Shares Sold - Next Stop, Community Bank®

The last of the shares in the Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch have been applied for and the new branch is set to open its doors later this year. It has been a long road for the volunteer committee and board members, who have been campaigning for over three years. The $790,000 minimum target was achieved when the prospectus closed on 23rd May 2016 and Canungra will soon boast over 280 shareholders in its own Community Bank® branch. The share application process ended in a nail-biting finish, with many people waiting until the last two weeks before applying for their shares, leaving the project’s future uncertain almost until the last minute. Canungra & District Community Financial Group Chair, Janine Rockliff said the board was overjoyed at achieving its goal.

“To raise over $790,000 in start up capital is an amazing achievement,” said Janine. “It shows just how much the community believes in the Community Bank® model and the benefits it will bring.” Janine said many businesses, community organisation and residents have already supported the project by banking at the Canungra Bendigo Bank Agency, however the limited hours of the Agency has meant that it is not practical for some people to do this. “We encourage all our families, retirees, traders, young professionals, business owners and community groups who have not already done so, to also move their banking business across to our new branch when it opens. “Our new branch will not only offer the community a locally-operated banking alternative, it will also help fund the community’s growth by investing profits back into local services,” Janine said. “It’s not often that a community can take ownership of its own financial future

like this, and it’s something we should

be really celebrating.” “Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch will offer a full range of quality banking services from its first day of operation, including term deposits, personal loans and business banking. “And the more business we get on our books, the more contributions we can make to help nurture the success of local community groups, projects and events.” Janine said there were currently more than 300 Community Bank® branches across Australia that had returned more than $148 million to support local communities. “I know Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch will follow in the footsteps of these successful branches and work in partnership with our community to build a stronger and more sustainable district into the future,” she said. For more information about Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch contact Janine Rockliff on 0434 238 008.

Time to Vote - 2016 Federal Election

Australians will vote to decide who will govern the country at the Federal election on Saturday 2nd July 2016. All Australian citizens over 18 who are enrolled to vote, elect people in the two houses of the Commonwealth Parliament – the Senate and the House of Representatives. To vote for a Member of the House of Representatives, write the number ‘1’ in the box next to the candidate who is the voter’s first choice, and the numbers ‘2’, ‘3’ and so on against the other candidates until all the boxes are numbered, in order of the voter’s preference. Voting rules for the Senate have changed. You need to either: • number at least six boxes above the line for the parties or groups of your choice, or • number at least 12 boxes below the line for individual candidates of your choice. Ballot papers must be marked according to the rules so that they do not create informal votes which can not be counted. The locations and opening times of early voting centres will be available on the Australian Electoral Commission web site in the weeks leading up to election day.

LNP Scott Buchholz

I WANT to keep representing the people of Canungra to keep getting the best deal possible for this great region. I firmly believe Canungra will benefit most under a re-elected Coalition Government. Already we have seen some of the great things which can be achieved locally under the current leadership. Earlier this year I announced $220m for the Kokoda Barracks at Canungra through the 2016 Defence White Paper. The government will invest $20 million in the barracks in the next decade and a further $200 million between 2025-26 and 2035-36. The money will be used to upgrade infrastructure at the barracks to support Australian Defence Force training. I’ve continually advocated to the Defence Minister and the Prime Minister the value of the Kokoda Barracks from a military strategy perspective and also from a community and economic benefits perspective. I have fought hard and succeeded in bringing forward the rollout of high speed internet in Canungra. This is an issue I have championed since before the last election and my advocacy is paying off. This electorate was not even on the 10-year NBN planning map previously but now we will get the NBN locally next year. At Boyland, Canungra and Wonglepong, 700 premises will be connected through fibre to the node in the second half of 2017. I have been involved with advocating for Green Army projects to improve the health of land and water along Canungra Creek and I am thrilled that 5000 native trees and shrubs are being planted there this year.

