CEO’S REPORT
JUNE 2014
DEAR MEMBERS It is hard to believe that it has now been more than a year since I commenced at Canterbury. It has certainly been a whirlwind first year and the time has simply flown by. Along with getting to know the fantastic team, I have been fortunate to join at one of the most exciting times in the Club’s history including the development of the Club’s strategic plan and the commencement of the largest development project ever undertaken by Canterbury. At the Club’s AGM on 19 March, Members voted to support a number of resolutions to make changes to the Club’s membership structure. There is a full write-up of the changes on page 19, however I am pleased to report that we have already seen an increase in the number of new members joining since the changes were introduced. I would also like to officially welcome our former Associate Members to the Journal readership and we look forward to you enjoying the full benefits that membership at Canterbury has to offer. On April 16 the Club’s Masterplan Development Application (DA) was
considered by the Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP). Under planning regulations all projects with a value of more than $20 million are now referred to this state administered panel and I am pleased to report that our DA was approved in full. The project has now moved into its next phase which involves working with our architects on the detailed design. For a project as large and complex as ours the design phase will take several months, at which time we will be in a position to begin appointing builders with a view to commencing construction in late 2014. I look forward to providing more detail in our next Journal, however I encourage you to also follow the Club’s website and social media channels for the latest information.
General Meeting to finalise the transfer. As part of our review the decision has been made to close Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Club on June 30. Further information on the closure is included on page 39.
As part of the strategic plan we have been reviewing the Club’s full asset portfolio. As advised by our President Dr. George Peponis in the last Journal we have accepted a proposal from Wyong League Club for them to acquire the Bay Sports Club. The process to facilitate this is quite lengthy, however it continues to progress and we will keep members updated as we move towards a

The recent AGM saw the appointment of a new Board to guide your club for the next two years. Congratulations to the six returning directors and a warm welcome to new director Peter McMahon. Congratulations also to Dr. George Peponis OAM and Arthur Coorey who have been reelected to the positions of President and Vice President respectively. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

COMMUNITY University scholarships to boost South West Sydney students For some high-school leavers, going to university may be a financial challenge and a drain on an already over-stretched family budget. Data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS 2011 Survey) shows that the number of South West Sydney residents attending university is below the NSW average. A South West Sydney organisation called the Future Direction Network (FDN), established by Corey Payne, NSW Young Australian of the Year and former Bulldogs player, is hoping to inspire more high-school leavers to attend university by providing scholarships and mentoring to disadvantaged young people.
is providing two recipients with financial support to a combined value of $36,000 over three years to assist them complete their university degree. Each recipient receives $500 per month to help with their university related expenses.
“We all understand the challenges students from South West Sydney have in aspiring to attend university and more significantly, completing university degrees,” said Corey Payne, Executive Chairman of Future Direction Network.
“The money is used to help offset the costs of textbooks, travel and other expenses. We also encourage our recipients to use part of the funding to engage in university life and enjoy all that being a student has to offer,” said Corey.
“South West Sydney is the birthplace of FDN – the Board have all grown up in the region and are either first in their family or first generation to attend university. They are passionate about sharing and promoting that experience with other young people from the region.”
“We want the recipients to benefit from the rich experience that university can offer outside of the classroom as much as the experience inside of it.”

Farewelling Bridget Burchell Canterbury has farewelled long-time staff member, Bridget Burchell, with an afternoon tea hosted by her colleagues in the Terrace Bar on 8 April. Bridget, who started in 1973 and has worked at the club for the past 41 years, had been a familiar face around Canterbury’s food and beverage outlets and always had a smile for patrons.

“There are a lot of young people who live in Western Sydney who would like to attend university but for financial reasons, are unable to do so. We always want to
encourage young people to reach their fullest potential,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club. To date, FDN has committed $108,000 to the development of six future Australian leaders. The FDN scholarships are open to Year 12 students studying and living in South West Sydney who intend on going to university and can demonstrate academic potential and financial need.

Aside from being a dedicated employee, Bridget also volunteered her time on numerous occasions to arrange the annual staff picnic day. “Bridget will be greatly missed by her colleagues and patrons that she has made friends with over the years. We wish her the best for her next stage of life and would like to thank her for her wonderful years of service,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

