It was the biggest weekend Canungra has ever seen with the Canungra Show on Saturday 26th August and Canungra Hotel Rodeo on Sunday 27th August The two major events, held by the Canungra AH&I Society, were moved to a single weekend when safety concerns due to wet weather forced the postponement of the Canungra Hotel Rodeo. The Show was again stretched over Moriarty Park and Canungra Showground, making room for more exhibits at both locations. There was a huge display of vintage cars and machinery at Moriarty Park, as well as a vintage market and food vans. The Fine Arts Pavilion (Moriarty Park Hall) was full, with high quality exhibits in an ideal location. Canungra Showground was host to the carnival rides, woodchop and horse and stud beef cattle competitions. The main pavilion held several new competitios which were very successful, especially the decorated cakes and dark rich fruit cake. Money from the evening competitions the Canungra and District Community Bank Tractor Pull, Aussie Lifestyle Properties Dunny Derby and Canungra Dental Bubble Football, was donated to community organisations including Canungra Owls Soccer Club and Turning Canungra Pink. The Show also featured the biggest fireworks display Canungra has ever seen, thanks to sponsor Canungra Rise. Rain in July was not the first hurdle the Society faced for the Rodeo, after severe flooding in the arena in March and the death
for
Canungra
The Canungra Show Woodchop featured some new classes and increased prizemoney for competitors,
last year of the Society’s Rodeo Co-ordinator, Terry Sharland. Terry was remembered on the day of the Rodeo with a minute’s silence and a moving tribute during the afternoon. Competitor and 2017 Rodeo Queen, Kristy Nagle said Canungra is her favourite rodeo in Queensland. “Canungra Rodeo has alway treated me well. This year I had a little bad luck in the barrel race, but a win in the Rodeo Queen Quest. I have competed at rodeos all over Australia and in five different countries and Canungra Rodeo is up with the best!” she said. Organisers said both days were very successful, and were grateful for the support of the many volunteers who came and helped
cleaning up early on Sunday morning to get ready for the Canungra Hotel Rodeo. Show Secretary, Keer Moriarty said the Society was also assisted by a work team from Palen Creek Correctional Centre. “This is the second year Palen Creek have helped with our Show and Rodeo,” she said. “They helped with a lot of the set up and clean up for both days. They were a great team of guys and really, without their assistance we would struggle to run our events.” “I would like to thank everyone who helped out, whether for an hour or all day, every little bit helps,” she said. New Playground For DJ Smith Park
Work will soon begin on a new playground in DJ Smith Park, Canungra. Cr Greg Christensen said Council plans to deliver six new playgrounds over the next two years. “These six will be followed by other locations in coming years as part of our commitment to the community. Council’s investment in playgrounds aligns with the shared Community Plan vision for the Scenic Rim as a region of healthy, engaged and resourceful communities which enjoy relaxed living and a rural lifestyle,” he said. It is anticipated that the new playground will be completed before Christmas 2017. The main play structure will be the first design combination of its kind in Australia. The tree house design incorporates a large custom tower, tube swirl slide, two swoosh spiral slides and rock climbing structures, connected by bridges. Other playground amenities will include a double bay swing - including two single seat swings and a giant birds’ nest swing; a crawl-through log tunnel and custom log steppers; and a Global Motion rotating climbing frame.
A new playground is soon to be built at DJ Smith Park
Council Notices Free Tree Program Free trees will be available to residents of SRRC as part of Council’s Free Tree Program on Saturday 2 September 2017. Residents must present their Free Tree Voucher (delivered with their July 2017 rates notice) in order to collect their free trees. Trees will be distributed at Main St, Tamborine Mountain between the hours of 8am and 12noon.

