CEO’S REPORT
JUNE 2013
DEAR MEMBERS I am delighted to be able to write my first report to Members since joining this iconic Club in March. Canterbury is a special Club and I am honoured that your Board have chosen me to guide the business into the future. I have had the opportunity to meet with many of our staff and Members over my first few months in the job and the one thing that continually stands out is the warmth and sincerity of everyone who I have had the pleasure of speaking with. I have worked in clubs for more than twenty years and this is a truly rare quality that sets us apart from our competition. As outlined by your Chairman Dr. George Peponis at the Annual General Meeting in March, Canterbury is now debt free. This places your Club in an excellent position to be able to invest back into improving facilities for Members as well as realising opportunities as they arise. Over the past few months the Board and Management of the Club, in conjunction with professional services firm KPMG, have been working on developing a strategic plan to guide our short, medium and long-term development.
The strategic plan includes building a masterplan that will address a number of areas including improving Member facilities across food and beverage, entertainment and gaming, as well as potential diversification opportunities such as a function centre. We look forward to sharing the details of this plan with Members when it is available. The first projects likely to commence will be the construction of a new food outlet, a 24 hour cook-to-order cafĂŠ with both indoor and al fresco seating areas, and a new Bulldogs merchandise outlet. Over the past six months we have been hard at work improving our online facilities for Members to ensure that we can communicate with you as efficiently as possible. You can now follow Canterbury on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, which will give you access to all the latest information, offers and exclusive promotions. I would also encourage you to check out our website regularly and register your email to receive the monthly eNewsletter.
I would like to personally congratulate Dr. George Peponis OAM & Steve Mortimer OAM for being awarded Life Membership of Canterbury League Club at the recent AGM. Both of these men have worked tirelessly to help make Canterbury the icon it is today and this recognition is thoroughly deserved. Congratulations also to George on his appointment to head up the newly restructured seven person Board of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL). George was appointed the Independent Chairman of the NSWRL, with Bulldogs Chairman and fellow Canterbury Director Ray Dib re-elected a Director. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

COMMUNITY LIFE MEMBERSHIPS FOR BULLDOGS’ LEGENDS At the Annual General Meeting on 20 March Dr. George Peponis OAM and Steve Mortimer OAM were awarded Life Membership of Canterbury League Club for their distinguished service to the League Club. With only 16 people previously awarded Life Membership, George and Steve join an illustrious group of individuals and both share an even greater accolade of now being Life Members of both Canterbury League Club and the Bulldogs Rugby League Club. On behalf of everyone at Canterbury we congratulate George and Steve on this wonderful achievement.
TIME 4 KIDS FUNDRAISER FOR BELMORE PCYC On Thursday 11 April the foyer of Canterbury turned into a temporary jail cell. But before you think anything sinister, this penitentiary was for a good cause with local businessmen and celebrities volunteering to be locked up by the local Police to raise money for the Belmore Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC). Once inside the only way to get out of jail was to have someone post ‘bail’. Amongst the volunteers locked up by Police Officer Danny Kidd on the day was our very own CEO Dave Brace, Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg and Packed to the Rafters star George Houvardos (Carbo). The day was a huge success with $5,500 raised.

Canterbury OzTag Team
HARMONY IN CANTERBURY Rugby League celebrated Harmony Day the ‘Hazem El Masri’ way this year on Saturday 23 March at Parry Park, Punchbowl. Canterbury League Club not only provided a
$5,000 donation to assist with the running of the event but a dedicated group of staff members participated in the mixed OzTag competition. Despite coming together at late notice and never having played together until the morning of the event, the
team performed wonderfully well and only narrowly missed the finals. Along with the OzTag competition the day featured rides, food stalls, children’s activities and cultural performances. Well done Hazem on a fantastic initiative.
SUPPORTING THE LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION Canterbury recently received a visit from The Leukaemia Foundation to thank us for our donation of $7,800 towards a new Courtesy Transport Vehicle. These vehicles, driven by volunteers, are used to transport patients to and from hospital during their treatment. We also took some time out during the Bulldogs v Eels match to donate a signed Bulldogs Jersey to prolific Shave for a Cure fundraiser Catherine O’Keefe, who raised more than $25,000 for The Leukaemia Foundation through her hairdressing salon.

CANTERBURY FUTURE DIRECTION NETWORK The brainchild of former Canterbury forward Corey Payne, the Future Direction Network (FDN) was set up to provide scholarships and mentoring programs to young people in South Western Sydney. On 3 April, Canterbury hosted a presentation attended by the NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell to present the first ever recipients with their scholarships. “Education is important and we are proud to be able to support such a worthy cause” said Dr. George Peponis OAM.

SENIOR’S WEEK 2013 Senior’s Week 2013 was a success with an increase in interest from our local community. The week was jam packed with events starting with the Monday morning ‘Revive’ class. The class kicked off a great week with the gentle exercise class reaching full capacity all 3 days that week. A seminar on ‘Exercise, much more than you bargained for’ was held during the week with C-Life Instructor Mariana Tolj, who threw all the myths out the window and exposed the true benefits and importance of exercise for the older adult. “The senior’s program at C-Life is fantastic. We as a community have formed a close bond together. Each class we’re guaranteed a good workout, a great social time and a whole lot of laughing. The Club as a whole stands out from all others. From Senior’s Week, to the regular morning teas, to the ‘Revive’ class, C-Life have a great program going and I would recommend it to anyone with a Senior’s Card” Said Miriam Morris, Revive member at C-Life.
TNT IS BACK! With the success of TNT 2012, we’ve brought it back again this year to get you through that dreary winter period. With winter comes comfort food and an excessive amount of not-so-necessary couch time. It’s the time of the year where

