CEO’S REPORT This has provided us with an opportunity to tidy up the front of the Club and improve the entrance for our Members and guests. If you haven’t visited for a while, come down and check out the progress. The al fresco area of the Bakehouse is now open. This café has been well received so another 70 seats will make this area even more amazing. We are open 24 hours a day if you have not yet experienced the Bakehouse Cafe. Did you know that you can book a table in Flame Pizza + Grill directly from your computer or even your mobile phone? Simply go to our website or to dimmi.com.au and search for Flame Pizza + Grill. Flame Pizza + Grill is the perfect restaurant for couples and groups looking to enjoy a night out or celebrate a special occasion. This full a la carte restaurant enjoys views over the volcano and serves expertly presented modern meals with a Mediterranean influence. Flame Pizza + Grill is the ideal venue to experience big city restaurant quality food and service right here at Canterbury. Happy New Year and welcome to 2017 at Canterbury. In December Canterbury’s amalgamation with the Canterbury Bankstown Tennis & Bowls Club (CBTBC) was completed. Located in Punchbowl, the CBTBC is situated on around five acres on Moxham Road and consists of a Club House, two lawn bowling greens and six tennis courts. Like many small clubs, the CBTBC has suffered due to a lack of investment so we have a unique opportunity to provide another location for our Members in that area. Leveraging off our expertise and with a bit of investment, Canterbury can deliver a profitable club and a fabulous community asset. We have already commenced work with the bowling greens being treated to a full renovation and in 2017 we will be undertaking renovations to the Club House and a number of the tennis courts. Keep an eye out in coming Journals for further details. Excavations in the enormous hole at the front of the Club has finally finished. This means that the job of building up the new five storey underground car park has commenced. This is exciting for the Club because it means that the heavy machine work has ceased, so dust and noise will be greatly reduced. Generally, the work is now contained mostly within the hole.
We recently announced the closure of Belfield RSL. Canterbury amalgamated with Belfield RSL in 2012 and completed a minor renovation of the premises. While this improved trade significantly, the club continued to operate at a small loss, mainly due to its relatively poor location. Canterbury did not own the club’s premises and leased the building from the Belfield RSL Sub Branch. In late 2016 the Sub Branch advised Canterbury that they intended to sell the premises and as such the decision was made to cease trading. I trust everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. The celebrations haven’t stopped yet, however, as we celebrate both Australia Day and Chinese New Year on the same weekend later this month. Check out the great events and specials we have on offer over this jam packed weekend. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT View of the western side of the Club; contractors working to join the new section to the existing building
CONSTRUCTION MOVING INTO THE NEXT PHASE The newly-completed Bakehouse Café has been a warm, welcoming sight to Members coming through the front of the Club; so much so that it has been a favourite dining destination these past few months. With the Bakehouse outdoor pavilion opening just in time for summer, the Bakehouse Café is truly offering a totally new dining experience at Canterbury. The pavilion is clad in rich hardwood and zinc roof caps keeping in theme with the rest of the French Nouveau era of the internal section of the café but further softened by the lush greenery surrounding it. Now that the Bakehouse Café has been completed, construction efforts have amped up to deliver the new underground car park and finish the works on the western side of the Club.
4
Excavation of the underground car park has concluded and workers are now installing the column footings which will bear the load of subsequent levels as the build progresses upwards. As a strategy to future-proof the building, some columns will be oversized in order to take the weight of any potential development that may be built on top of it. On the western side, previous plant rooms have been demolished and relocated to a new section of the building. Aside from that, work is currently in the process of joining the new floor slabs together with existing floors – this will extend the side of the building to the western boundary by approximately 20 metres. This extra space will allow for an exciting new bar and lounge overlooking the atrium, extra Members’ amenities and a brand new dedicated back-of-house kitchen for an
even greater choice of snack and drinks in the upstairs lounge. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every Journal. CanterburyLeaguesClub @Canterbury_LC
DEVELOPMENT
Canterbury-Bankstown Tennis & Bowls Club has amalgamated with Canterbury League Club
CANTERBURY AMALGAMATES WITH TENNIS & BOWLS CLUB Late last year Canterbury Members were asked to vote on the amalgamation of Canterbury Bankstown Tennis & Bowls Club located in Punchbowl.
premises, conduct general maintenance and repair a damaged ceiling to secure the comfort of Members and guests within the Club.