Game On For Be Healthy And Active
The race is on for Scenic Rim sport and recreation clubs, community organisations and health professionals interested in providing a program or activity in Council’s 2018 Be Healthy and Active line-up. Expressions of interest are now open and those wishing to be involved in the program have until 29th September to put their hand up to be part of next year’s 12-week program of free and low-cost activities to be run across the Scenic Rim. Mayor Greg Christensen said there would be added incentive to the 2018 Be Healthy and Active program through the introduction of a ‘games card’ as the program of activities coincides with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April 2018. “This overlap will no doubt further ignite interest in sport, fitness and healthy lifestyle choices,” he said. “The 2017 Be Healthy and Active program was our biggest and best ever and our goal is to raise the bar even higher in 2018. This year, residents of all ages and abilities made the most of free and low-cost activities ranging from abseiling to Zumba.” Participants included 80-year-olds who enjoyed the Walk, Jog, Run program, and parents and children who reconnected with each other and nature through bushwalks and other outdoor activities. “As well as outdoor sporting and recreational activities, the Be Healthy and Active program included indoor pastimes and information sessions such as the Savvy Scenic Rim community forums and health and nutrition seminars,” Cr Christensen said.” A number of activities featured in the 2017 Be Healthy and Active program such as the Aqua Bootcamp at Beaudesert swimming pool - proved so popular they are likely to become regular features of the community calendar. Service providers, community groups, sport and recreation clubs and individuals interested in providing a program or activity in the 2018 Be Healthy and Active Program should visit Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/healthy-andactive-community or contact Council’s Healthy and Active Officers on 5540 5111.
Community Grant Boost Thirty-three Scenic Rim community organisations will share in Council funding in the latest round of Community Grants. Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Virginia West said funding provided in the first round of the 2017-18 program would support groups and organisations which helped to enrich the life of Scenic Rim communities. “All of these groups and organisations, many of which rely mostly on volunteers, make an invaluable contribution to community life across our region,” Cr West said. “Such organisations represent vital threads in the social fabric of our towns and villages and their contribution to their local communities helps to make our region such a great place to live.”
COMMUNITY GRANTS ROUND 1 2017-18
Local groups who received funds in this round included: • Canungra Hang Gliding Club - Host two national sporting competitions and turfing • Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Christmas community function • Scenic Rim Wildlife Rescue Rehabilitation and Rescue - Vehicle upgrades/signage and new computer

Simon Laws Sky House is part of the exhibition
Exhibition on Sustainable Living
It will be open house in the Scenic Rim next month for an exhibition for everyone with an interest in history, architecture and sustainable living. Home: A Look at Sustainable Living, has challenged emerging architects, designers, builders and visionaries to offer their perspectives on how a small rural region meets the challenge of change to develop resilient, liveable homes and communities that reflect the local environment and history. The exhibition opens at The Centre Beaudesert on Friday 8th September and continues until 13th December, opening a window to Indigenous heritage, historic homesteads, humble cottages and 21st century living. Many architectural gems that lie hidden from view within the Scenic Rim landscape will be captured through photographs, documenting the buildings as well as the visionary architects who have produced them. Griffith University architecture students, under the direction of Dr Henry Skates, have also risen to the challenge and will exhibit tiny house designs from their design studio project, Bridging the Divide. Three celebrated Australian architects - Gabriel Poole, Lindsay and Kerry Clare and Peter Stutchbury - have been asked to exhibit examples of their work recognised for its sustainable attributes. Home: A Look at Sustainable Living opens with a panel discussion between architects Lindsay Clare, Emma Scragg, Scenic Rim builder Rod Andersen and Council’s Planning Manager Scott Turner at 6.30pm on Friday 8th September. It continues until 13th December and includes a panel discussion, centred on the theme of sustainability, involving eminent architects, builders and planners on Saturday 7th October as well as historic and open house trails. There’s an open invitation to the exhibition opening, with rsvp by phoning 5540 5050 or emailing thecentre@scenicrim.qld.gov.au.
The Shoe Vault New in store now!
Many years ago, timber was felled and milled to make the Canungra Uniting Church building used for Sunday services today. There were Methodist services in the area back as far as the 1880’s. In a grassy sheltered place, not far from Canungra Creek, the timber church saw families grow, marry, and grow again. In the 1950’s the church was rebuilt on the site where it now stands in Appel Street. There is something about the timber and architecture of those days. It has a beauty of its own. Of course, the key thing about a church is not its history and architecture, but its relevancy. A church is nothing but a religious club if it is irrelevant to modern society. Holding on to methodologies and traditions of the past is almost diametrically opposed to the spirit of the fathers of the Uniting Church, John Wesley, John Knox and Robert Browne. In their day they were radical, modern, relevant and powerful. People loved the vibrancy and thrill of hearing the Bible explained in ways that really meant something. It is easy to lose relevancy in a modern world and yet the Bible provides wonderful answers to the questions of life. It still holds the keys to questions we all have. So how do we stay exciting and truly relevant. This is the greatest challenge of the church today. In view of that challenge Canungra Uniting has launched U-Nite, a get together on a Friday night. This service is contemporary, relevant, open and different. You may want to come on a Friday even if you attend other good churches in our region. It may simply be an opportunity to be with people pursuing God. Of course, if you have a good church we encourage you to support your minister and be a blessing in the place you call home, but if you want to do something encouraging and meaningful on a Friday night then check U-Nite out.