JUNE 2014 GROW Community helping people overcome mental illness A fundraising initiative by the Rotary Club of Campsie has seen $20,000 raised on behalf of GROW Residential Community for on-going repairs and upgrades. Fundraising through weekly community markets and BBQs at Bunnings Greenacre, Campsie Rotary has managed to raise a whopping $15,000 with the help of their members and volunteers. A further $5,000 came from Canterbury League Club.
Based in West Hoxton, GROW Community is a live-in rehabilitation program for people experiencing mental illnesses or mental illness coupled with substance abuse. The retreat is set on over two hectares of bush land to accommodate 17 adults while they learn to re-integrate into the local community. The cheque presentation ceremony was held at Canterbury League Club. Campsie Rotary’s President, Frank Chahoud, and
Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club were on hand to present the cheque to Assistant Manager Louise Walker and resident, Darren, from GROW Residential Community. MP Tony Burke and City of Canterbury Mayor Brian Robson also attended the ceremony. The funds will be used to improve GROW’s multipurpose sports court which is a vital part in the overall rehabilitation program towards a healthy lifestyle and socialisation.
“Each year the Board of the Rotary Club of Campsie develops a strategic plan that supports a wide variety of local, national and international programs, and one specific focus project. The work with GROW is this year’s major focus project,” said Dr Helen Jagger, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Campsie. “Our President, Frank Chahoud, was previously a member of a community management team for the local GROW program and I’ve personally had contact with them through my work. Both of these contacts led us to have a good knowledge of the sound reputation and effectiveness of GROW as well as an understanding of the needs and limits of other sources of funding for them.”

COMMUNITY New wheelchair transforms young Bulldogs fan Jihad is 15 years old; when asked if he likes the Bulldogs he laughed and said, “Yes, I like the Bulldogs and so does the whole family. All my brothers play football. I wish I could play too.” There are lots of activities Jihad says he would love to do but is restricted by his rare neurological condition, Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T). “It makes me sad because I could do them when I was younger; I used to be able to kick a ball with my twin brother and run around with him. Now I just sit and watch my brothers playing football,” said Jihad. A-T is a rare childhood neurological progressive disease that causes degeneration in the part of the brain that controls muscles, movement and speech. His condition had deteriorated to the point where he was no longer able to walk without falling all the time. A new standing power wheelchair was the best option.
Rise for Alex McKinnon Canterbury and the Bulldogs rallied together to show their support for injured Newcastle Knight, Alex McKinnon.

Canterbury League Club teamed up with the Steve Waugh Foundation – who supports children and young adults affected by a rare disease – and provided $20,000 towards the purchase of Jihad’s new ‘transformer’ wheelchair. The new power chair, with a special standing function, has allowed Jihad to be

He can drive around while standing and reach for things up high on his own which he has never been able to do before. “I want to thank the Steve Waugh Foundation and Canterbury for their support; you have allowed me to be able to stand up tall and feel like I can achieve anything!” said Jihad.

In the week leading up to the Bulldogs’ Round 8 game against the Knights, donation boxes were put out around the club for patrons to show their support. Fans were more than happy to help out with donations when the Bulldogs sent around collection tins during the Saturday Round 8 game – raising over $3,500 and a jersey auction raised another $3,530. Another $10,000 came from major Bulldogs sponsor, Jaycar Electronics. Overall $25,000 was raised and the cheque was handed to the Knights at the post-game presentation. The funds will go towards Alex’s rehabilitation program to help him recover. Bulldogs Chairman Ray Dib and Canterbury Chairman Dr. George Peponis presenting a cheque to Newcastle

JUNE 2014 Getting locked up for a good cause The Canterbury foyer was temporarily transformed into a mini mock gaol cell in support of Belmore Police Citizens Youth Club’s (PCYC) annual fundraiser, Time 4 Kids. This is the second year Canterbury has hosted this event. Time 4 Kids is an opportunity for local members of the community, business owners and high-profile people to participate in PCYC’s fundraiser to highlight youth crime prevention and youth development. ‘Inmates’ volunteer an hour of their time to be locked-up for charity and then raise bail through community donations in order to be set free. Amongst some of the volunteers doing time, Bulldogs five-eight Josh Reynolds, Canterbury Director George Coorey, Canterbury CEO Dave Brace and Canterbury Toyota Principal Dealer Kean Booker all good-naturedly donned mock prison uniforms and did their bit to support PCYC.
Great fundraising success for ONE OF OUR OWN Canterbury staff swiftly came together in support of one of their own – Rangi Troy, in her battle against cancer. Rangi, a long-time staff member of Canterbury and a massive Bulldogs supporter, has been living with cancer for the past 19 years. Treatment options had finally narrowed down to one but it was going to be a costly procedure.
“We see Belmore PCYC as being able to play an integral role in the development of Belmore and surrounding communities. Events such as this allow members of the community to join us and with their ongoing support, the club will continue to grow and become a thriving hub for local youth to hang out,” said Nathan Lovett, Belmore PCYC Manager. Asides from providing the space, Canterbury also contributed $1,000 towards Belmore PCYC’s fundraising efforts. In total over $8,000 was raised and all donations collected go directly to the Belmore club to purchase new equipment, improve services and upgrade facilities. “It is a great initiative for kids that are not so fortunate, to have a place to get away. I grew up in Belmore and I had mates who visited the local PCYC; for some youth it’s hard growing up and your parents aren’t there to guide you. Having a place to visit like the PCYC is great for these kids and a chance to put them in the right direction,” said Josh Reynolds.

