After the success and fun of 2016’s trial Cook-Off at NFOL, the Camping and Caravanning Club is launching Club Campsite Cook of the Year 2017 - in association with CADAC, the Club’s Eat Local sponsor - and want you to take part. To find our most enthusiastic, talented and keen campsite cooks, the Canoe-Camping Club will be holding our own heat at the National Families’ Meet in Hereford on Saturday 27th May. The winner of our section event will win a Cadac Carri Chef Barbecue worth £185. In August 2017, all region/section winners’ recipes will be judged by the Eat Local team at HQ, and eight winners invited to take part in the exciting cook-off final at the Cadac stand, NFOL at 4.30 on Saturday 26th August 2017. The overall winner will be presented with a Club Cook of the Year Trophy and a fantastic patio barbecue. The winning recipe will also be published in the Eat Local pages of the magazine. There are fantastic runner-up prizes too. So, how do you get involved? The essence of the competition is to demonstrate skill and creativity in producing a simple campsite meal beyond burgers and sausages. We are asking entrants to send us their recipe for one main course meal. This meal must be a camping-friendly recipe, one that is possible to prepare and cook at your pitch on a bbq grill or gas stove. (No ovens, microwaves or electric appliances allowed) The actual cooking time (not including prep) must be 30 minutes or under. The recipes will be judged on suitability for campsite cooking, creativity, and in particular the judges will be looking for a meal that embraces the spirit of our Eat Local campaign, whether it’s using a fresh local, seasonal ingredient, incorporates a regional cheese, beer or fruit or perhaps just taking inspiration from a regional dish or flavour. From easy but tasty one pan suppers, exciting salads, vegetarian feast a fabulous fish dish, great grilled meats to pasta with a twist... anything goes, we are looking to be inspired! Entrants are asked to submit details of their proposed meal via e-mail using the form on our website. Closing date: Saturday April 29th 5
A Trail of Two Rivers WORDS BY TONY SMITH
The West Country Group is due to complete the journey down the Warwickshire Avon in July. We began this trip two years ago on the South Stratford Canal and have subsequently paddled through Stratford, Bidford and Evesham to arrive last September at Pershore. This year we will carry on from Pershore and paddle to Tewkesbury where we will leave the Avon and join the Severn. Our final destination for the weekend will be Upton on Severn. When you descend from the Avon to the Severn you don’t just changes rivers; you also change the scenery, the scale and — some would say — even the mood. Behind you lies the open pastoral backdrop of the Avon whilst ahead the Severn banks are often high and give a sense of remoteness and detachment from the surrounding land. Paddling on mid-summer river water levels, it will be difficult to imagine that the debris spiked to the tops of trees and far above our heads came from the river when it was in flood not that long ago. The locks on the Severn can be huge with nearby Upper Lode Lock measuring in at a whopping 80.77 meters long, 9.27 meters wide and with a maximum draft (at low summer levels) of 3.02 meters. In this partnership of rivers, the Avon is, by far, the lesser of the two. On rare occasions, spring tides, wind direction and Welsh rain can combine to create a ‘perfect storm’. When this happens, the mighty Severn bore will breach the three downstream weirs and enter our section of the river to rush unchallenged a further sixteen miles up to Worcester where it will finally fade at the base of Diglis Lock. The tidal predictions indicate that if you join us on this meet you will not have the chance to get ‘bored’.
Being at the confluence of these two rivers and their huge catchments, it is not difficult to understand why Tewkesbury suffered so badly in the floods of 2007. The most memorable aerial shots of that time showed the town and surrounding area under water, but the abbey safe and dry on the high ground where it has stood for nine hundred years. Maybe there is a simple lesson here for today’s town planners. In Shakespeare’s Henry V, Falstaff declares: “……..his wit’s as thick as Tewkesbury Mustard…...” Tewkesbury is still known for its mustard and also for its Mop Fair, its links to the War of the Roses and more. It has a thriving theatre and enough shops to empty your wallet. With its fine half-timbered buildings, overhanging upper storeys, elaborate carved doorways and narrow alleyways you will be able to keep your camera clicking away until the battery runs flat. Upriver at Upton you will find a busy little town with a wide selection of shops and activities, from fishing tackle and a famous map shop: to a handmade chocolates factory, from art galleries, old book shops and floral sculpture in ceramics to the skill of the blacksmith. If you love rivers as much as we do, you will – by joining us – get two rivers for the price of one on a boredom-free weekend. Our meet is sure to ‘float your boat’ and also ‘cut the mustard’. Does this all add up to a chance you just can’t afford to miss? The West Country Group invite you to join them and look forward to catching up with paddlers old and new.