Australian Labor Party -

Allistair Smith

High school teacher Allistair Smith is the ALP’s candidate for Wright. “I grew up in the Lockyer and worked on the family farm at Blenheim while putting myself through an agriculture degree at The University of Queensland Gatton campus,” said Allistair. “Wright is a diverse electorate and my experience working in primary production, private industry and the public education sector puts me in a good position to represent our local interests in Canberra.” “As a high school teacher, I speak every day with mums and dads about the challenges families are facing, like unreliable internet connections, how hard it is for young people to find a job and lack of local health care services. “This is one of the most beautiful parts of Australia; but there are real problems facing families.” “One of my first priorities is to address connectivity issues with internet, mobile and home phone services providers.” “I was proud to be part of Bill Shorten’s team when he announced Labor’s Future Smart education policy, which will see coding taught in schools and students supported to start and finish a degree without a $100,000 debt sentence.” “I’ll work with all levels of government to ensure the best possible outcomes for our community and will be a tireless advocate to stop the cuts, stop the unfair budgets and to ensure strong representation in Canberra.” “Whether you are a farmer in the Lockyer Valley, a business owner in Jimboomba or a young family trying to get started in life in Boonah; I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and working for you.” “If anyone wants to have a cuppa, I’m available on 0431 739 985, email allistair.smith@australianlabor.com.au or find me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SmithForWright.”

Queensland Greens Pietro Agnoletto

Pietro says he represents the Greens because they fight for accountability and transparency in Government. He believes the Greens stand up for what he cares about: our precious environment, a confident Australia, equality and compassion. Pietro and his wife Desley created the Schonell Pizza Caffé at the University of Queensland, which saw people come from all over Brisbane to enjoy their unique A to Z pizza menu. He studied anthropology and philosophy and has always had a love of architecture and art. A dedicated volunteer with Beaudesert and District Community Arts Projects (BADCAP), Pietro works tirelessly to support public art in the Scenic Rim. “I passionately support the Greens’ national plan to transition to renewable energy. I know it would open up new opportunities for a range of local businesses – not only those providing local renewable energy solutions but also traditional industries such as resources, manufacturing, sales, transportation, IT, construction, engineering and finance.” “I see the Bromelton Industrial Estate outside Beaudesert as a wonderful opportunity to showcase innovative and sustainable industrial design, creating skilled and stimulating employment opportunities. I believe we need to invest in innovation, R&D, infrastructure and small business to create the well-paid jobs of the future.” “I actively support the local tourism industry and want to ensure agricultural land and significant natural areas are protected forever. I believe only the Greens have the courage and vision to both protect our precious natural heritage while investing in the new economy of the future.”

Fete

Blue skies and smiling faces were the order of the day at Canungra Uniting Church’s annual fete. As always the Cake Stall was amongst the most popular with few items left at the end of the day and most cakes selling out early in the morning. Pam Moriarty said the day went really well, with great weather and a lot of help from the community in providing donations for the fete and assistance in setting up and running stalls on the day. “We were very happy having the fete at the front of the Church block, in the wooden hall and the church,” said Pam. “The marquees created a very festive atmosphere. We would like to thank everyone who Photo: Cath Marsden, Barry Day and Agnes contributed to the success of the Spaniak at the plant stall fete in any way.” Pam said there was a group of return patrons from a caravan club, several of whom came to Church on the Sunday. Canungra Uniting Church has regular church services every Sunday and also hosts Canungra Youth Group every second Friday evening.

The Outpost Cafe’s 70th Birthday Celebrating The Covino Family 10 years operating The Outpost Cafe

Left: Roy Jope, Andrew Covino, John, Joy and Jean Jope at the birthday celebrations. Facing page: The Outpost Cafe management and staff gather around the birthday cake.

It was a double celebration at The Outpost Cafe on Saturday 19th May with the Covino family’s 10th year owning the iconic cafe and the building turning 70 years old. Guests of honour were sons of the original cafe’s builder, John and Roy Jope and their wives. John said his father, John James Jope, (known as Jack), built the cafe in 1946, and sold fruit and vegetables and petrol from a Golden Fleece pump. It was a family business with Jack’s wife Winnifred and the children all helping out. At one time the cafe was feeding 70-80 men working on buildings at Kokoda Barracks. They provided a hot breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals were served in

