CEO’S REPORT a focus on fresh rustic selections with a modern twist. As always we will keep you updated in the Journal and online and will continue to provide sneak peaks as we get closer to an opening date. Plans are also underway on revamping the Banyan Brasserie, which will commence in 2017. This refurbishment of the existing restaurant will see a facelift to the interior along with the construction of a brand new Al Fresco seating area at the front of the Club. The overall capacity of the restaurant will almost double. Along with the changes to the fitout of the restaurant, the kitchen will also be refurbished allowing for more exciting menu options, which will include all your traditional favourites along with the very latest offerings currently available in similar restaurants. In the meantime, the Banyan Chef team continue to work hard at improving the existing menu and we have been receiving terrific feedback since it was introduced earlier this year. So come in and check out some of the fantastic new dishes available. Dear Members, On behalf of everyone at Canterbury I wish all the mums a Happy Mother’s Day. It has been a very busy last couple of months around the Club, with an unseasonal stretch of dry weather seeing some exceptional progress on the large construction site at the front of the Club. Some parts of the dig are now well past the halfway mark and it is easy to see just how large the new car park will be. You can continue to see regular updates of the development on our website and social media pages, including some aerial videos taken flying over the site which are quite spectacular.
Our Entertainment Team have also been hard at work securing some exciting acts for Canterbury Members. Over the next few months we will have artists including the chart topping Shannon Noll and 80’s favourites, The Eurogliders, performing at the Club. So if you haven’t seen a show at Canterbury before, now would be the perfect opportunity to enjoy a fantastic night out with friends and family. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Dave Brace Chief Executive Officer
Construction on Bakehouse Café has now moved internally, with Parkview handing the reins over to MPA, who will complete the internal fitout. Over the next few months while MPA complete the fitout, we will be recruiting for key staff to run the Café and finalising the new menu. Bakehouse Café will serve a premium coffee selection accompanied by a range of tasty treats and wholesome meals, with

AERIAL SHOT OF THE UNDERGROUND CAR PARK EXCAVATION AS TONNES OF SOIL ARE MOVED OFF-SITE
BAKEHOUSE CAFÉ NEARING COMPLETION Canterbury will soon be unveiling one of the most exciting projects this year – the Bakehouse Café is only another few months away from being completed and Canterbury can’t wait to introduce it to our Members and guests. MPA, the company who won the tender to complete the internal fitout, is in the final stages of installing the interior décor and equipment for the café. The décor inspiration will see the area decked out in warm, earthy, and rustic tones with plenty of natural lighting, in-line with the café’s paddock-to-plate philosophy. Please flip to Page 8-9 for a look at the style of dishes that are coming your way. On the opposite side of the café, MPA are preparing what will become the café lounge area which will provide more seats for patrons to relax and unwind with a cup of coffee from Bakehouse Cafe. That area will have free WiFi so customers can bring their laptops and tablets and work from the lounge area.

Parkview are still in the process of excavating the underground car park at the front of the Club; they have passed the halfway dig depth. Twelve massive trucks have been taking turns ferrying away the soil and rocks that have been dug out – by the end of it, over 62,000m³ tonnes will be moved off-site. As they’ve dug downwards, workers have been reinforcing the sides of the walls with shoring piles at the edge of the boundary. Once the area has been completely excavated, Parkview can start building each car park level to form the brand new five-level underground car park. Members and guests can look forward to even more available parking at Canterbury in addition to the existing multi-level car park at the rear of the Club. To the side of the Club, workers have finished pouring the mezzanine slab and are working on forming the Level 1 concrete slab that forms the upper floor. Once that has finished, it will be home to a new plant room and also provide the
space to upgrade the kitchens and bars that will service patrons on Level 1. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following the Canterbury website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every Journal. COMMUNITY even more unpleasant. However, the major difficulty for the homeless is getting the blankets washed as they are not able to wash them in a regular domestic washing machine,” said Sr Fidelis. “I was searching online to see if there was an easier solution; perhaps small warm blankets that could fit in a regular washing machine. It was then that I came across the Backpack Beds. These seemed like a brilliant answer and so I set about raising money for the backpack beds.” DEPUTY CHAIRMAN ARTHUR COOREY AND SISTER FIDELIS WITH ONE OF THE BACKPACK BEDS
BACKPACK BEDS NO WET BLANKETS FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE A $2,000 Canterbury League Club donation has helped St Patrick’s Church Hill purchase 30 backpack beds to be given out to homeless people sleeping rough on the streets. The backpack beds, designed by charity group Swags for Homeless, is an allweather shelter and foldable bed made from waterproof and fire retardant

material. When it isn’t being used, it rolls back into its backpack for easy portability with built-in storage pockets and a lockable internal pocket. Sister Fidelis McTeigue of St Patrick’s Church Hill first got the idea to distribute these beds after speaking to the people who attend the church’s breakfast program for the homeless. “When blankets get wet, which is a regular occurrence for the homeless, the blankets get very smelly. The blankets also pick up all the dirt and dust which makes them
According to Sr Fidelis, most recipients of the backpack beds have said they are getting much better sleep and feel safer and warmer. “People who face homelessness sometimes find it difficult to enter emergency accommodation, so it is vital that they have access to this type of humane crisis bedding which keeps them warm and protected especially heading into the winter months. Canterbury is proud to help Sr Fidelis purchase these backpack beds,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

on the numbers of sessions clients can attend,” said Daniel Symonds, Manager at Betsafe.
The BetSafe program was created in 1998 by gambling counsellor and author Paul Symond in consultation with Canterbury and a number of other leading New South Wales registered clubs. BetSafe is a comprehensive responsible gambling program that offers a complete range of services to minimise problem gambling and assist those who are affected by problem gambling.
“A first-time caller may be reassured that they can receive immediate support and that the information they provide will be confidential. In many cases, callers are seeking information or referral to counselling or self-exclusion or seeking information about problem gambling or alcohol related issues.”
Canterbury Members who struggle with problem gambling have access to BetSafe’s 24-hour telephone and face-to-face counselling with trained professionals and the choice of selfexclusion from the Club. “BetSafe’s counselling service is one of the most comprehensive problem gambling counselling services in Australia, meaning appointments are available inside and outside of business hours and we do not have any limits
Canterbury takes its responsibilities very seriously and all supervisors and senior managers are trained to provide immediate assistance to anyone in the Club who asks for help for a gambling problem. “Supervisors and managers are not expected to be counsellors but rather to be caring and supportive of the Club’s Members and guests. A person who asks for help can be sure of being heard by an empathetic listener who will be discreet and helpful,” said Daniel.
