PRESIDENT’S REPORT
MARCH 2014
THE YEAR IN REVIEW I am extremely pleased to report yet another excellent result for your club over the past twelve months. The trading profit for the year ended 31 October 2013 was $13.2 Million. While this result was down on 2012, our Final Profit for the year after the payment of grants and tax was a record $7.7 million.
anticipate the first projects commencing later this year. Once works are completed, members and guests will be able to enjoy dining in a new speciality café, relax in a new sumptuous lounge area and have easier parking conditions among many other improvements.
As advised in my annual report to members last year, the club is now debt free. For much of 2013 the Board and Management have been preparing plans to ensure that Canterbury continues to grow and prosper well into the future. Early in the year a detailed Strategic Plan was developed and in November a Master Plan Development Application was submitted to Canterbury Council.
As part of our Strategic Plan we have been reviewing all of our models including our membership structure. It is apparent that despite having almost 50,000 members at year’s end, we have the potential for significant growth when compared with other similar sized clubs. After a considered review your Board is proposing a number of changes to the membership structure at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on 19 March. Among the changes we are looking to remove the Associate Membership class and have just a single membership type with a lower annual fee. We are also proposing to move from a fixed annual renewal date to renewing each member’s membership on the date of their joining. This will ensure that all new members will receive a full year’s membership upon joining. These changes, if
This significant plan includes all proposed works to the club in the foreseeable future and will assist us in ensuring that projects can be rolled out in a timely and cost effective manner with the capacity to add on major projects in the future such as a Motel without the need to redevelop back of house areas. With no major issues we
passed, will bring our Club more in line with other major clubs and assist us to reach our membership growth targets. Our most significant building project in 2013 has been the renovation of the Lakemba Services Memorial Club. Re-branded as The Lakemba Club, members and guests visiting the Club can expect exciting new changes; it has been refreshed and modernised and the new Imperial Noodle and Dumpling Bar, sister to The Dynasty, is already building a name for itself with its tasty treats and delightful offerings. Canterbury has always been a proud supporter of the local community and this year was no different. In 2013 we donated $1.35 million to 120 different community and sporting groups (excluding the Bulldogs). Some of the projects we supported in 2013 have included the Starlight Children’s Foundation, funding a food van for the Maronites on a Mission, purchasing a new medical microscope for Canterbury Hospital and a brand new weightlifting room at the local Belmore PCYC.

For Bulldogs members and fans, 2013 provided an equal dose of highlights and challenges. With the team unable to field a consistent squad early in the year they never quite got into the rhythm that saw them reach the Grand Final the year before. Despite rallying through the middle of the year to make the finals, they ultimately bowed out in the elimination final to the Newcastle Knights. We wish the Bulldogs the very best for their 2014 campaign with hopes for a more fortuitous year. During the year the Flame Restaurant was relaunched as Flame Pizza + Grill. With a menu focussing on quality Pizza and Steakhouse offerings, members have been impressed with, not only the quality

of food and service, but also the generous portions. If you have not had a chance to check out Flame Pizza + Grill then I encourage you to make a booking today. C-Life Health Club has had another fantastic year – membership is at record levels. In 2013 C-Life launched a new website, a Facebook page and a new members’ newsletter. More classes were added to the timetable and a host of new equipment was purchased and existing equipment replaced. The gym is always growing and is having a positive impact on the health of our members. Despite being a relative latecomer to social media, Canterbury has quickly established itself as an industry leader in this growing
area. The Canterbury Facebook page is now one of the largest of any clubs with almost 7,500 followers. Members have access to the latest information on club activities, food and beverage specials, promotions and shows at their fingertips. I encourage you to follow the club if you are on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and register your email address to receive our electronic newsletter. Aside from social media, we have also improved the Canterbury website to be more intuitive and user-friendly. Members can keep up-to-date with weekly entertainment, purchase show tickets, renew their membership, browse restaurant menus, read about the Club’s community news, and find important

