Watergate: Rethinking NDSM’s Lasloods as Porthouse
Semester/Year: Master Dissertation Project Proffessor: Marc Dujardin Period: September 2019 - June 2020 Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands Research Project: Individual

How can the past be rehabilitated in order to preserve heritage significance and simultaneously evoke the continuity to share new stories? How can vacancies be a mediator to find these specific qualities of existing structures that play an active role in its transformative history? The master dissertation project is about rethinking a new spatial strategy to make Laslood’s story visible, rather than preventing a seemingly hopeless and vacancy structure from disappearing in the course of history. The project narrates with the palimpsest transformations from past to the present and till future in the NDSM site which is located in the banks of the river IJ to the north of Amsterdam. The design aims to keep the monumental signifance with its cultural identity and reclaim the proximity in the backside of canal which teased to make new relationships with water, Lasloods and development area to connect subcultures and new users.
Bringing the water into building creates new possibility of a gate. It becomes a place of welcome and farewell as built-in porthouse. It turned the Lasloods from standing alone building to common place by bringing the water in and extruding the building out. Also, Lasloods turned into a safe haven with alterable spaces to keep pace with seasonal conditions. The former welding warehouse turned into a watergate both for new comers and subcultures to become a multimodal place for spatio-cultural crossovers by reconnecting with the history of Lasloods to the glorious Dutch culture of water. As a result, a new layer is added to penetrate into palimpsest notion. 7

TRACES OVER TIME
We learn from our past and share certain collective knowledge and historical events that connected to places with broader history and tradition. Within the framework of areal readings, the palimpsest notion was followed owing to NDSM-wharf’s multi-layered character. It has traces over time where old and new become juxtaposed, permanent and impermanent can be read in the former layout of the previous buildings. How can one create a layer of memory to which the buildings are superimposed and make us aware of an encounter with the past?

Semester/Year: Master Design Studio II Proffessor: Roeland Dudal Period: February - June 2017 Location: Brussels, Belgium Research Project: Individual
keywords: near future, green area, agriculture food production The purpose of the study was to investigate the near future of the North District of Brussels, and what choices taken today can change the future of an area as complex as it is fragile. The production of a collective Atlas allowed us to understand what are the different degrees of complexity that characterize the district, and how. In the study of neighborhood is essential to investigate the future aspects. Afterwards, starting from the considerations derived from the Atlas, a personal proposal was made in order to answer a precise research question about the future of the area, starting from the present situation and taking into account all the changes to which it will be subjected. The dialogue pursued between the present and future condition of the district, through the proposals presented, thus makes it possible to transform the current district into a more inclusive area in which the different actors currently living the district can cohabit in the buildings and especially the public spaces of the neighbourhood.
How can be the value of the unqualified green areas increased to claim the future of Northern District? How food can re-shape the linear economy into a circular economy while bringing people together? Instead of waiting for disasters to react, we should push on problems and potentials and use them as a motivation for forward actions. we need a change in food production, where sustainable practices and local people come together to create a food system for consumers, producers and the environment. 17

Eskisehir as a water city is constantly developing and expanding in its surroundings, also changing in environment and human relations. It is devided into characteristic neighbourhoods according to different typologies. In the center Porsuk Canal has a great water figure as its accessibility, on the southern side Odunpazari contacts cultural interactions as transitive zone, in east part other residential districts have detried pattern, as a result it acts as an in-between city of intense structure in the city center which reveals the need for urban gaps. Sakariilica is located in the northern part of Eskisehir and acts as a valley tightened in other valley, in between mountains. Landscape is the topography and the environment is field. To feel how valuable the body is and to find the source of natural life a balneotheraphy center for good aging is suggested as a thermal hub.
The integration of 3 elements are significant for the project; firstly the human for mind, body and soul, secondly the water for sense of wonder, plain and feeling with five senses, and lastly the nature for timeless experience, connection and reclusion. Health and fun are the keywords for here, the former for thermal water, healthy nutrition and meditation, and the latter for outdoor sports, recrational activities like trekking and climbing. To interact with Sakariilica site; tree nursery stops, agricultural fields, riparian in the forest are integrated into the land. Same day and permanent visitors, other facility members can benefit from the thermal hub. Their actions will be being purified, physical exercise, relaxing and sensing the place. 25