a marquee with a concrete floor where the gift shop in The Outpost Cafe and Canungra Pharmacy is now. Sadly Jack passed away in 1956 at the age of 48 and the family sold the business in 1958. His wife Winnifred passed away in 1959. The Outpost Cafe has seen many changes over the years but remains a familiar landmark. Originally the cafe was located close to the road with the petrol bowser out the front. In later years the front wall was moved back to accommodate the al fresco eating area. The Outpost Cafe owner, Andrew Covino, said the family is very excited about the ten year anniversary and

completed renovations in time for the celebration. “The renovations included putting in some retro-style booths which are great - they add atmosphere to the cafe and are great for families or small groups,” said Andrew. “We have also included a fast service takeaway till for pies, drinks and icecreams on weekends and during busy periods to cut down on the waiting times for customers.” “We want to keep the historical theme through the cafe, with photos of the building through the years on the wall - and we’ve even managed to find a Golden Fleece pump to display!” he said.

Thank You

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Every contribution counts There are some big things happening in town over the next few months, brought about mainly by volunteers. I want to thank everyone who has supported the Community Bank® project so far. Last month they passed the minimum target of shares needed to go ahead and this dedicated group of people have worked hard for something they know will be great for our community. We are also getting close to the Canungra Rodeo and Show dates and there are a band of people who step up every year to organise and run these events for the community. From sponsors to the committee to the people who help out on the day, everyone makes a difference. Moriarty Park is moving forward with the Skate Park expansion as well and looking for people to help out with this project. The Canungra Village Garden Project has just found a home at Canungra State School. If you think your contribution won’t be enough to make a difference, think again. Those $500 shareholders in the Community Bank® have made it possible. The Rodeo and Show wouldn’t happen without people doing a couple of hours on the gate. Soccer benefits from some home made goods brought to the canteen to sell. Trust me, every little bit helps!

Dear Keer, The Canungra Uniting Church would like to thank all those who came along and supported our annual Fete on 14th May, and to those who donated items to the stalls. Your support was very much appreciated. A special thnk you to those who conductd the stalls, and to the men who helped with the shifting of tables, erecting of Gazebos, etc. Regards, Cath Marsden

Vale Wilf Mahony

Obituary

(8 June 1922 to 30 April 2016) The youngest of seven children, Wilf Mahony lived his life in Canungra. He was the youngest child of Jessie and Mable Mahony, grandson of Amos Finch and great grandson of Hugh Mahony - one of the original pioneers of Canungra. His early years were spent in the town of Canungra as his parents lived in a house at the end of Finch Road, not far from the Canungra Rise estate. His father was a bullocky carting sawn timber from the Canungra Mill to Jimboomba and surrounding areas. Wilf commenced school at the old Canungra State School, could ride a horse at a very early age, and learned to swim in the Canungra Creek. When he was about 11 years old his father purchased a dairy farm at Pine Creek (now Illinbah). Not only did they have their own cows to milk but they also took on Romeo Lahey’’s dairy. They had about 60-70 cows to milk morning and night by hand. As he was still school age at this time he was enrolled in Flying Fox School, however distractions on the way saw his attendance record slump. His mother, adamant that he should complete his schooling, enrolled him in correspondence school. His big sister Winnie was in charge of his lessons, however, it was often Winnie that completed the exercises while Wilf joined the men doing farm work. The Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour and the invasion of Papa New Guinea brought the World War 2 to Australia. Wilf enlisted in the 1 Aust Ind Light Horse SQN in January 1942. After initial training, the squadron was moved to Townsville where they patrolled the far north of Queensland checking for Japanese landing parties and tracking aircraft. The squadron was disbanded in early 1944 and Wilf tired of sitting around waiting for things to happen Wilf delisted in March 1944. He returned home to the family farm for the far more important role of providing the nation with food. During his time in the light horse, Wilf had the honour of parading on horseback over the Storey Bridge and down Queen Street. This was one of the highlights of his time in the armed services. With his brother Cyril, Wilf continued to dairy until the 80’s when they concentrated on beef cattle production. He was a familiar figure around local cattle and calf sales. Wilf attended the first Canungra Show, and did not miss a show until a few years back when ill health and rain prevented him from attending. He served on the committee for a number of years and was joint secretary. He always a participant - entering cattle, pumpkins, or honey. Once when he was offered a horse to ride in the show jumping he grabbed the chance and won first prize. He was a life member of the Canungra Bowls Club and part of the famous pennant winning team. As a patron he would provide the part of the prize pool for patron’s day held in December. Originally it was four turkeys which in later years converted to the more convenient turkey breasts. Wilf had a great love of horse racing. His one joy in the last months of his life was being able to watch the racing channel. Over the years he had a few runners of his own; his most memorable being Illinbah which raced in Brisbane. Wilf is the last of his generation, born and raised in Canungra he lived a quiet life not touched by the extravagances of the modern world. EAT LOCAL WEEK - 25th JUNE to 3rd JULY BITE INTO THIS HOLIDAY FUN

