CEO’S REPORT We look forward to seeing you at the Club to enjoy the range of light meals, delicious cakes and desserts and, to quote one of our regular customers, ‘the best coffee in the area’. With the indoor area of Bakehouse now fully open, we are looking forward to the completion of the Café’s al fresco area shortly including the completion of the front façade of the Club above the Cafe. With Bakehouse open 24 hours a day you have no excuse not to come in and check it out for yourself. In October we opened a new Greek restaurant at The Lakemba Club called The Islands. This fabulous new restaurant is run by a local Greek family and the mouth-watering menu includes a large range of authentic Greek cuisine. Check out the details for the new restaurant on page 30. The Lakemba Club is located just 1km from Canterbury so it’s very convenient to drop in and have a look when you next visit.

Dear Members, After teasing you for many months with pictures of the tasty new treats being developed for the Bakehouse, I am pleased to advise that the hoardings have come down and the Café is now open for business. The initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The Bakehouse offers a totally new dining experience at Canterbury with an eclectic mix of flexible seating options and an open plan design that combines the up-to-date features of a modern inner city café with the traditional charm of a local bakehouse. The contemporary styled bistro space echoes the French Nouveau era, with elegant wrought iron screens, timber parquetry floors, sleek marble columns and brass detailing.

On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of Canterbury I would like to wish all of our Members a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year. Christmas at Canterbury is always a special time and this year you can enjoy all of the fabulous decorations inside the Club along with nightly carols and visits from Santa in the lead up to the big day. Why not have a family get together or your work Christmas party at Canterbury. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

available at the café’s glass-contained cake servery section. To view the full menu, pop into the Bakehouse Café for yourself or visit canterbury.com.au Coffee aficionados will be impressed with the range available at the Bakehouse Café, all prepared by our new Bakehouse Barista, Toli. He has been honing his skills making perfect cups of coffee for cafes in Wellington NZ, Brisbane and now in Sydney. According to Toli, the secret to making the perfect cuppa is to engage yourself in every coffee you make and be conscious of all the small details which end up making a huge difference. Cap, black, flat white, almond milk piccolo, hazelnut skinny macchiato, extra hot extra shot – Toli and his crew will be keeping customers well-caffeinated on a daily basis!

With café seating for approximately 210 diners when the al fresco area is open, and an extra 135 café lounge seats nearby, the café marks the completion of the first phase of Canterbury’s four year $120 million redevelopment. “We are very proud of this new milestone for the Club – I invite everyone to visit Canterbury to see our newly-opened lounge areas as well as try out our new Bakehouse Café. The fresh new menu has plenty to offer and the café surroundings are very relaxing to enjoy a meal with family and friends,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club. GOING PINK TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR BREAST CANCER For the month of October Canterbury turned PINK to show support for National Breast Cancer Foundation’s (NBCF) Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Plenty of Members, guests and staff took part in the various activities on offer throughout the month and raised money for this wonderful charity which researches the prevention and cure of breast cancer. Showing Canterbury’s support, Banyan Brasserie donated a portion of their sales of pink desserts to NBCF. There were pink cupcakes, pink donuts and pink raspberry mousse on offer to tempt those with a sweet tooth. C-Life members also got into the action by suiting up in their pinkest exercise gear and bringing their smiles and energy to the designated PINK group exercise

classes. It was a riot of pink clothes, pink feathers and pink armbands as everyone sweated it out during the classes. Guess what was lit up in pink for one month and one month only? In a Canterbury first, the external volano water feature was lit up in pink every night in October as our show of support. Thank you to everyone who shared their happy snaps with the Club’s social media pages!

“In this day and age, many lives have been affected by, not just breast cancer, but also many other types of cancer. Canterbury has been a longtime supporter of NBCF and is proud to fundraise for cancer research with the hope that in the future all cancer deaths will be preventable,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

2016 STAFF AWARDS NIGHT In September Canterbury League Club celebrated the achievements and service of 44 staff members at their annual Staff Awards Night. Every year the Club recognises staff members who reach five-year service milestones at Canterbury – awards for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years were presented to recipients from various departments including Food and Beverage, Gaming, Security and Surveillance, C-Life, IT and Reception.

Peek for her dedication to helping out the community through Canterbury’s Staff Community Program. Throughout the year, Meagan has volunteered on numerous occasions to feed the homeless in the city with the Club’s partner program with Maronites on Mission, and has taken part in other staff programs like colouring her hair for The World’s Greatest Shave, Jeans for Genes Day and Jersey Day.

