parts of your body that are non standard but then end up having to let out or take in other parts to fit better?

The mid-morning Service commenced with the march from Canungra State School to D J Smith Memorial Park, led by uniformed members from the Defence Force School of Intelligence. The sounds of the BBC Old Collegians Pipes and Drums filled the air and inspired the RSL Veterans with their straight backs and pride as they turned their heads sharply to the right when passing the saluting dais in front of the Canungra Post Office. They were followed by the SES, Ambulance Services, Scouts and huge number of well turned out students from Canungra State School. The Memorial Service commenced with the mounting of the Catafalque Party provided by the Defence Force School of Intelligence. The Canungra State School Captains, Ruby Young and Harry Hogan, beautifully read the ANZAC Day poem followed by Mr Chris Duncan’s excellent rendition of “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” that moved us all. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Alder, Commanding Officer, DFSI having earlier taken the Salute at the Post Office delivered an informative speech on those who served but did not return. Army Chaplain Major James Peace offered prayers of compassion for the fallen, the injured and their families - his words complemented those of Lieutenant Colonel Alder. The Wreath Laying Ceremony was outstanding with town folk and visitors wanting to pay their respects and in such numbers that did a small community proud. Following the “Ode of Remembrance”, Mr Tim Hunt provided the haunting bugle sounds of “Last Post” and “Rouse”. Miss Rebecca Lloyd again performanced the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems. On behalf of the committee and members of the Canungra RSL SubBranch, I sincerely thank you for your attendance at both services and the way you shared the “Spirit of ANZAC”. Your efforts were outstanding. Well done!

Use PoliceLink to Report Incidents
Michelle Dennis from My Country Escape is ready for the plastic bag ban.
Plastic Bag Ban
The Queensland Government will enforce a state-wide ban on single-use plastic bags from 1st July 2018. Retailers may provide and charge for alternative bags, including reusable heavy-duty plastic bags, woven polypropylene “green bags,” paper or other bags. Shoppers can also bring their own bag or trolley. This means significant changes for some stores, where others will continue to use alternative products, such as paper bags or reusable bags. Canungra FoodWorks owner, Tony Nguyen said they will introduce higher weight reusable plastic bags for customers. “For the first month, at least, they will be free but we may eventually have to pass on a cost to customers,” said Tony. It is estimated that close to one billion single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags are used in Queensland each year.
Canungra Police Sergeant, Craig Roberts has urged residents to use PoliceLink to report suspicious incidents if the Police Station is unattended. Following several anecdotal reports on community social media pages of a man to following a woman through the street and attempting to lure women into a vehicle, Sgt Roberts said without suspicious incidents being reported there is little the police can do. “Canungra station is not staffed 24 hours so we need people to call 000 if it is an emergency or to use the PoliceLink web site or phone number to report non-urgent incidents if the station is unattended,” said Sgt Roberts. PoliceLink web page can be used to report hooning; lost property; a traffic crash (in Queensland and for insurance purposes only); to obtain an update on a matter previously reported; suspicious activities that are non-urgent; wilful damage and graffiti; noise or party complaints or to withdraw a complaint. To report a crime that is in progress, always all Triple Zero (000). To report an incident that is not urgenty, please visit the Queensland Police web site www.police.qld. gov.au/programs/policelink or phone 131 444.

Former Lawyer Accused of Snatching Child A convicted pedophile and disgraced former lawyer is accused of snatching a fouryear-old girl from her bed and molesting her while on bail, serving a suspended sentence and on parole. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, allegedly told her mother that Paul John Crowley, 51, from Toowong and Biddaddaba in the Scenic Rim, “took me outside beside the garage, pulled my pants down touched my bum and my parts” and that he “spanked” her bottom and her genitals. She told her mother that Crowley, who had been staying at the house overnight, pulled her out of bed in the early hours of 25th September 2017. Details of the claims were revealed in Brisbane Supreme Court when Crowley made an unsuccessful application for bail before Justice Peter Davis. Crowley has been in custody since 5th October, when he was charged with indecent treatment of the four-year-old and supplying alcohol to the girl’s 15-year-old aunt. At the time Crowley is alleged to have molested the four-year-old, he was on bail on charges of helping bikies launder drug money, and serving a suspended sentence for his 2016 child molestation offence. He was also on probation and on parole for five