Scarecrow Festival’s 10th Anniversary
Keep the weekend of 15th to 17th September free. It’s on again, the fabulous Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival. This is the 10th Anniversary and the celebrations will be huge, the 17km Scarecrow Trail across the mountain plateau will be lined with over 200 Scarecrows. Hayden has decided that there will be a fun Scavenger Hunt added to this year’s trail as well as a ‘Shop and Win’ Scarecrow Competition with loads of prizes to be won. Following last year’s successful Festival Fun at the Sportsground Complex in Long Road on Tamborine Mountain, this year it will be even bigger and better. On Saturday 16th September Design Collective Markets will be co-ordinating the Sportsground event around a hundred stallholders, Face Painting, Pig Races, Baby Animal Farm, Pony Rides and loads of family entertainment, all for a ‘gold coin’ entrance fee. The biggest surprise this year will be Hayden’s marriage. Everyone is invited to the ‘Married at First Sight’ Wedding Ceremony to be performed by a local celebrant on Saturday at the Sportsground Festival. Entries in the Poetry Competition and in the Children’s Colouring Competition will be on display at Little Miss Marie in Long
Road. The fun continues throughout the weekend with Buskers and other entertainment performing in Main Street, and along the Gallery Walk. Fresh local produce will be on sale at the Green Shed at the Showgrounds and at local farm gates throughout the weekend.
The entertainment continues on Sunday at the Fortitude Brewery/Witches Chase Venue from 3pm with the Awards Ceremony when the winners in each category will be awarded their prizes. For more information visit the Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Fesitval Facebook page.

Spring
Orchid
and
Foliage
Show
By Peter Rice – Show Secretary, Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society Inc. In less than two weeks the Spring Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants will be underway. This Show will be held over the weekend of 9th and 10th September in the Canungra School of Arts Hall from 8am until 3pm on Saturday and from 9am until 2pm on Sunday, with admission for adults only $3. Springtime is when native orchids are at their best, but this does not mean that there will only be natives on display. There will be Vandas and Cymbidiums and Cattleyas as well, depending on the species that have taken advantage of the mild winter. Spring is also the time of our very large king or rock orchids, Dendrobium speciosum, and there should be a magnificent display of these, which are native to our surrounding national parks and rain forests but never flower as well in their natural surroundings as they do in captivity. Spring is also the flowering time of the smaller and finer Dendrobium kingianum, the floral symbol of the BDOFS. This orchid is found in huge numbers in our area.
The Spring Orchid and Foliage Show is on the weekend of 9th and 10th September
There will be plenty of orchid and foliage plants grown by members on sale but you have to be there first thing on Saturday morning to get the pick of these. There will also be a trade table selling orchids and foliage plants grown by a commercial grower as well as a trade table selling crafts, jams and cakes, the proceeds from sales going to the local Church Guild. Orchid
growing accessories not readily available to the home enthusiasts will also be for sale. An experienced grower will speak on Saturday morning on “The Basics of Growing Orchids” at 9.15am and 11am on Saturday and 10.30am on Sunday. Drop in and get advice on orchid and foliage plant growing from some of the best. It would be great to see you there.

Authors at Canungra Books
Canungra Books and Art hosted their first book launch on Sunday 20th August with award-winning Brisbane children's book author Karen Tyrrell. Bookshop owner Jan McGregor said the morning was lots of fun. “We are planning to host an event every four to six weeks with different themes or authors,” said Jan. "The children"s section is very popular and we now carry a range of new books by local authors and look forward to expanding this section of the shop".

