Museum of Materials

Re-visualizing the Urban precint of Sanskar Kendra and Tagore Hall in Ahmedabad city

Porject type: Final year Thesis project Guide: Prof. Pratyush Shankar Site: Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India Site Area: 42000 msq

SITE INTERPRETATION The site is loaded in terms of its context. It sits on the banks of Sabarmati river and falls in the precint of Sanskar Kendra and Tagore Hall, also oppositite to the National Institute of Design (NID)

BRIEF There happens to be an urban responsibility on the site from the cultural settings and the historical edifaces. The idea is to construct the Material Museum in a way such that it acts as a mediator to its surroundings. CONCEPT Leaking the grid of pilotis from Sanskar Kendra on the site and establishing a sense of order from Tagore Hall. The idea is to extract elements from both buildings and create a hybrid of both in terms of its spatial constrcucts and physical form.

Exploring spatial strategies through tunnels and bridges

Exploring spatial stratergies by crafting spaces w.r.t functions

Exploring spatial stratergies through primary ambulatory connectivity

Superimposing stratergies to articulate form

Programmatic InterpretationUrban level: Activating the dying precinct of Sanskar Kendra and Tagore Hall by Re-visualizing the urban square and introducing an ambition to it. The aim is to establish a pragmatic yet philosophical narrative among the institutions and the cultural setting.

Material Museum: The building tectonics, showcase a collage/ composition, as if the materials constructing/sculpting the museum are themselves on display, making the building a monolith structure, yet a fragmented assemblage. The goal is to re-introducing materiality through the Material Museum in a way such that, it acts as a mediator between the 2 institutes and the city.

Urban ParametersUrban Zoning

– Developing the landscape into an Urban Park The existing site has 2 gardens. The barren land currently caters to functions such as parking space, playing ground for the people from the slums, etc

Accessibility & Connectivity

– Break the constraint of accessibility both internally and Externally . The access to the precinct is only from the main road, which bifurcates to more road networks. There is only one road connecting the two institutes.

Designing an Institute of Ecology and research in the Aravallis hills Porject type: Free studio project Faculty: Prof. Pratyush Shankar, Prof. Pragya Shankar, Prof. Aashna Patel Site: Pavagadh, Gujarat, India

SITE INTERPRETATION The site is loaded in terms of its context. It sits on the banks of Vadatalav lake in Pavagadh within ranges of the last bit of the aravalli mountains.

CONCEPT The site being extremely sensitive, the idea is to merge with the landscape and create a subtle subterraninan structure bleanding with the contours. The goal is to trace the existing contours and integrate them to be a part of the design process making the institute a part of the existing exo-system on the site.

Designing a Visitors Interpretation Centre in Champaner city

Porject type: Free studio warm-up exercise Faculty: Prof. Pratyush Shankar, Prof. Pragya Shankar, Prof. Aashna Patel Site: Champaner, Gujarat, India

SITE INTERPRETATION The site is loaded in terms of its context. It is sandwitched between Jama Mosque and the Citadel of Champaner City. The site has a backdrop of the Pavagadh hills and lies in close proximity with some historical mughal period edifaces.

CONCEPT

The rise and fall of Champaner Rise : Exploring and discovering the cultural history embedded in the city. Fall : Celebrating a feeling of nothingness, being amidst the traces of ruins, disconnected with the context and its reality.

DESIGN PROCESS There are two parallel walls piercing through the landscape. The Thicker wall consists of functions tucked inside. The Aim is to Connect and disconnect with the existing context, narrating the rise and fall of champaner by articulating spaces withing the institute and around the institue by intriducing a cultural landscape.

Urban Condensers Workshop in Spain

SITE INTERPRETATION The site is a prime location called Plaza del Carmen and it is situated right across the famous Gran via street in Madrid, Spain.

The central core acting as verticle circulation

CONCEPT The concept has been derived from the easy going Spanish culture that encourages activities of leisure in public spaces so as to increase the safety, security and the social interaction. The project includes spaces that are active during the day time as well as the night time. The aim is to have a play of light and shadow as well and to provide vibrant colors and materials to enhance the character of the space

Conceptual form showing volumes The aim is to use the surrounding, the form and the material to create an urban insert in this plaza, both for the locals as well as the tourists. The spaces here are a mix of all types suited for all types of age groups.