Put the gadgets away, pull on your gumboots and give your kids a food and farming experience they won’t forget. Scenic Rim Eat Local Week returns for the first week of the Queensland school holidays, from 25th June to 3rd July, and is a chance to show your children where their food comes from. Between seeing cows milked by robots, picking their own carrots, cuddling a lamb and learning how to forage for native Australian ingredients, there will be no time for complaints of ‘I’m bored’. Scenic Rim Eat Local Week is a popular food and farming festival that asks visitors to consider their food and drink choices and recognise the array of products available on their doorstep. The week-long event features an array of free and low-cost activities that are perfect for families and food lovers. “Scenic Rim Eat Local Week celebrates the farmers who produce the food and drink that we so often take for granted,” says Scenic Rim Mayor, Cr Greg Christensen. “This is a unique opportunity to give your children an authentic insight into how their food is produced and to meet the people behind that food.”

S

FEAST ON EAT LOCAL WEEK

SCENIC Rim Eat Local Week plates up from 25th June, with a delicious schedule of food and farming events. The festival of food and farming is now in its sixth year and showcases the bounty of fresh produce, wine, beer, milk and gourmet products that grow in the region’s fertile volcanic soil. This year’s festival features more than 55 events – from farm tours, to cheese and wine tastings, to cooking classes and exclusive producer dinners, curated by some of Brisbane and the Gold Coast’s leading chefs. Eat Local Week culminates in a signature event, the Winter Harvest Festival, on 2nd July at Aratula. On this day the region’s producers come to one location to sell their produce. The day features free kids rides and activities, a Tractor Pulling competition, live music and cooking demonstrations by leading chefs. Scenic Rim Mayor, Cr Greg Christensen, says Eat Local Week has grown from humble beginnings to emerge as one of the State’s premier and authentic food events. “The event was first established as a way of highlighting the broad range of produce that is grown in in the region, to encourage consumers to source their food and beverages close to home. “The event has grown in both scale and popularity but our focus is still very much on retaining the authenticity. Visitors can connect with farmers and have a real farm experience.

The Open Studios weekend on 28th and 29th May saw St Luke’s Anglican Chuch displaying some of the region’s best art. Water colourist Gerard Walker, teamed up with silversmith and lead lighter Emma Dusting and potter Deb Oberhardt to display their artistic mediums to great effect. Several of Gerard’s painting of St Luke’s Church and other local buildings were on display, giving the Open Studio a great local vibe. Deb Oberhardt’s pottery greeted visitors at the Church yard gate, with an array of bowls, animals, fairy doors and planters for sale. Watching Emma Dusting create leadlights was a highlight for many visitors on the weekend. Inside the leadlights were displayed in the windows to great effect, the sun dancing through the open windows of the Church. Visitors came from throughout the Scenic Rim, Gold Coast and Brisbane for the popular weekend art trail. Melissa Lattimer and her son Jake opened their studio to the public for the weekend and on Beechmont Wendy Trulson, Erica Bates and Val Waring held workshops and demonstrations of their art at the Beechmont Community Centre.