Thank you
From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Thank You I’ve had a busy couple of weeks. One of those times when sleep seems a distant memory and time to myself is not even on the radar! Helping with the Canungra Show and Rodeo, as well as Turning Canungra Pink has been a bit of a stretch but the Show and Rodeo went well (I think), thanks to a great team of people. I want to personally thank all the volunteers, from the people on the Committee to the people who do bits and pieces to help out. It all makes a huge difference and brings the events together for everyone to enjoy. Having the two events on the one weekend was a big ask and our community stepped up to help out where it was needed. We absolutely could not have done it without the help of work teams from Palen Creek Correctional Centre. These guys helped with the set up for about two weeks leading up to the Show and Rodeo and with the clean up. Their assistance was invaluable and we would struggle to hold the events without them. Of course, all the hours of work impacts on the people around me and I want to thank the people who have helped with the paper this month, especially Lee McKenzie McKinnon, Steve Fitchett and Donna Tunbridge for Show and Rodeo photos; Bren Dalby who is the journo of the month and the advertisers who have been very patient and understanding. Most of all I need to thank my family - Ben, Heather and Sophie - who have hardly seen me in the last six weeks. I couldn’t do it without you.
Dear Keer I am writing this letter on behalf of the Beechmont Tennis Club. The Beechmont Tennis Club has come a long way in the past few years thanks to the improvements undertaken at the Club. This has not come by chance, and is a reflection of the Club’s hard working committees in recent times. The funds required to improve the facilities and programs of the Club have been gratefully received. The Club has been supported by the Scenic Rim Regional Council, the Queensland Government, the Nerang RSL and Memorial Club, and by the Bendigo Community Bank in Canungra. Many thanks goes to the Scenic Rim Regional Council which has consistently supported the Club with funds to purchase a ball machine, funds to purchase and install a new water tank, pump and UV filter to supply the Club with clean water. The Club, through its coach, Brett Day, has been the recipient of Scenic Rim Regional Council Be Healthy and Active grants which have been used to subsidise the Club’s very active Cadio Tennis fitness program. The Club has also received funds from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to install a grass court, funds from the Nerang RSL and Memorial Club for the purchase of a new tennis net, and funds from the Volunteer’s grant to purchase equipment for the Club and its members. The Club’s members have also raised funds from Bunnings BBQs and the Election Day cake stall. These funds have provided members and others in the community to enjoy excellent facilities whilst maintaining a minimal fee structure for members. The Tennis Club now enjoys junior coaching, private coaching, Cardio Tennis, adult coaching and organised social tennis events. Other organisations on Beechmont have been the beneficiaries of these improvements, notably the Beechmont Netball Club and Beechmont Playgroup, the Kookaburras. Osteopath at Canungra Beauty Osteopath - John-Paul Lo Giudice has hit the ground running this week at Canungra Beauty and Acupuncture. He is transitioning his practice from Murwillumbah and joining his wife, Sammy Lo Giudice, also an Osteopath at the Clinic. John-Paul is excited to be a part of the local health support team, and hopes to make a meaningful contribution over the coming years as he and his family make Canungra their home. Osteopathy is about treating the whole body, not just one particular area. If someone comes in presenting with back pain, it could be coming from somewhere else in their body, for example a strained knee, and their back was the last point of resistance. However, someone else presenting with the same back pain could have imbalanced hips. Every person is unique, and treatments need to be tailored to suit each patient, their concerns, and any discomfort they may be feeling. John-Paul will always individualise the treatment to the needs of you and your body. John-Paul also enjoys lecturing at Southern Cross University on the Gold Coast in Health and Human Sciences. He is available for Osteopathic consultations on Mondays between 7am-5pm at 34 Christie Street, Canungra. Please phone 0423 957 850 to make an appointment. Private Health rebates and GP Chronic Health Care Plans apply.
Canungra Heritage CANUNGRA pOlICe STATION
By Joyce Libke The Police Lock -up continued: I had one response to to my plea in August’s Canungra Times’ re the use of the small buildings behind the Canungra Police Station. 1 The eastern building was a store room for the feed for the Police horse and cow [1940s]. As the 1916 Police transport was by horse that was an essential part of the original station. 2 During the 1940’s there was a local man [who would have been known as “disabled” today - 2017] living in a hut not far from our present day water treatment plant. He used to catch and cage native birds. Every so often the local policeman would put him in the “lock up”. This enabled an off-sider to go to the hut and let some of the birds fly free. Meanwhile, at the Police Station, Alf would be cleaned up, provided with some new clothes and be well fed for a few days. On returning to his “home” he was never aware that any birds had escaped?? Country Police work?? [I do remember at that time being told the hut was lined with piles of newspapers stacked floor to ceiling?] If there is anyone who remembers being told about the use of the “lock-up” the Canungra & District Heritage Society would be very keen to speak to you. Please get in touch with Joyce Libke by phone 5543 5212 or email djlibke@bigpond.com.

