A week or so later I tried a new approach and learned that it was a Sativa-hybrid that really took the cake. While I still felt heavy and relaxed, I was awake and alert. Often during sex I am bombarded with distracting thoughts that take me out of the moment. Did I lock the car? When is that article due? How do I look in this lighting? But, those thoughts felt quiet this time. I was focused and present in a shared experience with the man I loved. And most of all: I was having fun! The freedom from my nagging thoughts allowed for just an overall good time. I started to understand what all the hubbub was about. Still, my exploration didn’t stop there.

THE WINNING CBD & SEX COMBO I heard about CBD lube before and figured I should add it to the mix. You know… for science. According to Dr. Kecia Gaither, “CBD is thought to decrease inflammation, increase blood flow and help with muscle relaxation, which might make CBDinfused lubricants a reliable option for women who have pain during intercourse.” While I am privileged in that I don’t often experience pain during sex, I do often have difficulty generating enough

and could use some additional support in relaxing into the experience. Right on time, I was gifted with a box of CBD wellness products as a wedding gift: CBD lube, CBD suppositories, and a CBD tincture. This was truly where the game changed for me. While I enjoyed my explorations with the Sativa-dominant flower, I was still a bit of a novice THC user. These CBD

products offered me the ability to experience sensory stimulation without the altered mental state. In the end, what I discovered was how intricately connected cannabis use is with our sexual experiences - whether for the good or the bad - and that, how that experience is altered, is different for every person. Most important in all of this is comfort and safety. I recommend exploring first through self-touch and masturbation if you don’t have a partner(s) that you trust wholeheartedly. It does no one good to explore substances you are unfamiliar with, in an unfamiliar setting, with an unfamiliar person. That’s a recipe for a rather unpleasurable time. -------------------------------A M A N D A F I S H E R - K AT Z - K E O H A N E I S A W R I T E R A N D O U T D O O R S W O M A N W I T H A PA S S I O N F O R M A K I N G GLOBAL CHANGE. W HAT IS IT? Recently we’ve seen the rise of delta-8 THC making its way across social media. It seems like more and more cannabis enthusiasts are intrigued by this ‘new form of THC. For those new to the world of cannabis science, the THC we know is called delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol. It is a phytocannabinoid produced by the marijuana cultivar Sativa, and it’s responsible for the psychoactive effects we associate with cannabis use. Delta-8 THC, on the other hand, is a by-product of delta-9 THC. In other words, when a plant metabolizes delta-9 THC (think of it as a plant version of digestion), you get small, minuscule amounts of delta-8 THC. This means that delta-8 THC is indeed a psychoactive compound, but it’s a lot less potent when compared to delta 9.

H OW LON G D O E S IT L A ST? While delta-8 THC does get you high, it’s essential to keep in mind that many factors determine how long its effects will last. For example, a veteran marijuana user who uses potent cannabis (containing D9 THC) may find that the impact of a delta-8 high only lasts 30 to 40 minutes. On the other hand, a person trying D8 products for the first time may notice the effects lasting for more than 60 to 90 minutes.

What are the effects?

Yes, delta-9 THC can indeed make a person high. In fact, that’s why they’re so popular. As delta-8 THC shares a similar chemical structure to that of delta-9 THC, it can elicit similar psychoactive effects. Now, the psychoactive effects of this cannabinoid will not be as pronounced as the delta-9 THC. But, it can indeed produce some reliable effects. According to our research, delta-8 THC tends to result in a more cerebral high characterized by bouts of euphoria, joy, and anxiety relief.

H OW DO E S I T WO R K? The endocannabinoid system has two major receptors, CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are distributed throughout the central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are found throughout the peripheral nervous system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the immune cells. So, how does delta-8 THC affect these receptors? Well, delta-9 THC is a partial agonist for both CB1 and CB2 receptors. In other words, its high affinity towards these receptors tends to result in the mediation of one’s mood, consciousness, ability to feel pain, etc. However, the effects produced by delta-8 products differ from delta-9, as delta-8 THC has a stronger affinity towards the CB2 receptors. On the other hand, delta-8 THC binds weakly to CB1 receptors.

AMBER SENTER

AMBER SENTER has established herself as a powerful force and major disruptor in the cannabis industry. The former marketing executive has founded and now leads multiple cannabis companies, at every level in the industry. Amber is the founder and CEO of the company Breeze Distro, which supports cannabis companies in scaling their supply chain management. She’s also the founder of Shady Pines Box Club, a cannabis delivery service. She’s the co-founder of EquityWorks! Incubator, a first of its kind workforce development program, recruiting, training and placing social equity workers in the cannabis industry. And, she’s also a co-founder and executive director of SuperNova Women.