Members voted for the amalgamation and in December 2016 Liquor and Gaming NSW approved the decision.
“The Tennis & Bowls Club approached us with the idea of amalgamating because they can see that Canterbury has a successful business model that they wish to see replicated. We are happy to share our knowledge, experience, resources and professionalism with the Tennis & Bowls Club and see that business grow too,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.
As part of the agreement, Canterbury has committed to $1 million plus funding to upgrade the tennis and bowling facilities, refurbish internal areas and beautify the external areas of the Club. Canterbury will apply for a Development Application (DA) to conduct the works including building a new outdoor lounge. The Club will continue to trade as per normal throughout the process. So far approximately $100,000 has been spent to rejuvenate the bowling greens, install security cameras around the
will review and assess the business and make changes to streamline operations. “There is a lot of potential to expand the club especially in growing its junior tennis development program which currently has a healthy membership base. Our junior tennis players, lawn bowlers, Members and guests will be able to enjoy the benefits of these improvements and it will greatly add to their overall positive experience when they visit the Club,” said Dave Brace.
One of the first steps in the new year will be to engage an architect to draw the internal and external redesign which will include new paint and carpets, updating the bar and putting in new furniture. Also, as part of the process, the Canterbury Board and senior management team

COMMUNITY
SENIORS SOCIAL NETWORKING TO REDUCE ISOLATION Residents of St Basil’s Nursing Home in Lakemba are finding it easier to reconnect with friends and family thus reducing their social isolation thanks to a $50,000 donation from Canterbury League Club which has gone towards the purchase of 60 smart tablets. The tablets have been installed with apps such as Skype and Youtube to allow residents to video call their relatives here in Australia and overseas, and access their favourite entertainment on demand like Greek movies and music amongst other things. “It has changed their lives for the better… [it has] increased their choices and enjoyment of life and opened new doors and opportunities including accessing information, books and education,” said Martha Arakas, Business Development Officer of St Basil’s Nursing Home. Age hasn’t deterred the residents from learning how to use the new tablets and St Basil’s staff were on hand to provide individual attention to demonstrate how to use them. They explain in simple terms
St Basil’s Fr Nicholas Stavropoulos and Martha Arakas presented Dr George Peponis with a Certificate of Appreciation for Canterbury’s donation
and tailor their demonstrations to the interests of each resident. “Residents are discovering a whole new world and rediscovering favourite things from their past. Their interest and smiles on their faces as well as positive feedback from their families indicates to us the success of the program,” said Martha.
“Tablets are the perfect piece of technology for seniors because it is fairly easy to use especially with joints that may be stiff from arthritis which can’t use a keyboard as easily anymore. Elderly people in nursing homes might not be able to get out as often or receive frequent visits from their families so these tablets allow them to still stay connected,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.
STEVE WAUGH FOUNDATION HELPING A LITTLE GIRL CALLED JOSIE Josie is a 4 year old little girl who loves her family and her dog Wilma. The Penshurst local loves to laugh, play, read stories, swing, swim and cuddle.
Josie is one of up to 400,000 children, and up to 2 million Australians affected by a rare disease which impacts up to 1 in 10 people in our country.
Josie also lives her life with a rare disease called FoxG1 which is a rare genetic mutation that affects her brain development and function. It means Josie is unable to walk or talk. She is tube fed, vision impaired, suffers from seizures, severe reflux, has increased susceptibility to illness, and with limited use of her hands, Josie struggles to communicate her most basic daily needs.