breaches of bail, Crown prosecutor Evan O’Hanlon-Rose said. Mr O’Hanlon-Rose argued that Crowley should not be freed on bail, because Crowley Jr was a “danger particularly to children” and the allegations that he gave the 15-yearold a drink were “quite similar” to the
circumstances of his 2016 conviction for child molestation. In 2016 Crowley was convicted of molesting a 13-year-old girl after meeting her mother on a dating website, admitting he held her down while he squeezed her breast and kissed her on the lips after plying her with rum and Coke. The court was also told Crowley was sentenced to 10 years’ jail and struck off as a solicitor 17 years ago after losing $4 million of his clients’ money. Justice Davis criticised the police for failing to attend the four-year-old girl’s home to interview her. Instead, four days after the sleepover the girl’s mother asked her daughter if Crowley had touched her. Justice Davis said the girl’s account was uncorroborated, and the prosecution case was weak but he conceded the jury “might just accept what the little girl says”. The court heard the girl said that after the alleged assault Crowley returned her to her mother’s bed, where the mother and aunt were sleeping, without waking them. Justice Davis refused bail, saying Crowley may reoffend because he was still an alcoholic who acted spontaneously.

Canungra Bypass
From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Remembering Over 100 years after the battle at Gallipoli, crowds are still attending Anzac Day services in greater numers than ever before. What is it that makes this still relevant to people of all ages today? Is it remembering those who gave their lives? Is it respect for those who continue to serve in the armed forces? For me, it is remembering the history that led up to the events of each war we have been involved in. It is keeping the knowledge of why these things happened so that our society does not continue to go down these paths. Yes, I remmeber the lives lost - my great grandmother lost two brothers in the World War One and my grandfather trained at Canungra and fought in World War Two. On the other side, my paternal grandfather was put into an internment camp during World War Two because he was Italian and we were, after all, at war with Italy. I strongly believe we need to keep our Anzac traditions and keep teaching our children the history behind these events, because we do not ever want war on that scale again. Too many lives lost, too many families destroyed. Too many people damaged. Lest we forget.

I have been wondering for some time now about the construction of the Canungra Bypass, which has been on the council and state government agenda since 2004. Now that the population growth of the town is increasing at a rapid rate we are experiencing higher traffic flows through town and we need the Bypass more than ever. There seems to be an increase of heavy vehicles through town and there is difficulty of vehicles entering Christie Street most mornings and afternoons. I drive a school bus and have had to wait up to five minutes some afternoons to safely cross the road here. Can anyone tell us what is happening with plans for the Bypass. I can’t seem to get a reasonable answer from our local members, either council or state government. If anyone has an interest in this project, either for or against, please contact me on 0408 755 820. Leigh Carlson

Eat
Local
Farmers are again the stars of volume two of the popular Scenic Rim EAT LOCAL cookbook, which profiles 26 new local farmers, growers and makers and will be launched at an event in Canungra. Authors Brenda Fawdon and Christine Sharp return for the second edition, an initiative of the Scenic Rim Regional Council, with support from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund. EAT LOCAL Volume 2 will be launched in Canungra at My Country Escape on Friday 11th May. In keeping with the eat local theme, Canungra Hub will provide canapes featuring local ingredients and wines from O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards will be available to taste. As well as profiling 26 farmers, growers and makers, EAT LOCAL Volume 2 also features more than 60 new recipes, created by chef and Eat Local Week ambassador Brenda Fawdon, to showcase the delicious array of food available in the region. The Scenic Rim is emerging as Queensland’s most exciting food and farming destination, producing a bounty of food and drinks, from vegetables to beef to finger limes, macadamias, honey, coffee, wine, cheese and olives. Co-authors Brenda and Christine live on Tamborine Mountain and are wholehearted supporters of local produce. They say the process of writing two books about local food and farming has put them in touch with passionate producers whose work is inspired by creating fresh ingredients. “Having met so many decent, hardworking people in making the first volume, we were excited to get to know another 26 farmers, growers and makers, and to