Tamborine Mountain’s Main Street gateway. Council is calling for submissions from artists to create a visual landmark aligned with the existing signage.
Artists For Village Greens Gateway
Cheryl Davies - Licensee
33 Christie St, Canungra. Phone: 5543 5228
Council is seeking submissions from artists to create a landmark work that will provide a gateway to Tamborine Mountain’s Village Greens project. Up to three artists or artist teams will be selected to develop and present designs for concepts from which Council will select works to be commissioned. The commissioned work is to be completed and installed by 1 March 2018, in time for the Queen’s Baton Relay on Tamborine Mountain. Mayor Greg Christensen said the Main Street village was at the heart of the Tamborine Mountain community and the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative aimed to make it pulse with life. “The entry statement artwork should act as a wayfinder, a visual marker that draws pedestrian and vehicular traffic into Main Street to discover the unique spaces over the rise,” he said. “The artwork should be contemporary, innovative and complement the revitalised streetscape with a unique aesthetic signature that interprets the character of Main Street and the spirit of Tamborine Mountain.” Key considerations in the design of the gateway artwork should be the ongoing maintenance of the site and its individual elements which must be robust, durable and appropriate for their location. The full Public Art Brief can be viewed at www.liveatthecentre.com.au Artists have until 18th August to lodge their submissions with Council, by email at mark. pa@scenicrim.qld.gov.au or in person at Council’s Administration Building, 82 Brisbane Street, Beaudesert. Those who are shortlisted will then have three weeks to create their concept before the designs go on display at Tamborine Mountain Library for two weeks, from 21st September, for community feedback.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
ekkA pROMOTION
Council again hosted a stand at the EKKA alongside neighbouring council areas to promote our magnificent landscape, food and wine production and tourist experiences. It is always a very busy fortnight with all councillors and the executive team working alongside officers. This year the “carrot bags” were again in high demand and interest strong in all we had to offer.

Council has now completed its assessment of the road, bridge and culvert network and submissions are being prepared and lodged with the QRA (Queensland Reconstruction Authority) for funding for repair or replacement. Some funding has already been approved for three bridges, 31 land slips and scours which have affected 18 roads and some damage to both sealed and unsealed roads. Work is currently underway in some of these locations and the entire restoration process is scheduled for completion in 18 months time.

vANDAlISM ReARS ITS UGlY heAD
Sadly all 80 young trees which were only planted last week along the Canungra Creek bank behind the properties on Picnic Place have been deliberately ripped out or snapped in half. Some were replanted and again they were vandalised. Council staff planted to try and preserve the Creek bank which was severely eroded during the recent cyclone. Canungra Police are currently investigating this wilful act and any information from residents would be welcome.

Canungra State School held their Athletics in August. Congratulations to all of the students who participated. The students competed with
enthusiasm, competitiveness and displayed great team spirit and sportsmanship by encouraging others and cheering them on. Mr Balcke did a great job with the lines for both the field and track events. It was his first time doing this and he did a marvellous job. At the conclusion of the field events on Tuesday which the Yr 4 – 6 students competed in, Flying Fox and Wonglepong were tied on 231 points and Witheren and Sarabah were only a couple of points behind. After the March Past points were awarded, Wonglepong was 1st and the other 3 houses were within 1 point of each other. It was a very close race. The 2017 Sport Forum hosted by Scenic Rim Regional Council delivered motivational tips from Jeffrey Hodges (Sportsmind Institute), and provided the opportunity for sports clubs to network. Commonwealth Games contender Erika Yamasaki also spoke, taking questions from the attendees. She gained many supporters after being so open and honest during her Q & A as well as talking one on one to many guests at the end of the evening. The aim of the evening is to thank clubs for their efforts and dedication to giving residents opportunities to be healthy and active.