What a wonderful weekend of showcasing local artistic talent it was with Wendi, Erica and Val at the Beechmont Community Centre with its new cafe and Gerard, Deb and Emma exhibiting in our beautiful and historic St Luke’s Anglican Church. Melissa and Jake Latimer again showcased their work in their restful outdoor setting. Congratulations to you all on being part of another successful Open Studios Trail. This event, in its sixth year just gets bigger and more spectacular each year as we showcase the food and produce produced in the Scenic Rim region. The launch was held again at QAGOMA on the banks of the Brisbane River where the spectacular book “Eat Local” was launched. This tells the stories of a number of local producers including Dale Mahony and The Lee Family and is available for purchase at the Canungra Visitor Information Centre and My Country Escape. For further Eat Local Week information on events pick up a brochure at the Canungra Visitor Information Centre.

Nature’s Gems

Crested Tern (Thalasseus Bergii) By Melissa Whitby The south-east Queensland coastline is home to a variety of bird species. For the last six months, I have been involved in conducting coastal bird surveys and one species that I always record is the Crested Tern. The Crested Tern can be identified in breeding plumage by its black crested cap with white face margin, which separates the yellow bill and black legs. In non-breeding plumage, Crested Terns have a completely white forehead and streaked black cap. The Crested Tern can be confused with the Lesser Crested Tern. However, Crested Terns are larger with a yellow bill whilst the Lesser Crested Tern has an orange bill. The Crested Tern is a common bird species and has a distribution which extends around the whole of the Australian coastline including Tasmania. These birds utilize a variety of habitats, which include coastal marine environments such as beaches, tidal rivers and bays and will also frequent man-made environments such as boat marinas. Crested Terns can be seen out fishing singly or in larger numbers off-shore and will return to rest in flocks on beaches and boat jetties. Other species of terns such as Lesser Crested Terns will rest with the Crested Terns. The breeding season of Crested Terns is dependent on which part of Australia they are residing. These birds will nest in colonies on islands and the nest is usually a scrape in the ground with one egg. In particular locations such as North Stradbroke Island, Crested Terns appear to have adapted to some disturbance by humans and can be approached closely before taking flight. These stunning birds can also be easily seen flying along beaches at Burleigh on the Gold Coast. For anyone wishing to photograph Crested Terns, I would suggest visiting St Helena Island in Moreton Bay or North Stradbroke Island. As always, I encourage people to Crested Tern respect the space of the birds when photographing them. Crested Terns are a bird species which I never get tired of looking at as they are incredibly graceful in flight. I hope that I have inspired some of the people who have read this article to look up the next time they are at the beach and I am sure you will see a Crested Tern!

Southern Purple Azure Butterfly. Photo: Wes Jenkinson

Much Maligned Mistletoes By Susan Cully The Southern Purple Azure butterfly is a tiny jewel among the butterflies of this district. Invisible when resting with wings closed, vibrant when darting among Eucalyptus mistletoes. This butterfly has two interesting habits. Firstly, its larvae (caterpillars) require a specific food source or host plant. For this butterfly mistletoes found on eucalypts provide the required diet, specifically the Amyema, Dendrophthoe, and Muellerina mistletoes. Secondly, it has a vital relationship with ants. The caterpillars of this butterfly live in close association with selected ants. The butterfly larvae secrete a substance eaten by ants. In turn the ants provide protection. The relationship is demonstrated by the Southern Purple Azure (Ogyris genoveva). These butterfly larvae form colonies within the nests of “Sugar Ants” (Camponotis species). These ant nests at the base of mistletoe-bearing trees become a safe refuge for the developing caterpillars. But there is more….at dusk the ants shepherd the larvae up the tree trunk to the mistletoe, where they feed. At dawn the larvae return to the nests, again under the protection of the ants. The butterfly larvae then pupate in the ant nests, emerging as adult butterflies. A new book, The Mistletoes of Subtropical Queensland and New South Wales and Victoria, by John T Moss and Ross Kendall, champions the importance of mistletoes in our gardens and bushlands. Incorrectly believed by many to be a pest and a killer of host trees, mistletoes are now known to have a vital and astonishingly refined, mutually beneficial, relationship. Mistletoes not only depend on the host tree but also provide nutrients to the tree. In return the host tree supports the germination of mistletoe seed and provides required nutrients to the developing plant, demonstrating a balanced symbiotic or mutualistic relationship. There is no need to remove mistletoes from trees: rather, study and enjoy the butterflies and the ants dwelling there.

