Canungra Christmas Lights winner at Franklin Way, Canungra
The high standard of entries in the 2012 Canungra Chamber of Commerce Christmas Lights Competition made the judges decision a difficult one, Chamber President, Shane Stevenson said. “The judges congratulate everyone who entered for the effort made - it was a difficult decision but in the end the winner was unanimous in both categories,” he said. “There were a number of very impressive entries and it was equally difficult to decide on second and third placings.”

More Millions For Flood Restoration Watch Your Mate’s Back
Council has awarded two more construction contracts totalling almost $3 million as part of its flood rebuilding program. The tender for Construction Package No.9 was awarded to RDS Roadworks for $1,789,141, while Pensar Civil won the tender for Construction Package No. 10 for $1,003,211. The contracts form part of more than $50 million in restoration works approved by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) and funded under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint Federal and State government initiative. “The level of restoration works being carried out across the region is unprecedented and will deliver a more resilient transport network that will see us well into the future,” Mayor John Brent said. “As part of this process, Council is determined to deliver value-for-money outcomes for both our residents and the taxpayer. “To this end, Council has funded more than $3 million worth of complementary works in its 2012/13 Budget. “The purpose of this is to deliver road improvements in conjunction with restoration projects where it represents value to the community or a long-term improvement plan was in place.”

Dr Andy Rees BMBS, FRACGP, Canungra Valley Medical One of my patients was sent in by his wife (as quite a few blokes are). In this case, she had noticed some moles on his back that she didn’t like the look of. His wife marked the offending lesions with a pen and he dutifully came to me for review. What she had seen was “chaos”. All I had to do then was to look for “clues”. The lesion in the photograph shows many of the classic signs of melanoma – a variety of colours, black dots and a blue grey veil. The lesion was removed to get a biopsy result from pathology. My patient is fortunate, his melanoma is thin enough that surgical removal alone will cure it. In a few months, it might well have become thicker and invasive – with possibly quite rapidly fatal results. I believe it is no exaggeration to say that his wife saved his life. Watch your mate’s back. If you see “chaos” anywhere on the skin, then get a GP to look for “clues”. My thanks to my patient for consenting to me sharing his story and the clinical photograph.

CT’s Movie Review - Skyfall
By Chloe Pickard It’s been years between sequels, and Skyfall does not disappoint. Daniel Craig has been consistently charming and dangerous as Bond, and here he brings a new depth to the character as he again faces betrayal. Someone is attacking M15, and their motives are related to its director M. Bond must unmask the threat before all of British intelligence can be brought down. Judi Dench is still brilliant as M, Javier Bardem brings menace and flair to his villian role and there are some familiar characters with new twists. The opening credit sequence is mesmerising and there’s plenty of interesting action. While the two hours and 23 minutes might seem hefty even for a Bond film, you won’t notice it’s gone by. Page 4

In Brief...
Canungra School of Arts building
Canungra’s History… Education In Canungra
By Chloe Pickard There have been several schools in and around Canungra before the existing Canungra State School was built and they have all played an important part in the past and present community. In 1844, the first teacher Miss Kathleen Massie rode from Tamborine to her students at Wonglepong School. The school was the first in the area and was followed by Sarabah School, opened in 1892. In 1889, Canungra State School officially opened. Teaching took place in the old School of Arts building until termites caused a shift to where the current School of Arts is now. In 1911, a proper school building was built on Finch Road. Students were taught by Miss Monaghan and Miss Rauchle. The school was visited by Queensland’s Governor Sir Matthew Nathan in 1922. Witheren School was built in 1899 and closed in 1965. Flying Fox School was opened in 1920 and closed in 1962, with students catching a bus to the newly relocated Canungra State School. The rural travelling school came to Canungra in 1927 and 1952, teaching both adults and children domestic science and manual training. The school could be found at the Canungra Railway Yards. In 1962, Canungra State School was moved to the site of Franklin Sawmill and Canungra Station where it still stands today. It was the final school to have been built and has taught generations of Canungra residents. More information on these schools and those involved in them can be found in the Canungra Information Centre.
Eight Week Weight Loss And Fitness Challenge Come and join Steve Crook’s third challenge and lose those unwanted kilos put on over the Christmas break. Previous winners in the last two 12 week challenges lost 18kg and 17kg. In eight weeks, if you work hard and eat right you too could lose lots of weight and tone up. Steve said this challenge is for any level of fitness and even if you have no weight to lose and you just want to get fit or tone up then this is also for you. Each week Steve sends a weekly program for participants to follow and to stay in the competition all you have to do is train with him once a week in either a group class or a one-on-one session. Don’t put it off any longer, if your New Year’s resolution was to get fit and stay healthy, come and register on Friday 18th Jan 2013 at Moriarty Park Hall at 5.30pm. Steve will give a talk to all new participants about diet and training on registration night. Cost to register is $15 and to receive weekly workouts participants need to attend one session a week - which means you can stay in the competition for as little as $12 a week. To register or for more information call Steve Crook on 0431 208 588.