Her mum Sara says, “Our life over the past 4 years has been a steep learning curve involving a lot of doctors, hospital stays, therapists and new equipment, and of course lots of expenses we weren’t anticipating including a new house on a flat block of land! Thankfully we have met lots of wonderful people along the way who are only too willing to help our family.”
Canterbury has teamed up for a fourth year with the Steve Waugh Foundation who supports children and young adults affected by a rare disease by providing life changing support through a $20,000 grant to cover Josie’s physiotherapy costs for the next year, and a much needed swivel car seat.
Josie’s physical disabilities are severe and as she gets older it is becoming more difficult to get her in and out of a standard car seat. The Carrot Swivel Seat is a specialised piece of equipment which helps safely transfer her in and out of the car without her parents and grandparent carers twisting at awkward angles and hurting their own backs.
6
“Thank you to Canterbury for your generous contribution to the Steve Waugh Foundation and helping families like ours who have nowhere else to turn,” said Sara.
Josie uses a specialised walker to help her move around and increase her mobility

MEET BAKEHOUSE BARISTA TOLI His day starts an hour before the crack of dawn and yet Toli always has a welcoming smile on his face as he greets you to the Bakehouse Café for a hot cup of coffee. Say hello to Toli – coffee aficionado and Bakehouse Café’s Head Barista. Toli leads a team of Bakehouse baristas who have all been trained by him in the art of making the perfect coffee. “Lots of people know how to make coffee but there are little things which they can get wrong which affects the taste of it – for example, not tamping the grind level which extracts the coffee unevenly, not extracting the coffee quick enough or not controlling the temperature of the milk. If the barista understands what they are doing, then they are more inclined to make the coffee correctly and take more care which ultimately translates to a more positive experience for the customer.” Even though Bakehouse Café makes hundreds and hundreds of cups of coffee each day, Toli is ever vigilant to ensure every cup passes his muster. “For many people, drinking coffee is a blissful experience from the first sip and knowing we can make them that perfect cup makes our day,” said Toli. Bakehouse’s coffee beans are sourced from local Sydney roaster, Will & Co, who have partnered with worldwide green bean suppliers to offer the best raw quality product available. The green beans, 100% Arabica beans from Guatemala and Brazil, are then roasted on-site in their large Probat roasters. Specifically chosen by Toli and his team out of 13 other different coffee blends in blind taste-testings, Will & Co’s roast leaves a smooth medium-bodied flavour from start to finish. Try a coffee from Bakehouse today!

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR: SUSAN What makes you stand out from other instructors in the industry? I believe every instructor has something unique to offer but in regards to Pilates I always make sure each person in class gets a workout. In large group settings we do get beginners/ intermediate and advanced people so I’m a true believer of offering modifications or increasing challenges and teaching with appropriate cueing to ensure people understand. Nobody should feel left out and I want everyone to walk out feeling stronger, taller, leaner and reenergised.
Meet one of our Group Fitness Instructors, Susan! What’s your number one reason for getting into health & fitness? I was always an active child growing up in Wollongong – outdoors doing sports, at the beach cycling, playing volleyball or swimming. As I got older I realised health and fitness was my passion as it was already such a big part of my life.
What’s the best piece of advice you can give to someone who is new to this lifestyle? Be kind to yourself. Aim for 1-2 sessions per week then build up to 3-4 sessions per week If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your and include some healthy food choices along life, what would it be? the way. If you had your time over, is there anything you would do differently in your fitness journey? I’ve been in the fitness industry since 1989 so I’ve seen all the trends come and go but nothing works like Pilates. I wish I had discovered it earlier nevertheless I was destined to specialise in Pilates as I always loved the core and strength/stretch focus in my aerobics classes!
PILATES In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference. In 20, you will see the difference. And in 30, you’ll be on your way to having a whole new body. - Joseph Pilates
Pilates is a corrective exercise method that improves your quality of life, no matter what your age, background or fitness level. Come get healthy and strong in a fun, supportive environment.