veTeRANS DAY
Vietnam Veterans Day/Long Tan Day was held this year on Friday, 18th August 2017 at DJ Smith Park, commencing 10.30am. At this ceremony, the Canungra Vietnam veterans extended their hand of friendship to all those veterans who served in conflicts that followed the Vietnam War, from Somalia to Afghanistan. The service was well attended and the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch wishes to thank all those who attended and supported this historical day. Our appreciation to the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Nadia O’Carroll; Councillor Virginia West; the Commandant Land Warfare Centre, Colonel John Simeoni and his Chief of Staff Lieutenant, Lieutenant Colonel Daryl Campbell; Army Chaplain, Major James Pearce; and the Commanding Officer Defence Force School of Intelligence, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Alder and his Regimental Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class One, Lee Warner. I offer a special thank you to those old and new veterans who laid wreaths for Navy, Army and Air Force and acted as the flag orderlies. Your participation brought all those veterans who attended closer together. Mr Tim Hunt added to the ceremony with the playing of the Last Post and Rouse. Tim is a most generous person who is always there to add to the remembrance part of the ceremony. The keynote address was given by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas (Tom) Williams, USMC, Ret. In his presentation, Tom reflected on his time as a young platoon commander in Vietnam and of his service in many conflicts in the Middle East. His speech brought back memories to both the older and newer Veterans in attendance. His words showed regardless where all current and former Australian Defence Force members have served, today’s veterans have just as much in common with older veterans. More importantly, it afforded all those in attendance to remember: Those we joined with, those we trained with, those we deployed with, and those who we did not come home with. Lest We Forget.

Dock - 63684. Guinea Pig – Abyssinian Cross. Male – baby. $25 How handsome am I, in my glorious Lilac coat? I would love a new home with an OLDER MALE piggy friend for company & snuggle time and also so that I can learn how to ‘pig’ from him!. Lara - 63719 Blue Roan/Black - Australian Cattledog Cross Male – 1 year, three months Lara is a soft gentle girl that just loves to play with her doggy friends and her humans. She isn’t a rambunctious type of girl but she does have a good amount of energy so an active family would probably suit her best. Lara has wonderful manners when meeting new four legged friends and once the formalities of sniffing are through she will offer the nicest play bows to engage her friends in a fun game of leap frog or chase. Lara would be happy to go home with another fur brother or sister, that way they can keep each other company while the humans are away at work or school. Lara has a big heart with a lot of love to share with her new owners, will you be the lucky ones to take her home?
Recently, I travelled to the Northern Territory and Western Australia on the hunt for several bird species, which had eluded me years ago. My first stop was the Darwin Botanic Gardens, which is home to a pair of resident Rufous Owls. My travelling companion had never seen this bird species and it had been years since I had seen this bird in the wild. We were lucky enough to see and photograph one Rufous Owl after a concerted effort. This was a great start to our birding trip! The next prominent birding area, was the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve. The dam was made in 1956 to collect water to irrigate rice bays for the Humpty Doo Rice Project. This project failed and left behind a site, which would become a well-renowned birdwatching and conservation site. We decided to arrive at Fogg Dam just as the sun was rising and we were privileged to observed one of the Top End’s most memorable experiences of thousands of waterbirds in their wetland habitat. The reserve is also home to many other bird species, saltwater crocodiles, macropods and reptiles. For anyone visiting the Top End to go birdwatching, a stop at Fogg Dam is an absolute must. Before we left the Darwin area, I had one more stop to see a beautiful bird, the Rainbow Pitta. My travel companion had seen this bird at the Howard Springs Nature Park in close quarters and this was how I hoped to see it. I was not to be disappointed as I had a Rainbow Pitta come with several feet of me and I was able to take some amazing shots. After having spent several successful days looking at birds around Darwin, we then headed south towards Pine Creek and Katherine. We were on the hunt for two endemic bird species: the Hooded Parrot and Chesnut-quilled Rock Pigeon, which could only be found in this region. I will have to write about that part of my birding trip next month!

