CEO’S REPORT

DECEMBER 2013

DEAR MEMBERS Christmas is a truly magical time of the year at Canterbury and in 2013 we will again be showcasing another dazzling light display including our 11 metre Christmas Tree and 7 metre tall Reindeer. Plus, from 2 December Santa will be visiting every night, so why not drop down to Canterbury with the kids or grandkids and snap some priceless memories.

Sydney’s finest Chinese Restaurants.

As I write this our two million dollar renovation of Lakemba Services Club is progressing well. In October the first stage was completed with a new bar, café and TAB opened and new carpeting and a general refurbishment of the gaming floor. Externally the façade of the club has been rendered and new landscaping is underway.

In the last Journal the new Flame Pizza + Grill was launched. This new restaurant has proven a hit with members, with great feedback received on not just the quality of the food, but the generous portions. If you have not had a chance to check it out for yourself, why not make some time over summer to drop in a meal. With the terrific views over the tranquil gardens of the League Club it’s a fabulous spot to enjoy a long lunch or festive evening meal.

With this first internal stage completed at Lakemba the builders are now hard at work completing the remainder of the club. This exciting stage will see the construction of a new eatery, Imperial Noodles & Dumplings. This new restaurant will be run by the same team that operate the Dynasty Restaurant in Canterbury, widely recognised as one of

Along with the fresh new look of the club, we have also taken the opportunity to refresh the branding. Signage for ‘The Lakemba Club’ will be going up soon and will give the club its own identity and personality. I would encourage everyone to take some time to check out The Lakemba Club.

After months of planning and development by your Board and Management, the Masterplan for the redevelopment of Canterbury is being lodged with Council. This exciting Masterplan represents the single

biggest investment in your Club and will ensure that Canterbury continues to remain at the forefront of the NSW Registered Clubs industry for many years. We will be sharing details of the Masterplan with Members over the coming months and I encourage you to visit our website often and register your email address so that we can keep you up to date with developments. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of Canterbury, I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Steve Turner talking at a Papua New Guinea school

Bulldogs return to Papua New Guinea Local school children in Papua New Guinea were recently treated to a visit from the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs as part of their ‘Bulldogs in the Community’ program.

After a rewarding trip last year, Canterbury was proud to partner with the Bulldogs again by donating $15,000 and sending three Canterbury staff – Paul Ware, Edwina Roberts and Christine Prodromou. This donation went towards funding the trip with the goal of promoting rugby league and

providing support by helping build a new school classroom in Papua New Guinea. “It is great to support the Bulldogs in the Community program and to help underprivileged kids and the Kavieng community. It is also an opportunity for the

Canterbury staff Edwina Roberts and Christine Prodromou with Tim Browne

Bulldogs representatives included recently retired winger Steve Turner, and NRL players Mitch Brown and Tim Browne. A number of up and coming stars like Lachlan Burr, Harlan Alaalotoa and Adam Elliott as well as a number of Canterbury and Bulldogs administrative staff also flew over for the week-long trip.

DECEMBER 2013 players and staff to experience life in another country and build their leadership qualities,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club. Bulldogs players and staff visited 14 schools in total. School visits included rugby league clinics for many children in the area who are passionate league supporters, as well as players speaking about the importance of getting a good education and following their dreams. Canterbury staff also got right into the spirit of the community by helping with the construction of a new classroom at Nehemiah Christian School. “Helping build a school was one of the most rewarding experiences of the trip for me because you can see your efforts are directly impacting these kids. They don’t have much but they are constantly smiling and happy to see you,” said Paul Ware who works in Maintenance at the Club.

Recognising this need in their community, Good Beginnings Australia took the initiative to start up the Lakemba Community Toy Library in 2011. Located in a shipping container on site at Hampden Park Public School, the toy library is open every Wednesday from 9am to 1pm and every fourth Saturday during school terms. “In this [Canterbury] area, where rental prices are going up faster than incomes, and where people have limited space and money for toys, it is essential that a service like ours is here for families with young children,” said Jeff Wilkin, Coordinator of Good Beginnings Australia.

“With thanks to the funding from Canterbury League Club, we have been able to greatly improve our stock of toys and build some suitable display and storage shelves. Most importantly, it allowed us to employ an experienced Toy Librarian who runs the service and assists families in making informed toy choices appropriate for their child’s development needs,” said Wilkin.