members of the management team donned floor staff uniforms and volunteered their time serving customers on the gaming floor and Galaxy Play area. The Bulldogs also provided support to one of their biggest fans by allowing Canterbury staff to pass around donation buckets during the Back to Belmore game.
Their combined efforts have successfully raised the necessary funds for her treatment which started in March. “Times like these show how amazing it can be when everyone works together to help a friend and work colleague in need. Staff alone contributed over $15,000 to Rangi’s treatment. I am extremely proud and humbled to be the CEO of such a great organisation and team,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.
When Canterbury staff heard about her situation, they quickly formed a fundraising initiative to help Rangi raise funds for her treatment. Over a few weeks, staff collected donations, held raffles, and cooked up BBQs and sausage sizzle days. Staff set themselves fundraising goals and as each goal was accomplished, different

Changes to Canterbury membership structure Several changes to Canterbury’s membership have taken effect immediately after having been passed at the Canterbury League Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 19 March. The Associate Member class has been dissolved and all existing Associate Members have been transferred to Full Membership. This means that if you were previously an Associate Member then you can now enjoy all the benefits of Full Membership. To take advantage of these benefits you will need to obtain a new membership card when you next visit one of our clubs. You may choose to retain your existing card if you wish and it will remain valid, however you will not be able to use it to gain discounts at eligible outlets. Members will be pleased to learn the new cost of annual membership at Canterbury has been reduced to $5 for one year or $20 for five years for regular members and $3.50 for one year or $14 for five years for pensioner members. Along with the new membership prices, members have voted to change from the existing fixed annual renewal date in favour of renewing each member’s membership on the anniversary date of their joining. This will ensure that all new members will receive a full year’s membership upon joining as well as spreading the administrative burden of renewals over the full twelve months. These changes will bring Canterbury’s membership more in line with other contemporary clubs and assist the club in growing its membership numbers.

C-Life staff on the way to Metabolic Jumpstart qualification Knowing how to eat well according to each individual’s metabolism is the keystone of Matt O’Neill’s popular nutrition program. Metabolic Jumpstart (MJ), brainchild of the regular Channel 7 Sunrise and Morning Show nutrition expert, was recently introduced at C-Life. It aims to help reprogram your metabolism for automatic results by working to rebalance hormones. In addition to a diet plan, participants learn about their metabolic rate, calorie burning times for different exercises and whether they are suited to a higher protein or carbohydrate diet. There are four different program types – Jumpstart, Accelerator, Maintainer and Gainer – depending on whether participants want to lose, gain or

THE LAKEMBA CLUB
Anzac Day Dawn Service A crowd of 150 people gathered at The Lakemba Club in the early morning to pay their respects to those who have fought and served for Australia. The service was moved indoors to the club’s auditorium due to poor weather conditions. This year’s Anzac Day Dawn Service marks the 99th anniversary of the Gallipoli Landing on 25 April 1915. The commemoration service was led by Father Gary Rawson of the St Therese Church of Lakemba. Greenacre Public School student, Demi Love Kassem, honoured the occasion with a poem recital. Members of the Lakemba RSL also laid three wreaths on behalf of the community followed by a minute’s silence

to conclude the service “It is important to keep on recognising the soldiers who have dedicated their lives to protecting Australia and her people. Their efforts have helped shape our identity today and this meaningful day allows us to pay our respects,” said Lynne Cox, General Manager of The Lakemba Club.

CLOSURE EARLWOOD EX-SERVICEMEN’S CLUB Dear Members, Earlwood amalgamated with Canterbury at the end of 2010. Despite investing more than a million dollars and working hard to market the venue through promotions and advertising, the Club continues to trade at a significant loss. The Earlwood Club was included in the club’s strategic plan including operation reviews, potential capital expenditure and workshops to determine if we were realising the site’s full potential. The club was at a planning crossroad where significant capital expenditure was required to bring the club up to a competitive standard. In particular the Car Park was well below standard with limited and tight space. The unexpected departure of Earlwood’s well respected caterer Papa’s Bistro, due to marginal profitability, forces the timeline on the planning crossroad. Papa’s Bistro provided a great product and was well supported by the club including paying for many promotions that drive food sales. The future viability of the club is contingent on the provision of great catering. The decision to close a club is not an easy one; however it is the role of directors to make decisions in the best interest of the business. It has been determined that the prospects of Earlwood ever being profitable were unlikely due to a number of factors including: • its location in a residential area with little passing vehicle or foot traffic • the limited availability of onsite parking • competition from larger better placed clubs in Earlwood On Sunday 30 June Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Club will cease trading. At this stage it is anticipated that Earlwood will trade as close to normal as possible until the closure date, however some promotions may cease earlier. We will advise members of any changes via the Club’s website www.canterbury.com.au/earlwood We will be in contact with the various Earlwood user groups over the next month to discuss transition arrangements to our other premises. A General Meeting of members will be called in the future to determine the disposal of the assets of Earlwood. Yours sincerely,
Dr. George Peponis OAM Chairman Canterbury League Club
