Canongate from July to December 2017
Canongate is an independent publisher: since 1973 we’ve worked to unearth and amplify the most vital, innovative voices we can find, wherever they come from, and we’ve published all kinds of books – thoughtful, upsetting, gripping, beatific, vulgar, chaste, unrepentant, life-changing . . . Along the way there have been landmarks of fiction – including Alasdair Gray’s masterpiece Lanark, and Yann Martel’s Life of Pi – the best-ever-selling Booker winner – and non-fiction too. We’ve published an American president and a Guantanamo detainee; we’ve campaigned for causes we believe in and fought court cases to get our authors heard. And twice we’ve won Publisher of the Year. We’re still independent, and we’re as committed to unorthodox and innovative publishing as ever.
THE GRAYBAR HOTEL Curtis Dawkins ‘The voice of a man who understands, deeply and instinctively, that, at root, the narrative art is a yearning for contact and, in these stories, what a hilarious, moving, heartbreaking, absurd, and ultimately affirmative endeavour that is proven to be. Stunning’ Niall Griffiths The Graybar Hotel offers a glimpse into the reality of prison life through the eyes of the people who spend their days and years behind bars. A man sits collect-calling strangers every day just to hear the sounds of the outside world; an inmate recalls his descent into addiction as his prison softball team gears up for an annual tournament; a prisoner is released and finds freedom more complex and baffling than he expected.

HOW TO STOP TIME Matt Haig ‘The first rule is that you don’t fall in love. There are other rules too, but that is the main one. No falling in love. No staying in love. No daydreaming of love. Because otherwise, of course, you slowly lose your mind . . .’ Tom Hazard has a dangerous secret. He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old, but he was born in 1581. Owing to a rare condition, he’s been alive for centuries. From Shakespeare’s England to jazz age Paris and voyaging the Pacific, Tom has seen a lot, and now craves an ordinary life. Always changing his identity to stay alive, Tom now has the perfect cover – working as a history teacher at a London school. Here, he can teach the kids about wars and witch hunts as if he’d never witnessed them first-hand. He can try and tame the past that is fast catching up with him. The only thing Tom mustn’t do is fall in love. How to Stop Time is a wild, bittersweet, timetravelling, story about losing and finding yourself; about the certainty of change, and the mistakes humans are doomed to repeat. And about the lifetimes it can take to learn how to live.

TIMEKEEPERS
How the World Became Obsessed with Time
Simon Garfield Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana. The Beatles learn to be brilliant in an hour and a half. An Englishman arrives back from Calcutta but refuses to adjust his watch. Beethoven has his symphonic wishes ignored. A US Senator begins a speech that will last for 25 hours. The horrors of war are frozen at the click of a camera. A woman designs a ten-hour clock and reinvents the calendar. Roger Bannister lives out the same four minutes over a lifetime. And a prince attempts to stop time in its tracks. Timekeepers is a book about our obsession with time and our desire to measure it, control it, sell it, film it, perform it, immortalise it and make it meaningful. It has two simple intentions: to tell some illuminating stories, and to ask whether we have all gone completely nuts.

IF I COULD TELL YOU JUST ONE THING . . . Encounters with Remarkable People and Their Most Valuable Advice
Richard Reed Good advice can change your life. It can open your eyes, change your perspective, and alter your path. Shared wisdom joins generations, cultures and societies. From advice on business to relationships, creativity, spirituality and survival, in these pages you will find words of wisdom for when you need them the most. Richard Reed built Innocent Drinks from a smoothie stall on a street corner to one of the biggest brands in Britain. He credits his success to four brilliant pieces of advice, each given to him just when he needed them most. Ever since, it has been Richard’s habit, whenever he meets somebody he admires, to ask them for their best piece of advice. If they could tell him just one thing, what would it be?
Richard Reed studied geography at St. John’s College, Cambridge before starting a career in advertising. A few years later he and two friends left their jobs to found Innocent Drinks. Starting from a market stall, today Innocent produces more than a million smoothies a day and sells them in 17 countries across Europe. Reed is the founder of Art Everywhere and co-founder of the Innocent Foundation and JamJar Investments. He also presented the BBC Three series Be Your Own Boss. This is his first book.