Students Hooked on World Fish Migration Day

A group of students gained an appreciation of the importance of fish migration after helping scientists return fish to the Hinze Dam. More than 25 Beechmont State School students visited the dam on 20th May, to help celebrate World Fish Migration Day. As part of their visit, the students from Year 5 and 6 toured the Hinze Dam Interpretive Centre and took part in an educational experience hosted by the Seqwater Education team and Senior Scientist David Roberts. Students learned about the dam, including its ‘trap and haul’ fish facility – the first of its kind built in Australia. The facility assists fish with migration upstream and sorts natural species from exotic ones. Students were invited to help Seqwater scientists release more than 20 species of fish that had been collected in the Seqwater Fishway - as well as an eel and a turtle. Mr Roberts said the World Fish Migration Day event was about getting people together to discuss and learn about the importance of fish migration. “Many people don’t realise that fish need to migrate up and down rivers to complete their life cycle.” Mr Roberts said, “Any barrier to migration can start to affect those fish species and reduce their numbers. Beechmont State School teacher Courtenay Noakes said her students learned a lot by taking part in Seqwater’s World Fish Migration Day event. “The students are now able to better understand the behavioural adaptations of living things and how they survive in their environments,” she said.

News from St Luke’s

Suduko

By Di Ayscough

St Luke’s recently hosted the venue for three local artists who participated in the Canungra Valley Arts Collective Open Studios program. We were pleased to provide the church as a facility for the beautiful works on display and to offer our own hospitality through the provision of food and beverages. It is always exciting to share about the history of St Luke’s and to know our 80 year old church is viewed as a cornerstone of Canungra. Most of us at some point in our lives call out to God when we have a need, and so for those people who do not normally step inside, the Open Studio’s enabled them to come along and feel the warmth and comfort offered by St Luke’s. As winter approaches it is easy to feel cold and lonely. Perhaps the chill in the air or the bare trees make us feel gloomy and sad. Please remember you are never alone. God is with you always whether you realise that or not. He has a plan for each one of us and that can be very important for the direction you feel your life is moving towards. You are welcome to come to St Luke’s on a Sunday morning and listen for the bell to ring, hear the cheerfulness of the people who are there and know you can come just as you are. Being the 80th year of the building it is a special time to make contact and feel a sense of belonging. Having a birthday is always reason for celebration, regardless of one’s age. We all know it is nice to feel cared about and be recognised. This year our annual fundraising dinner will be a great birthday party for St Luke’s. After all, 80 is a wonderful milestone! The dinner will be held in August and I encourage you to come along and enjoy the celebration as well as the friendship and entertainment. If you would like more details please do hesitate to call me on 5533 7070.

Solution page 27

This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Club

Canungra Trail Riding Club is the newest equestrian Club in the district. It was formed in February this year to bring like-minded horse people together to explore the Scenic Rim on Horseback. The Club is affiliated with ATHRAAustralian Trail Horse Riding Association and currently has approximately 20 members. Members from other Trail Riding Clubs are welcome to join the regular rides conducted by the Club, provided they have current insurance with ATHRA. “Members from surrounding clubs coming along to see the amazing trails we take our riders on,” said Kelly Archer. “There are calendar year memberships and day visits available also. We do have a $10 per rider per ride club

fee that is compulsory to members and guests. All riders must have their own horse, and tack to participate in the rides. There is no requirement to have a particular

type of saddle but it should be comfortable for both horse and rider. Kelly said the Club has scheduled rides once or twice a month with a camp planned every two to three months. The Club’s next scheduled ride is a half day ride on 19th June through the beautiful Illinbah Valley. This ride is for horses that are shod and experienced riders preferred due to the terrain. With some great day and half day rides in the region, Kelly urges anyone interested in exploring the Scenic Rim on horseback to contact her via the Club’s facebook page www.facebook. com/canungratrailridingclub/ or by email to admin@canungratrailridingclub.com.