create this book of recipes inspired by their amazing produce, grown ad raised with love, right on our doorstep,” says Christine. “Many mornings during the winter of 2017, Brenda and I drove along country roads in darkness, following the car’s GPS, watching the sky brighten with the imminent dawn. “We met farmers, and their families, people who would soon become friends, and we’d hear their stories and see the evidence of their life’s work. “What a privilege to meet the people who grow the food that ends up on our plates. And what a difference it makes to our appreciation of that food, knowing something of the care and toil involved in the process – from seed to plant to harvest to market.” After the farm visits Brenda set out to create recipes that would make the ingredients sing. The book features more than 60

recipes, some more challenging than others, which showcase the breadth and quality of food and beverages available in the Scenic Rim. “Our hope for this book is that food lovers, both residents of and visitors to the region, will fall in love with the Scenic Rim and our produce,” says Brenda. “We are so fortunate to live in a place both fertile and beautiful, where we have access to quality fresh produce, and where we can get to know our creative and talented local farmers, growers and makers.” Scenic Rim Mayor, Cr Greg Christensen, says the first EAT LOCAL book was so well received by everyone who read it that the Council was intent on making the second book a reality. “This is such a powerful way to tell the story of our region, our fertile fields, our amazing producers and the delicious array of food and drinks, which are created in the Scenic Rim,” says Cr Christensen. “People are often surprised to learn that so much production is happening literally on the doorstep of Brisbane and the Gold Coast. EAT LOCAL Volume 2 shines a light on another 26 talented men and women whose hard work, skill and dedication provides us with the ultimate benefit – health and sustenance. “Brenda and Christine have once again created a stunning book, which is both inspiring and delicious!” RSVPs for the My Country Escape launch are essential. Scott Buchholz with recipents of the Local Sporting Champions grants
Sports Stars To Score Funding!
Young athletes from across the region are invited to apply for a $500 Local Sporting Champions grant to support their involvement in sport. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz has called on young sports stars-intraining to apply for financial assistance to help them achieve their dreams. “We have some hugely talented young sports people training hard in our local area. But I know the cost of travelling and competing in championships can hit the family budget pretty hard,” Mr Buchholz said. “These grants are one way we can support and encourage our young people to work hard and achieve their sporting dreams. That’s why I’m inviting young athletes, coaches and officials to apply for a Local Sporting Champions grant in the latest funding round which closes on 30th June,” Mr Buchholz said. “These $500 grants provide financial assistance to athletes, coaches and officials, to go towards travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when attending endorsed state, national or international championships.” “The number of Local Sporting Champions grants is limited in each round - and it is important that athletes, coaches and officials apply for the financial support before their event.” For more information about Local Sporting Champions grants and to apply, visit www.ausport.gov.au/LSC

Weekend of Art and Food for Open Studios
Art studios across the region will open their doors once again for the 10-year anniversary of the Open Studios project, which kicks off during May and culminates in a weekend of art and food in Canungra. Last year’s pop-up studios in Canungra were so successful that they’ll be popping up again on the weedend of 2nd and 3rd June, with red flags marking nearby artists. Alongside these pop-ups, Kelly Lindsay is set to be an Artist in Residence at Trilogy Accounting located on Christie Street. Kelly is an Artist and an Educator with a deep connection to the natural environment of South East Queensland. Visitors will have the opportunity to view her paintings, drawings and prints, as well as take part in drawing their very own still-life subject, with all materials being provided. Artist Wendy Trulson, who has been an integral part of the Beechmont Open Studios for many years, is moving into the On Location workshops category and running a workshop titled Nature’s Bounty on Saturday 26th May from 10am to 4pm at the Beechmont Community Centre. Also inspired by the local landscape, Painter Dave Groom’s studio will be open at Beechmont, only a short 20-minute drive from Canungra. Here, visitors can admire his large feature paintings and view a special showcase of his new series of small, affordable oil paintings, as well as pastel and charcoal drawings.
Open Studios is a creative industry and cultural tourism initiative presented by Council with support from Arts Queensland’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), which encourages engagement with the arts through visits to artists’ studios. Along its 10-year journey, the project has seen over 1,200 local artists of all genres from across the region open their studio doors to the community. This year, studios from across the region will be open throughout May and early June offering workshops, demonstrations and art work for sale. Trails will feature throughout Eagle Heights, North Tamborine and Tamborine Mountain over two days on 5th and 6th May before the trail continues to Boonah (12th and 13th May), Beaudesert (19th and 20th May) and finishing up with Canungra/ Beechmont (2nd and 3rd June). Scenic Rim On Location Arts Workshops feature on 26th and 27th May. Colleen Lavender and Leeton Lee will be artists-in-residence at the Tamborine Mountain Showgrounds. Colleen created the fire pits that were used in all Shared Fire events and also created the stunning Fires on Top of Mountains fourpanelled sculpture unveiled at the Fire on Water event at Kooralbyn. Leeton was central to the Indigenous Fire Ceremony at Tamborine Mountain and at Kooralbyn. He also appeared as part of the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth

Intersection of Kidston and Christie Street. Image: Google Maps. Inset: A silent policeman.
WANTED: SILENT COP INFORMATION By Joyce Libke There was a “ Silent Cop” (also referred to as a ‘sleeping policeman’ or ‘traffic dome’) at the intersection of Kidston Street and Christie Street. At least in the mid 1950s there was. I know because I can remember running over it in the big black Plymouth - much to my embarrassment! Both roads were narrow strips of bitumen with dirt both sides. The ‘Silent Cop’ was a 40 cms across by 15 cms high dome made of concrete and/or metal which was placed on an intersection to guide motorists when making a right hand turn and there was no policeman on duty.
or out of the street to be on the correct side of the road rather than cut the corner. When did it disappear?? I have been told that when it was removed there was a metre long cone of metal under it that had kept it secured even when drivers did run over it. Please, can some of our older residents give us any information on this little piece of Canungra’s history. No use asking younger people - they just look blank when we mention ‘Silent Cop’ ?? It was an Australian icon (overseas there were neat little towers that did the same job). I have been told there was someone who regularly ran over it. Can anyone tell us who?
Silent cops were placed in the middle of street intersections in Australia at cross roads, and turning drivers were expected to drive around them when turning right. They were also placed in the centre of the terminating street at T-intersections to force drivers turning in

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
WEEDS WORKSHOP A workshop focusing on simple practises to help landowners manage and stop the spread of invasive weeds will be held at The Centre Beaudesert Saturday 12 May and The Cultural Centre Boonah Saturday 19 May. 8 am until 12.00 noon with morning tea provided.RSVP ago Ph 55405111.
RIVER TREES INITIATIVE Council is continuing this project for landowners who border waterways to help reduce erosion and improve water quality and bank stability.Up to 1000 free native tube stock plants are available upon application either on Ph 55405111 or www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/million-trees. Following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie last year a significant number of landholders saw valuable agricultural land eroded away so planting trees in strategic areas can help to reduce water velocity in times of flood hence protecting your land.

Specles – 66706. Black/Grey and White Greyhound Female – 9 years. Price: $315 Introducing Speckles, the ultimate in home addition who will not only be the ideal inclusion in colour trends because you would be Going Grey, but she is the most deserving of companion dogs who needs a forever home. Speckles has spent most of her life as a ‘paddock dog’ living only with Greyhounds and having little contact with people, so she would best suit a home with older children and no cats or small dogs. This beautiful, brown eyed, shy girl needs a special family who will be patient and nurturing with her as she learns about life indoors, unconditional love and rooms full of comfort and love. As a nine year old Greyhound, Speckles is really a ‘lounge lizard/couch potato’ who needs minimal exercise aside from daily enrichment walks. Once settled in her new home we expect Speckles will share some of the fabulous ‘Greyhound Only’ behaviours, such as Roaching (lying on back with legs in air), Nesting (rearranging bedding into piles), Souveniring (taking objects they like to their nest) Smiling (teeth barred in smile) and perhaps Teeth Chatting (excitement). If your family has the love to share and if you have an existing medium to large dog come along to our Gold Coast Rehoming Centre for a meet and greet. Greyhounds rehomed through the Animal welfare League Qld go home with a Going Grey handbook that offers advice and guidance on introducing your new Greyhound to your home and family life. Speckles is fully vet checked and de-sexed. Please call AWLQ on 55099000 to arrange a meeting or search Animal Welfare League website Queensland to see all our animals which are available for adoption. To meet any of the animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

