SEA OF CORTEZ THE
AQUARIUM WORLD OF THE
SEA OF CORTEZ Baja California Sur, México
Place of thousands of Islands, pinnacles and rocks, the Sea of Cortez is one of the ultimate diving destinations in the world. Named the Aquarium of the world by Jacques Cousteau, you'll find playful Sea Lions, schools of fish, invertebrates, whale sharks, mantas and rays of all sizes. Baja’s Sea of Cortez is somewhere close to five million years old (estimates vary greatly), making it the youngest of all the seas in the world. The Baja peninsula was formed during an era of frequent volcanic activity and earthquakes of unbelievable magnitude. Biologically speaking, the Sea of Cortez is the richest body of water on our entire planet. This diverse sea supports more than 900 varieties of fish and more than 2,000 species of marine invertebrates. It is home to many species that exist only within its waters.

DIVING THE SEA OF CORTEZ How is diving the Sea of Cortez?
The Sea of Cortez is named “The Aquarium of the World” by none other but Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the most famous explorer of the oceans around the world, and co-inventor of the Aqua-Lung. It´s located on the coast of the Baja California peninsula, in the marine ecosystems that the Islands of the Gulf of California can offer. Some of the diving spots are within limits of National Parks that preserve the well-being of all species that inhabit these blue waters. Some points of interest are: San Francisquito near San José Island, the Espíritu Santo Archipelago, Cabo Pulmo / Los Frailes, Gordo Banks in Los Cabos, however you should contact our Liveaboard director on what attractions are open because of the seasonality and availability by the Park´s authorities. Cantamar Liveaboard Safaris at the Sea of Cortez feature three 60-minute dives a day, or four 50- minute or less dives a day, depending on weather, dive planning, and dive sites. Surface water temperatures on August rise to 82F (28C) and go as low as 78F (26C) in November.
What is the best season for Sea of Cortez safari liveaboard?
There´s year-round diving in the Sea of Cortez, limited by the sea lion breeding season (July-August), and the presence of mantas, whales, and sharks in some well-known spots.
