MA C Y/ E OJ’ S U NREE P2 O 0R 1 5T and café. Since construction started, more than 40 truck movements carrying more than 1,600 tonnes of soil and rocks have been excavated. This excavated area will house new production kitchens, complete with a new preparation and plating area, and multiple store and cool rooms. This work was necessary to provide extra capacity to service the function rooms and preparation for restaurants and cafés at this end of the Club. You will shortly see work commencing indoors with the café and surrounding lounge and seating areas taking shape over the rest of the year. At the same time work will be commencing on the new 450 space underground car park at the front of the Club. Rest assured that during construction we will be doing everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum and I encourage everyone to come along and check out the progress. A number of TVs have been installed throughout the Club to showcase the redevelopment.
Dear Members, Welcome to the first edition of Canterbury’s new bi-monthly edition of the Journal. With so much happening at your favourite club, we simply couldn’t pack it into just four editions a year anymore, so from this issue onwards you will now receive the Journal six times each year. If you prefer to get your information electronically, you can also download the Canterbury Leagues Club Journal App for Apple devices from the Apple store and receive the Journal directly to your Apple Newsstand as soon as it comes out. It’s been a busy past few months at Canterbury since my last report – we’ve had a lot of construction activity around Flame Pizza + Grill as contractors worked on excavating and preparing the foundation for the new casual restaurant
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs recently launched their new store on Burwood Road. Combining a café with a merchandise store and aptly called The Bulldog Belmore, it is a fantastic hub for Bulldogs fans to meet over a cup of coffee and purchase merchandise available exclusively in-store. On behalf of everyone at Canterbury I wish all the mums out there a very happy Mother’s Day. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

CAFÉ CULTURE COMING TO CANTERBURY THE OUTDOOR SEATING AREA OF CANTERBURY’S NEW CAFÉ
ARTIST IMPRESSION OF THE NEW CAFÉ
The area at the front of Canterbury has been a hub of activity over the past few months as renovations continue on the new café. The new café is being built in between Reception and Flame Pizza + Grill at the northern wing of the Club. It will seat approximately 200 people in a mixture of internal and outdoor tables, chairs and lounges. The concept behind the new café stems from the philosophy of ‘paddock to plate’ and chefs will be concentrating on
04
preparing and serving food that is locally sourced. Another talking point of the café will be the specialty coffee; the café will have several different types of premium roasted coffee beans available. The beans will be freshly ground each day to produce some of the finest coffees with a rich flavour and strong aroma. “The café culture has long been a tradition with Canterbury Members – more and more people want to enjoy perfect barista-made cup of rich coffee
while reading their morning paper or with a meal while working on their laptop and tablet in a scenic and relaxing environment,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every Journal.. REACHING OUT TO YOUTHS ON THE STREET FATHER CHRIS RILEY WITH SOME OF HIS YOUNG CHARGES
Youth Off The Street’s CanterburyBankstown Outreach Program, which engages young people in the community, received a $10,000 boost from Canterbury League Club recently. The Outreach Program uses sports and recreational activities, music and dance, skills workshops and school holiday camps to engage and empower young people to make positive life changes and
become independent young adults. Recipients also learn to develop leadership skills, build confidence and self-esteem, make new friends and grow social networks. From there, they build relationships with youth workers who are on hand to offer relevant information, advice and referrals for education and training, employment, health and other youthrelated issues. “This program encourages ownership and fosters youth-led initiatives through facilitation of youth advisory groups. Other key elements of outreach involve youth consultations, service learning, peer mentoring and traineeships,” said Jill Summers, Account Manager for Youth Off The Streets.
CENTRE PROVIDING ACCESS TO ENGLISH CLASSES
The push for a community program like this came in 2011 when a young person lost his life at Bankstown train station. The program has been running in the Canterbury-Bankstown area ever since then, providing over 13,396 instances of support for young people to find healthier alternatives to alcohol, drugs and crime. “We live in a society nowadays where parents are working longer hours to support their families so it becomes harder for some young people to interact with positive role models. I encourage more youth to take advantage of services such as the one offered by Youth Off The Streets because a community program like this is a valuable source of information and full of positive experiences,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.
WOMEN LEARNING ENGLISH AT LANGUAGE CLASSES RUN BY MISSION AUSTRALIA
For migrant and non-English speaking women with children, qualified child minding services have proven to be a big drawcard to Canterbury City Community Centre’s ‘English Classes for Women’. Supported by a $4,700 donation from Canterbury League Club, the weekly English classes cater for Beginner to Advanced speakers and often have two teachers in each session. The classes are run in partnership with Mission Australia and benefit women with young children who are often socially isolated and have limited access to other classes. “Child minding creates access for many of the women to be able to attend – particularly if they don’t have family and friends who can help. The children also benefit as they can play and socialise in our indoor and outdoor play areas,”
said Liz Messih, CEO of Canterbury City Community Centre (4C). Aside from child minding services, 4C also prints and distributes a directory with a list of available English classes run by different providers in the local Canterbury district. The directory is circulated in the community through local libraries, community centres and council offices, and is also available online through their website. “We first put the Directory together in 2004 as we had many enquiries from residents about where they could go to
learn English and were given lots of bits of paper. It was quite confusing as the many different classes had different eligibility requirements and different fees and different locations,” said Messih. “English classes will not only help people from non-English speaking backgrounds integrate more smoothly into the Australian community, but it will also increase opportunities to make new friends and to participate in other activities such as study and employment,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