FOR BLACK & BROWN PEOPLE

SuperNova is a 501c3 organization that empowers Black

and Brown people to become self-sufficient shareholders in the cannabis industry. The goal is to lower barriers of entry, whether it’s at the ownership level or starting a

access to grants, 0% interest loans, legal and technical assistance, and shared manufacturing kitchens. Impressed by SuperNova’s ability to make change at such a high level, I ask her what advice she has for others who might want to advocate for similar legislation in their state. “It’s interesting, because people think they have to go to the state and deal with all these bureaucrats that they’ve never really talked to before, when in reality you have to start at the local level. It’s much easier if you can have a lot of change at the local level,” she responds. “That’s really where all the magic happens. They’re super accessible”

important aspect of Supernova's offerings.. “There are the big retailers and they in turn work with the big distributors, the big manufacturers, and the big cultivators. Where does that leave all these small diverse businesses? We are working to make sure that we are

for everybody. We do that through advocacy, education

networking events in person before COVID.”

“Before legalization, Black and Brown people were taking risks to sell cannabis and going to jail because of it disproportionately. It’s written all over the data… You are ten times more likely to be arrested for cannabis if you’re Black. Black people are always targeted, because the system is racist, but then also we were the ones bringing in the weed. There’s a good chance that prior to legalization, you were buying weed from a Black or Brown person, and that’s not the case now. That’s just crazy, and that’s not right.”

Prior to the pandemic, SuperNova hosted in-person events aimed at disrupting the old boys network. Most notably was their big party during the middle of the annual National Cannabis Industry Association conference in San Jose, CA. “We had 400 people come to our party every year. We called it the ‘Urban Mixer’. We make sure everyone’s having a good time and smoking weed, and we make sure people of all levels are talking to each other, in hopes that the bigger operators can talk to smaller operators and cut

SuperNova was influential in helping California to fund

CA N N AC U R I O U S M AG.C O M

SHARON KEVIL

How did you get into something so…. “Niche?” Sharon Kevil laughs as she finishes the question for me.

SHARON

is in the business of producing

state-of-the-art furniture that you can control with your phone for the explicit purpose of protecting your cannabis stash. Yeah, niche just about works. Well, she explains, it’s the natural outcome of a problem-solving mom stumbling on her sneaky toddler taking the first free opportunity to raid the cabinets looking for sweet treats. Now Sharon, not new to the stash life, kept the good stuff somewhere secret, but this got her thinking, “A kid doesn’t know what the

letters THC mean.” They see a gummy, they eat a gummy. Cannabis isn’t yet legal in her hometown of Milwaukee,

Wisconsin, she thought to herself, but what about places where cannabis is more common? How many accidental ingestions happen in somewhere like Colorado? The answer… A lot.

WHAT STUDIES SAY In 2016, the New York Times reported a study published by the JAMA Pediatrics Medical Journal, which found that the rates of cannabis exposure in young children increased 150 percent since 2014. More than double. That doesn’t even consider teenagers stealing from their parents. So, maybe a stash box just doesn’t cut it in 2021. Cannabis is more than just rolling a joint. There are all sorts of infused drinks and candies, expensive breakables like bongs, and CBD tinctures and topicals. Sure, you can always use a metal tin and hide it somewhere, but we deserve chic furniture too. Sharon built Forti Goods to fill this void. It’s a line of sleek high-end furniture with secret spaces, specifically created to stash cannabis. Forti Goods provides immediate protection. No one gets in unless you want them to. Each piece of furniture has a digital remote control that works on all your devices, so there’s no anxiety about forgetting a key or combination. You can share access, and even do it temporarily if you’re renting a space or you have company.

MINDFUL FURNITURE Sharon aptly refers to the line as “slow furniture.” When you buy a piece of Forti Goods furniture, you should expect it to last. “If you want, you can pass it down to your children and they can keep cannabis out of their children’s hands,” she jokes on our call. Forti Goods only uses sustainably sourced and harvested materials, and produces and ships only within the US. Sharon is too aware of the corners that large firms cut trying to save on production costs, and she’s aware of the tax that has on the environment. “If the world’s ocean freights were a country, they’d be the 5th largest emitters of greenhouse gases,” Sharon says. She has seen what the industrial process looks like and she wants none of it for Forti Goods.