THE HIDDEN WAYS Alistair Moffat In The Hidden Ways, Alistair Moffat traverses the lost paths of Scotland – its Roman roads tramped by armies, its warpaths and pilgrim routes, drove roads and rail roads, turnpikes, flyways and sea‑roads – in a bid to understand how our history has left its mark upon our landscape. Alistair’s travels along the hidden ways reveal not only the searing beauty and magic of the Scottish landscape, but open up a new means of understanding our past: in retracing the forgotten paths, he charts a powerful, surprising and moving history of Scotland through the unremembered lives who have moved through it.

THE STORY OF LOOKING Mark Cousins Looking can be an act of empathy or aggression. It can provoke desire or express it. And from the blurry, edgeless world we inhabit as infants to the landscape of screens we grow into, looking can define us. In The Story of Looking, filmmaker and writer Mark Cousins takes us on a lightning-bright tour – in words and images – through how our looking selves develop over the course of a lifetime, and the ways that looking has changed through the centuries. From great works of art to tourist photographs, from cityscapes to cinema, through science and protest, propaganda and refusals to look, the false mirrors and great visionaries of looking, this book illuminates how we construct as well as receive the things we see. Brilliant and eclectic, The Story of Looking is a photo album and an art gallery, a road movie and a visual grammar: once you’ve read it you’ll never see things the same way again.

THE RUNAWAY SPECIES How Human Creativity Remakes the World
David Eagleman and Anthony Brandt What is creativity? How does it work? Why do we have it? And where is it taking us? In a time when the old ways of living are being torn up and remodelled, human civilisation is facing challenges that require all our ingenuity to address. In The Runaway Species, neuroscientist David Eagleman and composer Anthony Brandt unravel the threads of the arts, neuroscience, evolution and technology which make up the tapestry of human creativity, leading us on a tour through the history of innovation from the moon landings to Picasso’s ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’. In doing so, Brandt and Eagleman offer a powerful examination of creativity, the strategies which stimulate it, and how it can be a driving force to propel us into the future. Through understanding our ability to innovate – our most profound, mysterious and deeply human capacity – we can rise to meet the challenge of remaking our constantly shifting world.

LITTLE ME
The A–Z of Matt Lucas
Matt Lucas ‘One of the biggest and most talented comedy stars the UK has ever produced’ Peter Capaldi Hello there. Sorry to bother you but I thought I’d let you know that I’ve written an autobiography. (Yes me, I done it, not a ghostwriter because I’m still scared of ghosts.)
The hilarious, moving, heart-warming memoir from one of Britain’s bestloved comedians and actors
The thing is, my book is a bit different to most memoirs you may have read, because it comes in the form of an A–Z.
HARDBACK 3 October 2017
For instance, B is for Baldy! - which is what people used to shout at me in the playground (not much fun), G is for Gay (because I is a actual real life gay) and T is for the TARDIS (because I’m a companion in Doctor Who now, innit). You get the sort of thing.

Throughout the book I talk about my life and also my work, including Little Britain, Come Fly With Me, Bridesmaids, Les Misérables, Alice in Wonderland and, of course, Shooting Stars. It hasn’t all been laughs, and I won’t shy away from being honest about the hard times – but I’ll save that for the book. Anyway I hope you buy it at least twice. Thank you.
Matt Lucas is an award-winning comedian, actor and writer. He started his comedy career in the early nineties, working with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer on The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer and Shooting Stars, where he played giant baby George Dawes, but discovered major success with co-star David Walliams in Come Fly With Me and Little Britain, for which they won three BAFTAs and two International Emmy Awards. Matt received much praise for his roles on stage in Les Misérables and has since gone on to feature in many successful films and TV shows, including Alice in Wonderland, Bridesmaids, Paddington and now Doctor Who. @realmattlucas