CANTERBURY PRODUCES DAWN SERVICE PROGRAM Aside from the Order of Service, the booklet also lists the history behind the Gallipoli Landing as well as the founding of the original Sydney Dawn Service back in 1927. The Anzac Day Dawn Service Trust was formed in 2000 when the ageing representatives of the Australian Legion of Ex-Service Clubs received assistance from the National Servicemen’s Association NSW Branch to ensure the continuation of the Dawn Service tradition. The Trust is based at The Lakemba Club, which is one of the four founding clubs after the Great War.
On behalf of the Anzac Dawn Service Trust Inc and to honour the 100th year of the Gallipoli Landing, Canterbury produced 20,000 copies of the commemorative
Anzac Day Dawn Service ‘Order of Service’ booklets that were handed out at this year’s service at Martin Place.
“It was a huge honour for Canterbury and The Lakemba Club to play a role in this year’s service – it is important that we show our respect by continuing to remember the men and women who sacrificed much while in service of this country,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.
LAKEMBA SEA-DOO JET SKI WINNER
MEMBER JOHN COZANITIS, THE LUCKY WINNER OF THE BRAND NEW SEA-DOO SPARK, WITH LAKEMBA SUPERVISOR ZAN KUKUCKA & BULLDOGS PLAYERS JOSH JACKSON, JOSH MORRIS & JOSH REYNOLDS
Congratulations to John Cozanitis, who won himself a brand new Sea-Doo Spark jetski package in the competition that recently ran at The Lakemba Club. The prize, valued at $9,936, included the jetski with 12 months registration, accessories and a Boeing trailer.
24
The Club was packed on the night of the draw with hundreds of people turning up to see if their name was the lucky one to be pulled out of the barrel. Bulldogs players Josh Morris, Josh Jackson and Josh Reynolds were also there on the night to conduct the draw and congratulate the winner.
John said he was very surprised to have won; when asked what he will be doing with the prize he said he will be taking his dad and family on jetski rides on the weekends. Congratulations John, we hope you enjoy your prize.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS: BATEAU BAY WOMEN’S BOWLING CLUB From these humble beginnings the Club has grown to be a major force in women’s bowling in the Central Coast district and one of the largest clubs affiliated with Women’s Bowls NSW. The Ladies have won Pennant Flags in all Grades from 1 to 5, a total of 27 overall. As well as competing in 3 State Pennant Playoffs during the last 4 years.
HOW THE BAY SPORTS CLUB USED TO LOOK IN THE SIXTIES
The formation of the Bateau Bay Women’s Bowling Club was first discussed by 18 female members of the Bateau Bay Bowling and Recreation Club to see if they wanted to become affiliated bowlers. The Club was formed and the inaugural meeting was held at Progress Hall, Bateau Bay on 21 May 1965, attended by these 18 members

and chaired by the Central Coast District President. Application was then made to the New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association for affiliation and the necessary papers presented. The Committee was then duly elected with Mrs. Beatrice Dowling elected foundation President. The first day played in full dress was 1 July 1965.
The Ladies have also won a total of 21 District Championships overall playing in the District Singles, Pairs, Triples, Fours and Senior Fours. Bateau Bay Women’s Bowling Club will be holding their official 50th Birthday celebrations with their Members and distinguished guests from the State and District on 18 June 2015.