Outside of just the environment, Sharon also considers her employees. She

openly

acknowledges

the

brand’s current price point isn’t very accessible. While she’s brainstorming ways to bring that down, she refuses to compromise her workers in the process. “All our workers are paid a living wage. People need jobs and need to be able to live without working five jobs,” she says. This is the core of Forti Goods. Forti: from the latin fortes, means strong and powerful - words you’d want associated with your furniture. But, to Sharon, her furniture is only as strong as the people who build it. CHECK

WHAT MAKES UP THE CANNABIS PLANT?

When we think of the cannabis plant, those big finger-like leaves are likely what come to mind first. However, it’s the actual ‘flower’ - those densely packed, aromatic buds - that contain the majority of the benefits we obtain from the plant.

HERE’S A LOOK AT THE ACTUAL A N A T O M Y O F T H I S A M A Z I N G P L A N T. . .

FLOWER

SUGAR LEAVES These are the small leaves that grow between the buds. They are usually saved as ‘trim’ and can be used to make edibles, oils and extracts.

TRICHOMES

These are the tiny blanket of crystal resin on the cannabis flower. These clear bulbous globes contain aromatic oils called terpenes, as well as therapeutic cannabinoids like THC and CBD.

The flowers or ‘buds’ of a cannabis plant are the fruits of the plant. They only grow on female plants (yes, there are male and female cannabis plants!) and have to be dried before consuming. They are rich with the cannabinoids and terpenes that cause the ‘high’ or offer health benefits.

FAN LEAVES These are the large, iconic leaves of the cannabis plant. They carry very little cannabinoids (CBD or THC, aka the good stuff) and are usually discarded.

THERE ARE FEW BIGGER WAKE-UP CALLS IN LIFE THAN A CANCER DIAGNOSIS. IF LOSING A JOB, OR A PET IS A SPEED BUMP, THEN CANCER IS GOING INTO A TAILSPIN. WHEN CANCER COMES KNOCKING, NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE OR WHERE YOU ARE IN YOUR LIFE, YOU HAVE TO MAKE A DRASTIC CHANGE TO YOUR DAY-TO-DAY TO SURVIVE. JENNIFER ARGIE KNEW THIS. Diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago, she

Argie also says she has an aversion to opioids (most painkillers), an affliction so miserable that she's opted for a natural birth on three separate occasions. There was no way she was going to put herself through that hell, she recalls, there had to be a better way.

FOR ARGIE, THE ANSWER WAS CBD. CBD is one of the 110+ chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. Studies in Israel dating back 40 years have found it to be useful in treating everything from anxiety and pain to assisting women in labor. At the time of looking, there were next to no papers on the benefits of CBD in the US, at least none that Argie could find. Even now, the FDA prohibits any official recommendations of products containing CBD as a therapeutic medicine. Argie describes her current lifestyle as a high CBD diet… And make no mistake, IT IS a lifestyle.

"I needed to find ways to not think of it as a medicine,"

she says. For her, it had to be easy and routine. So, she started with everyday use through food. "Food was more gentle than swallowing a pill."

“I already knew if I was giving it to myself, I wanted to give it to the world," she says. Argie quickly recognized the potential of CBD. Already an entrepreneur, previously designing children's furniture, it wasn't hard for her to pivot to

her current business, Jenny's Baked at Home. The shift in careers felt natural, as growing up she had never been far from either food or nature. A second generation American, Argie recalls her grandfather, a Greek restaurateur during our call. She also remembers spending holidays on her uncle's farm in Southern Missouri. Starting out hosting dinner parties, Argie would create bespoke meals for guests, combining CBD with known natural foods that help alleviate and treat their conditions. She used, and still uses, CBD more like a supplement than an ingredient in its own right. Using the CBD infused coffee beans, as an example, the CBD allows for faster and more efficient absorption of the antioxidants already present in coffee. Through these parties, she has helped people suffering with various illnesses, all reporting back massive improvements to their quality of life. When asked about the stigma of the cannabis plant

CBD FOR PUP HEALTH! A DOG MOM SHARES HER STORY. BY NICANOR GORDON

Kathy Rivera knows the difference between

surviving and living, & while her dog, Browny Dash, was on a popular conventional drug, she knew he was not living a good life. Kathy is a yoga and breathwork practitioner and the founder of Tiny Warrior Wellness, and her Yorkie, Browny Dash, came into her life seven years ago in a bit of a state. Recovering from head trauma and an amputated paw, poor Browny was prescribed phenobarbital - the strongest antiseizure medication a dog can take. Common

It took a few trial and errors, but eventually she got the dosage for Browny just right. Now, Browny is 11 years old… That’s