Council Comment
By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Well 2013 is here and on reflection 2012 was a very positive year from a SRRC perspective, with the highlight being the gazettal of the Bromelton State Development Plan which now allows for the two major landholders out there to lodge their applications for development. This site just outside Beaudesert is designed to create the largest privately owned inland port in the Southern Hemisphere which is not only of regional significance but a nation building project. It will provide employment and ultimate economic prosperity for the region in years to come. On top of this SRRC has continued to show a strong financial position in the eyes of the Auditor General and needs to continue this focus in the upcoming year. DESPICABLE VANDALISM IN TOWN It is so very disappointing to see this occurring in Moriarty Park and other areas around the town by a minority who have no respect for our beautiful town. I urge all residents to be extremely vigilant over the school holiday period. Contact Policelink on 131 444 if you notice any suspicious behaviour around the town. So many residents donate both time and money towards the assets at Moriarty Park to ensure we have sporting opportunities for all in town and it is so distressing to see this damage and lack of respect. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS To all residents who decorated their properties, thank you for the time and effort to bring the Christmas spirit to town, they all looked amazing. Congratulations to the winners of the Christmas Lights competition and I believe the judges had a very difficult job deciding on the winners as they were all spectacular. FLOOD RECOVERY WORK CONTINUES Just prior to Christmas, Package No 9 was adopted by Council and the successful tender company advised. Much of this work is to occur on sections of Illinbah Rd, Upper Coomera Rd, Flying Fox Rd and Biddaddaba Rd and should start early in the New Year. CONTACT ME I will be on leave until Monday, 21 January, so in the event of a council emergency or any issue concerning council please phone 5540 5111 and you will be assisted.

Canungra Information and Historical Association
By Robyn Fortescue Another year flew by for the Association - here is an except from outgoing President Shane O’Reilly’s Report as Chair: “The year in review: Well after two and possibly three years of saying how poor the tourism trade was and how poor – even unfair the weather was etc. – now we can now see some light and some sunshine. Many are claiming their efforts have helped produce this increase in tourist numbers – the Government, Tourism Queensland, RACQ, even the Scenic Rim Council! The fact is they are all right to some degree at least. It has been a concerted effort – and so we have a slight resurgence and an increased profile for tourism generally and a rightful recognition of it as being an important contributor to the Queensland economy; a recognition which is long overdue. Centre Operations: I could understandably say that the increase in sales from the Centre in the past year is a result of the increased visitation of tourists. Probably no one would argue that
however they may not be aware of the continuous and focused efforts of the Centre staff to source, stock, and sell local products that appeal to local residents as gift purchases as well as tourists looking for a souvenir. The staff should be commended for this strategy and its delivery as well as the results. So well done all round on the retail front and I’m sure the service side would have been excellent as well. Many thanks to all who work in the centre, your contribution is not highly paid but it is highly valued and the many people you help each year will remember the region more warmly and richly because of you. It was with great pleasure and some relief that our local Councillor – Virginia West was returned in the Council elections. We need Councillors with established relationships and an understanding of the wider community and as such it was great we have Virginia back supporting our Centre once again. Elections: On a somewhat sadder note we need to elect a new Vice-President after the passing of long-term
Shane O’Reilly
supporter Brian Kennedy earlier in the year. This vacancy may be a catalyst for others to consider positions on the committee – like President for example! In all fairness and honesty, I do believe organisations are best served by these positions rotating and I can’t say there has been much of that recently at CIHA. I would be most happy to step aside if anyone wanted to try this out even for just a year or two! Regardless of the election outcomes I wish the new committee every success in the year ahead and wish everyone present a very happy and peaceful Christmas.”
After several years as chairman, retiring president Shane O’Reilly received a vote of thanks from the new committee for his dedication to the Association. Despite his busy schedule he has managed to always be available to keep an eye out and offered sage advice to the Centre and its members whenever needed. The new committee is Robyn Fortescue (President), Tamlyn Geiger (Vice President), Anne King (Secretary), Samantha Wilson (Treasurer). Sam continues in this role after several years. Robyn has also been secretary for several years. Membership to the Association is not expensive and is a valuable resource for school children, geneologists, history buffs – please support this resource with your membership to maintain the hundreds of photos, memorabilia and “artefacts” of times past. Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month every two months. Dates will be posted in the Canungra Times. Call the Centre for more information on 5543 5156.