Nature’s Gems
Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii) By Melissa Whitby Australia is home to a stunning array of Kingfisher species. Several species can be encountered in South-east Queensland and are all very different from each other in size and colour. My favourite would have to be the Forest Kingfisher. This kingfisher is distinguished by its deep blue head cap, white breast and blue tail. Male birds differ from female birds by having a complete white collar. Forest Kingfishers are easily identified in flight by distinctive white wing-spots. Similar species to the Forest Kingfisher in South-east Queensland is the Sacred Kingfisher, however, these birds differ to the Forest Kingfisher by being greener in colour and having no white wing spots. Forest Kingfishers are often seen singly or in pairs perched on overhead electrical wires. Their distinctive call can often give away their present before an observer sees them. This kingfisher species feeds on small reptiles such as skinks and its often seen flying up and down from its perch in the pursuit of food. Some of the best places to observe Forest Kingfishers are not always near water. Favoured habitat types include farmlands, open forest and woodland. The breeding season of the Forest Kingfisher is from about September to January. One of the most common nest sites of this kingfisher Forest Kingfisher species is an arboreal tree termite mound from very close to the ground to 20 metres high. Forest Kingfishers are very active around their nest sites and also very vocal. These beautiful kingfishers are not hard to see and some of the best places to look for them are whilst one is driving between Canungra and Beaudesert. Knowing their distinctive call is also another way of finding these stunning birds. For many years, I have looked at Forest Kingfishers and I never tire of looking at them. For anyone who reads this article and knows the birds, I am sure that you would agree. For those that have never seen a Forest Kingfisher, I guarantee the first time will take your breath away….

Hawk Moth (Cizara ardeniae)
By Susan Cully This Hawk Moth (family Sphingidae) shares its lineage with the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori, (family Bombycidae) and is one of the moths in the Bombycoid (super)family. Indeed this moth also spins silk, creating a felt like fabric on the soil, on which to lay its eggs. Hawk moths are often seen in the garden at dusk. They are superb fliers and feed voraciously on nectar. They feed while hovering rather than alighting on the flower. They are one of the few moths that can reach the nectar found in long tubular flowers. They are important pollinators, visiting many flowers in one night. At dusk they can often Hawk Moth. Photo: H Stevenson be glimpsed speeding away, silhouetted against the night sky, easily mistaken for a micro bat. Their wing design facilitates hover flight, with very fast wing beats, as well as strong, speedy flight. The adult moth has a wingspan of six centimetres. When at rest, the white edges of the wings and white bars across the wings and abdomen are aligned to form a single stripe across the moth. This may give effective camouflage, misleading the eye causing a predator to see the front and back as separate entities. The caterpillars have strongly coloured patterns displaying eye spots and contrasting patches, making them confusing and alarming to predators. The menacing look is enhanced in the larvae by the placement of an upright horn projecting from the tail end. It may cause a predator to look at the tail rather than the more vulnerable head. The horn is quite harmless. At its last moult, the coloration changes to diagonal patches of light and dark brown, which blend in well with the patches of light and shade on its food plant. When disturbed, the caterpillar lashes its head violently from side to side to scare predators. The adult caterpillar grows to six centimetres.
Million Paws Walk Biggest Doggie Day Out
The annual RSPCA walk to fight animal cruelty on Sunday 20th May 2018 in various locations around Australia. Introduced in 1996, the RSPCA Million Paws Walk has become a well loved and hugely popular event, with over 85 walks scheduled across the country. The walk is the RSPCA’s major annual opportunity to fundraise and the Million Paws celebration will be returning to Tamborine Mountain on 20th May 2018 at Geissmann Sports Oval. Celebrate the 19th annual walk held on the mountain! The event will feature a short and long walk with water stops for pets and people. There will be a jumping castle, face painting, food and coffee vans, entertainment by local artists, raffle, competitions and more. This year organisers would love to see dogs dressed for the occasion with prizes for the best dressed dogs (and if the owners want to look as good well). This is always a great day out for the dogs and people involved, walk at your own pace and bring older (or smaller dogs in prams, dog trailers or in your handbag! Event registration is open at 8.30am and the walk starts at 10.30am, or you can register online at millionpawswalk.com.au.