Congratulations to the following lucky Canterbury Members

For a small joining fee, parents can borrow toys such as educational board games, rideon vehicles, musical toys, construction toys, puzzles, baby toys and so on. “We have toys for children aged 0-5 years old and they are perfect for occupying their time while having fun, and learning and developing new skills. Families with many young children or children with a disability or development challenges are particularly pleased as it allows them to significantly reduce parenting costs,” said Wilkin.

Toy Library a Big Hit with the Kids Toys are of great benefit to the development and socialisation of any growing child but every parent knows how expensive it can be to provide new toys for their children. For many parents living in the Canterbury area, it is a financial burden to be constantly replacing toys as their children quickly outgrow or tire of them.

Canterbury Chairman Dr. George Peponis OAM visited the toy library.

As with local public libraries, the Lakemba Community Toy Library is reliant on volunteers and community funding to maintain costs and purchase new toys. This year Canterbury League Club has donated $15,000.

CANTERBURY Keeping Men Busy in the Shed Elderly socially isolated men are four times more likely to commit suicide than their female counterparts. It is a chilling statistic but no less true according to study compiled by the Central Sydney Area Health Service. Canterbury City Community Centre is working to turn around that figure with their Men’s Shed program which has been running since 2007. An ongoing community project, the Canterbury Men’s Shed is a place where men aged 55 years and over can gather together for woodworking and craft activities while at the same time creating opportunities for conversation in a safe and supportive environment.

Alan Davis showing Dr. George Peponis OAM the facilities in the workshop

Located in its own fully equipped workshop in Clissold Parade Campsie, the number of members has grown strongly since their initial start operating out of Canterbury Boys High School’s wood work room. However increased costs of operations and cutbacks in funding have made it difficult to expand Shed membership and activities. The Shed runs on funding from the Canterbury City Community Centre, sales

of their wood and toy projects and local business donations such as the $12,000 recently contributed by Canterbury League Club. “Men should have a space where they feel comfortable to speak about their issues without fear or judgement or stigma because it is something many other men go through as well,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

Canterbury Director Steve Mortimer presented five year recipents with their awards

2013 Canterbury Staff Service Awards Sixty-nine long service awards were given out at the recent Canterbury League Club Staff Service Awards. These awards recognises Canterbury employees who have provided the Club with 5, 10, 15, 20, 35 or 40 years of service. Three of the longest serving Canterbury employees recognised on the night were Christine Mitchell, Eva Silvestri and Bridget

Mission to Feed the Homeless A call for help from Maronites on a Mission (MOM) saw more than $30,000 in community and business donations raised to purchase a new food van. MOM is a charitable organisation running out of St Charbel’s Church in Punchbowl and part of their mission is to help feed the poor and homeless with their weekly food van runs.

Burchell. These lovely ladies were presented with flowers, a gift and a 40 Year Award certificate. Another noteworthy mention goes to George Cocokios for providing 35 years. “We would like to thank all our employees for their continual support of the Club and their constant hard work and dedication to providing the best customer service for our guests and members,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman.

“Special mention goes out to the four fantastic employees who have tirelessly worked year after year after year – their efforts have helped shape the Club to what it is today.”

Dr. George Peponis OAM, Bridget Burchell, Christine Mitchell, Eva Silvestri and George Cocokios

“The Board received their request for assistance and within four weeks were able to hand them a cheque for their new food van. Organisations like Maronites on a Mission are literally the vehicles of change and we have always been committed to help our community with projects like this,” said George Coorey, Director at Canterbury League Club.

MOM’s outreach program sees weekly food van runs feeding the homeless in Martin Place and Woolloomooloo in the city and Prince Alfred’s Park in Parramatta. “We want to establish a good relationship with the homeless; listen to them and attend to their needs by providing them with a stable point of contact.” said Charbel Taouk, President of MOM.

However MOM’s food run was almost in jeopardy when they had to return their previously borrowed food van and were left without a way to transport their hot meals. When Canterbury League Club heard about their plight they responded by donating $30,000 to their cause. Charbel Taouk, Sharon Boulos, Fr Ronny Chaheen, George Coorey
