CEO’S REPORT Sports Bar, with Bulldogs matches also being broadcast on the new large screens in the Bakehouse Lounge. So, if you can’t get to the match live then come in and enjoy dinner and the game at Canterbury. In February the final piece of the Bakehouse Outdoor lounge was completed with a translucent glass roof now covering most of the outdoor seating area. This means that you can enjoy a comfortable al fresco meal all year round. To complement the regular Bakehouse menu you can also choose from a range of new daily specials and for March and April we have some exciting new options available for breakfast and all day meals. See page 6 for further information. The plans for the refurbishment of the existing Banyan Brasserie are well advanced and construction will start in this space over the next few months. The existing Banyan restaurant has served the Club well and literally millions of people have enjoyed a meal in this restaurant over the past 14 years. We will be providing details of the new restaurant in coming Journals, however it will be almost double the size of the Banyan Brasserie with a huge al fresco area overlooking the gardens at the front of the Club. In the meantime, under the guidance of Executive Chef Stephanie Azar, the Banyan continues to thrill Members and Guests with a brand new menu introduced in February. Make sure you take the time over the next couple of months to come down to Canterbury and farewell the Banyan in style. Your tastebuds will thank you for it. Happy Easter to all of our Members and guests. As flagged in the last Journal, with the carpark excavation complete there is no longer any noise and dust coming from the site. With a large amount of supporting structure removed we are taking the opportunity to improve the entrance and driveway. The result is an even more comfortable and streamlined entry to the Club. The NRL Season kicks off Thursday 2nd March, with the Bulldogs playing their first game on the following night against the Melbourne Storm. In 2017 Monday Night Football has been replaced by Thursday Night Football and the Bulldogs have already been scheduled for a number of Thursday Night matches. You can catch all NRL matches live in the Bulldogs
In 2017 Canterbury is once again working with the ANZAC Day Dawn Service Trust to produce the official ANZAC Day Dawn Service Program. 2017 is the fourth year in a five year centenary commemoration of the Landing at Gallipoli and World War 1 and we are immensely proud to help acknowledge this significant part of Australia’s history. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT Bird’s eye view as building progresses upwards from the basement level
NEW CAR PARK RISING FROM THE GROUND The start of the new year saw a renewed effort to continue the construction of the multi-storey underground car park at the front of Canterbury. The basement level of the car park has been completed and workers are progressing upwards, one concrete level after another. During the mammoth effort of building this new car park, architects have used new technology to install the large column footings via specially-made concrete column forming tubes which hold in the concrete as it sets. This new system offers advantages over traditional methods and reduces build time because it is easier and quicker to pour and set concrete. The larger column footings are necessary to future-proof the area for potential redevelopment above the site. Above Bakehouse Café, advanced work is continuing to complete the shell of the future cocktail bar. Large glass panes have been fitted around the shell to weather-proof the area and separate the indoor section from the balcony which will eventually turn into a luxurious outdoor terrace. The external area has been further softened with planter boxes full of plants that wrap around the
4
terrace, tying its landscape design to Bakehouse Café’s greenery underneath it. Builders are working in tandem to complete the offices above the cocktail bar as well. Once the third level has been completed, the team will move into their new offices; their old space will be demolished to make way for the new showroom and function rooms in the next phase of development. The new showroom will have capacity to seat 450 guests buffet style or 700 guests cocktail style and will be able to host larger entertainment acts. On the western side of the Club, work is still continuing to join the new extension to the current edge of the building which
has seen a lot of progress since the last Journal. The majority of the roof structure has already been installed, new exhaust ducts have been turned on, and the remaining gantry support steelwork as patrons drive into the car park has been removed. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every Journal. CanterburyLeaguesClub @Canterbury_LC
In the last Journal, the Development photo showed that the rooftop hadn’t been joined yet. Forward a few months and the roof structure is now one piece and almost complete
COMMUNITY
CANTERBURY STAFF PROGRAM Every year Canterbury staff members get involved in the community and generously volunteer their time, sometimes putting their bodies on the line, to raise funds for worthwhile causes. In 2016, staff raised more than $5,000 for a variety of charities including Cancer Council Australia, National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Leukaemia Foundation and Children’s Medical Research Institute through a number of fun initiatives like Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, the World’s Greatest Shave and Jeans for Genes Day. Looking ahead into 2017, staff are going to try to surpass that mark with a host of fundraising and volunteering events planned throughout the year including feeding the homeless with local Punchbowl group, Maronites on Mission, spending time with animals at RSPCA
Yagoona, and getting fit and healthy with the 10,000 step Global Corporate Challenge. In addition, every year Canterbury League Club donates approximately $1.2 million to over 120 local community groups, charities, schools and sporting clubs. Canterbury is also a massive supporter of rugby league, junior rugby league and grassroots sports – Canterbury Bankstown District Rugby League Referees Association, Greek Rugby League, Canterbury Bankstown Junior Rugby League Football Club, Kingsgrove Cricket Club and Sydney Cedars Sports Club are amongst some of the recipients that have benefitted from Canterbury’s ClubGrants funding. “Canterbury encourages a work culture that is not only fun and supportive, where everyone comes together as a team, but
also where giving back to the community is highly valued for the social benefits as well as increasing job satisfaction. We want our employees to have the opportunity to be a part of something larger and be able to make meaningful connections with the community,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.