From My Window...
A new year is greeted with a sense of expectation, a chance to start afresh and sometimes, a sigh of relief. I have to say 2012 was tumultuous. Full of ups and downs - loss, grief, sadness - balanced by love, happiness and a welcome sense of peace. It was a year the community came together to raise money for families affected by cancer, through RimFest and other fundraising efforts. I don’t think I have ever been prouder of being in this community as I have that day in Moriarty Park when so many people gave their time, services and money to assist others who are struggling. I would like to thank the people who have supported me through the last year - all the people who contribute to The Canungra Times every month - Mel, Virginia, Suzanne, David, Bren, Ray, Kim and Steve; the staff who help put the paper together - Vey, Ingrid, Julie, Jenny and Chloe; our advertisers and our readers without whom there would be no Canungra Times! Thank you also to everyone who has taken the time to say that they enjoy reading the paper, your kindness means so much. Most of all, I want to thank my children, Heather and Sophie, who have been patient beyond belief, even when it seems like Mum has to work all the time! Have a great year, everyone, and remember: “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” - Edith Lovejoy Pierce

The Canungra Times, January 2013 - Happy New Year!
Letters to the Editor The Kindness of Friends and Strangers Hi Keer, I’ve just seen your ‘From My Window’ for December and wanted to thank you for closing the year in such a positive way. Your words really touched me and reminded me of some tough times this past year that were made easier thanks to the kindness of friends and on a few occasions strangers. Have a great Chrissy and New Year! Best wishes, Name and address withheld What Constitutes a Rest Area? In a recent article in your bulletin, it was stated that a new rest area had been completed at the top of Morans Falls in Lamington National Park, at a cost of $52 000. I would like to congratulate those who dedicated money towards improvements for the public who visit this park, but I feel that their aims have sadly been thwarted. It is true that the area in question has been landscaped. The result is park-like, with rock walls, manufactured paving stones, imported turf and purchased plants. The money has certainly been spent. However, there is no shelter from the rain, in this area with a higher rainfall than most of the rest of S.E. Queensland; there are no longer any tables provided for picnickers; the only seating is on the pavers themselves - hot in the midday sun; there is no shade; and there are certainly no toilets. How can it be called a Rest Area? It appears to me that the unnamed forces which have been reducing access and facilities for the public at Lamington NP for the past twenty years have had yet another win. Colleybee, Jimboomba

Year of Growth for Canungra Scouts It’s been a fun and adventure filled year for the Canungra Scout Group. Cubs (7 – 11 years) really proved they know their stuff. They hiked, climbed, camped, swam and played their way through a year of awesome new adventures. The highlights were the combined camp with Tamborine Mountain Girl Guides and the homemade hover craft they all got a turn at using. The Scouts’ (11 – 15 years) focus was on achieving their Pioneer level badges, so that the scouts attending the 2013 Australian Jamboree are prepared. The younger Scouts not attending this Jamboree are now one step closer to achieving higher badges themselves. The highlight for their year was when they built themselves a canoe out of a piece of corrugated iron. The Venturer section (15 – 18 years) spent the year working on building up their section, as they’re still a fairly new group. Combined with the Nerang group they’ve done a large selection of camps and activities, working to achieve their Queen Scout Award. Their highlight was Nighthawk, an overnight hike through the bush on the Darling Downs, and a favourite event of the year happened in the first weekend of
By Ashleigh Bartlett December when the Venturers descend on Noosa for a weekend of fun on the water. Canungra Scout Group has seen a rise in youth members this year, but with a rise in youth members the need for more adult leaders is important. If you enjoy learning new things, spending time outdoors, working with young people and have some spare time we would love to speak to you about becoming a Scout leader. With members from Canungra, Mt Tamborine, Beechmont, Mt Nathan and Tamborine, the Group could not have achieved all it did without the help of the local businesses and community groups, particularly Canungra Show Society. 2013 will be a huge year starting with Australian Jamboree, where more than 15,000 Scouts from around the world will travel to Maryborough for two weeks of excitement and entertainment, commencing on New Year’s Day. Look out for Joey Scouts to commence in early 2013 for 6 to 8 year olds. For more information on the youth membership or becoming a leader please contact Group Leader Leigh Bartlett on 5543 4323 or email canungrascouts@ hotmail.com .