bush, were introduced from Africa. This butterfly has an interesting relationship with those, now common, weeds. The milky, latex-like sap is a poison designed to protect the plant from predators. However the caterpillars emerging from eggs laid on these plants are born with a tolerance and are able to exploit the milky poison for their own defence. As the caterpillar eats and grows, it concentrates the latex chemicals within its own exoskeleton where they are stored as a bitter poison, unpalatable to predators. This bitterness is retained by the adult butterfly for protection as well. It is interesting to note, however, that the Pied Currawong (Strepera graculina) and the Blackfaced Cuckoo-shrike (Coracina novaehollandiae) seem to be unaffected and can be observed feeding on the butterfly and caterpillar. The butterflies are strong fliers, recording speeds of up to 40km, covering long distances during their adult life. Known in North America for their large migrating groups, in Australia this species undertakes limited migrations. They expand their range in summer months. In the cooler months they seek shelter, gathering together to hang from the branches of trees in clusters of thousands of butterflies, returning to the same trees year after year.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough St Luke’s congregation has been kept very busy organising the Annual Church Dinner being held on Friday 1st September. Not only does September bring a new, colourful season but the dinner always reflects happiness, laughter, and activity. Many prizes to give away, an impressive array of food and much frivolity in store at the antics of John King and his team as they act out a Monty Python skit. Financially, St Luke’s will benefit from a fully booked evening. As it has been in the past and will remain so, all funds raised by St Luke’s Guild, with the help of the people of Canungra, are used to maintain the building so it remains a point of interest in the town, and a place of worship for all. The church was recently filled for a service of baptism for Austin William Gamble. Proud parents, Gina and Tom invited family and friends to join them for this special occasion and the Church Guild presented Austin with a child’s first bible. St Luke’s was also the chosen place to farewell local identity George Randall, whose Funeral and life was celebrated there last month. Our sympathy is extended to all of George’s family. Did you see St Luke’s stand at the Canungra Show? A dedicated band of parishioners cheerfully handed out free bottles of water at the show. This gave us a chance to meet local people and to share a little of St Luke’s character – to give willingly and freely.

WARNING DEFENCE PRACTICE AREA CANUNGRA FIELD TRAINING AREA QUEENSLAND
TRAINING AREA/RANGE NOISE NOTICE Residents to areas surrounding the Canungra Field Training Area are warned that it is a Defence live firing range and to expect periods of heightened noise volume. Defence training includes firing practices with live ammunition, explosives, simulation devices and lasers that generally occur daily between 0700h – 1600h. Night time practices also occur and are generally completed before 2200h. During these core operating hours, residence in the surrounding areas may experience louder than normal noise levels. This could be due to a change in weather conditions or wind direction, or due to the type of munitions or simulation devices being employed to achieve a training outcome. Defence now has the capability to notify residences of increased periods of noise volume on the training area via an SMS alert. These alerts are intended to advise residence of an increased level of forecasted training area noise over a prescribed period of time. If you wish to be included in this notification process please contact range control on (07) 5618 6270 and provide your name and mobile number. Tennis is Hitting Back into Town! By Bren Dalby The tennis promotion on Friday 18th August run by Moriarty Park and Michael and his crew from KDV Sport was a success with lots of children and parents showing great interest. Thanks to Michael for organising new nets and winder for Moriarty Park and to Neville and Troy Hartley for their time and expertise in setting up same. Canungra Op Shop kindly paid for the nets; Michael, Neville and Troy gave of their time freely. Tony and Anne and the Foodworks team supplied us with supplies for a free sausage sizzle which was greatly appreciated by all. Hoping we can see much more tennis being played at Moriarty Park and great timing with soccer coming to a close shortly.
Above: Paige McCabe has a hit. Right: Symke Parry, Willow Batten and Alexandra McCabe
Canungra AH&I Society would like to thank our sponsors for supporting the
Canungra Show and Rodeo on 26 and 27 August
as well as the Moriarty Park committee for use of Moriarty Park and the Canungra Sports and Recreation Association for use of the Canungra Showground.
We would also like to thank all of the volunteers who worked hard to bring these events to the community. Without you our events would not be possible. Looking forward to bigger and better in 2018! Phone: 0403 278 556 Page 44