“Canterbury couldn’t be more proud of staff members who received awards – they have shown amazing dedication and loyalty to the Club and upheld the values which makes Canterbury an iconic destination for all our Members and guests,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury.

Aside from honouring service milestones, Canterbury also recognises employees who have exhibited the Club’s core values of Courtesy, Attentive, Responsive and Excellence with their RAVE Champion awards. This year’s winners were Rhys Wolloghan, Hermiz Hermiz, Steve Taber and Vicki Petsalis. A new award category was introduced at this year’s award night – Volunteer of the Year Award – which went to Meagan

LEGENDS TAKE ON DOOLEYS IN SHUFFLEBOARD COMPETITION have only been playing for six months, however that didn’t stop them from giving Dooleys a good run for their money.

DOOLEYS & LAKEMBA LEGENDS TEAM CAPTAINS WITH THE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY

The day started with genial smiles and good humour all around but it couldn’t hide an exciting tension in the air as teams readied themselves for the chance to win the championship cup. Taking place at The Lakemba Club, the inaugural Western Suburbs Shuffleboard Championship had the Lakemba Legends taking on players from Dooleys Shuffleboard Club in nail-biting heats which culminated in the Grand Final. Dooleys had the upper hand going into the competition with 20 years of experience playing shuffleboard against the newly-formed Legends who

After a tense Grand Final game where four players from each team faced off against each other, Dooleys finally claimed victory with a decisive win over the Legends. The oldest player on the day was Hilda Riley from Dooleys who will be turning 97 this December and is still an active member of shuffleboard and indoor bowls.

“Unfortunately we tend to become less active the older we get which has a negative effect on our overall health and wellbeing. Shuffleboard is easy to play and is a unique sport that everyone can enjoy while still experiencing the excitement of real sport and teamwork,” said Steve. Winners from the day walked off with a trophy and bragging rights but Steve said that everyone walks away as winners in the game of shuffleboard:

There were approximately 40 players and supporters of both teams, including a bus load from Dooleys, who came to cheer on both teams and the competition was a fun and positive way to highlight the benefits of shuffleboard for seniors.

“Congratulations to Dooleys for winning the first ever shuffleboard championship but ultimately all players are winners because they receive the benefits of physical and mental exercise while playing the game.” said Steve.

“I started shuffleboard over 20 years ago and this is a great game where seniors can participate in this team sport, burn calories and exercise their mind while calculating their next puck shot,” said Steve Mortimer OAM, Bulldog Legend and Founder of Steve Mortimer’s Australian Shuffleboard.

Anyone interested in learning how to play shuffleboard can join the Lakemba Legends; every Tuesday 1-3pm.

FAMILY DREAM TEAM – BROTHERS ALEX AND THEODORE TOGETHER WITH THEIR DAD ANASTASIOS ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT SERVING AUTHENTIC GREEK FOOD TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU TO THE ISLANDS

MEET THE ISLANDS FAMILY The Islands welcomes you to its table, to join in the warmth and generosity of traditional and modern authentic Greek cooking. Located inside The Lakemba Club, it is a family-run restaurant that welcomes you with a smile, creating an atmosphere that is relaxed, warm and social. Manager Theodore Loudaros and his family team, consisting of his father Anastasios and brother Alex, have crafted a stellar menu that includes a range of their favourite classic homemade Greek dishes which are meant to be mixed, matched and shared across the table just like you would do with your own family at home. Hailing from the beautiful island of Syros in Greece, Anastasios opened the doors

to their first family restaurant thirty years ago right on the harbour of one of the busiest ports in all of Greece – Ermoupolis. Popular with tourists and locals alike, he created a legacy that he later passed down to his children which still lives on today. The Islands, built on the knowledge and skills inherited from Anastasios, uses the freshest produce sourced locally and prepared daily on the premises. Theodore and his team have chosen recipes which have been handed down from generation to generation so that you’ll always feel like you are eating at ‘yia yia’s’ (grandmother’s) house. All of the dishes are handmade with love and care so that you will feel like one of The Islands’ extended family.

LOCATED AT THE LAKEMBA CLUB 26 Quigg St, Lakemba Call 9751 5888 to make a booking To view the full menu, visit lakembaclub.com.au

Theodore’s highlight memory was when his family restaurant was given the opportunity to be on Greece’s famous show ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ hosted by well-known Greek Chef, Ektoras Botrini, who personally taught Theodore his secret to the perfect pizza dough. Theodore has mastered the perfect pizza that will have you licking your fingers. The Islands represents a new vision for The Lakemba Club, honouring the beautiful Greek Islands and all the flavours that come with them.