Canterbury staff members donned pink to raise awareness during October Breast Cancer Awareness month on behalf of National Breast Cancer Foundation
YOGA TO REDUCE STRESS AMONGST SCHOOL CHILDREN Students from Wiley Park Public School have been practicing health and mental wellness thanks to a $5,200 donation from Canterbury League Club which went towards employing a yoga instructor, Despina Rosales, who taught classes at the school. The idea for yoga came from the school’s Learning Support Team who were looking at ways to support student wellbeing with a priority on supporting children who were newly arrived, children with issues of anxiety and behaviour, and children who needed more opportunities to socialise amongst each other. “As staff, we have participated in yoga sessions in the past and believe that it helped improve our working environment through peer participation and developing friendships. Yoga often teaches strategies of calmness and relaxation which we thought would be beneficial to some of our students in terms of improving behaviour and anger management,” said Susie Hadid, Deputy Principal at Wiley Park PS.
The yoga program runs once a week at lunchtime across all four school terms with kindergarten to Year 6 students receiving the opportunity to participate in the classes. “With two regular teachers supporting the yoga teacher, it is evident that children, particularly in the second group of regular students, have improved in various ways including listening skills, following instructions, participation in group settings, relaxation techniques, supporting peers and encouraging one another,” said Tamara Cook, classroom teacher at Wiley Park PS.
Wiley Park PS’s teachers have also commented on how participants have shown an improvement in their classroom behaviour and the way in which they deal with problems and issues in the classroom and playground. “Children nowadays are being bombarded with so many different messages which can cause a lot of internal stresses – a yoga program like this is an active solution to help calm and centre their minds while also encouraging physical exercise from a young age,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

MEET ONE OF OUR TRAINERS: JOHN CHIDIAC start going to the gym with them. I was really motivated to transform my body and I haven’t looked back since – I have enjoyed every minute spent at the gym. What makes you stand out from other Personal Trainers in the Industry? I believe I am honest and realistic as I have been through this journey myself over the past 10 years and know what is required to achieve the results. I have done the hard yards so I can really relate to people who are beginning their own fitness journey and are keen on transforming their bodies and achieving their goals.
John is a welcome addition to the C-Life team and he is now available for Personal Training sessions. Feel free to stop by and say hello when you see John working on the gym floor. What’s your number one reason for getting into fitness and health? About 10 years ago I had a few friends in the fitness industry who kept encouraging me to
What is your favourite machine in the Health Club? The 360-degree Smith Machine because it works out a variety of body parts and encourages great technique. It can basically be used as a “one stop shop” and I believe it can also be safer to use. Whether you want to bench press, deadlift, pull ups, bicep curls or shoulder press, this machine can do it all. What do you love most about working at C-Life? Apart from being close to home, C-Life is a cutting edge facility with some fantastic

staff and members. It has its own sense of community and this creates a real feeling of belonging. What is your favourite group exercise class and why? Blitz is my favourite because of its great intensity and it can be catered for people with different fitness levels. It also includes a variety of different exercises, targeting both your strength and fitness. It is a great way to burn those extra calories while keeping the enjoyment in it. Finally, you can’t go wrong with doing a class with one of our favourite instructors, Ray Moujalli. Resistance or cardio, which do you prefer? Both definitely have their place but personally I would have to go with resistance training as I believe if done correctly, it can be utilised as a form of cardio. High intensity resistance training is also a great way to improve general fitness and I find this more enjoyable than just running on a treadmill every day. Also who doesn’t like that pump you get from resistance training! Favourite Quote “Life’s too short to be small”.
MAXXFIT is a unique and addictive full body workout based on a non-contact combative concept. A combination of mixed martial arts moves and fitness drills using mitts and kick shields, get ready for muscle burn and an elevated heart rate to build functional strength, speed and endurance.