The Canungra Times - September 2017
Sport
By Rachel Mathers The 2017 season has come to an end for most of the Canungra Owls Soccer Club players. Our U12s are still going strong, heading into their very first finals series as this edition goes to print! We wish them all the very best and look forward to sharing their success with the community next month. Our U15s missed out on a finals birth by one position, ending their season fifth on the ladder, equal with fourth in points, but below them (by two) in goal difference. Well done girls, what a tough way to finish. As everyone knows, this year got off to a very wet and frustrating start. Well done to the players, officials and parents for their patience and understanding; let’s hope the start of the 2018 season runs smoother and Mother Nature is kind! On Sunday 20th August, the Owls hosted The Bren Dalby Carnival for the second time. Seventeen teams (that’s 183 players!) from 11 clubs on the Gold Coast, participated in 57 games across five fields. It was great to see some of the teams use the day as an end of season team get together, bringing along their families to enjoy the great facilities Moriarty Park has on offer – I can’t think of another club that has a playground, half basketball court, skate park, exercise facilities, cricket nets and a free BBQ to use … what a great community we live in!
Canungra Owls U8s
Thanks to Canungra & District Community Bank for sponsoring the carnival, allowing 100% of funds raised to remain within our Club. Congratulations to Tamborine Mountain Eagles U9s and Musgrave Mustangs U10s who were awarded Best and Fairest trophies, as voted by each team and referee on the day. A huge shout out needs to be given to our U8s team, who also participated in The Bren Dalby Carnival. These kids played against U9 teams and although they didn’t manage
to score a goal in their six games, their sportsmanship throughout the day didn’t go unnoticed – they were pipped at the post as Best and Fairest by only one vote. Congratulations Canungra U8s! We are extremely proud to have you in our club and we look forward to watching you grow together in the future. We look forward to celebrating the end of the season at our presentation morning on Sunday 10th September….hoot hoot! Established May 2005

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby
Dean Meldrum and Lizzy Richens had the first workout on the new fitness modules
The fitness modules are proving a great success and are being well utilised! Lots of positive feedback! It was great to see many children playing soccer and great supporters having a super day out in sunny Canungra on 20th August at The Bren Dalby Carnival ... for obvious reasons even more special for me! The Canungra Owls team really put together a top event and so many people were tremendously impressed with the calibre of the event, its smooth running, the enthusiasm created and the food provided! Top job Canungra Owls !!!! Netball still an option guys ... had a lovely lady call me during the week to try to put together a couple of girls teams for social netball. Hoping to chat further at next MP meeting on Tuesday 19th September at 7pm. All welcome to attend. Dog obedience and tracking are going well and hopefully a trial competition is coming up later in the year. Please note though that whilst other members of the public with dogs loose chasing balls etc at Moriarty Park is essentially not allowed, we really don’t mind as long as all poo picked up and dogs are well behaved. However I ask that when obedience and tracking is on - Wednesday and Friday nights and Tuesday mornings (it is obvious when they are present and working) - please abstain from
having other loose dogs in the park. Indeed it would be appreciated if at those times the park could be avoided for dog walking. Let the tracking dogs etc do their sport without any unnecessary distractions. Let’s try to work together and have no dramas please. Thanks for everyone’s support with what we are trying to achieve at Moriarty Park to create a terrific and varied use facility to accommodate everyone should they wish! TRIVIA - next one is 23rd September at 6.30 at Moriarty Park. BYO nibbles and drinks; tables of up to 6 for $10 ... and yes of course the raffle (this is where we make our money really and we always give to a worthy and different cause). Book with Bren on 0414435919 / bren.dalby@bigpond.com. Foodworks once again supplying the prizes; they are just fantastic! Make sure to try to thank them when you see them in the store! There will be a PINK trivia night on 13th October for those filling in their calendars! Same deal but only four to a table (or you can have six and pay double). Any feedback , issues etc. please feel free to contact Bren on above number .Cheers !

of the
9-10 months of the year, on top of her usual soccer commitments, Amy has been training with a team of professional futsal coaches. Although Amy is considered an U9 player, she is training with the U10 Development team. Besides additional friendly training games against other academies in Brisbane, Amy and her team participated in the NSW Northern State League Tournament one Sunday per month over four months. Her team finished second and had a great finals series, walking away with a silver medal. Amy will be playing in the Tuesday night Gold Coast Futsal competition and, providing her Galaxy FC team has the numbers, she will be participating in the U10s Premiere League Futsal competition on Thursday nights from October. Amy has been a member of the Canungra Owls since her family moved to the area in 2013 and currently plays in the mixed U9s competition. Despite the lure of an all girls team in 2016 and 2017, Amy chose to stay with the team that she has been part of for several years. Amy is often the only girl on the field, but this doesn’t stop her at all - Amy always gives 100% and is a reliable, valuable member of her team. At the beginning of 2017 Amy was ‘dragged’ along to her older brother’s Small Sided Referee course and ended up being an active participant. Amy refereed her first U7 game in June and is looking forward to being a referee in the future! Well done Amy! We look forward to hearing about your future sporting successes!