contact details. We have also recently launched a website for The Bay Sports Club which is informative and easy to navigate. With changes to the amalgamation laws in recent years allowing for clubs to de amalgamate, the Board has been in a better position to evaluate our portfolio of clubs. Through this evaluation it was apparent that due to the significant distance between Canterbury and Bay Sports as well as the different customer profiles, that achieving synergies between the two venues has been difficult. We had also received interest from a number of clubs based on the Central Coast in taking over the running of the Bay Sports Club. To ensure that the best interests
of Canterbury and Bay Sports members were realised, expressions of interest were called for from clubs interested in acquiring Bay Sports Club. A number of very strong proposals were received and following a detailed review, in February we advised Wyong Rugby League Club that we would like to proceed with their proposal. There is still a significant amount of work to do, including consultation with members, before a final proposal can be put to members. However, we are very pleased that the proposal from Wyong Leagues will provide both certainty and stability for Bay Sports Members and staff (including the bowling club) along with a positive financial outcome for Canterbury.
fellow Directors, Management and Staff for your continued efforts that make Canterbury the wonderful club that it is. To our members, on behalf of the entire Board I offer my thanks and gratitude for their continued patronage and support.

and proceeds of the night went towards supporting Starlight’s in-hospital Starlight Express Room programs.
For seriously-ill children life can seem like one giant merry-go-round of hospital and doctor visits, medicines and painful operations.
Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club, was there on the night to present a cheque for $20,000 to Starlight.
It can be a never-ending cycle for some but this is where organisations like the Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia come in. Formed in 1988, the organisation helps brighten the lives of chronically-ill children and relieve the anxiety of being sick with their in-hospital programs including the Starlight Express Rooms with Captain Starlight and their out-of-hospital Wishgranting program. “Starlight aims to transform these children’s experiences by replacing pain, fear and boredom with fun, joy and laughter. While health professionals focus on treating the illness, we can offer sick kids support and help them be a child again,” said Louise Baxter, CEO of Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia.

In 2013, Starlight granted 462 wishes across Australia and their goal in 2014 is to grant 500 more to seriously-ill and hospitalised children. One wish may take up to 18 months to grant depending on the situation and the medical complexity of the case. “It is hard for seriously-ill children to have a normal childhood as they may spend a lot of time in hospital. Organisations like Starlight are so valuable because they create lifechanging memories for these sick kids,” said Dr George Peponis.
MARCH 2014 New weightlifting club to come to Belmore PCYC While all eyes were on our Australian athletes at the Sochi Winter Games, a group of young people were commencing their own potential Olympic journey at the new Belmore PCYC Weightlifting Club. Belmore PCYC recently completed renovations to transform one of their rooms into a weightlifting area any Olympic athlete would be proud to train in. It boasts brand new weightlifting equipment including Olympic bars, plates, chin up bars, multiple platforms, and rubber safety flooring. “PCYC has been involved in many different sports and has had numerous success stories. The Belmore club has its own history and success with weightlifting in the past – George Vasil, who competed at the 1972 Munich Olympics, trained here at Belmore PCYC,” said Nathan Lovett, Belmore PCYC Manager. The weightlifting room and facilities will be available for Belmore PCYC members to train five days a week, Monday to Friday from 12pm - 8pm. They will also be running regular specialised training sessions with qualified trainers throughout the week for participants who want to improve their form and technique. “The main goal for the Weightlifting Club is to train members who are interested in learning about correct lifting technique and
Feeding the frail, elderly and the house-bound Home-delivered meals are a tasty blessing in disguise for many residents of the Canterbury Local Government Area who are unable to shop, cook or leave their homes. Canterbury Meals on Wheels, a not-for-profit organisation based in Campsie, delivers 100 to 200 meals a day to their registered clients. Volunteer drivers distribute meals five days a week to 18 different suburbs including Belmore, Punchbowl, Earlwood and Hurlstone Park.