To finish off a great week, our senior’s community gathered together for a social morning tea held at the Heritage Bar. With a great combination of carrot cake, coffee, tea and conversation it was the perfect way to end Senior’s Week at C-Life. “Senior’s Week or not, the group always put in a 100% effort in each class they do. It has been a great experience to see our Members progress and fulfil their goals over the past few years.” Said Norma Attie, C-Life Revive Instructor. On behalf of the C-Life Health Club crew, we

CANTERBURY
Season Overview The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs may have not started the season as well as they had liked but with the return of key players including James Graham & Sam Kasiano, we expect the boys to start climbing up the premiership ladder. The upcoming period of matches will prove difficult with the possibility of losing key players due to State of Origin commitments. The blue and whites will have to play before each Origin match without their star players as they are removed from Club responsibilities the week before each game. As we pass the half-way mark in the competition the Bulldogs will now put all
20
their efforts into their run towards the finals series where they’ll look to go one better than in season 2012. Captain Michael Ennis is hopeful that the side can get through the tough period as best as they can. “It is always a tough time of year (the Origin period), especially for sides like the Bulldogs who have a lot of talented players that are a chance of being selected,” Ennis said. “We saw it earlier in the year where we had a lot of guys out injured or suspended how tough it can be but I have every bit of faith in the players we have in our squad that they will be able to come in and do the required job.
Obviously our start to the season wasn’t exactly what we wanted but I can guarantee that we are working as hard as ever to get things right.” The Bulldogs have six home games remaining for the year so if you haven’t got your tickets already make sure you get in early to secure the best seats. You can get your tickets through bulldogs.com.au or ticketek.com.au

CANTERBURY attended their very first live NRL game where their entourage of Bulldogs stars Sam Kasiano, Krisnan Inu and NYC player John Sila made them the envy of fellow game attendees. Despite the disappointing result on field the kids had an awesome experience meeting the players after the game, with Frank Pritchard even donating his game boots to the family as a memento of their first game. The family’s visit featured on Channel 9’s Footy Show and can be found on the Bulldogs website.
Launched in 2009, Bulldogs in the Community is part of the Club’s formal community strategy which aims to make a positive difference in people’s lives and in our community. Bulldogs in the Community is proud to have formed partnerships with six key organisations covering a number of societal issues. The Club works closely to increase the level of awareness of each organisation and to raise much needed funds for the important causes they support.
Camp Quality has been the Bulldogs premier charity partner since 2009, along with fellow partners Beyond Blue, Greening Australia, the Salvation Army, RSPCA and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Along with the Clubs charity partners, Bulldogs in the Community raises awareness for a number of causes and supports and facilitates ‘money can’t buy’ experiences for Bulldogs members and supporters who may be experiencing hard times throughout the year.
A very special family from Griffith was speechless when they were hosted by the Club following the passing of their father. The five Koro kids were treated to two night’s accommodation at the Sydney Boulevard Hotel, watched a live screening of Nine’s Footy Show and had a VIP Taronga Zoo experience. Most importantly the family
Recent retiree Steve Turner has also joined the Community team visiting a number of schools to facilitate the NRL’s Tackle Bullying campaign, assisting with skills clinics, hospital visits and charity days. Steve has also undertaken training in new NRL community programs which will be rolled out later in the year, including a voice against domestic violence program. Since its inception Bulldogs in the Community has achieved enormous success assisting charitable causes and raising millions of dollars with players spending on average more than 1,500 hours in the community.

LAKEMBA
LAKEMBA RSL Sub Branch Celebrates 70 years April is a special month at Lakemba. This year the RSL Sub Branch celebrated 70 years. To mark the occasion the RSL of NSW presented the RSL sub branch with a commemorative plaque. The plaque was presented to Sub Branch President Ann Garland OAM for continual ANZAC services and remembering those who served and those who fell.
We Will Remember Them More than 180 people attended the Anzac Day Service on Thursday 25 April at Lakemba Services Club to remember the soldiers lost in war. The Service marked the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. To end the ceremony, Keith Lotty (for the Club), Stephanie Lander (for the RSL) and the School Captain of Holy Spirit College Andrew Fayed laid wreaths at the Cenotaph on behalf of the community.

SPORT CLUBS RESIDENT PROBUS CLUB HOSTS DISTRICT FUNCTION. On 28 March, the Probus Club of Campsie-Kingsgrove, which meets regularly at Canterbury League Club, hosted an Information Day for Probus District 9750 which was attended by approximately 100 people representing 24 Probus Clubs. Officials from Probus South Pacific Limited, the central body of Probus in Australia, were present as were representatives from Rotary. Representatives from Probus travel sponsors Trade Travel and Grand Pacific Tours also attended to give presentations on their latest travel options. Probus originally started as a community service project of Rotary and is now a world-wide movement in 23 countries. The host club of Campsie-Kingsgrove are very grateful for the support they received from the Canterbury event and catering staff. The room was set up to the last minor detail and the catering staff could not be faulted in their quiet unobtrusive service. Probus is a wonderful organisation for retired and semi retired people in that it helps to provide activities, opportunities for travel, new friendships, and fellowship for people who are often at a loss after leaving the workforce that they have participated in for so many years of their lives. The Probus Club of Campsie-Kingsgrove meets on the 3rd Wednesday each month at 10.30am. There is an interesting speaker each month and the club welcomes visitors and new members. Men, women, couples or singles are all equally welcome. For further information please contact Margaret on 9150 5211 or Joy on 9718 6470