Stephen Mills, Club President Another great couple of weeks of soccer for the Club with the kids really making some solid improvements and also our Men’s team putting in the some big efforts, well done to all. Try to get down to a Wednesday night game to show your support for the men and also Saturday games with the little ones, they all thrive from the cheering and crowd support. Soccer is Canungra’s biggest team sport and growing each year and if you’ve not been down to watch it’s well worth a trip down to Moriaty Park. We have some talented soccer players in our little village who you may see playing for Australia one day so get down and say hello. Exciting news with our new playing shirts arrived and everyone looking sharp in yellow and green last Saturday. Again huge thanks to our sponsors and committee for making this happen. Our canteen is looking for more volunteers to help out with making home baked goods and also assisting in the canteen on training days Looking good in the new playing shirts! and game days, so anyone keen to support the Club by donating fresh baked products or healthy snacks for the kids please feel free to drop them down. Our Club relies heavily on volunteer work and the more we have supporting the infrastructure the more we get done for the kids. We have made huge headway this year already with our committee and ongoing support appreciated. School holidays are coming up soon and not only have we managed to secure one of Australia’s most talented coaches, Gary French, to host a clinic here in the first week, we have also secured Brisbane Roars Active Programme in the second week. For more information on both please contact the Club President on 0499 770 106 or email canungraowls@ outlook.com. Team photos will be happening soon so check out our Facebook page for samples of our new style of team pictures by local photographer Elle Hogan with dates to be announced soon.

Sport Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby We recently held our AGM and have a new committee - actually more a bit of a reshuffle with a couple of additions! Good numbers are coming to meetings and lots of ideas to utilise the facility optimally. All are welcome to come to meetings every third Tuesday of the month, 7pm at Moriarty Park. Memberships are $2 to have a say and get involved in a terrific five year plan. Any ideas anyone has but is can’t bring to a meeting can be emailed to bren.dalby@bigpond.com. A major venture being revisited is the expansion of the skate park. Some years ago the children from Canungra State School raised close to $3000 for this project. This has been kept separate to running funds at Moriarty Park, to be used to create a super skate park. There were reasons for this being put on the ‘back burner‘ but now with the offer of help from Aaron Austin and Dave Staver in particular, we feel we can again address this. Anyone willing to help please contact us; would love to get a feel for how much enthusiasm there is for this venture as it will be a tremendous amount of work and cost a tremendous amount of money!! We think this will be a great asset to the community. The idea of holding dog obedience classes at Moriarty Park, most likely on a Friday evening, is being thrown around too so look out for that! Please pop in your diaries that our Christmas Carols will be held on Saturday 3rd December!

Sportsperson of the Month

The Sportsperson for May is Patrick Mathers. In late 2015, Patrick was successful in trailing for a developmental group under Galaxy Futsal Club - a newly founded professional, representative based club which has amalgamated four of the clubs in the SE QLD/NNSW regions (Gold Coast Futsal being one of them). Patrick is now part of the Galaxy FC “family” and will stay with them over the coming years, training towards being part of the F-League (the futsal equivalent to the A-League). Over the April holidays, Patrick and his teammates travelled to Melbourne to complete in the Victorian State Titles. They played six games in two days but unfortunately were unsuccessful in the final series. It was a great learning experience for Patrick, who continues to train with his teammates every weekend, on top of his usual commitment to Club Soccer and refereeing for the Canungra Owls Soccer Club.

Morgan Lee

The Sportsperson for June is Morgan Lee, a regular swimmer at Canungra Pool for many years, participating in club swimming and swim meets. In 2016 Morgan has represented Tamborine Mountain State High School in swimming at District, Regional and State level. In March 2016 Morgan was classified as S7 in Multi Class swimming, enabling her to compete against other swimmers of short stature. At the Queensland School Sports Swimming Championships she won gold for 50m backstroke, silver for 50m and 100m freestyle and for 50m breaststroke, and bronze for 50m butterfly. She has qualified to compete at the Australian School Sports Swimming Championships to be held in Darwin in September this year. As Sportspersons of the Month, Patrick and Morgan receive a $50 Canungra FoodWorks voucher and a $50 voucher from a sports store at the Award Ceremony conducted in January each year. To nominate for Sportsperson of the month, contact Bren Dalby on 0414 435 919.