CONVERSION IN URBAN CONTEXT
Theatre Venue - Conversion in Urban Context
Semester/Year: Master Semester II Proffessor: Jaspaert Dirk, Bruno Depre, Monika Rychtarikova Period: February- June 2019 Location: Schaerbeek, Brussels, Belgium Research Project: with Marta Gruca, Luciana Candido
This project is a conversion project, in the context of KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture Campus’ Sint-Lucas Brussels building. The main purpose is transforming the current building which is currently composed of ateliers, clasrooms and auditorium into a theatre venue. The programme of the building is; theatre venue for 200 people, auditorium for 100 people, ateliers, library, offices and meeting rooms. The context of the course requires to keep the existing facades in their original form and be respected to the existing structure. In addition, the project contains the details in 1:10 scale while calculating static, cooling, heating and ventilation datum.
Two adjacent buildings of school are added into the new design and their facades were conserved. New brick wall system with two door openings is proposed. The big theatre venue is placed into the middle as a core element and the other functions are faced through the street. Hence, the aim was to consider the already existing conditions , while being functional for the users and visitors.

On the ground floor entrance; an open main hall welcomes you with a circular stairs. The box office and cloakroom serves for visitors. We kept the idea of the existing ramp for transfering light through each level and underneath is used as storage. The layout of the existing small auditorium is turned into modifiable venue.
Owing to elevation difference of the street level, 3 different entrances serve at cross purposes. First one is for fire escape from big theatre venue, second one acts as lift to carry materials for performenrs, and the last one is connecting the whole neighbourhood to the inside yard.

Semester/Year: Master Semester I Proffessor: Bruno Depre, Jaspaert Dirk, Johan Cordonnier Jeroen Da Conceica Period: September - January 2018 Location: Brussels, Belgium Research Project: with Silke de Greef, Viktorija Trajceska
The original aim of the design was a building for the community in the administrative sense. We changed the design into a more vivant building within the city where education can take place, events can be organized, workshops can be given, little commerce can grow and there is a small experimental space on the roof in terms of modern urban farming. The context of the course requires to deal with at least one long span building. In addition, the project contains personal details in 1:5 scale while calculating static, cooling, heating, ventilation and fire escape datum. All the calculations, design phase ideas, architectural, fire escape and ventilation plans were done with the team.
Structural schema and monemental effect of the auditorium is; base shear wall is not only carrying cantilever structure, but also creating a core under of it which generates entrance to the auditorium Open-air parking lot provides more daylight to the inside which make the space suitable for the future usage also it has advantage for fire safety and natural ventilation. Biotecture living walls: are green infrastructures where structure integrates with the natural buildings for thermal benefits, increased biodiversity, health and wellbeing.

Cities have been transforming with sociocultural, economical, political and technological processes specific to different eras since the time they were built. While the process of rapid development of the city attract people, in Turkey, imbalance between economical and social distribution cause significant problems such as disintegration because of urban regeneration projects which have high profit and social dimension. Atasehir has been chosen as a large scale mass housing project settling in Istanbul. The purpose of this is to examine the frequently mentioned concept of “urban transformation, how it shapes within the urban dynamics and in relation to the environment. Changing of nearby property prices have been followed the rent effect of Atasehir from 1994 till now. The aim of the project is to search new concepts for the dwelling and housing in Atasehir.
In this context, the purpose is to bring a new perspective to social housing which are designed for different typologies in the future, and direct them with new architectural solutions and approaches . Within this framework, the terms of symbiosis cohabitation is mixed with liveable platforms to uplift the street life through different levels and bringing more production area underneath. Also, the common places such as, ateliers, outdoor classrooms, market places, playgrounds and cultural facilities were kept in the ground level for social interactions. 43