Legal Talk Why ‘Simple Wills’
are not enough
By Suzanne Roberts Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers What is the difference between having proper, holistic estate planning and just having simple Wills? You get what you pay for. Estate planning is becoming an increasingly important area of law. Superannuation balances when couples with life insurance and more complex asset structures, means that simply having very basic Wills is not adequate for many people Estate planning is more complex than simply having a basic Will. It involves dealing with all of your assets in the most appropriate way and ensuring that after your death, your family are properly provided for and costs are minimised. Some people may be reluctant to spend the money to have their estate planning looked after properly. Unfortunately, by not having a proper estate plan, most people risk increased costs and trouble for family members and their estate after their death. Some of the main downfalls with simple Wills (even those prepared by a lawyer) are: • Dealing with non estate assets (such as assets subject to joint tenancies, assets held in companies or trusts which cannot be left under the Will of an individual). • A failure to deal with superannuation adequately or at all. • Dealing with assets that are subject to a mortgage without achieving the result the client intended e.g. unless otherwise stated in the Will, a property left to a beneficiary will pass to them still subject to the mortgage. • A failure to consider the tax effects for the beneficiaries in relation to gifts received – potentially resulting in beneficiaries receiving an unequal benefit when you thought they would receive the same value. Some of the more common issues with Do-It-Yourself Will kits which cause increased costs in relation to the administration of the estate are:
Page 14
The Canungra Times, January 2013 - Happy New Year!
• Failing to deal with all assets of the estate which results in a partial intestacy. This means that your assets will be divided under the law which is not always how you want. • Gifts of specific items that are not held by the deceased at the date of the death. • Specific bequests where there is not enough money in the estate. • The Will is not signed correctly – which can make it invalid. Proper estate planning requires specialist advice and the co-operation of your lawyer and accountant or financial advisor. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
With Jupiter in Gemini, there is no escaping issues of power. Consider the words, ‘power over’, ‘power with’ and ‘empowerment’. Others know more about themselves than we do. To respect that and get out of the role of all-seeing saviour, is a blessing for all concerned.

Your nature is to reach out to others emotionally. If it’s not a cup of soup, then it’s something akin to one that you offer. This works when there is genuine need and yours is a genuine offering. If it is habitual and unconscious, giving goes out of kilter. Be passionate and shine.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)
By getting really clear about who you are and what you want to share with the world, you get traction. By getting traction, you open up the possibility to spread your wings and taste freedom. Experience all this in the present moment. To be too future oriented robs us of energy.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Canungra Rainfall - December 2012 Area
Be prepared for a journey that moves from feeling like your feet are rooted in the earth, to feeling like you have wings to fly and are floating on a thermal. The more grounded you are, the higher your energy can go. It’s one of life’s paradoxes. Wholeness is what is required. The intensity of emotion, though at the time uncomfortable, is what provokes truth. When life applies pressure and makes us vulnerable, it does so to deepen our quest, to deepen out insight. Once truth is established, it’s time to celebrate. Take your hard-earned truth to town.