SBS (SOUTHERN BOAT SERIES) MISSION OPERATION WILD WATER RACE (WWR)
FAIRTHORNE MANOR 12 FEBRUARY 2017
WORDS & PHOTOS BY SUSAN TEMPLETON
FLASH SIGNAL: SITUATION REPORT 24 paddlers started the mission and 24 finished although a few of the resistance group on the bank did go down with the cold. Unlike Operation Frankton, more colloquially called the Cockleshell Heroes raid, where of the 10 paddlers who set off from submarine HMS Tuna off the French coast, only two survived to make it back to Great Britain. Two were drowned/ died of hypothermia and the other six killed by the Germans. The raid set out to mine German shipping in the Port of Bordeaux in December 1942 during the Second World War using canoes (the cockleshells). Interestingly Major Herbert “Blondie” Hasler the leader of the cockleshell heroes lived just opposite YMCA Fairthorne Manor for part of his life. He was one of the two survivors. The mission started at the boat shed in YMCA Fairthorne Manor, with SBS paddler’s recceing the one mile course on the way up to mission start at Botley Mill, where they rendezvoused with Agent Starter for mission start at 1200 ZULU. Having done their reconnaissance they then raced back down to Agent Finisher, attempting to avoid traps such 7
as low lying tree branches, roots, debris and shallows. The shallows caught a few of the SBS paddlers on the way down: Sheila Worth in her first race mission narrowly avoided capture after getting stuck midstream just after the start. Some paddlers also had to avoid friendly’s passing them and rogue agents (not part of the race) taking water space around them. In the Men’s ranking WWR class Richard Kent (age 53) blew the field away again with a time of 7 minutes and 2 seconds followed by 48 year old Dr Selwyn Richards with 18 year old Conor Buckman in a slower plastic wavehopper in third. The Ladies was won by 59 year old Susan Templeton in a composite WWR followed by 13 year old Rachel Jones and then in third 58 year old Sheila Worth both in slower slalom boats. In the Open class Tony Smith age 53 in a Sea kayak took first in the men’s and in the Ladies a rapidly improving paddler in her first WW Race Beth Perry age 11 in a K1 came first. The Canadian Canoe class was won by 42 year old Phil Brown, followed by 13 year old Philip Smith A number of the SBS paddlers did dress up in camouflage and face paint as part of the race theme. Young 10 year old Jacob Law from Winchester and District Canoe Club was voted as the most successful and was awarded a DVD of the cockleshell heroes and some other camouflage gear.
After the all paddlers had received their operational medals most SBS paddlers disappeared into the undergrowth, whilst the Hamble Sea Scouts (who sacrificed the most paddlers to the mission) left by motorised boats, loaded over the gunwales with their canoe missiles awaiting a call for their next missions which by the way are: •8 April 2017 1230 Start Woodmill Sprint •29 April 2017 Wimborne Sprint (Poole Harbour CC) Run by Itchen Valley and The Sharks Canoe Clubs http://www.thesharks.org.uk/ Details on the GB WWR website http://www. wildwater.org.uk . Many thanks to YMCA Fairthorne Manor for allowing such great racing to be held from their lovely grounds. 8
AUTUMN 2016
Hereford National Families Meet 2017
2017 will be the 26th time this event has run, some of us have been attending every year from the early days and our children are now adults and some are now returning with their children. The meet is very child friendly, but it is not compulsory to bring children, though ‘the child within’ certainly helps! The meet is suitable for all ages and levels of experience. In 2016 we had a total beginner aged 80, who by the end of the week had paddled canoes, kayaks, Stand up Paddleboards and subsequently bought his own canoe. Youngest in the past has been 4 months, albeit attending with canoeing parent and grandparents. For beginners, or more experienced paddlers trying paddling with young children the meet is ideal, providing opportunities to develop new skills under the watchful eye of highly experiences members. Helping newcomers develop the skills to safely enjoy the sport is central to the event. Unlike activity centres, all coaching and leadership is provided free by suitably experienced members attending the meet. The result is a very low cost holiday, though due to being reliant upon voluntary leaders, we cannot guarantee particular activities will happen, but it is rare anyone leaves disappointed. 9
Again for 2017 we have use of the Sea Cadets facilities which provide good facilities for families and young persons including Disabled/Parent & Child shower room. In addition, the improvements to the female facilities at the rowing club were completed early 2016. As with 2016, we have to finish on Friday due to the dates of the Hereford Regatta. Having observed the setting up of the Regatta, this year we can stay until the evening on Friday, thus enabling us to paddle Friday. In addition, the initial safety training, mass paddle and first BBQ will be brought forward to Saturday, re-gaining a paddling day and the change should make the event much more attractive to those only able to attend for public holiday weekend. The more frequent BBQ’s at the fire pit were well received last year and will be repeated. We look forward to seeing you at Hereford, all welcome, first timers, regulars, all ages. Dogs and other pets are welcome, but must be kept under control, to avoid scaring children or conflict with other dogs. For non-paddling members of families there is plenty do within Hereford and nearby, such as the world famous book fair at Hay on Wye. Any questions/queries, my contacts are in the front cover of the magazine. Tim Wheeler 10

Canoe England have been asked if anyone wants to give a home to this canvas on lathe double kayak. (not folding). A bit historic. We don’t need any more in Chertsey shed! Let me know if interested and I will give contact. Robin. “I have a two man touring canoe (Mallard) wood and canvas that was built by my farther over the winter of 1959/60 from a kit. It was well used over the years but has been stored in the roof of my garage for many years. I am shortly moving house and have got to dispose of it. On inspection it appears in reasonable seaworthy condition, although in need of a bit of cleaning and re varnishing etc. ( would make an ideal project for anyone interested). I don’t want anything for it, but wondered if your group or anyone associated with it would be interested in it, otherwise it will be a very sad journey to the dump! I live in Welling, Kent. It would make me extremely happy if anyone could use it.”
FOR SALE 16ft Apaché Open Canoe Wood gunwales and seats (gunwales need some attention!) Comes with kneeling twart White fibreglass body This was my first open canoe given to me as a 16th birthday present. It breaks my heart to sell it, as we have been on many a journey together, but without the time to paddle it’s wasting away on a rack. It does have a few scrapes along the bottom as has been down many a rapid, but solid. £375.00 o.n.o Contact Josie Faulkner / Fran Faulkner (details in front of magazine) 17