The new Belmore PCYC Weightlifting Club was made possible by a $20,000 grant from Canterbury League Club.
The first PCYC was established in 1937 by Police Commissioner William John Mackay as an outlet for youths to get active and involved in the community, develop leadership skills while also reducing and preventing crime against young people. Belmore PCYC offers various types of youth activities from boxing, break-dancing, basketball, guitar and drum lessons.
“We believe strongly in encouraging young people to participate in sport and the community since that encourages a healthier lifestyle and helps build character skills that young people will need later in life,” said

CANTERBURY Employment reconnecting people with disabilities to THE community A disability should not be a barrier to gainful employment and if anything, a meaningful occupation will help empower people with disabilities. For this very reason, Centacare Industries, which is based in Belmore, provides supported employment and training opportunities to adults with various disabilities including dyslexia, Down syndrome, autism and mental illness. “Employment provides our employees with the opportunity to participate and integrate with their local community. We recognise that skills and self-esteem develop when individuals are given the chance and training
to do work that is valued,” said John Esther, Operations Manager at Centacare Industries. Centacare currently employ 65 supported employees who work in various roles including packaging, assembly, security shredding and garden maintenance. They have clients all over Sydney and provide services to over ten different customers every day. All of their supported employees are supervised by coordinators and Training and Development Officers. “Our main purpose is to enable all employees to fulfil their potential and the diversity of our employees means that there is always someone who has the capability to excel in some area,” said John. “We tailor job roles to suit individual abilities, skill levels and interests. If we have
employees who have particular talents, we work with them to identify and build their abilities.” Supporters of local disability organisations, Canterbury League Club donated $20,000 to Centacare Industries which was used to purchase new equipment to streamline efficiencies and help staff complete tasks safely. Some of the new purchases included an automatic pallet wrapper, gardening tools, trolleys and ergonomic furniture. “For people with disabilities, gainful employment can make the difference to finding independence for themselves. It is also a chance to interact with other people which can only have a positive effect on their lives,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of the Canterbury League Club.

Continuing Pilates education for C-Life instructors C-Life members will find an exciting newlyupdated Pilates program when they come to their next class. Gym instructors Mariana Tolj and Mick Murphy recently completed an intensive Rebecca Leone Pilates Excel two-week course as part of a continuing education initiative to keep on developing the skills of C-Life instructors and personal trainers. “Our members can now enjoy the same great exercises from the Pilates Method with the added benefits of being taught correct technique for a strong and supple back without the risk of injury.” said Arthur

The main difference between Pilates and Yoga is the former emphasises the importance of building core strength and stability, recovering from past injuries and

THE BAY SPORTS CLUB Bulldogs a big hit in The Bay Over 500 Bulldogs fans excitedly gathered at The Bay Sports Club to welcome their heroes at the annual Bulldogs Family Day on January 10. The event kicked off at 1pm with the Bulldogs split into two groups – one group participated in a social game of bowls while the other half mingled with fans taking photos and providing autographs – before swapping over. Players from the Bateau Bay Men’s Bowling Club were at hand on the day to provide the Bulldogs players with advice and quick howto tips before teaming up to play a game of bowls.
2014 Team at Bay Sports
Josh Reynolds and Trent Hodkinson were among the players who mingled with fans wanting to meet and pose with their favourite stars. Captain Michael Ennis, Josh Jackson and Tim Browne were also big hits. “It's always nice to have a game of bowls and see so many people who love the club, come out and show their support,” said Trent Hodkinson.
Bulldogs supporters also had the opportunity to meet new 2014 recruits Chase Stanley, Tyrone Phillips and Pat O’Hanlon, and wish them the best of luck for the 2014 season. “It was a great day for the kids and their families to meet their favourite players and get a few pictures. Thankfully the weather was more cooperative as compared to last year’s 47 degree scorcher!” said Lisa Caswell, The Bay Sports Club Manager.