Your Stars - January 2013
Now is for figuring out the overview, the meta-position. Though you might have a little less to show in terms of material results, the kind of work that is going on deep in your heart, is worth more. Life has shared its truth and it’s making you think. Re-position yourself.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Slowly events are shifting you into a position of power. Whether you want it or not, from here you will discover that the richness of contact, lights up your life in an unexpected way. Let others get their head around your sense of the big picture. Love is a revolutionary state.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
Saturn is slowly shifting to a new part of Scorpio, a new decan. Whereas he has been being purely Plutonian and overtly regenerative, he now becomes more reflective and Neptunian. Saturn always brings realness. He is beginning his work on your longings and dreams.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Venus is passing through Sagittarius. She offers us the option of delight. If we accept her fruits and savour them the way they deserve to be savoured, nourishment follows – and delight. If we don’t, then we feel a hollow feeling that turns us into consumers. Nourish yourself.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Pluto moves to ten degrees Capricorn. The journey of regeneration changes flavour. From feeling like you are undergoing surgery without anaesthetic, it shifts to delight. Suffering is not a prerequisite for personal growth. Welcome in the joy of life’s tiny precious moments.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
There’s no avoiding the fact that it is adventure time. Uranus is in Aries and will be for a while. He’s been dithering around, going backwards, taking you into trepidation, or introspection. Now he goes direct - and you come out jumping. Energize yourself by taking action.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
There is nothing better than dipping into the current of quality communication to sooth the heart and soul. Forget quantity – go for depth. If you can get both, then be sure to celebrate it heart-fully. One side-effect of a rich meeting, is learning. Let love tip you on your axis.

Market Set to Recover in 2013
Industry experts are predicting the real estate market will start to recover in 2013 as some of the factors that pushed house prices down in 2010 and 2011 turn around. Economic forecaster, BIS Shrapnel said New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory are already showing signs of recovery. BIS Shrapnel senior manager Angie Zigomanis said the recovery is expected to eventually gain traction through 2013 as continued growth in resource investment spending eventually flows through to other sectors of the economy.” “With the local economic and employment outlook becoming more positive, and some stabilisation and improvement overseas, purchasers are forecast to wade back into the market in greater numbers, translating to greater sales volumes and a pick-up in price growth over 2013/14 and into 2014/15.” Early in December Real Estate Institute of Queensland Chairman, Pamela Bennett said the demand for affordable homes is strengthening across the State as buyers take advantage of ideal buying conditions. “The numbers of houses sales under
$350,000 across Queensland increased 24 per cent between the September quarter this year and the same period last year,” she said. Local real estate agent, Monique Morcus of Aussie Lifestyle Properties said the enquiry rate for rentals and sales increased in the last quarter of 2012 and she expects this trend to continue during 2013. “Right now in Canungra properties are selling due to sellers correcting their sale price to meet the market price,” she said. “Basically, if the seller is willing to price their property for the current conditions there are buyers out there. “The last quarter of 2012 saw the market pick up, as cuts to interest rates have made mortgages more affordable and this is reflected in the number of enquiries that are translating into sales.” “It’s definitely a buyers’ market and if properties are priced correctly they are selling.” According to www.realestate.com.au the median house price in Canungra has risen from $240,000 in 2003 to $377,500 in 2012. The median house price in Canungra peaked at $407,500 in 2007.

Sport Moriarty Park News Thanks Canungra! While preparing for last month’s Canungra Carols at Moriarty Park, one wondered why we do it. There’s been another window broken - why should we work to raise money for repairs? The graffiti is still on the wall where it usually appears. It’ll probably rain and no one will come. There’s no chance we’ll do this again next year, is the tale of woe. We have a membership of nine volunteers and not everybody can attend every function, so it is nine minus absentees. If only we had another few hands to help! No, the challenge is too great, an overpowering force that pervades every corner of our thoughts until... We go through the jobs. Aside from the nine volunteers, there’s Sandy, giving her best to make it happen and Layne has the stage to erect. Even the kids pitch in! Tony has again donated the food so we have some eats to offer the crowd. The Council has given us a grant to make this a show. The sound and light men arrive and set up. It looks good when things are happening but we’ve only a maximum of nine helping hands, so do we have time to make
By Mike Cecil this a show? The sky looks dark and the rain uncertain. We don’t have enough help to do the cooking, serving, or even dish washing, but we’re beyond the point of no return! Then there is a greeting and Bev walks in followed by Abby, Dale, Leigh, Rick and Mary. The numbers swell and a few more empty spaces are filled. The singers run through their paces, perform brilliantly and breathe the spirit of Christmas, while an appreciative crowd gathers in numbers. I think we can just manage to cover the jobs with the help of our willing band of volunteers. What would we have done without them? At the end of the singing and dancing, it’s been a success and ideas for 2013 creep into our heads. Yes it’s all wonderful and all seems worthwhile. Pete has done the washing up and emptied the bins, as he always does, and suddenly the meaning of community springs to mind. We will carry on with our work and thank the community for their support and care to help us maintain our beautiful park. From the Moriarty Park Committee THANKS CANUNGRA!!!