The Sun is passing through the earthy paddocks of Taurus. This is not a showy month. It’s a month for quietly getting things done. It’s a month for smelling the roses and appreciating all the little moments of grace that turn up, often unseen, in a day. Stay with life’s simple pleasures.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
The prodigal child has to go out and do her thing in order to be able to return home in an authentic mood of celebration. As much as you long to return to the past, you can’t. There’s work to do to get your creative endeavours up and running. Finish the good things you have started.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough The Commonwealth Games and the school holidays are over and we have returned to the normal peaceful life, living in Canungra and district, means for each of us. Although there were some negatives which came from the Games, (and we are always ready to criticise) the ongoing positives will long remain for the Gold Coast and for Queensland. We should take lessons from the men and women who performed at the Commonwealth Games, such as the time and effort they have put into developing their skills to be able to compete at the highest level. It is nothing for an athlete to spend years of their life training and learning, to be able to perform, sometimes for just seconds or up to hours. Christianity may have its effects on people in much the same way. Perhaps for some, Christianity will come as something exciting and new and then fade out of their daily life, only to be important on certain occasions such as Christmas, Easter, Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals. For others, Christianity may be like training and learning. It is endless and can develop further every day. How can this be? Attending church on Sunday is not going to teach us all there is to know. The Bible is the centre of Christianity and there is much we can learn from it. We at St Luke’s are very fortunate to have Rev Valerie our priest, as our coach and trainer. Her expertise is invaluable. If you are looking for someone to help you along, or to start a journey, just drop into St Luke’s on any Sunday morning at 7.45am. You will be made most welcome by those of us in training now, and there will always be plenty of help and support for your training program.

Canungra Owls Soccer Club By Greg Mathers The Canungra Owls would like to put a massive shout out to all the mothers who support their children, their grandchildren and even children that are not their own, to participate in football with our fantastic Club. Without you ... well, without you none of what we do would be possible. During May we have the opportunity to give our mothers their own special day. This is the perfect time to say thanks for everything they have done for you, everything that they do for you and everything that they will do for you. Some mothers have children who need to go to different places at the same time, often requiring excellent coordination and considerable trust, to place their most valuable possession in the care of another. These are the ladies who volunteer their time to make sure: your uniform is ready to go for the next game, there is a half time snack, that other parents are aware of changes to fixtures, that the canteen is staffed and available for use, that you brushed your teeth, that you didn’t walk dirt in the house, that you say please and thank you when asking and receiving, that you’re gracious in defeat and humble in victory. These are the ladies who work hard to ensure that our society is structured for children to grow, learn and be successful with their own choice in the future. These ladies are to be valued for their input, respected for their efforts and cherished for their support. Every year, on the second Sunday of May, we get to celebrate all mothers and tell them what they mean to us. They mean heaps and heaps and heaps (make sure you tell them). And even though we celebrate mothers on only one day of the year, we are very thankful for what they do all year. Without out them, we all wouldn’t be here. For those fathers that are filling in for mothers as best they can: well done! For those unable to say thanks to a mother, remember them fondly. The good times were great and the not so good times were lessons learned the hard way. From our club to all the mothers – THANK YOU and Happy Mother’s Day
Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby Thanks to all who attended the Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre’s AGM on 10th April 10th. The Committee remains relatively unchanged but with the fantastic addition of Vicki Raynor as our Treasurer. George Dalby happily stood down from the position as his wife is a ‘ Treasurers Nightmare’! I am sure Vicki will whip her (me) in to shape! Thanks heaps Vicki and thanks to Keer and Canungra Times for advertising our urgent request! Our bookings agent remains Alesia McCabe and our Hall is available at very reasonable rates for all manner of events - phone 0402 167 966. The next trivia night will be towards the end of May so keep an eye out on Foodworks notice board for a date. Sponsored as always by Foodworks.
